The Neglected T3 Thyroid Hormone May Be the Most Important of All

  • For decade, endocrinologists have told us that it is useless to test for the T3 thyroid hormone, even refusing to test for the free T3 blood test. They also refused to address low levels of the free T3 hormone by supplementing it or converting levothyroxine (T4) alone to T3-containing preparations such as Armour Thyroid, Naturethroid or others.
Recent evidence, however, proves them completely wrong and, in fact, assessment of T3 levels may be the most important thyroid measure of all.

Thank you! I had my left thyroid taken out at 12 because my pediatrician saw a goiter. I had just had braces put on and cavities filled with mercury. I fainted during ballet class. Took thyroxin till 18 then stopped. I’m 69, still surf, eat Keto, sleep good, very active, take only some important supplements, no pharm pills. Purchasing Reuteri today! ❤

Absolutely fantastic post! Thank you. I’ve been preaching this to who ever will listen. Yes, we need to advocate for ourselves. I’m now 65 I have a list of labs I want my Dr to test, and if they don’t I find someone who will. Sad we have to pay out of pocket sometimes to get the health questions answered. It’s my life and I’m not going to sit around and wait anymore . Thank you again for all the great information you share. Now onto learning to make your yogurt 🙏🏻💕

You and Dr. Perlmutter saved my life. Thank you. In the 90s I was on my way to “arthritis” and God knows what other disability that would have me dead by now. I totally stopped eating the new low growth, high protein wheat and drove cane sugar down even further than it already was in my diet. My measure of “does it work?” was walking the stairs. In three days the pain started 3-4 steps up instead of when I raised my foot for the first step. In three weeks, no pain till 5-6 steps. And so it went. In my minds eye I still remember and feel my jubilation when after about 11 months I put my foot on the top landing and realized “Oh! I just went up the whole staircase with not even a twinge!” No pain, no “arthritis-it just happens when you’re old-can we replace a hip for you?” No surgery. In my area of the country eating gluten free is a colossal challenge because only one grocery store has a small gluten free section. And it’s expensive. But if this is the cost for being able to live to see my daughter married and to see her child born, I’ll take it. Thank you, doctor, thank you. I don’t understand all you and Dr. Perlmutter say, but _no wheat_ is a simple message I got. That proved a “miracle drug.” Thank you, thank you, thank you with all my heart.

That is like not testing for insulin. All our metabolic issues can traced to our liver, pancreas, or thyroid and what we are eating. All of these should be addressed every time we see a doctor especially if we already have symptoms.

I am 63, been on Synthroid for 35years. On 125 for 5 years. For the last 4 years my RT3 has been high, T4 very high. My Naturopath couldn't say why[said eat more salad]. Cardio and PCP said yes you are on to much. I was displaying very hyperthyroid behavior.
Since 6/2024 I watched Dr Bergs video on 🥰gallbladder and thyroid connection.
Late June I started taking, gallbladder support, liver cleanse, TUDCA, 20 to 30000 D3. MTC. I cut all forms of sugar, all wheat and grain carbs, I eat 2 meals a day. We do not eat out- no premade food- do everything you listed in the video- eat only organic; grass fed grass finished; wild caught ; ect... Worked outside on the property a LOT , I have dropped 22lbs.
    Oct. 2024 T4,Free = 1.8 [Normal range: 0.9 - 1.8 ng/dL] TSH = .190LOW [Normal range: 0.550 - 4.780 uIU/mL] Dose lowered to 112
    Dec. 5 2024 T4 = 1.7 TSH with reflex to T4 IF IND=1.33LOW dose reduced to 100
    Jan 2025 T4= 1.4 TSH with reflex to T4 IF IND= .127LOW Dose reduced to 88
I feel fine, sleeping fine, no palpitations, no hyper behavior. Next blood work March 5th or so.*** I Did read Super Gut*** 🥰

I know a few doctors that keep current and are very helpful. Unfortunately there seems to be a vast majority that has taken the. Kool-aid and are stuck in a dogma formed during their time in med school. To be fair, the body is enormously complex and it is a huge effort to become an MD. BUT that internalized knowledge is what was accepted at the time. Research moves on and updates to what was current and accepted need to be applied. Doctors need to stay updated and many don’t. Over the years I’ve tried to get my primary doctors to pay attention to my thyroid. Their “testing” is to look me up and down and say, “You’re not hypothyroid!” I don’t remember there being optical tests for thyroid levels! What I am is physically low functioning and I don’t feel up to par. Then there is health insurance‼️🥵🤬😬

Nobody knows. But the docs that are into iodine….25mg(10 drops of 2%) a day for maintenance. Which is also what the bottle suggests, they go to 50-200mg for sick. Some cultures have eaten 80mg a day with no issues

from the relation of T4 to free T3 we can derive a conversion intensity... the ACM curves separating the teriles of free T3 nd T4 are nicely inverted. If that conversion drops, it is indicator of metabolic health, particularly insulin sensitivity of the liver and inflammation of the liver, LPS load and CD38. I guess, those factors and high FT4/FT3 ratio are part of the - mitigatable - downward spiral in aging.
The study showing the ACM curves, unfortunately did not include any of these contributors.
Another study "FT3/FT4 ratio is correlated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular disease risk: NHANES 2007-2012" showed that the ratio FT4/FT3 is associated to ACM, but not FT3

Is it true that high cortisol levels can hender T4 to T3 conversion. My last CBC showed T3 at 37 and the low range started at 71. Cortisol sky high, testosterone low... All after prednisolone from Epic Pharmaceuticals. I had a procedure done in March..My CBC before the procedure where prednisolone was part of the recovery pack, was basically normal.. After prednisolone the CBC panel from a couple of months later when I was wondering what was going on... I got a more in depth CBC panel and it show d what I described above... Aggghhh
