We wanted to see how much time it actually takes to build a diorama from scratch, so we decided to challenge ourselves by building the same fantasy diorama spending 1 hour, 10 hours and 100 hours on each one! Turns out, it's a pretty huge difference between them!

In addition I'd also restrict the allowed tools in some way.
Doesn't seem fair to use expensive things like a 3D printer for a cheap project, even if the supplies are cheap.
And just including the tool prices inside the budget also doesn't seem right, especially for basic things most people have anyways like a drill.
I like how the 1 hour house almost looks like a dilapidated shack, the 10 hour house looks like a humble farmer's home, and the 100 hour house is the town tavern. You could put all 3 together a build a story of a village. I like them all!
I was thinking along the same lines.
The 1 hour shack is either an outbuilding for the farm, or a run down home.
The 10 hour farm house and the town inn.

It doesn't really look dilapidated though, just bare. I was thinking it could be the newly built house of a young couple just starting out.

@@samsowden I would say because of the building style they are all from the same age, just for very different purpose and cost. :-)

A witch's cabin in 1 hour
A comfy cottage in 10 hours
A large tavern-inn in 100 hours
And they're all ✨*amazing~*✨

I hope these really put in perspective how much time goes into these for people who may complain about your upload schedule or anything like that. These kinds of projects are not fast. The more time you're allowed, the better they become. It's the same for just about any other artistic form of content; animations, stop motion, diorama creation, mural paintings, digital art; it all takes time. Keep up the fantastic work, Martina!
It always amazes me how much time it takes to do all of he finishing details. Sometimes I’ll look at a piece I’m working on and it just looks so unexceptional, but when I put the time into finishing it instead of giving up it’s worth it.
My goodness, that texturing work/shading on the side of the 100 hour building is MAGNIFICENT! The little 'cracks' and peeling of the sides looks so good. I am also reeling at those little lanterns, so much detail!
There is something soothing about watching a master of their craft create something. I know why master artists were so revered in the recent past.

I love how the houses fit together like they could be part of the same village, only the 1 hour house has just been built by some poor newlyweds who don't have much yet!

Or, like I thought, it could be a sort of “Pokemon evolution” of an inn, instead.. you know, the villager starts with that cabin, with one or two guests, they see it’s good, they spread the voice, the villager makes lots of money, and he can build an inn bigger than the one before, until he builds that big boy there. Honestly for an hour, the little house is really impressive! The textures look really good to me. But of course they just get better and better. The ten hour is really nice, cozy, also great textures and I really like the paint job. But the 100 hour house is STUNNING. I love the shape of it, and the miniatures bring a lot of life to it. So many details packed into that thing. The little lamps might be my favorite, so cute.
Yeah. I disagree the 10 hr. Is the best value. The 100 hour is worth every bit of the time.
What would the one-hour house look like with another 30 minutes of painting?
@@csbruce I think with an extra 30 minutes of painting all 3 would fit in the same diorama as different levels of opulence.

The 100 hours building looks it just stepped out of a Ghibli movie, it's so whimsical and detailed! I really admire your skills with foam, glue and paint to produce such masterpieces. Even the 1 hour project is structurally complete and looks like an actual abandoned building.
As someone who has a horrible way of gaging results for my own builds, this is a great way to set realistic expectations for myself when I do my builds. Great job!
Same. It’s a good reminder not to be too hard on myself and to trust the process, since the first hour (or whatever the equivalent is for whatever project I’m doing) really isn’t going to look perfect. That’s why I also appreciated that Martina started putting the clock in her video so you can see how much damn time everything actually takes! TH-cam vids tend to give us an idealized view of the creation process lol. Glad she shows us all the bumps in the road and time it takes to make these amazing projects.
(Also btw it’s gauging! That word is a weird one, it gives a lot of people issues lol.)

I feel like the level of detail on the 10 hour build is good enough that when you place it next to the 100 hour build, it still looks cohesive, like the two buildings could be found in the same town.

