I went to Africa and used doxycycline for two weeks as an anti malaria. To my delighted surprise, the adult acne I had for most of my adult life completely disappeared. My skin stayed clear for the ensuing years with only the occasional recurrence. Used it a second time for two weeks a few years later and my skin has stayed clear. A miracle!
It’s great I agree. But my Dr had me on them for 10yrs! Coming off them caused 10yrs of Hellish Boils from head to toe! So I suggest if U take this medicine, quit it b4 4months. Vibratabs@30mg each tab. Morning & Night. Horror was what happened when I stopped it. I can’t prove it was due to this particular drug tho. It was the only one I took other than pain killers.🤷🏻♂️
This is old but does anyone know for women if you will get BV, Yeast or any other women issues? Can someone tell me if they had any problems....Thank you
I took this when I was in my teenage years for moderate acne and it would make me puke during school. Also when I became a young adult the acne came back 10x worse and at that point I couldn’t afford to see a dermatologist so the severe cystic acne was left untreated and now today as a 24 year old I am left with terrible scars that I will have to spend thousands of dollars to try to treat when I have the money for it... people with clear skin don’t even realize how blessed they are. Sometimes it’s hard to even get out of bed because I feel like my youthful skin has been robbed 😞
Dear you, Plz look beyond those scars.. the world needs you.. and scars will go by their own. You are blessed for being alive, scars no scars doesnt matter
Girl, I got so many scars and acne I couldn't even recognize my own skin tone. I've started on oral antibiotics, spiro, and some topical treatment. ]From Apostrophe.] I used to wish I could die. Now that I've outgrown those woeful thoughts and come out of that deep, dark place I look after the beauty in many things. The sun, flowers, etc. I feel absolutely blessed regardless of my skins condition because there is a reasoning beyond superficial appearance. You seem so weet and like a beautiful young women. We can conquer these thoughts together!! 💪 also, I've learned some really great effective tips on calming down cystic acne if anyone here is interested.
My dermatologist prescribed this to me recently, and it worked wonders on my terribly itchy and tender acne on my chest area after a only a week of use (together with topical salicylic acid). But the nausea truly is a bummer. Thanks for the info, Dr. Dray! ❤️

I had to pass FOUR kidney stones until my doctors realized it was the acne medication causing them. The most physically painful experience of my life 😭 would 100% take acne over kidney stones any day.
I was on Monocycline, but unfortunately it didn’t work. I am now on Doxycycline and it has helped with my acne so much! I also am prescribed a Clindamycin Gel to apply topically to my face. Those two combined really help keep my acne at bay. The only time I experience acne now is around “that time of the month”, which is to be expected. Doxycycline cleared my horrible cystic acne however, it hurt my bones (yes, seriously) and made me feel so off. My doctor didn’t believe the medication could have those effects. I went off of it and magically my bones stopped aching & the other side effects disappeared. I went back on it & immediately my joints and everything ached like crazy again. I was prescribed Doxycycline over a year ago by my dermatologist but I continued to break out 2 months later so I was prescribed Minocycline and my skin cleared up after 2 months! I only took 2 months of Doxycycline and 2 months of Minocycline with Epiduo Forte as a topical cream. I still use Epiduo Forte occasionally but not everyday as I used to, only when I get a pimple which is rare now. It’s been over a year and although I sometimes get one or two pimples for the most part my skin is clear and I couldn’t be any happier. It was definitely life changing for me! I also changed my skincare routine since then and now only use Cerave cleanser and moisturizer. I also wear sunscreen everyday! 🙂🙂🙂

Just started 40mg today (adult acne). I understand now why my stomach felt a little unsettled this morning. That's a really golden nugget of information and the Benzyl Peroxide wash. I have used the cream in the past and besides drying my skin I also found if I got it on any of my clothes it bleached and ruined them. I didn't even know a BP wash was available, this sounds ideal as I can use in the shower and won't have to keep replacing my wardrobe. Thank you for the information.
I took this drug many years ago. I eventually took Acutane and I took it twice. I started having digestive problems and was diagnosed with irritable bowel which has been difficult to live with. I am convinced that the antibiotic caused my irritable bowel. I wish I had never taken the antibiotic.

My derm prescribed me doxycycline from when I was 14-19 for my acne and I only stopped because I built such an extreme bacterial resistance that I developed cystic nodular acne while still taking doxycycline. I then graduated to a round of accutane. I can definitely confirm the side effects and I am definitely living proof that it is not meant to be a long term solution lol
I've been on lymecycline then doxycycline for 3+ years on and off, no side effects. As soon as I stop treatment my acne is back within 2 weeks, but it works so well to keep down flare ups and redness. In the UK dermatologists are hard to find, I've been waiting more than 1 year for an appointment to ask for accutane. Acids like benzyl only seem to irritate my skin, even when sticking with it for 3+ months, so I'm taking my chances with the antibiotics for now. Good luck to all on their acne survival journeys. It sucks but it does not define us. And to those advocating "more water, healthier food", you are the modern day snake oil seller!

