Unfortunately, the TCL panel lottery on the 55 inch is on the losing side. I exchanged for a new one 3 times at Best Buy and they all had the same panel issues with thick, diffused horizontal lines going across the middle of the screen, some worse than the other. Thanks Caleb for these reviews and looking very forward to your side by side comparison with the Hisense U8H. Any word on the TCL 8-series ? It's the 8 series I've been waiting for but have heard nothing yet and we're now well into October. Are we even getting the 8-series here in the U.S. ? Seems like Hisense will get my money with the U8H if I don't hear any announcements from TCL regarding the 8-series in the next couple of weeks.
GOT looks better with the lifted colors. A lot of these Directors don't realize people can't watch GOT with young family and we have to wait late at night before watching the show. Dark scenes are difficult at night becuase we already lower the brightness to save our eyes from the extra bright scenes. Not everyone watching GOT in a studio with perfect lighting and sound control. It's driving me crazy and is the reason why I wouldn't watch lots of shows out there. Another example is Ozark.
Can you turn motion smoothing on and review it's quality for all TVs? There's a good 30% of us who really appreciate frame interpolation tech. For me, it would be the single most important software feature for image quality.
@@bluemarvin743 only the older generation think of it as that. I watch more TH-cam than soap operas, which often is shot in 60fps. Check some snowboarding films with and without motion smoothing and you'll agree with me. Don't watch Saving Private Ryan with motion smoothing
Always love your reviews! You’re the main reason I went with this same TV. My only issue is that I run my tv through the e-ARC output, but my AV receiver (Denon X-2000) supports 4K, but not 120hz or Dolby vision. I’ve been scratching my head on how to run the full specs of my Series X while getting sound through my receiver without having to spend a ton for a newer one.
Ok I figured it out. Got my new tv yesterday. The tv has a EARC HDMI out. I connected an hdmi from that to the ARC on my Av receiver. In the receiver settings I turned hdmi arc on the “tv” source and now my new tv pushes the atmos/digital sound info to the receiver when I’m on one of the other 3 tv hdmi sources when having the “tv” source on my receiver selected
Caleb, If you receive the TCL 5 Series 2022, would you please do a review on it. It’s selling , but there’re know display models in the box stores to view. Thanks in advance.
I posted this on another video you did. I have been in the industry 43 years and we recently tried TCL on a budget Bar project 3 hours out of town installing 19 TCL TV's. Two were defective out of the box. I have spent 37 hours on the phone over 16 call ins with the worst customer service I have ever experienced including dealing with the government and health insurance. Every time I call I am required to repeat the 12 step troubleshooting procedure of factory resets, emailing videos of the problems, and shooting a picture of the serial number EVEN THOUGH I have a case numbers. It is designed to never take care of a warranty issue because the TV is so cheap you will give up. Our new company policy is if someone asks for TCL, we will charge $600 an hour to install them. We are also telling CEDIA, CE Pro, and INFO Com until they go bankrupt.
Someone must have been reading regarding previous youtube videos freezing up iPad TH-cam client when you try to enlarge the window. This video I can play on my iPad and the enlarge button works and doesn't lock up my TH-cam client. Multiple ones before this video did this, and this one works. 😃Thanks to the person who resolved this issue.
Calebbbbb don't forget to talk about the TCL Chopping off half the vertical pixels at 4k 120hz!!! Apparently that's the biggest problem for gamers. I believe the Hisense does that too. May not be as visible but we need to see it! Haha.
I have Gamma flicker issues when using it in VRR in some games on PC. I also cannot get into Game Mode with a 3080, not that it matters cause I still turn on 120/VRR separately and the Input Lag is phenomenal anyway. EDIT: cable was the issue
Thanks God NOT into the GAMES stuffs so don't bother me in these kinda Budget TVS , BUT Bought the NEW 85 inch just released on BESTBUY for now, for only $2000...U can f*n beat that in price, size & quality
Compare it to the LG C2 😅. I got the C2 but I've had a 65" TCL over 4 yrs and it's amazing. C2 is for my room but I wouldn't pay that again instead I'd get the TCL in the largest size and still have money left over. LG C2 is the best but TCL is close enough, definitely better than Samsung or Sony.