I'm amazed at your gluing abilities. Whenever I glue something, there is glue everywhere and it never stays right away. I would have those little glue strands or have it seeping out from everywhere if I did it!
Not sure if you're looking for genuine tips, but usually a lower heat setting will help with those problems! You'll get less working time, but it will be much more "instant" and a bit less stringy (although there definitely is some level of technique to get rid of strings completely. It's a similar motion to the "twist and pull" method of preventing paint/juice drip)

The houses lined up look like a representation of one of those Medieval town simulator mobile games where your houses get nicer and bigger once you earn more coin.
It was a fun video to watch, but honestly you could be building just houses for the rest of this channel's life and I'd still be watching. This is sooo satisfying to watch! I'm itching to build something like this myself now.
I just shared this video on my social media feed to demonstrate to those who don't build dioramas just how much time and effort goes into these little scenes. I am currently building 10 book-themed dioramas for our local school libraries, and am limiting myself to about 20 hrs per diorama to finish on time. I constantly feel the urge to put just a "little" more time to add all of the little details that I love, but have to stay disciplined and content with the 20 hr level of detail that time allows. All 3 of your builds are SO great - and those little resin printed lanterns are ridiculously cute and genius. :) Thanks for posting!
The 10 hour looks great, and the 100 hour is just unbelievable. You are so good at what you do, and the cinematography and music you utilize make everything even better. Blown away.
If you're looking to do more ambitious dioramas I'd love to see one with moving parts! Like a mill wheel that spins or something I just think that would be cool :)

I love to bring dioramas with movement to life and I it'll be great to see such a diorama here as well. I've just built the entrance area of a castle with a moving gate and drawbridge. That's not that hard at all. There are so many interesting movements that can be integrated.

What you were able to accomplish in 1 hour alone is mind-blowing to me! That 100 hour is on another level!
She did the challenge entirely wrong, though. The whole point of the three-part timed art challenges is to go from longest to shortest, trying to produce the same end product with shorter and shorter time. She completely took the CHALLENGE out of it, other than just trying to see how much she can build in each amount of time! While that still makes for a good video in some way, it is not the point of this type of challenge. I love all she does, regardless!
I usually see them done in this order, the challenge part is just trying to get it done and there isn't a rule book to it or anything so it's doesn't really matter how she does it. You can't really say she did it "wrong" of there isn't only one right way.
And another 30 minutes…or even 10…devoted to the painting could make the first one look a lot better.

@@nixiestarlight158 it’s not a competition, there are no rules she has to follow. The form this “challenge” takes *changes depending on what you are trying to demonstrate.* If you’re doing it to be funny/entertaining (like Drawfee), you might go high to low. But when you’re trying to show how much more involved your projects can get when you have more time, it’s more logical and entertaining (imo) to go low to high like Martina did.
i love that i went back several times to rewatch the "wild mom" appearance because it was so damn cute and then noticed afterwards that that was the most replayed section of the video. glad we're all on the same page here LOL

There´s this 80/20 therory that says: When working on any kind of project, you complete about 80% of the work in about 20% of the time. The longer you work on a project, the more details are goonna be included but the effort increases drastically. I think that really makes a lot of sense here; as you said, the 10 hour one looks still very good, but I also think, that in your case, the time on the 100 hour one was reeeeally well spent. Your creations always impress me a lot and every diorama was incredibly good for the time you took to make it!
is it a theory, i think its just a fact? like, if you want to paint the sky, cover a canvas in blue, and youre mostly done,
@@athena1491 I think it’s a concept that may apply sometimes but that doesn’t have to be true all the time. It’s definitely found in a lot of different areas (economics, computing, etc).

@@athena1491 I’d say in areas where there is a defined goal (e.g. a mathematic equation - you either solve it with 100% effort you put in, in 100% time it took you, or you don’t).

