I remember this game with great affection, and often play the game myself.

I was on this show in 1978! Me and my ex won £250, quite a lot of money in those days.

Very busy man was Fred. At the time of this epidode of Gambit on 15th September 1981, on a typical busy week he read the local news or sport on one of the locsl ITV 6pm Regional News magazines, presented HOW, covered for Dickie Davies on World of Sport and later the same day in the evening hosted Gambit accompanied by the cinema organ played by Peter Fenn and the voiceover John Benson.

Fred’s still around, aged 79 at time of writing. Thanks for the upload, brings back memories.

Fred has left ITV Meridian, he hosted his final news programme last Thursday but he is continuing to host the crime programmes for Sky Crime.

Would love it if ITV released clean versions of the Gambit, Sale Of The Century and the About Anglia theme tunes, all written by Peter Fenn, as MP3s 👍

Thanks for putting this video up, it brought back some great memories. At breaktimes at school, we used to take out a deck of cards and stage our own game of Gambit (minus the prizes, of course). Do you have any more of these?

The lady sings quite pleasantly and Fred says "fine, don't call us". And that HAS to be where Steve Coogan modelled his narcissistic and rude Alan Partridge character.

@@ysthafellgynghori8423 the smaller Regional stations like Anglia, Tyne Tees & HTV were limited by the ITA as to how much they could spend on prizes.

Gambit , tended to be partly networked; being shown in some regions at different days and times , I think most regions would see all editions eventually. Grampian had this on Monday teatimes 5.15. and another Anglia programme , Survival would be shown when Gambit ended a series run . Around 1984 Tom 'O Connor took over from Fred and the show moved to Thursday evenings at 7.30.

    • @securityrobot

I like this because it’s so crap and shoddy, the host is low cost, the set is tacky. It’s very similar to Mr and Mrs with Derek Batey with the lucky contestants winning a cash prize of £45, and features the audience that always looks the same on both shows.

  • @antster1983

Only one reason to watch the show - Fred Dinenage. The inspiration for Anne Robinson's persona as host of The Weakest Link.

UK game shows had ridiculously low prize budgets compared to America, Canada or even Australia. It wasn’t until the mid 1990’s when television networks allowed them to increase the advertised winnings. Then a little known show called Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was started and the big money quiz show and quite frankly the game show genre had been resurrected.

Gambit UK (1981)0557am 29.6.23 this obsession with the organ as instrument of choice where quiz shows are concerned re: as background muzak when detailing the prizes up for grabs... (??????????????????????) who is that on the old bon tempi, i wonder?