Hi. Can you tell me the dissolvable form of this antibiotic. Are you in the US? My daughter was prescribed and she has difficulties swallowing large pills.
My derm prescribed me Doxycycline after telling me that there is 50% chance it would go forever. It gives heartburn, made my skin a bit darker. HOWEVER, I'm thankful cuz it healed my cystic acne and the pimples disappeared from my shoulders and chest. My derm prescribed it for three months, I spent 2 months and she prescribed me Tretinoin yesterday.
I was given a 10 day 200mg daily dose of doxycycline for a non-skin related reason and have noticed within 5 days my mild rosacea is already clearing. It's so weird to see rosacea i've seen for years on my cheeks fading away. My skin conditions are far to mild to prescribe it for this reason but i'll enjoy the temporary results. Thank you for the explanation of a better long-term solution. You motivated me to try out a weak OTC Benzoyl Peroxide product.
I’ve taken oxytetracycline for 7 weeks now, I’ve seen major improvements in my skin not quite clear year and still have a few papules and pustules but it’s helped significantly and my skin is mostly clear from being relatively severe 7 weeks ago.
My former dermatologist had prescribed Doxy for my acne. I tried it for a month but couldn't keep it down. The worst part was that my derm's response to my struggle with the Doxy was to stop taking it and said I'd just "learn to live my acne"... no alternatives offered. Needless to say, I found a new derm, I'm now on Spironolactone and Tretinoin, and my skin has never looked better.
How are you liking spironolactone? My dr prescribed it to me but after reading the side effects I’m a little hesitant. I have started it but I’m still deciding if I will

@@sophiag612 Honestly, it has been a process so don't be discouraged. I started the Spironolactone and Tretinoin at the same time and while I didn't experience a "purge" or worsening of my acne I will say that it took 2-3 months before I looked in the mirror and was like "WOW! That's a difference!" We did increase the dose of Spironolactone and the strength of the Tret after about 8 months and that last adjustment really fixed the lingering breakouts that I was having. so it took some tweaking and patience but I tolerated both medications well and together they worked well for me.
I have been using Doxycycline off and on for years, but only use it when I get a flare up. I have Rosacea and Doxycycline helps clear up those deeply imbedded cysts. Thankfully, flare-ups are very sporadic and one prescription lasts a long, long time. So glad I have it when I need it, though.

Those who are taking this antibiotic, just be careful of side effects - I ended up developing pseudotumor cerebri (really rare). If you start to notice headaches or neck stiffness/pain, call your doctor or derm!
So informative - was prescribed antibiotics for my acne two weeks ago, and I went for a hike last weekend. This week I noticed my face was much darker - and was wondering why! My derm didn't even mention this.
I was prescribed doxycycline for my acne by a GP, but it didn't work. I think it was because I dont have the red-cystic type of acne, I have comedonal acne. However, doxycycline worked great for my friend, so it really does depend on the type of acne!

Perfect timing! I've booked in to see a dermatologist in two weeks because I've had moderate acne for over 10 years. I was actually prescribed accutane four years ago, but I could only get through about one and a half months worth of medication, because it elevated my liver enzyme levels too much. I was so sad having to quit it just after the worst purging. Because I'm 24 now I was thinking of discussing the possibility of me using adapalene gel or other topical retinoid to control my acne but also to help with anti-aging. Maybe something like doxycycline could also be helpful in the beginning of starting a retinoid? I remember trying one antibiotic (I don't remember whether it was doxycycline or the other) before going on accutane over four years ago, but it didn't really do much at the time. Hi dr dray. I was prescribed doxycycline for 3 months 100mg per day. I recently finished my 2nd month. I didn’t continue to the 3rd bottle bc I started getting extremely bad headaches. I am unsure it is related to the antibiotic but I am thinking it is bc my headaches felt like I just had constant tension on my head and I’ve never had this. I am going to contact my dermatologist but I am just curious if you ever have heard patients dealing with this.
Can’t believe I missed this video!I’ve been waiting for this since I first stumbled across your account ♥️ Thank you Dr Dray for sharing your knowledge with us. Happy Friday🌞
I started off with this antibiotic and tretinoin and the antibiotic did give me heart burn as do most strong antibiotics. I was only on it for about 4 months and then I stayed using on the retinol for my acne. My skin has been doing amazing but lately I’ve been getting the white heads in weird places I don’t normally get them but I’m hoping that it was from something I used and that I’m not becoming immune or irritated by the retinol. Thanks for the video Dr Drey.!🥰😻❤️
During a deployment, we were all required to take doxy proactively against malaria. Many didn't care for the GI upsets, but we all like the way our skin looked. 😁