It would be cool if Nerdforge tackled other challenges like this but maybe have a budget limit instead and then forge all different houses into a bigger diorama village! Not sure if it would be possible but fun challenge 😊

Martina you my dear never cease to amaze me! 3 dioramas, 3 different sizes, 3 difficultly levels. With each one you can tell how much time you basically had with the 3 outcomes. Each more better then the last. Such an imagination you have Martina. I just love it!!
I'm always amazed at how much character and detail the "dry brushing" stages gives the pieces. They always seem very flat before and then afterwards everything just pops.
Could you do a diarama with cheap tools and expensive tools? I want to see if the expensive tools are better :)

Depends really i see people painting kits and sets with a cheap ass airbrush cheap junk but still manage to do avery decent job if thay spend more on the airbrush compresser and paints theres a huge differnce but even with cheap grade stuff if you know a few tricks u can get away with top tier work
Substract all 3d prints, time used factor 1,25 or so. Here is approx result.

With such dioramas, what I often regret about is that display light. Great for appreciating every single detail, yet I'd love to see this house in a more natural environment. It would add more magic and let us admire this peace even more!

I was just wondering when a new Nerforge video would drop and this turned out to be one of my favorites so far, impressive as always, big love and respect to you guys.
When Bjorn first reached the meadow, he was struck by the beauty of the surrounding lands as well as the obvious richness of the soil. He packed up his family, and they moved there the next year. Living at first in a large tent, Bjorn and his three strong sons quickly felled some trees and soon had a small but cozy wooden structure that helped the family live through the next winter. At first pale in color, the small house soon turned black from the pitch that was used to weatherproof the still-porous fresh wood used in its construction. After a few years, the family continued to grow in both numbers and wealth, and Bjorn was proud to sit at the head of the table in the wood-framed house his grandchildren had helped construct, where he himself had placed the last stones in the chimney. The small black house was just a few meters away, and the family kept it in good repair and used it as a storehouse and barn. As time passed, the rich earth (tilled by plows kept in the small black shed) produced bumper crop after bumper crop, providing nourishment for the many dozens of family members as well as the rest of the small village that had begun to form around their land. Just two generations after Bjorn's body had been buried beneath the earth he had so loved, the family was powerful and wealthy enough to have a much larger home built, this time mostly from stone. The edifice towered over the nearby structures and further added to the family wealth with the highly successful ale-house on its ground floor....while the smaller wood-frame house continued to be used by one branch of Bjorn's descendants (by this time many had moved away in search of new fortunes or to help grow the family's trading empire) as a traditional gift from the family to the eldest son of each generation upon his marriage. All through the years, the family remembered their roots, and the small black shed that had been their first toehold on the land was kept in good repair, serving both as a reminder of their humble roots and as a safe place to store sacks of grain and jugs of wine for the winter.

This video is so important to all of us as creators. It shows how more time definitely creates masterpieces but it also shows how limited time can be more profitable but less on details. I loved the last one immensely it is not only an incredible build but it really shows how your detailing and inspiration is key to creating something awesome

It is a little......different when, in a time where people are posting videos daily, to see a channel that has some time in between their videos. However, I'm not complaining, because usually the video is worth the wait.
I really don't get why people force themselves to punishing schedules leaving no time for living. They're not robots, they're people.
Honestly if a channel pushes content every day it soon goes from watching later, to skipping this one, to not watching any of them any more. Once, maybe twice a week is fine.
I don't actually have a clue how long is between Nerdforge ones. But I'd rather see good content from people who enjoy making it. That being said, the youtube algorithm is a bitch. People pushing themselves for daily content probably don't have patreon or something.
@@nagranoth_ there are a few channels that i watch everyday. but its almost like some forget that the real worl exists and so do responsibilities. so, i cut back on cgannel subscriptions and dont even watch people on twitch anymore
The 10 hour house looks really good. 👌 100 hours is amazing. 100 hours is a lot of time, but if I worked on a house that long it would still probably look like the 1 hour one and I would be very happy.
I think all 3 look great 😅 I just feel like everything Martina and Hansi do just end up being amazing because we can see they put so much dedication to the projects that the probability of them being bad is exactly zero!
Would love to see more painting videos. The dioramas are super cool, but my favorites are the sketchbook one and the painting in the cabin in the woods ones!
It’s like three different stages of the same building’s construction- like what The Burrow (from Harry Potter) might’ve looked like while being built, then 15 years ago, and present day.
It would've been cool to hold the budget for each house constant so time was the only factor informing the results.

ive had this really bad case of art block for the lonGEST time now, like literally years, and i literally found your channel by accident last night, but your videos and art style (mine is v similar) have helped me start again and im already feeling so much better
These kind of challenges actually show how much time creators put in their creations, even a small project takes a lot of effort. And it also shows how we sometimes overestimate our abilities to do smth in a limited amount of time, that's why you should plan stuff. Overall, all 3 houses look amazing!

