He's just a hypocrite. If he thinks Kira/Light is wrong, then him attempting to kill Light (and didn't succeed only because someone else stopped him) makes him just as bad, if not worse. Kira kills to try to make the world a better place. Matsuda wanted to kill just out of emotions and to take revenge so to speak

For me the most satisfying thing about the ending is that it is Matsuda who shoots Light. He always believed in Light and was the least distrustful, but in the end he didn't even hestitate to shoot him. Lights betrayel hits him the hardest and it shows.

What I love about the ending is that it shows where Light's priorities REALLY lie. While he does care about punishing evil-doers, what drives him the most is outsmarting people and making sure that they know it. Time and time again, he has shown that every time he outsmarted anyone, he always wants to gloat in front of them. He did it with Naomi Misora, Ray Penber, L, and Near. He told Naomi Misora he was Kira a second before the Death Note's will took over her. He couldn't help but do the same to Near and the rest. He wants to gloat before the Death Note takes over. The moment L challenged Light in episode 2, showing people how smart he is was at the forefront of his mind. He's extremely similar to Walter White. While Walter White says that he does what he does for his family. All Walter really cared about was that he was the best at his job and no one can rival him. He couldn't even let Hank think that Gale Boetticher was Heisenberg. Hank thinking someone else was Heisenberg meant that all the credit won't be Walter's.

I'm not sure how many details about the Kira case were actually revealed to the public, so I don't think Light's death is really known outside of the people who knew him or kept up with him. Light’s only and biggest mistake was his ego. Him wanting people to know that he, Kira, existed, was the selfish thing that became his downfall. True selflessness is doing good, without seeking glory or recognition for your work, like a superhero working from the shadows, or blending with the public when not on duty. But doing good is not saving people from burning houses, traffic accidents, or busting criminals, it’s securing human rights, basic needs, and equality, why I love infrastructure so much, especially transportation. Cause even if political power changes, infrastructure stays, and benefits the public in the long term, especially roads and bicycle paths, which don’t require people getting paid to run busses or trains on the infrastructure, at fixed times, at fixed prices, and fixed speeds.
The manga ending was much darker than the animes. In the manga, ryuk remained in the warehouse and said he would write lights name in his death note. Light cried and begged ryuk not to write his name, light even went as far to say i dont want to die, im afraid to die. I think ryuk just laughed at how pathetic light was in that moment and wrote his name down soon after.
It's even better that Ryuk kinda does it on principle. Light begs him to write the names of Near and all the others, and Ryuk basically goes "You're leaning on me? Yeah, you're done." And writes his name, and proceeds to show it to him.
at the end when light was running injured he actually passed by the “innocent” version of himself at 54:40 it’s such a great detail and parallel death note is unmatched

I think the best part is how Light thought he was a god above all human with Death Note, but in the end he died by Ryuk's hand. He was put into place that he was just another human.
Y'know, after seeing this series with y'all after all this time makes me realize that L dying (while disappointing) was perfect. Same with Near/Mello getting their thing going. If L had 2 lives, he'd have caught Kira ages ago. Mello understood this and used his life as the "expendable" one knowing that Near would be able to use the opening that his death made to finally capture and put Light away forever, or just straight up kill him. Gud ending, still miss L though.
Yes, and i think it shows that L left a legacy, the people he left behind. Because at the end of the day, the people who are pursuing justice will always exist, so L might've lost the battle but won the war in a sense imo. I've always thought L's death was the right idea too, it adds so much more dimension and emotional moments to the story, but also shows that so long as you're pursuing the right thing, there will always be those who come after you. What Light wanted could only last this much and at the end, it ended with his death. But that's just my opinion of course.😅
Yeah, I love Mello for that. Shows how passionate he is to catch Kira that he's willing to let his arrogance and bitterness go. He's so smart, he must've known this would potentially get him killed sooner or later. And he did it anyway coz if he can't get Light to do what he wants, Near will.
I have to agree with Carter on this one. L winning would have just meant a more stretched out version of what was already happening in the show. The fact that Light beat him allowed for the plot to shift dramatically in a way that could never happen if it was just more Light vs L. We only really got to see the world that Kira was gonna create because of L's death and we got to see a lot of interesting scenarios because of that.
This and the fact that Light kills L and then Near and Mello basically getting revenge for L and Light dying in the end. It just wraps up the story neatly because lets face it... in the end Light started to stray from his original ideals and became more evil... he didnt deserve to live... his ideals and message already shaped the world... his work is done.. he can die now.
This is true, but it wasn’t handled super well imo. Killing L wasn’t a bad decision, but they jammed too much into a few episodes when really they needed at least 15-20 more episodes to establish the new cast properly.
Jackson made a very good point about not caring that much about Near and Mello. The problem is that for some reason anime rushed the second part of the story, after L's death, making it almost impossible to begin caring about either Mello or Near. There's also that infamous scene with Near looking at the screens and magically guessing that Mikami is the X-Kira, which looked completely different in the manga where his deduction was described in detail. Cuts like that were incredibly common in the last eleven episodes. Because of all of this, their win feels kind of undeserved in anime.
they probably had to rush it, and i always hated that about anime. so many anime get rushed its not even funny, cuz many of them have so much potential they miss out on