Before Accutane I took Doxycycline two times. The first time I took it my face was perfectly clear but in 7 days after last dose my face was worse than ever. I felt like everything below my skin was captured and after Doxycycline exploded on the surface of my skin. After the second time I used Doxycycline it was even worse. I couldn't recognize myself.
Exactly the same for me!
hellooo i have a question… when should I cleanse and moisturize?? i know in the morning… before applying my medication… but then also in the evening no? without adding the medication?
Yes Doctor, please do a video on Minocycline alone. I took it for almost 2 months and couldn't finish it because it tore up my stomach so bad...

What side effects are you experiencing?
Did the accutane work?
For how long your accutane course was? Mine also came back after 5 month of stopping treatment
I thought same - anti botic resistance was my first thought
For 4 years of my 12+ years acne survival journey, I was on doxycycline. It eventually turned resistant to p.acnes for me and it is probably the root cause for my current state of advanced gastro intestinal disease. Doxycycline works but not for long

I was prescribed doxycycline for my acne by a GP, but it didn't work. I think it was because I dont have the red-cystic type of acne, I have comedonal acne. However, doxycycline worked great for my friend, so it really does depend on the type of acne!

hai how's ur update? Im on my third week on doxy, my cheeks chin and forehead is doing fine like before the medicine, but somehow i got severe breakout around jawline & neck. Its so scary having breakout on neck. Consider to doing the blood test for hormonal imbalence 😩 tired af
Did u get the acne back?
How has your skin been now?
U dead?
I was on doxycycline for 1 year when I was in college, it helped initially but eventually it stopped and my acne came back. Then I went on spironolactone which helped a ton!! Eventually I stopped that too and my acne is now completely gone a few years later. I always say stress from college made me break out lol.
wow i took doxi for 3 months along with clindamyacin. My acne came back worse soon after in places I never had before. So i have spirnalactone and tretinoin now and I am experiencing the worst purge.
Hai did u do the blood test before consume spironolactone?
@@NYS30 nope.
You mentioned doxy just preparing for long term solutions? Are you talking about accutane or topicals for the long term or something else? Thanks, very informative video.
thanks for this I was on this medication for a month but got better results with topical tretinoin
happy Friday !
You're so welcome! Happy Friday!
Happy Friday enjoy 😉
May I ask how long it took for tretinoin to clear your skin?

Did you use prebiotics with it ?
I'm really hoping this time to finally get control of my acne, I'm so tired of always being very self concious about it as I also work in the beauty industry.
Ask Brian Turner from banish
benzoyl peroxide really helps
Good morning Dr Dray! Important topic so thank you!
Morning!
Was prescribed spironolactone and doxycycline twice a day. Threw up the second day when I woke up.
OMG IM A TEEN AND I WAS PRESCRIBED THIS A MONTH AGO!!!!! I use this with adapelene gel
me too! benzoyl peroxide with adapelene gel.
How did it work for you? Did your acne go away?
@@jackieortiz316it cleared the acne on my back, but only cleared a little bit of acne on my face. I eventually went on Accutane and my skin completely cleared.
Oral antibiotics
Use no longer than 3-4 months
But usually only 6-8 weeks (1.5-2 months)
Acne come back once one stops taking the drug.
My derma prescribed this to me today for my cystic acne, thanks so much for sharing this info!

SS Haru how long u been on doxy babe until u saw improvement too ur skin? My derm prescribed me for two months hopefully will get better sooner
@@NYS30 I forgot how many days it was, but it was about a month if I remember it right. Mainly because the Doxy (Doxin) is expensive here in the Philippines so I wasn't able to really intake it straight, I had to stop for a couple of days to save up for it then buy it again. :(