I really like the comparison, it shows not only that investing more time leads to better results (meaning dont rush yourself and do things last second -like me lol) and that you put just soo much work and detailing into your pieces. Its amazing!
I wonder what you do with all your projects? I mean they are all amazing and gorgeous, but do you have enough space to store them all on display or what do you do with them all?
A great video to show to clients as well. I have had people want to have quick results because it's cheaper. But if they have the budget and give you the proper time, you can create amazing things!
So…what do you do with all your projects? Place them in a giant display case, give them as gifts or sell them?
I love the painting "solo" and all the attention is just on the project and the paint and Martina's favorite part.

I loved that you built the dioramas from fastest paced to slowest and not the other way around! When I read the title, I somehow expected a video full of second-hand stress but seeing you smiling from excitement instead and how you immersed yourself into the more and more time consuming builds was really inspiring! I've only just discovered your channel (Finally came out from under the rock where I was living!) I'm in love with your channel now and am binge watching EVERYTHING... and obviously subscribed. Love this video in particular. My equipment consists of a steel rule and a scalpel... whilst you do use your 3d printer the majority of your work is just hand made... gives me hope for my tiny projects

Looking at that 100 hour house reminds me of the ink drawing I'm currently making. You should make your diorama version of the Burrow (the Weasley family house) my version has base of an english cottage with a new extension for every child i would love to see what you could make.

Not sure how I got into your channel last Fall, but I am glad I did. I don't even make any of the dioramas/projects you do. I typically don't even like anything related to Fantasy. But, I see your gifts in your work and you are a very talented artist. I really have learned so much from what you do and I will keep coming back. Thanks for sharing all that you do.
There's that famous church in Finland that's like 800 years old (iirc), tarred timbers, looks like a medieval black blob, as it's just a heavily tarred and ancient wooden structure! So yeah, you did awesome in 1 hour; you recreated an 800 year old medieval house! Also, Hi, Wild Mom!!

she’s definitely not a procrastinator, she seems to do hours of work in one day. i could never, any 100 hours project would take six months for me to do it. if i didn’t decide to give up halfway through 😬
I love these videos! They are all entertaining! The only thing I might suggest you add is maybe links to some of the stuff you used!?! Like, what kind of LEDs did you use? What 3D files did you use? And so on!

Amongst all YT miniature and diorama creators I am watching, I must say that your paint job is most realistic. Even in close details all the woods and stones look real, I couldn't almost tell if they are made or real. And those pins as rivets on doors and windows. Huge talent. BTW, transition from regular light to dramatic dark, that's is also huge filming and editing skill. Kudos

As always, beautiful work. I would love to see what you guys could do with a set-piece on a historical subject, like maybe the fight at the Chateau de Hougoumont during the Battle of Waterloo, or something on a similar scale. Bet it would truly be amazing!

I would love to see the two other projects "completed" at 100 hours. You and yours do such a wonderful job. Don't let them sit.
Honestly, they all look apart of the same village. As we've seen replicated throughout films, the ideal village would have included all 3 for 3 different classes. The 1hr is where the "poor" people would live on the outskirts of town away from society; those who work their butts off with next to no pay and seen as blight on society- possibly even the town drunk. The 10 hr would be in the actual village or extremely close to it along a well travelled path. It's where people would live in the back or upstairs while the majority of the structure was a shop of some kind: all the towns people enjoy their company and they help everyone - even the town drunk. The 100 hr is the mayors home, he can only afford such opulence because he steals from everyone "below" him but he boosts about his home as if he's earned it. Watching you sparks my desire to get crafting! I love it, be proud of all 3. You've built yourself a village!!
