I'm the player at 13:08. I remember this duel but I had no idea it was CGB. He had probably the best mono-red start which is Kumano on turn 1 into a 3/3 Feldon on turn 2 going first. That's not easy to stabilise against without a 2 cost answer in your opening hand. I gave him a good run but I totally misplayed that last move. My life was at 1 and I wanted to start pushing damage before he drew a burn spell thinking the Reinforcements would be enough if he drew another creature but I didn't think of Squee. I thought he was bluffing with a land since he didn't play his last card on his turn and he would have played any burn spell if he had one. He speculated my card choices were to counter a red meta and that's partially correct. Dennicks are in there solely for red but Surge of Salvation is in for red and all the black / blue control decks. If they feel pressured, they will tap out for Phyrexian Jace and try to give something -3 only to get blanked by Surge and then lose Jace on my turn. In this game I definitely felt hosed on the draw and I'm glad CGB mentioned the tempo advantage he had on the play after realising. If I had gone first, Dennick would have been protected as he was by Surge but then buffed next turn by Valiant Veteran so CGB would have had to waste the burn spell on the Veteran because I wouldn't have sacrificed Dennick by blocking so aggressively since I would be able to rely on the lifelink. In back foot situations like this game, I think the best strategy is to remove as many of the red creatures as possible with sacrificial blocks rather than take the hits. Trading creatures to an empty board makes their top deck burn spells less impactful.
@@mo938tbf he play almost every deck he makes like a control deck . As someone relatively new to this channel it is nice seeing a non control way to play stuff coming from cgb
I love how CGB got into the mindset of a mono red aggro player - instead of using Play with Fire with Mechanized Warfare on the battlefield to get 100% lethal, he waited to get it exiled and still top decked lethal 😄
@covertgoblue I'm so glad that you show not only the wins, but the loses as well, this is much more entertaining and interesting to watch, thank you for that
I like how CGB started the video already dead inside, saw someone playing bant with courier briefcase, thought it was something new, perked up, saw it was atraxa crap, then died inside again. Truly one of the formats of all time.
I find this deck usually performs quite well against go-wide and other non-red aggro decks. Its not that good in mirror matchups since there's waaay faster mono-red decks in the format. Dragons, pump and super low curve mono-red decks come to mind. Overall it does achieve a really good winrate though, since only half of your games will be mirrors.
I propose that B01 Standard becomes a format a part, with its own rules and banned cards. For instance, if you're on the draw, you get a free mulligan. Or something else to off set the play-draw imbalance.
That's an interesting idea, since the banning Bo3 standard on arena has been a lot better but bo1 didn't seem to change much. I like to play bo1 every now and then especially with meme decks and the meta feels so much worse.
“Many Magic the Gathering players” don’t understand game etiquette. 48:53. I’ve been increasingly put off by the toxic “good game” culture in Arena. Like a game of chess, a player can concede and congratulate the winner with a good game. But a winning player (or player thinking they’ve won) should not be issuing a “good game” - it comes off as arrogant. Should remember there is a human being on the other end of the screen.
16:00 Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like Arena cheesed CGB out of a 2-for-1 with the assigned damage by the Swiftspear. Arena assigned all 3 damage to the 2 toughness lord and none to the timely reinforcements. I think it did so because the reinforcements was 2 toughness from the lord buff, but if it had assigned 2 and 1 damage the reinforcements would have died once the lord died because it would have shrunk
Damage assignment happens before replacement effects are taken into account. So it assigns lethal damage to the first blocker and has no further damage to assign. Then the damage is modified only when it is dealt.
48:30 you should have used the play with fire on the stack so you could hit him for 3 damage that way you would have been lethal regardless of what you drew with playing the exiled Squee.
My RDW uses 1 less mountain and squee for a full set of reckless impulse. I found that flooding was worse than bricking, plus the extra impulses can help find that 3rd land for warfare or squee.
CGB unable to go the distance and getting clapped in a losing streak with monored. Glad I'm not the only one that experiences this whenever I try to monored.
If you want something I have yet to see anyone else play in standard: I got to mythic easily last season and am easily climbing again now with a Gruul backup/modified/counters deck. My current deck feels A tier, but would love to know if there is better version a professional deck builder could come up with.

Ah, the monkey red deck. I must say, I've witnessed quite a spectacle when you unleash your strategic prowess. It's like watching a grandmaster at work, or not. Any trace of cognitive reasoning or processing must be put on hold. I was dumbfounded when I realized that the more drool pooled around me, the more my badges magically transformed.