If you're going to compare this to the Hisense then please mention that the U8H is a completely different TV outside of the US and is far inferior. This sort of practice is very deceptive and Hisense should be called out for their shenanigans.
Hey Caleb, great fan of yours here. If it's possible, your review of TCL C735 would be really helpful! Thanks for your great work! Edit: Really was not expecting to see my country (Georgia) here :D

Could somebody please tell me what just happened to my tv? I was watching TV on the Sling TV app. All of a sudden there was a very loud high pitch screaming sound coming from the back of the TV. It was a constant screaming sound almost like an alarm or buzzer. It sounded like the TV speakers were at full volume, it was so loud. The remote control inputs still worked, but there was no sound from the TV other than the screaming noise. I turned the TV off, and the loud noise continued with it off. I had to unplug the TV for it to stop. Once I plugged the TV back in, everything worked fine again. Could this be some sort of extremely loud coil whine that just appeared and then went away?
I’m going to have to return my 55r655 due to loud screeching whenever there’s a dark scene transition. Completely ruins the cinematic experience. Apparently, this is a pretty common problem shown in Best Buy’s review section and is probably why there’s already an open box available of this exact TV. There’s a separate high pitched screech that’s common in most TVs. This one’s in the 10-12k hz range it’s always present as long as the power cable is plugged in. Really annoying for tinitus.
Just purchased an R655 instead of a U8H because I’ve already had a TCL and I prefer Roku. The picture, colors are wonderful but there’s an issue with motion and cleaning up low-res content. With the motion, even with every smoothing feature on high, there’s noticeable juddering with fast-moving action scenes. With 1080p content (aka over 50% of the content you’ll watch even in 2023), it just doesn’t look good at all, it may as well be 720p on an enormous TV. I mention these two things because the TCL R617 (2018 model) didn’t have these issues whatsoever. It’s a bit disappointing to see that almost five years later, TCL reintroduced issues that usually only plagued lower-end TVs. 7.5/10 overall but if it were more convenient, I’d send this back and try a U8H.
Just FYI the Roku app to adjust Gamma and RGB levels is broken. It is a known issue at Roku and there is a year-long thread on Reddit about the issue. It's a Roku not a TCL problem and the workaround is using a very old version of the Roku android app. I'm not going to pay $1500 for the 75" version and have any part of it not work properly. It is only the "expert picture settings" that get this operation error. Like the reviewer I'm not a fan of taking expert or fine adjustments off the TV and hiding it from users especially if it doesn't work. Roku has been zero help in resolving despite numerous e-mails.
How does this compare to the Vizio MQX? Secondly, how is the customer service? Also, since it’s Chinese do you worry about it (and Hisense) getting banned like Huawei and ZTE products.
Here in Eugene Or, our ABC outlet is 720P, our CBS, NBC are 1080P. I have the rights to view the Xfinity Streaming app, but only use on occasion and I don't pay for the privilege, it's part of the Comcast Community's. FS1 for drag racing, The Five and very little else.
I also have the R625 65” . I got a great panel with very little dark vignetting that’s not even noticeable in the corners and you can see alittle yellow streaking on full white image around the screen but nothing bad. You can’t see any of this in the real world scenes. I got a really good panel and my tv is still running great after 3 years. It’s got a great black uniformity . Contrast is great. It’s got great color volume and great WCG. It hits 1000nits in HDR and high nits in SDR. Only thing it’s a 60hrz panel but I don’t mind. Very few games play in 120fps. Maybe in a few years games will play at 120hz but no need to buy a 120hz panel just yet. Unless you are a PC gamer or course. The TCL R625 2019 model got a better review then the R635 2020 model. But they are pretty much the same besides 2.1 ports and it’s supposedly a 120hrz tv on the R635 but there has been discrepancies if it can hit 120hrz. Anyway, sorry long winded here. The 2019,2020 and 2022 6 series are great tvs. The 2021 not so much. It had slot of problems.
How are tvs that are produced now struggle with low bit stuff? My 9 year old 1080p sharp has zero macro blocks. But when I watch the same content on my 2022 hisense u6h it's so bad. Macro blocks all over the place. But streaming content looks amazing. It's not even a competition between the two tvs.