Takada was so underutilized. Maybe if the second arc wasn’t so rushed these new characters could have had more spotlight. Unfortunate because this portion of the series gets shat on a lot but everything would’ve been resolved with better pacing.

Well that was an unexpected treat; just as this arc was unexpectedly good, and I still can’t believe it is so underrated. When I first discovered Death Note, from the first episode I immediately called that it was not going to end well for Light; because it was that kind of story that made it obvious from the beginning, but it did an amazing job to mislead and trick us so many times. There's no doubt Light is one of the best main characters ever written, as horrendous as he is. His psychology was really on point, the narrative didn't even miss on the realism of his response to his incapacity to escape like he used to. How ironic it is to see him so terrified by his own ability to break, his own mortality, when all this time he felt himself above every living thing and even death itself. It was just one of the most satisfying end of a show. And the way you were all at the edge of your seat ?? Excuse-me… I couldn't help but think of the upcoming fall, when the last part of AOT's finale will finally get here haha Thank you for this moment, it's currently 1am and I should be already asleep, but I don't regret it 😅🖤

58:10 He hit bull's eye with the name though. He already wrote Nate with the pin before getting shot, then was about to write River with blood before being hit by the Matsuda barrage. As Nate pointed out during the 30 minute stalling, there was a good chance Light knew the name and face of the SPK people, no it was a quick impulsive judgement by him that the first name written was Near's, the first person that Mikami had to kill as Near showed Light the 'evidence'.
It was so satisfying to see Light lose all his cool when he was beat. Seeing how pathetic he acts when he knows he is beat shows his true nature. I also love that line from Near when he says that him and Mello working separately cant even touch L, but when they work together they can stand with him. An amazing finale all in all.
I had a heart attack when I saw this massive binge lol ❤ Brig becoming Mello's biggest fan is peak character development. And oh guys, post Death Note depression will hit soon
if you guys will watch death note ova, you’ll learn that ryuk meets a new shinigami in shinigami world who looks and walks exactly like light. So the theory is maybe those who use death note and die when shinigami kills them, they become shinigami themselves. This explains what ryuk told light that those who use death note will neither go to heaven or hell.
58:10 When Light pulls out his watch he is actual writing down Near's real name Nate River. When Mikami writes down the names in the fake notebook he is able to see Near's real name which is why Light knows Near's real name when he writes in the paper.

Definitely love the ending and I understand a big part of Lights undoing is basically his pride/thinking he can't be beat, but it does bother me that he could have literally just asked Mikami to test the notebook on the way to the location and make sure its the real one, just in case they somehow managed to get their hands on it to prevent his undoing Legendary series all the same. Great stuff from the manga gets cut out as well, highly recommend reading it after watching the show to anyone who hasnt yet !
The arrogance of light made him lose. He disrespected near and mellow ability to catch him. He essentially said "If it were L, he would've expected my plan".

