This means that protagonists could be either good, evil, or neutral with the antagonists just opposing the protagonists. In this case, Light is still the protagonist of the show and L is the main antagonist.

This final scene puts a period on the issue of wether Light was genuine about justice. He was saddistically enjoying having played this innocent woman, he was gloating while she was walking towards her death because he could beat her. He's apsycopath on a power trip.
I'm not sure if he enjoyed the whole process. He was just elated that we won. If you think of it from his perspective, he just came up the most clutch he's ever been in the biggest moment of his life.

As for him taunting her. I think he just taunts her because he feels like he outsmarted her and keep in mind she is basically an adversary to him at this point.
What I'm saying is that if she wasn't working on this he actually would have likely had a lot of respect for her and gotten along well with her.

Because from his perspective he's doing the right thing. So anything trying to interfere with that is essentially commuting a crime.
even though she's only in the show for a few episodes, naomi is one of my favorite characters... she had so much potential, she was so intelligent and had a great revenge motive after raye died. i think she easily could've outsmarted light along with L if she'd been on the task force. her death is so tragic, especially the way it's portrayed at the end. this is the moment where i started to officially root for light's downfall and was excited to see how he would eventually get caught

Being the only loose bullet which L and Light weren't aware means it would've open up a lot more storytelling opportunities.
Thats true, but this was such an amazing episode and her death scene is one of my best in the whole series, so I would not sacrifice it just for her to continue in the series for the sake of potential plot.
That's why her death was the catalyst for L started suspecting Light.
Not really. If she gets away here and meets L, Light loses. Even ignoring her meeting Light, the information she has pretty much implicates Light. Him interacting with her beforehand would only seal the deal. Light would lose if she meets L.
I love that y’all felt bad in this episode. It’s sick how much he manipulated her to her death, and in her final moments made her feel the weakest she’s ever felt.

Brilliant and fully capable of taking down Kira, especially alongside L. I imagine she would've dedicated the rest of her life to fighting crime with him.
i honestly think this might be my favourite episode of the series. even though there are some with much more complex scheming, I just love how this one was done. the pacing, the tension buildup, the switching between which character you're rooting for, and the point where it really hits you for the first time that light is a psychopathic villain. it also helps that I really liked naomi and my heart just SUNK when she made that face at the end
The direction was at its best in this along with 2-3 later eps.

Naomi is probably my favorite character because she's one of, if not the only, investigator that had a personal grudge against Kira. Her intelligence is probably on par with Light and L, but she was too naive and let her guard down at the worst moment. I think this show would've ended a lot sooner if she had joined the task force.
You cut it out for the vid, but just after Light starts convincing her to show her ID, Ryuk starts laughing manically because he can see her date of death change with his eyes before her name is even written
They see their normal lifespan. They only change he sees is as time goes by or if they do the deal. Actions people take don't affect the time shinigami sees
This episode was definitely the turning point for me. So intense.
Before this moment I just saw Light as the antihero of his own story. Up until this point, the only innocent person he killed was Penber. But then he pulled this twisted sick shit and this solidified him as the Villain.

Conversely, it would be really difficult to stay hidden as Kira in the digital age. Just as Kira would have access to modern technology, so would L or the people trying to catch Kira.

This episode exemplifies what I loved about this show. The thrill of watching Light pull off a crazy scheme mixes with the utter dread of watching innocent people suffer because of it.
If y'all liked Naomi, there's a little spin off novel called The Murder Cases of BB with her as the main character working with L. I really enjoyed it when I was younger.

That's why this anime is such a genius' work because it makes the villain the protagonist who, deliberately, is likeable in many scenes, and sometimes we the viewers can't stop ourselves from rooting for him not to get caught, but when we see the victims of our rooting for him, we realize we are just as guilty as him, and we feel such a dark remorse while watching it, this is awesome.

this is the episode i truly started loving light, he handled her soo well, it was truly beautiful to watch, i couldn't contain my exitement and happiness watching it for the first time as it happened. Watching this scene always gives me chills and makes me realise how badly i want light to win.

A far as I remember, I think this was the turning point for me. In the very beginning I supported Light’s ideology 100%, but eventually, seeing how he was killing even innocent people (like those detectives), just for being in his way, made me start questioning everything. The next episodes after that made me lose faith in him little by little, specially seeing how much he enjoyed doing all this and causing death. And this episode killing poor Naomi is what did it for me. Such a sad episode. She had so much going for her, I’m still mad they killed her off so early in the anime. Up until now I was still holding on some faith for Light to turn around and get better or maybe hoping for the ends to justify the means, but it doesn’t. This is where I went from admiring to hating Kira. But for me it was even worse with something that happens later on, bur I won’t spoil.
I struggle a lot with accepting his ideology in full (yes, in theory what he is doing is understandable), because the moment he started on this path there would naturally be innocent, good people that would oppose him. It would only make sense that he would take those people out if they got close to exposing him.
I think it just shakes us when we see first hand here what he's willing to do to get rid of someone in his way, even if they didn't do anything wrong. But in a deep level we all had to have known this was coming.
the thing is that most people dont love kira, but you will respect at some degree.
I still get the chills when light's watch ticked on time for Naomi, music started playing, she moving to her death instead and light saying "goodbye Naomi" with the first snow falling, it's all so sad but it shows how light is just a genius and manipulative person too

