First and foremost I am not a gymbro. The only thing that makes sense as to why these videos came onto my for you page is because these are technically classified as events that go out of hand. Let's talk about lack of crowd control and poor planning at Zoo Culture 2 and Fusion Gym opening days.

One of the most important things to remember for events: people act differently in crowds. They feed off each others’ energy and when enough people get riled up, it spreads. You should always have a crowd control plan. Just saying “people don’t know how to act” isn’t an excuse. Yes, some folks got out of hand, but as a people who wanted to protect their business and people’s safety, the owners should have had a plan. I’m sure there are tons of folks they could learn from about managing an event of this size.

I think it's also a bit darker than that. This is the type of situation that can turn fatal in the wrong circumstances (crowd crush). The people at the front of the crowd are in a potentially deadly situation that they can't escape. That's major fight or flight instincts kicking in. You can expect people to be unruly when they're both excited for an event and also in danger due to the size of the crowd and lack of crowd control.

None of them start out small and work their way up, so they don't gain the contacts and the experience to know if someone's bullshitting them about what can and can't be done. They'd never want to start small because 90% of the reason they want to put on any kind of event is to boost their own profile, not because they want people to enjoy the event.

$10mil for a gym isn’t a lot. (Currently getting my bachelors in construction management) A Starbucks from the ground up costs most times a minimum of $1mil. Also most places don’t recoup losses within a year and that’s okay. They still have assets. Land, equipment, memberships, etc. So him trying to speedrun recouping losses feels really weird. Yes the fees really high but then also don’t forget everything else he’ll need to pay for. Electricity, water, repairs, replacement equipment, and most unpredictable, labor. Feels really sus that the guy was so focused on recouping losses as soon as possible. Feels almost as is he wants to sell the gym asap and make a big payday.

There is very little that infuriates me more than people not taking crowd crushes into account in their event planning. Not knowing how many people will turn up isn't an excuse; you need failsafes upon failsafes so you're prepared to alleviate the internal pressure generated by the crowd *even in the worst case scenarios*. These are one of the most preventable forms of tragedy we see on a regular basis nowadays, and it usually happens because the event organizers have a "fuck it, we ball" mindset/personality and don't recognize their own responsibility to their event-goers.

When you spend most of your life at events and in situations where people have taken proper precautions, you aren't necessarily going to realize why things are done a certain way and assume you can just throw a huge event without proper planning.
This applies to lots of other things too, of course.

Funniest part of this to me is the 10 million gym advertising itself solely to mega-gym bros and younger clientele. A salon/barbershop isn't going to attract many people especially since a membership alone gets you nothing.

We didn't expect such large turnout so we were not prepared with a plan for how to accommodate if there are more people attending than we can have in the building at once." There’s a way to talk to people and lead and spread them out. Good security professionals know how to do this, but if you don’t give them enough support or clearly communicate reasonable expectations (“if you keep running you’ll be kicked out” was made very apparent to us) then it will devolve.

Zoo Culture is barely a gym tbf. It's a space specifically designed for influencers and photoshoots. Like yeah there's equipment there but it's only in use when there's recording being done.

The conversation is going to be TERRIBLE! I work at a boutique gym and we can expect 25-50% conversations for people who visit us on-site WITH 1:1 greeting and follow up conversations at the visit and MULTIPLE FOLLOW UP COMMUNICATION! they didn’t check people in, did not get names or contact info, and DIDN’T GET LIABILITY WAIVERS. They have no way of following up with any of these potential customers and doesn’t seem like there was anyone selling memberships. having a registration (maybe with colored wrist bands for each wave so security could sweep people who have been there too long and control who could come in during wave changes) would have not only helped with capacity, safety, legal liability for injuries and damage, and outside crowd control but MORE IMPORTANTLY FOR THE BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE allow sales to follow up with membership offers after the event. I would not be surprised if they didn’t even TRY to sign up new members and walked away with less than 5% conversion if they were. So so stupid

Gods above, my heart started pounding just seeing those crowds of people against the doors.

I dont really understand why a gym opening would be so chaotic and packed.

I'm confused but not surprised. I remember being confused the same way during the height of the pandemic when gym-crazy ppl were throwing such huge fits over not being able to go to gyms. It's just a gym?? Gym culture is so weirdly intense. 🤷

So weird to turn a workout into an event haha- training is like an ongoing thing - so this seems like THE day you'd want to skip going if you actually care about getting a good workout in😅 but I guess working out isn't actually the point of these 🤷🏿‍♀️

If I think my hotel having 1 security guard for 152 rooms is not enough, I surely believe that around 5000 people showing up to an event is not enough for 4 or even 5 security guards to handle. What, 1 security guard per 1000 arrivals? That's worse than guard to inmate ratios.

As someone who hates crowds, I would never go to any kind of grand opening or opening day of anything. I’ll never understand the people that love that stuff, or people that are obsessed with fame and meeting influencers or celebrities. It’s all so alien to me. Which is why I like these videos, gives me a glimpse into that world I’ll never venture in to. Side note: if you’re waiting in line to go to a gym you don’t have a membership with, you’re not interested in just working out lol so like why?

Only having four(4) security guards isn't enough just considering how large the gym is. I don't know how many would be enough, but it's def more than FOUR...

Swell Entertainment's videos are great, thoughtful yet snappy commentary on drama's and events that I couldn't care less about. I'm addicted to these videos!