Damn was not expecting 8 eps together, you guys are real ones for that. And as sad as it is the Deathnote reactions have come to an end, it was really great to rewatch it with you guys. It was my first ever anime and I was another anime hater too lol. Light may have been psychopath but you cannot deny that he is a brilliant character. Till the very end you can't help but think he actually just might win. Him and L are definitely on the list of goated anime characters, atleast to me.
Thanks for the reaction guys. Also, in the manga before Ryuk wrote Light's name, Light deduced that Heaven and Hell didn't exist at all in the Death Note universe. That's why the last "rule panel" is "All humans go to nothingness". which makes Light's last moments even more sadder.
I remember when saw the last episode and never forget it cuz it truly broke my heart so much 💔 when everything came to end for light and the way he was so alone at the end, everything about the last episode was so hard for me to handle i was so depressed back then that i couldn't bring myself to move on for a month and i cried so much 💔 it was just so hard for me as a Light fan 💔 and i hated to watch him lose and get killed like that he was a lonely hero a hero no one wants 💔
I can recommend reading the Manga "Short Stories" where its shown what happened with the Death Note before AND after Light (what the author just published 3 years ago). Actually there are more then just 2 stories and each of them were also published in different years (I think the pre-Light story was like from 2008 or earlier) very interesting stories Especially the latest one really gave me that feeling of the anime itself, like one (or more) bonus episodes but still with the same tense

I'm here to heavily recommend that you guys watch Golden Kamuy at some point! it's like... the actual best anime to watch with a group of friends. it's got a really great plot with a lot of hype in it, and stellar characters, but it's also hilarious, and completely insane. you may already have something lined up, but I'm hoping someday it could make it onto your list!

If you are looking for action and crazy explosions etc. Go watch something else. It's kinda like a biopic but with Christoper Nolans non linear storytelling. I personally didn't really feel the 3 hour runtime. 2 hours and 45mins passed before I even thought about what time it was lol
Did not expect an 8 episode finale upload. But here we are. Love this show. But I do have a little problem with the finale. I've always found Near's plan to be really foolish for someone who was propped up to be someone so smart. As we know, Near's plan worked because Mikami made a miscalculation and did the same move that Light did, even when he was instructed not to do anything unnecessary or out of his normal pattern. Near succeeded out of luck. Especially when you remember that Near had ALREADY set the plan in place before he discovered Mikami had another notebook(we see him having an inner monologue about knowing what Light's plan is at the beginning of episode 35 but he finds out about the fake notebook at the end of the episode due to Mikami slipping up). So all of Light's monologue in the previous episode about how Near had fallen for such a simple game of bait and switch come off less as him being super cocky and moreso Near just also being oddly overconfident. He was so sure that he could literally risk everyone's lives and didn't even consider the possibility of a fake notebook being used until the stuff with Mikami. Imagine if Mikami hadn't taken that single misstep. Near gives that huge speech about how none of them are going to die. And then they did. It's not even like Light was taken out by his own shortcomings. Near just put all of his eggs in one basket and then managed to catch them before they hit the ground out of luck. Anyway, that very naive plan aside, let's get into some analysis. I actually really liked Light as a Protagonist. He's just so unique in how far he's willing to go for his goals. He's willing to do dark things for his ambition without regret. But we also see moments where Light expresses his humanity. Like when he lost his memories for episodes 17-23. Or when he put aside the mission(symbolized by him dropping the pen) when his father died. The Light that cared for others was lost piece by piece until only Kira remained. In both a metaphorical and physical way, Light was a victim to the Death Note as well. And in his final moments, he saw who he was before all of this. Before he picked up the notebook. Millions of people were impacted by Kira, but he went out as Light Yagami. Fitting that we end on a shot of the Moon as that's another way his name can be read.
I agree that Nears plan is pretty naive, but the way I think about it is that Near is a very straightforward and logical thinker, so something tricky or out of the box like a fake notebook wouldn't naturally come to mind for him. Unlike L, who was very creative, risky and tricky with his plans, would think of that possibility since it's something he'd maybe think of himself.
When I first watched Death Note I disliked the ending mainly because I didn't like Near from the start and also he lucked out. Now although I think it's better that Kira loses, what I still dislike about the ending is that it was literally impossible to recreate an entire notebook in such a short time. There were 10s of thousands of names there which would take a long time just to copy these names but remember Mikami analysed the notebook under a microscope. Furthermore it's Japanese so there are thousands of kanji characters that need to be recreated alomost perfectly for thousands of names. The fact that Near lucked out is also a bit dissatisfying but I like to justify it that way, that at pretty much anything, when you reach the skill ceiling it is luck that decides weather you succeed or not. At some point you do everything you can do but nobody is perfect so everyone messes up sometimes and it's a matter of chance (as if it can't really be predicted) when someone messes up and what are the consequences of that. Now while I was writing this I reminded myself of a quote from Attack on Titan said by Levi, that whatever decision you take the result is always a mistery. I found it kinda surprising that e.g. Mikami didn't test the notebook with some random person a few minutes before arriving at the scene. But since Kira and Near decided to meet up and end it once and for all, it made it end up a game of "I know that you know that I know..." and whoever stopped first was a matter of chance at this point and Mellow happened to influence it. I never noticed the symbol of Light dropping the pen when his father dies so thanks for pointing that out. But it is nice that Light died in the middle of the stairs, symbolizing the rule of the Death Note that its users go to neither heaven or hell. I saw some theories he went to the Shinigami realm.
Yeah, Near's plan was supposed to fail. That was the point. Near by himself was no match for Light. Which is why Near came to the realization at the end that it took both him and Mello working together to stand side by side with L.
Totally agree your comment about Near/Near's plan. So many people say Light was beaten by Near (and Mello), or Light made mistakes, but the truth is Mikami made mistake, and Light in a way was beaten by Mikami for not following instruction, nothing else.
"Humans tend to make mistakes just when they are about to succeed." It's a quote from one of "next episode preview" in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. There was always a voice-over after each episode where non-character voice throws some wisdom. I always thought the quote exactly fits here for Yagami Light thus I have never forgetten the quote.
But Light didn't make mistake, it was Near who made a mistake but "recovered" due to luck. It was Mikami who made mistake by not following Light's instruction