I have a question. I have a PS4 (the regular one) and my TCL hooked up to a sound bar. When I switch input to play my PS4, my TV switches to 1080p 60hz. When I switch back to my television, does the television switch back to 120 hz 4k programming or do I have to manually switch back to that setting? Thanks
Caleb, so the question I keep trying to get answered is if you want a large screen pure Roku experience, I.e. turn on the set and it open right up to the Roku Home Screen, is the 65”/75” r655 the best option out there. My wife doesn’t want to see a Google or Samsung start page, just straight to Roku. I assume the U8H isn’t an option. Thoughts?
U got that right thats why i bought the NEW 85 inch 65R55 from Bestbuy ..Gonna deliver on Monday cant wait, this better an hIENSE u8h ..MORE BRIGHTER IN HDR dark scenes & better in Dolby vision
@@SFBenjaminK Just got the same tv a couple of days ago. So far loving it over my 75R635 it replaced. My only complaint is there is zero cable management for the 85" model.
For SDR peak brightness, did you set the backlight to 100 with mode Brighter? Because once you get to 65-70 on the backlight, it gets super bright for SDR, any higher and you are staring at the sun.
i would get this tv over the u6k but the amount of glitches it has is really turning me away from it especially since the smart features working is pretty important to me since i’m not hooking it up to a console or apple tv.
Reviews are great, but wish they would mention reported issues which with this model R655 has a coil whine noise. This noise is what's holding me back from buying this model.
I still have the R617 from 2018. I realized that it had just been updated and am curious as to why the gamma was changed to 2.4. I used to do 2.4 for about a year but opted to do 2.2 again. Wondering if it's a bug or if TCL/Roku believes 2.4 is "correct".
@@cntswn I do 2.2. It's entirely dependent on room lighting and I play in a nearly pitch-black room when gaming and watching movies. 2.0 is for brighter rooms.
This, or best buys LG qned83? I have had both in the last 4 days and have had to return both do to defects. They are delivering my choice of either in 3 days, and I need to decide which to one to go with. I think the TCL had better image quality, and better blacks, being a VA, versus LG's ips, but now I dont know which one to go with.
My 2018 TCL just burned its LCD panel, after 4 years, my $600 tv is not functional. Super not happy. Had a repair dude show up, can’t believe it. I’d love another TV but with a Best Buy 4tear warranty I’m still loosing. Won’t be getting another. Got my mom two 4series and one just overheated. Not ok with this..
Every time I use the voice-control, the television replies, making a lot of noise that is VERY annoying. I wonder if there is a way to turn off the reply of the television, thanks.
What do I think of the R655? I think if this is calibrated then it's best for movies 🍿 and for those who stream their favorite shows using that support Dolby Vision. I just ordered this and plan to use it in my bedroom to stream shows. I bought this because of the dynamic range Dolby Vision gives you. But for a living room I'd save more for a brighter mini-LED tv. Maybe a Sony or Samsung.
Awesome Review!!! People I have been using 55inch u8h (paid $649) for a little over a month. I would recommend everyone to try Hisense U8H it is AMAZING!! I also have Samsung KS8000 and Sony X900f and U8H simply smokes both of them in picture quality. It does have its own issues just like any other tv including OLEDs. Blacks in majority of the contentbis so deep it seems like an OLED many times. Now like i said it does have an issue like Color Banding but honestly I have not seen in majority of the content I've watched (movies) or played (games). Majority of the content I have watched on U8H looks phenomenal!!! It easily beats any tv that are in the similar price range and also many of the tvs that actually cost more. Like I mentioned I paid $649 for my U8H and I can easily live with Color banding in some content because majority of the content I did not see. Whenever it comes in stock try it. If you get a bad panel which can happen to all the manufacturers don't hate the tv just exchange it. Good luck!!!!
They steal your data. hisense is literally a Chinese government controlled and funded company. They aren’t exactly friendly with western nations and want nothing more than to infiltrate.
I was looking at either getting a TCL 6 series or LG QNED and was wondering what's the better option? I'm gonna use them mostly for gaming on my Series X.