Since you guys are watching Death Note, I highly recommend Parasyte. It's made by the same studio and has 1 season but it one of the best anime ever.

yeah but at this point none of them are likably. Even L is not likable since we don't know anything about him at this point. Doesnt mean the show is bad, you can dislike characters and still love the show.

i agree with the reply above me saying that light is a villain while the other two are anti-heroes. i think if we're talking about a technical perspective, then while all of them are very well-written interesting characters, imo eren is the best one, also considering how connected i feel to him despite the things he's done. now, it should be noted i only watched the first season of lelouch of the rebellion but if we're talking about which one is the best one as a person, it'd be lelouch, since he's the only one here who didn't inflict harm on innocent people deliberately, i also think his purpose is a nice one too. and light just horrifies me.

as another representative of the said community, i'd also like to confirm that indeed, i like L a lot. he is my favorite character in death note but also separated from that i genuinely like him haha. i also see many people who like him a lot too, he's pretty popular.
@@cannonandrus5554 Well, it's gonna be a bit difficult to answer that question without spoiling the show (i dunno to what extent you've already seen it), but i'll try my best. Basically my friend said "he's nice, mysterious, very unique, seems lonely, that you have an instant desire to give him a hug. besides that, he's sure has a charisma, you want to follow him, know what's he's thinking about, and some of the moments with him truly touch your heart". As for me, in contrast with Light, L is a far more likable person. I'd never stay in one room with Light, but I'd trust L with my life. Of course he's not one of these anime guys "girls typically go crazy about" like Gojo or Levi, but he's surely an interesting person and there are a lot of people who like him just as a character who's entertaining to watch or like a guy they would like to meet as a real person.
That scene still makes me feel awful all these years later and it's an animation 😮💨

Her fatal flaw was her desire to be a detective again. From what we're shown, it's implied that she was convinced by Raye to retire from the FBI, but ended up regretting the decision. You can see all of her apprehensiveness and precautions go away the moment Light starts talking about how he wants her to be an investigator; she could and would have easily escaped him if he didn't get lucky and attack her fatal flaw. And it's not exactly anti-plot armor like you're implying because her fatal flaw was built up from the first moment we saw her.

This is that point in the story where Light officially crossed the line to me and there was no coming back from it. Maybe its wrong to say that considering he has already done so much by this point, but this was just cruel and unforgivable. The show makes it clear our protagonist is indeed the villain of the story and it was all his own choice.
I knew when he killed Raye Penber. That he won't shy from killing innocents.
Before this he was only killing criminals (even though that itself is very questionable, having a single person be the arbiter of anyone's judgement). But this is his second killing of an innocent person, the first being Ray.
It's even hard to justify him just "tying up loose ends" to not be caught, since not being caught is understandable given his situation. But he actively taunts her; he revels that he "won" this battle with an innocent person just because they got close to the truth. It shows his true colors- vanity, humongous god complex, and shows that nobody is truly safe in his "new world" because he won't hesitate to kill anyone who just simply opposes him or will expose him.

What I really loved about Death Note was how the story tackled the characters. So many of them feel really important, so when they die just in 2-3 episodes it catches you off guard. Both Raye Penber and Naomi gave me that vibe. Their character felt so important that I was ready for them to be the ones taking down Light lol.

Okay I’m back and I think I know why my comment is disappearing so let’s try this again : as I previously failed to say… this episode was so evil that I awkwardly loved it and felt heartbroken at the same time. The way it ended left me stunned.
Also, Cannon, I agree, the show is great but the way you feel about the characters is relatable…
It’s the last time I mention it - I PROMISE!! 😭 But the moment you said you struggled with the characters, I felt like you would genuinely enjoy the way Light is written in the 2015 japanese drama a bit more (can’t write the name of the website I think but you definitely can find it in sub since it used to be on crunchy roll.) Because here is the biggest difference I have spotted so far : in the anime, from episode 1, Light is immediately introduced to us as arrogant and has accepted the Death Note too quickly to nurture his God complex-which it may be part of the reasons why it’s hard for you to feel any kind of connection (not a "relatable" connection, but more like one of interest ?) with him, or any of the characters, from the get go. Just like Jackson said : he doesn’t give us whatever we need to see to make us feel for him even the tiniest bit, as a protagonist. In the drama, Light’s character has a lot more depth for the way his internal conflicts and his backstory are written, the process of his innocent self turning into the Kira from the anime is insane. You are not supposed to like him or route for him afterwards, but it made the storytelling of his downfall fascinating. Plus, the actor casted as L is one of my favorite japanese actors (he is also the main character from Alice In Borderland on Netflix)
So yeah everyone talks about the monstruosity that is the Netflix adaptation of this anime, but no one talks about the amazing piece of work from Japan and I can’t be the only westerner here who have watched it and is ridiculously passionate about it!

Yep, there's not a whole lot of character development going on that helps you attach to characters in this anime. It's all mainly the intriguing plot and mind battles that the characters have going on.
Pretty much every character we've seen so far has themselves established before they were introduced to us.