the deathnote is what turned him into a psychopath. it appeared before him by chance alone. i love his character it’s brilliant writing but he’s done some fucked up stuff, but in the end he did still stop global crime rate by 70% which would have been 90%+ if he didn’t die so early. are the deaths of a few innocents really more valuable than a massive percentage of crime drops globally? i guess that’s what it boils down to, whether you think Light had good intentions but with the ends justifying the means or whether you think he is just evil.

The manga ending was much darker than the animes. In the manga, ryuk remained in the warehouse and said he would write lights name in his death note. Light cried and begged ryuk not to write his name, light even went as far to say i dont want to die, im afraid to die. I think ryuk just laughed at how pathetic light was in that moment and wrote his name down soon after.

It's even better that Ryuk kinda does it on principle. Light begs him to write the names of Near and all the others, and Ryuk basically goes "You're leaning on me? Yeah, you're done." And writes his name, and proceeds to show it to him.

I think the best part is how Light thought he was a god above all human with Death Note, but in the end he died by Ryuk's hand. He was put into place that he was just another human.
Y'know, after seeing this series with y'all after all this time makes me realize that L dying (while disappointing) was perfect. Same with Near/Mello getting their thing going. If L had 2 lives, he'd have caught Kira ages ago. Mello understood this and used his life as the "expendable" one knowing that Near would be able to use the opening that his death made to finally capture and put Light away forever, or just straight up kill him. Gud ending, still miss L though.
Yes, and i think it shows that L left a legacy, the people he left behind. Because at the end of the day, the people who are pursuing justice will always exist, so L might've lost the battle but won the war in a sense imo. I've always thought L's death was the right idea too, it adds so much more dimension and emotional moments to the story, but also shows that so long as you're pursuing the right thing, there will always be those who come after you. What Light wanted could only last this much and at the end, it ended with his death. But that's just my opinion of course.😅
Yeah, I love Mello for that. Shows how passionate he is to catch Kira that he's willing to let his arrogance and bitterness go. He's so smart, he must've known this would potentially get him killed sooner or later. And he did it anyway coz if he can't get Light to do what he wants, Near will.
I have to agree with Carter on this one. L winning would have just meant a more stretched out version of what was already happening in the show. The fact that Light beat him allowed for the plot to shift dramatically in a way that could never happen if it was just more Light vs L. We only really got to see the world that Kira was gonna create because of L's death and we got to see a lot of interesting scenarios because of that.

This and the fact that Light kills L and then Near and Mello basically getting revenge for L and Light dying in the end. It just wraps up the story neatly because lets face it... in the end Light started to stray from his original ideals and became more evil... he didnt deserve to live... his ideals and message already shaped the world... his work is done.. he can die now.
This is true, but it wasn’t handled super well imo. Killing L wasn’t a bad decision, but they jammed too much into a few episodes when really they needed at least 15-20 more episodes to establish the new cast properly.