I’ve been on both doxycycline and minocycline off and on for 10 years. The max length of time if been prescribed doxycycline is about 18 months. Is there a big risk to being on it that long? I have had better success with doxycycline than minocycline. Using that combined with low dose Spironolactone (50mg), .25 Tretinoin, and Tri-luma have helped so much. Also, I stopped using biotin, which really helped with stopping body acne.
Thank you so much for all your videos. I learn so much from you!!
Did it work for you? I’m literally on the same treatment 50 mg spiro and Tret but only on doxycycline for a month.
@@dalilacastro2892 yes, it has helped. The Spironolactone seems to make the biggest difference, followed by the doxycycline. The tretinoin seems to help more with scarring and discoloration from acne.
doxycycline made me SO sick i would throw up every time i ate on it and when i stopped using it my acne got way worse
omg same i stopped it for quite a months but my doc put it on again.. now its working (idk why)
I'm one of the patients who had nasty side effects from Doxycycline. I was prescribed it twice from my primary doc & OB doc for other reasons over the years. Both times I vomited. Not only that, it caused eye flashes & floaters. The floaters are now permanent in my eyes. Please be extra caution when taking this antibiotics.
Hey this happened to me too after taking antibiotics
Just was prescribed this yesterday and of course had to see what Dr. Dray thinks! 🙌🏻
Ah yep vomiting, that was me 😂 I always took it with a full meal after that.
Yup lmao didn't do it once and i felt like shit
same omg
What about if u took it in the morning?
I was literally thinking about this yesterday 😭😭
Can you please do a video on Azithromycin for acne 🤔
Can IBS ( irritable bowel syndrome) patients have these antibiotics?
Omg my dermatologist prescribed this to me like a 2 weeks ago, perfect timing. It really helped me with my inflation, but now I only have closed comedones, so I have to go and change my prescription.

Doxy was amazing for my skin, but not for my digestive track. I used to wake up in the middle of the night with bile sitting in my throat. It made my GERD even worse and let’s just say I now am Gluten free because of this pill. There was several times I couldn’t leave home when taking this pill because I needed to be next to a toilet (use your own imagination). I’m not sure if everyone experiences these side effects but be mindful if you have GERD or suffer from heartburn I wouldn’t take it. Not going to lie though, it did clear up my face and back within a month of taking it. Almost makes the cons non existent 😂
Can you tell me doxycyclin to do it twice in the same day? and is harmonal acne is removed for using doxy..... my dermatolist prescribed vibramycin salt of doxycyclin i use previos year 2 months but not recover acne ............................. plz plz i am full stressed about that plz guide me
Did your acne return after you stopped taking it?
@@elenam7174 Yes, but not to the full extent that it used to be, only a few cysts here and there. Mostly on my back but sometimes under my jaw. For me, doxycycline didn't work for my hormonal acne. It worked in my teenage years but didn't for my adult acne.
Also, I got prone to yeast infections and it took a long time to become immune to yeast again. It kills the good bacteria. I started Accutane after doxi and my acne hasn't appeared after 5 years.
This is my game plan also. Will start Accutane in a few months also as I have no faith that my acne won't come back after Doxy.
Ive heard accutane can cause birth defects is this true
@@jordangriffanti3780 yes, very true
Just mash up ginger, garlic, drop of Apple cider vinegar, maunka honey, a dash of turmeric in a some water and drink daily. That will reduce your inflammation.
I was just prescribed this And this video was posted on my birthday

thank you so much for making this video!!
I’m so glad you posted about this I beg my dermatologist to give me Accutane but she says my acne is not severe enough but I’m 43 and I’m tired of getting acne under my nose seems like every time I take doxycycline on an empty stomach I throw up have you heard of that before?. Sorry You just answered my question
You should take it only after eating
@DrDray, please do a video on Minocycline. I have moderate acne and my dermatologist has prescribed minocycline as an antibiotic for my acne. I really want to know about this antibiotic :)
My doctor offered Doxycycline for 14 days, i hope my face heal as soon as possible🥺

@@NYS30 Sorry to hear about your breakouts. I had doxycycline for 4 months and it worked well for me. The scars are 90 percent gone. Also, those big painful acne got recovered. My skin is in a better place now.
Hey I'm also from Nepal. What's the name of the med you're prescribed with and in how many mg's?
I’m on my 6th pill (6th day) and i’ve seen tremendous progress, specifically on my chest area, almost 99% cleared up after 4 days. Started doxycycline because of a bad bad back acne breakout all of a sudden, woke up one day with a severe bacne breakout, took doxycycline and now on the 6th day, i’ve seen good progress, especially on the redness and the amount of pimples. Still got 9 pills to go. I’m also taking it with a spray called acniben by isdin, which also is super beneficial after a shower, which also helped dry up the pores
That’s a side effect of the antibiotic.
Thanks for the video Dr Drey.!🥰😻❤️
did you stop taking doxycycline when you experienced heartburn ?
Is your skin clear now ?
I take this medicine this week
Question what would be considered a long term treatment after the antibiotic? Keeping in mind I also am doing the topical benzoyl peroxide