It’s because the Xbox Series X and PS5’s HBO Max apps don’t actually show the show in Dolby Vision. I had a similar experience - my Apple TV is on one OLED, so I had to use my other’s internal wifi and apps for watching HotD in Dolby Vision. I figured my PS5/Series S would have better wifi, allowing for better streaming resolution, but they only show the show in HDR10 despite the app having the show marked as Dolby Vision.
This is super interesting and looking deeper into. But even if it was in HDR10 on the Xbox, that still doesn’t explain the dramatically lifted APL in game mode only on the TCL. Out of game mode, the TV looked correct
Can the tv do 4k 120hz, dolby vision, and vrr all at the same time in game mode. I remember hearing that last years models were not able to do this. I believe vrr and 120hz were not capable of being used together, and i’m almost certain dolby vision gaming and vrr did not work together. Thanks in advance.
Heard it can't along with the Hisense U8H because they still aren't using the new chips but The 2023 models I heard will as they should have the new latests ones that this years sadly didn't receive.
There are functionally no real Dolby vision games. Halo infinite is one, but it looks just as good in HDR. Dolby vision gaming isn't real. It's a myth lol. You can't name a handful because we don't even have 5.
Did you do something different with your camera settings with this video? It looks very different, contrasty, the equipment behind you and on the wall lost in shadow compared to other recent videos. Maybe you had the ISO setting set very high?
If you could only choose one based on compatibility with Dolby vision and Dolby Atmos sound bars. As well as picture quality, Would you pick TCL or Hisense? And would you pick roku or Google tv?
I'd go with the TCL Roku tv, I had the TCL Google and the OS was laggy and apps wouldn't load up fast, I since replaced it with the Roku version an haven't looked back. I heard Hisense is good too but from talking to the Best buy rep, he said the TCLs are better.🤷🏿♂️
I noticed severe blocky artifacts in dark areas on the TCL 6-series...on the floor at my local Best Buy. It's probably a bad video file or something, but if the demo content at Best Buy looks terrible compared to even a $300 tv then there's no way I'm risking my money on it.
I really enjoy watching your videos, and it’s one helped me choose my purchase of 85R655 tv. I have had it for a little over a month now but have been getting bold white vertical bars that come up from the bottom of the screen, they don’t show for long but it very annoying to say the least. Just wondering if you have ever seen this and if you have could you give any help. Ty
I have zero clue about tvs. Is there function that cleans up those "trashy blocky" image you mentioned with different manufacturers? Is it called upscaler?
Please review the R745 VS the 85 inch R655. Right now the R745 is on a huge sale, and it is roughly 300 dollars cheaper. There's no direct comparison yet between the two TVs.
I wonder how new TCL TVs hold up in the long term. I have an R605 and I have had to replace the power board twice. It's a known common issue with this TV. The good thing is that it is a cheap part and only takes a few minutes to swap out.
Looking at this tcl, u8h, or lg b2 in 75. Can’t seem to find the Hisense anywhere and the oled b2 is just a few hundred more. What would y’all lean towards. Medium lit living room will be its home
A lot of people claim there is a squeal from the back of this tv when the screen goes black, have you heard this is there a fix or are they defective?? Was just getting ready to buy but may change my mind!! I hope you take a min to respond.
I'm confused... isn't there a Roku TV app that will let owners choose "Expert Settings" on their TCL Roku TVs? In other words give the owner access to more calibration settings and such.
I would like to see a comparison between the TCL and the Hisense to see which one is better in a living room (not so much for games, except for the occasional Switch game).
Most people already did one and the U8H wiped it but it doesn't have true 4k 120hz at the moment but will in the form of an update. plus it's got posterization issues while gaming but it's possible that could be fixed in a update like the 4k 120hz will be.
@@hypno18s What do you mean when you say "most people already did one and the U8H wiped it"? Do you mean that there are reviews (other than FOMO's) comparing the two TV's? If so could you point me to those comparisons? Thanks.

Wil & Jada only watch programs on micro LED
I’m torn between this and the x90k, I’m worried about the motion not being near as good. But mini led would be nice for contrast
@Josh Wallace apparently an update addressed the blooming issue. It’s supposedly not nearly as bad now.