Jackson made a very good point about not caring that much about Near and Mello. The problem is that for some reason anime rushed the second part of the story, after L's death, making it almost impossible to begin caring about either Mello or Near. There's also that infamous scene with Near looking at the screens and magically guessing that Mikami is the X-Kira, which looked completely different in the manga where his deduction was described in detail. Cuts like that were incredibly common in the last eleven episodes.
Because of all of this, their win feels kind of undeserved in anime.

Takada was so underutilized. Maybe if the second arc wasn’t so rushed these new characters could have had more spotlight. Unfortunate because this portion of the series gets shat on a lot but everything would’ve been resolved with better pacing.

Well that was an unexpected treat; just as this arc was unexpectedly good, and I still can’t believe it is so underrated. When I first discovered Death Note, from the first episode I immediately called that it was not going to end well for Light; because it was that kind of story that made it obvious from the beginning, but it did an amazing job to mislead and trick us so many times. There's no doubt Light is one of the best main characters ever written, as horrendous as he is. His psychology was really on point, the narrative didn't even miss on the realism of his response to his incapacity to escape like he used to. How ironic it is to see him so terrified by his own ability to break, his own mortality, when all this time he felt himself above every living thing and even death itself. It was just one of the most satisfying end of a show.
And the way you were all at the edge of your seat ?? Excuse-me… I couldn't help but think of the upcoming fall, when the last part of AOT's finale will finally get here haha

58:10 He hit bull's eye with the name though. He already wrote Nate with the pin before getting shot, then was about to write River with blood before being hit by the Matsuda barrage. As Nate pointed out during the 30 minute stalling, there was a good chance Light knew the name and face of the SPK people, no it was a quick impulsive judgement by him that the first name written was Near's, the first person that Mikami had to kill as Near showed Light the 'evidence'.
It was so satisfying to see Light lose all his cool when he was beat. Seeing how pathetic he acts when he knows he is beat shows his true nature.
I also love that line from Near when he says that him and Mello working separately cant even touch L, but when they work together they can stand with him. An amazing finale all in all.

if you guys will watch death note ova, you’ll learn that ryuk meets a new shinigami in shinigami world who looks and walks exactly like light. So the theory is maybe those who use death note and die when shinigami kills them, they become shinigami themselves. This explains what ryuk told light that those who use death note will neither go to heaven or hell.
58:10 When Light pulls out his watch he is actual writing down Near's real name Nate River. When Mikami writes down the names in the fake notebook he is able to see Near's real name which is why Light knows Near's real name when he writes in the paper.

Definitely love the ending and I understand a big part of Lights undoing is basically his pride/thinking he can't be beat, but it does bother me that he could have literally just asked Mikami to test the notebook on the way to the location and make sure its the real one, just in case they somehow managed to get their hands on it to prevent his undoing

I remember when saw the last episode and never forget it cuz it truly broke my heart so much 💔 when everything came to end for light and the way he was so alone at the end, everything about the last episode was so hard for me to handle i was so depressed back then that i couldn't bring myself to move on for a month and i cried so much 💔 it was just so hard for me as a Light fan 💔 and i hated to watch him lose and get killed like that he was a lonely hero a hero no one wants 💔
I can recommend reading the Manga "Short Stories" where its shown what happened with the Death Note before AND after Light (what the author just published 3 years ago). Actually there are more then just 2 stories and each of them were also published in different years (I think the pre-Light story was like from 2008 or earlier) very interesting stories
Especially the latest one really gave me that feeling of the anime itself, like one (or more) bonus episodes but still with the same tense

