  • Hundreds of mourners gathered at an historic central London church for the funeral of one of the last black RAF Second World War veterans.
Flight Sergeant Peter Brown, who flew five operations in Lancaster bombers in early 1945, died alone, aged 96, at his home in Maida Vale, west London, in December last year.

An Air Marshal turning up to the funeral of an air gunner who never even flew over enemy territory - an insult to my late gather's generation. We like in a world of Wokes, where history is being re-written. If you look at the online records for No 635 Squadron, he didn't fly until 15th May 1945 - the War in Europe famously ended seven days earlier on 8th May 1945.

My farther was a radio operator air gunner on Lancasters at the height of the war he Flew 31 ops over Germany and France shot up by night fighters over Berlin on three engines with no undercarriage they landed south of London and had to make there way back to Lincolnshire. That was just one op he went to Berlin eight times the most heavily defended city. He was offered a commission but he couldn’t afford the uniform and mess bills because he was married and had a small child he Volunteered for the RAF when he was 17 and working down the pit learning to be an electrician. The RAF asked him to stay on but he had had enough after six years he finished his career as a warrant office. The undertaker at his funeral asked me if we would like the union flag on his coffin I said I would but he forgot to put it on. No RAF funeral for dad or most of the 55,000 bomber crew personnel who died in the war.

All Lancaster crews were brave men, this hero being one of them. My dad was injured serving in the RAF, was treated in Brussels hospital in 1945, and reentered a hospital twenty years later to have leftover shrapnel removed. Yet nobody from the RAF turned up for his funeral, never mind Force's News. Why is that?

Sorry, but I don't see what 'black' has to do with the report. The real news is that this 96 year old veteran died alone in the middle of the largest and most diverse city in the UK.....that's the real scandal! Sadly many veterans meet a similar fate, regardless of the colour of their skin, because this country no longer values their service! Great turn out to mark the passing of a warrior from a generation that understood the meaning sacrifice, something we seem to have forgotten amongst the race bating politics of this modern era. God bless you Peter Brown, in your death you have reminded us of what's really important, 'the content of one's character, not the colour of one's skin' (Martin Luther King).

In my reading of history and our commonwealth, while there were some major inequalities (not always around race either), we were much less race conscious then than now. I’m not saying Peter brown would objected to a big send off by the raf celebrating black people and their enormous sacrifice in world war 2, but the fact that this has snowballed from a nice meaning gesture by the council and the raf, looks to me like nobody had control and stopped to ask themselves what was appropriate and what was too far.