Can you turn motion smoothing on and review it's quality for all TVs? There's a good 30% of us who really appreciate frame interpolation tech. For me, it would be the single most important software feature for image quality.
Why?
@@BB-ed4om Because good motion smoothing is the single most important difference in picture quality between TVs to me
By your math, 70% abhor motion smoothing. I'm one of them. I don't want to watch soap operas.

Just connect the Xbox to the tv then run an optical from the tv to the Denon.
If we take Samsung, LG, Sony, and Hisense with which models from this brand can you directly compare this TV, especially picture quality?
Someone must have been reading regarding previous youtube videos freezing up iPad TH-cam client when you try to enlarge the window. This video I can play on my iPad and the enlarge button works and doesn't lock up my TH-cam client. Multiple ones before this video did this, and this one works. 😃Thanks to the person who resolved this issue.
Calebbbbb don't forget to talk about the TCL Chopping off half the vertical pixels at 4k 120hz!!! Apparently that's the biggest problem for gamers. I believe the Hisense does that too. May not be as visible but we need to see it! Haha.
Wait hold up It does it too!?
Worth upgrading from the 635?
I have Gamma flicker issues when using it in VRR in some games on PC.
I also cannot get into Game Mode with a 3080, not that it matters cause I still turn on 120/VRR separately and the Input Lag is phenomenal anyway.
EDIT: cable was the issue
Thanks God NOT into the GAMES stuffs so don't bother me in these kinda Budget TVS , BUT Bought the NEW 85 inch just released on BESTBUY for now, for only $2000...U can f*n beat that in price, size & quality
as usual, cable was the issue, tried two certified opticals and no luck, had to go back to a copper one
How would you say this set compares to the R646 since it seems they have ironed out the majority of the issues it had?
It's the same tv but refined a little bit. They aren't world's apart.
he dont go backword
Maybe try turning off Game Mode on the Xbox, but leave it enabled on the TV. Games were really blown out for me on my 6-Series when both were enabled.
Can try that. But without changing anything on the Xbox, the TV looked dramatically different in a non-game mode picture preset.
The TCL R655 was not submitted for THX Certification... However the 8k TCL 65R648 is THX certified. Be sure to read the fine print.
I have TCL P607 from 2018, but I'm starting to get the upgrade itch even though it still works great.
caught this bad boy on sale this morning out of the blue at best buy. within a week went from 699 - 799 back down to 599. got it with the five year insurance
just paid for mine gonna go pick it up tomorrow 65 inch for 550 is crazy ill add the protection plan on friday i cant wait
I have already made up my mind for the U8H but I still want to see your comparison!!
Same here, looking forward to the tv and the comparison.
Trust me U8H gonna blow the R655 away it gets significantly brighter over 2000 nits, in fact it’s the brightest tv this year
I have the R655. It's fantastic. I recommend it. That said, I think the U8H beats it.
A lot of people are complaining about a coil whine with this tv.
I've had similar issues. Now I stream exclusively through a 4K fire stick, and honestly it's like night and day.
Im currently comparing U7H and TCL 6 series. Is U7H better for bright room viewing compared to TCL 6 series?
The tcl will be marginally better.
Looking forward to your versus video with the U8H.
Thanks for the video, Caleb. I was wondering why this TV has such bad reviews on Amazon?
R655 or XL?
This TV does auto detect game vs movie on PS5. ALLM on PS5 works flawlessly.
getting this for my series x. Hope I like it
How does this compare to the Vizio MQX? Secondly, how is the customer service? Also, since it’s Chinese do you worry about it (and Hisense) getting banned like Huawei and ZTE products.
Here in Eugene Or, our ABC outlet is 720P, our CBS, NBC are 1080P. I have the rights to view the Xfinity Streaming app, but only use on occasion and I don't pay for the privilege, it's part of the Comcast Community's. FS1 for drag racing, The Five and very little else.
I'm still happy with my R625 and R635.
Thanks
Loved This video. Thank you. I have a 65 inch r646. Wanted to get a 75r 655. Did you notice any raised black bars in your testing? Thanks.
Thoughts?
Yup. I’d do the R655
Would you spare some time to recommend a TV for Bright room like sunroom. Even anything from OLED lineup
I had 4 dark horizontal dots on the bottom screen. I'm exchanging it for another one and playing the panel lottery.