If you are looking for action and crazy explosions etc. Go watch something else. It's kinda like a biopic but with Christoper Nolans non linear storytelling. I personally didn't really feel the 3 hour runtime. 2 hours and 45mins passed before I even thought about what time it was lol
Did not expect an 8 episode finale upload. But here we are. Love this show. But I do have a little problem with the finale.
I've always found Near's plan to be really foolish for someone who was propped up to be someone so smart. As we know, Near's plan worked because Mikami made a miscalculation and did the same move that Light did, even when he was instructed not to do anything unnecessary or out of his normal pattern. Near succeeded out of luck. Especially when you remember that Near had ALREADY set the plan in place before he discovered Mikami had another notebook(we see him having an inner monologue about knowing what Light's plan is at the beginning of episode 35 but he finds out about the fake notebook at the end of the episode due to Mikami slipping up). So all of Light's monologue in the previous episode about how Near had fallen for such a simple game of bait and switch come off less as him being super cocky and moreso Near just also being oddly overconfident. He was so sure that he could literally risk everyone's lives and didn't even consider the possibility of a fake notebook being used until the stuff with Mikami. Imagine if Mikami hadn't taken that single misstep. Near gives that huge speech about how none of them are going to die. And then they did. It's not even like Light was taken out by his own shortcomings. Near just put all of his eggs in one basket and then managed to catch them before they hit the ground out of luck.
Anyway, that very naive plan aside, let's get into some analysis. I actually really liked Light as a Protagonist. He's just so unique in how far he's willing to go for his goals. He's willing to do dark things for his ambition without regret. But we also see moments where Light expresses his humanity. Like when he lost his memories for episodes 17-23. Or when he put aside the mission(symbolized by him dropping the pen) when his father died. The Light that cared for others was lost piece by piece until only Kira remained. In both a metaphorical and physical way, Light was a victim to the Death Note as well. And in his final moments, he saw who he was before all of this. Before he picked up the notebook. Millions of people were impacted by Kira, but he went out as Light Yagami. Fitting that we end on a shot of the Moon as that's another way his name can be read.
I agree that Nears plan is pretty naive, but the way I think about it is that Near is a very straightforward and logical thinker, so something tricky or out of the box like a fake notebook wouldn't naturally come to mind for him. Unlike L, who was very creative, risky and tricky with his plans, would think of that possibility since it's something he'd maybe think of himself.

When I first watched Death Note I disliked the ending mainly because I didn't like Near from the start and also he lucked out.
Now although I think it's better that Kira loses, what I still dislike about the ending is that it was literally impossible to recreate an entire notebook in such a short time. There were 10s of thousands of names there which would take a long time just to copy these names but remember Mikami analysed the notebook under a microscope. Furthermore it's Japanese so there are thousands of kanji characters that need to be recreated alomost perfectly for thousands of names. The fact that Near lucked out is also a bit dissatisfying but I like to justify it that way, that at pretty much anything, when you reach the skill ceiling it is luck that decides weather you succeed or not. At some point you do everything you can do but nobody is perfect so everyone messes up sometimes and it's a matter of chance (as if it can't really be predicted) when someone messes up and what are the consequences of that. Now while I was writing this I reminded myself of a quote from Attack on Titan said by Levi, that whatever decision you take the result is always a mistery. I found it kinda surprising that e.g. Mikami didn't test the notebook with some random person a few minutes before arriving at the scene. But since Kira and Near decided to meet up and end it once and for all, it made it end up a game of "I know that you know that I know..." and whoever stopped first was a matter of chance at this point and Mellow happened to influence it.
I never noticed the symbol of Light dropping the pen when his father dies so thanks for pointing that out. But it is nice that Light died in the middle of the stairs, symbolizing the rule of the Death Note that its users go to neither heaven or hell. I saw some theories he went to the Shinigami realm.
Yeah, Near's plan was supposed to fail. That was the point. Near by himself was no match for Light. Which is why Near came to the realization at the end that it took both him and Mello working together to stand side by side with L.
Totally agree your comment about Near/Near's plan. So many people say Light was beaten by Near (and Mello), or Light made mistakes, but the truth is Mikami made mistake, and Light in a way was beaten by Mikami for not following instruction, nothing else.
"Humans tend to make mistakes just when they are about to succeed." It's a quote from one of "next episode preview" in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. There was always a voice-over after each episode where non-character voice throws some wisdom. I always thought the quote exactly fits here for Yagami Light thus I have never forgetten the quote.
But Light didn't make mistake, it was Near who made a mistake but "recovered" due to luck. It was Mikami who made mistake by not following Light's instruction

i love his character it’s brilliant writing but he’s done some fucked up stuff, but in the end he did still stop global crime rate by 70% which would have been 90%+ if he didn’t die so early.