Having the TCL R625 and the R635 makes me appreciate these two TV'S even more because they are great TV'S for the average consumer.
U got that right thats why i bought the NEW 85 inch 65R55 from Bestbuy ..Gonna deliver on Monday cant wait, this better an hIENSE u8h ..MORE BRIGHTER IN HDR dark scenes & better in Dolby vision
@@SFBenjaminK when you get yours please let us know if you hear the squeal from the back of set when the screen is black! Thanks
@@SFBenjaminK Just got the same tv a couple of days ago. So far loving it over my 75R635 it replaced. My only complaint is there is zero cable management for the 85" model.
Do you think the deep blacks and all the other stuff can be fixed by a firm update great job.
I like running 2.0 on the games
Wasn't Caleb the host for the TruValu shootout this year? I can't find a video about it here, what am i doing wrong in my search?
What do I think of the R655? I think if this is calibrated then it's best for movies 🍿 and for those who stream their favorite shows using that support Dolby Vision. I just ordered this and plan to use it in my bedroom to stream shows. I bought this because of the dynamic range Dolby Vision gives you. But for a living room I'd save more for a brighter mini-LED tv. Maybe a Sony or Samsung.
hows the local dimming?

Wonder if the U8HQ IPS trash will look better than the X900F (or worse) ..... hmm .....

I was looking at either getting a TCL 6 series or LG QNED and was wondering what's the better option? I'm gonna use them mostly for gaming on my Series X.
Lg is the better option if the QNED has HDMI 2.1 support. Game mode options work surprisingly well on my LG OLED C1 with my Ps5 and Series X.
@@jovanyvera6963 Awesome! Thank you very much. I see an LG 75" in my near future. 😊
@@scottyrob82 no problem. I would make sure that tv also supports vrr that is a must to have a smooth experience while gaming.
The TCL6 series is a much better TV for cheaper. Don't buy an LG QNED most use IPS panels which are inferior.
Only LG's OLED TVs should be considered. Steer clear of their QNED line.
@@Caleb_Denison you’re definitely right, it’s weird at how bright that is.
@@VaydaladaVodalada So, TCL suspects it is due to HDR10 as well, but still not sure why it is a game mode only issue. Still digging.

What's the difference between this R655 and the European TCL C83 and C93?

Caleb does your 75inch give off heat from the screen? Mine does. Normal?
Can the tv do 4k 120hz, dolby vision, and vrr all at the same time in game mode. I remember hearing that last years models were not able to do this. I believe vrr and 120hz were not capable of being used together, and i’m almost certain dolby vision gaming and vrr did not work together.
Thanks in advance.
Heard it can't along with the Hisense U8H because they still aren't using the new chips but The 2023 models I heard will as they should have the new latests ones that this years sadly didn't receive.
The only tvs that currently can do 120fps Dolby Vision are the LG OLED.
There are functionally no real Dolby vision games. Halo infinite is one, but it looks just as good in HDR.
Dolby vision gaming isn't real. It's a myth lol. You can't name a handful because we don't even have 5.

I have the same questions…thank you!

What tv would you recommend for a room that has light coming thru the windows at a similar price point.
I really enjoy watching your videos, and it’s one helped me choose my purchase of 85R655 tv. How can I READ this review? I went to the DT website but couldn't find a printed version?
Please review the R745 VS the 85 inch R655. Right now the R745 is on a huge sale, and it is roughly 300 dollars cheaper. There's no direct comparison yet between the two TVs.
I wonder how new TCL TVs hold up in the long term.
I have an R605 and I have had to replace the power board twice. It's a known common issue with this TV. The good thing is that it is a cheap part and only takes a few minutes to swap out.
P607 running every day since launch with no issues. Best thing I've ever had.

75 inch Hisense U8H or TCL R655?
I would like to see a comparison between the TCL and the Hisense to see which one is better in a living room (not so much for games, except for the occasional Switch game).
Most people already did one and the U8H wiped it but it doesn't have true 4k 120hz at the moment but will in the form of an update. plus it's got posterization issues while gaming but it's possible that could be fixed in a update like the 4k 120hz will be.
