  • What if Hispanic America became an independent country? It's Hispanic heritage month, and I think it's time to talk about a subject that is quickly making headway in Southwest American politics, regarding the future of the Hispanic-majority areas of the United States in an alternate history (alternate future?) style video.
Obviously anyone who knows me could tell that I don't support such a concept, but I'm merely exploring the possibility. Hope you find the video interesting and learn something new. Let me know your thoughts on this hypothetical scenario and thanks for watching!

The problem I have with most non Latino/Hispanic is that they thing everyone is Mexican. No one in Latin America besides Mexicans eat Tacos. Mexican culture is completely different to Argentinean culture. Argentineans don't learn America English they learn British English. And Countries like Paraguay have Spanish and guarani as an official language. Also the majority of the undocumented immigrants that are arriving to the USA are from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Not Mexico.

Mestizos want to pretend they are from spain 100% but spain wont give them home cuz they dont even look spanish now mexicans are without a homeland. Navajo land got benefits and rights and they are never told that its not their home cuz they never gave up their native tongue. tough titties. not conquistadors fault cuz if that were true castilian would be the only language in Spain. Yep spanish is not a language its a nationality because catalan, galician, valencian etc. Are languages that are spanish. Oh they still fight to keep their language Til this day, watch the riots online, doing this even though they still officially apart of spain. What excuse for mestizos? plenty of videos of these "pure" latin people denying indigenous cultural rights so keep blaming the conquistadors when its mestizos shutting the door on us.

Living in Texas all my life, I have a hard time even thinking of Mexico as another country. Considering a Mexican a foreigner is for me a bit of a stretch. They have been and always will be part of Texas culture.

@Paul Tello JAJAJAJAJAJAJA all the texan culture is based on Mexican culture so stfu

    • @sierra5713
      @sierra5713 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@Paul Tello In 1824 Mexico’s authoritarian ruler Agustín de Iturbide enacted a colonization law authorizing the Mexican federal government to allow legal immigration into Texas. This statute allowed foreigners to gain title to land.
Mexican liberals argued in favor of allowing foreigners to immigrate. This would satisfy multiple objectives, including promoting economic growth, increasing the number of males available to defend the country, and bringing new capital and skills into the country to replace those lost when many Spaniards were expelled or chose to leave the country.
The process for gaining an official land title was expensive and time-consuming, and many residents chose not to have the land surveyed or complete the application process. The Mexican law required immigrants to practice Catholicism and stressed that foreigners needed to learn Spanish and all people wishing to live in Texas were expected to report to the nearest Mexican authority for permission to settle.
Many Americans immigrated to Mexico, where land was cheaper. A few Americans who had become naturalized Mexicans settled in Texas during that time. Most of the immigrants came from the southern United States. Immigration of United States had begun to accelerate rapidly. The new population was not fully assimilated and by 1826, approximately 3,000 Americans from the United States were living illegally in Texas. Most of the immigrants came from the southern United States. Many were slave owners, and most brought with them significant prejudices against other races, attitudes often applied to the Tejanos. Most Anglo Americans tried to isolate themselves from Mexicans.
By 1830, Texas had a population of 7,000 foreign-born residents, with only 3,000 Mexican nationals. In regard to slavery, influential settler Stephen F. Austin, who reasoned that the success of his colonies needed slave labor and the economics it produced to lure more whites to the area. Anglos from the United States soon vastly outnumbered the Tejanos.
Mexican authorities became increasingly concerned about the stability of the region. The colonies teetered at the brink of revolt in 1829, after Mexico abolished slavery. In response, President Anastasio Bustamante implemented the Laws of April 6, 1830, which, among other things, prohibited further immigration to Texas from the United States, increased taxes, and reiterated the ban on slavery. The law explicitly banned any further immigration from the United States to Texas and any new slaves. The new Law rescinded all empresario contracts that had not been completed and prohibited Americans from settling in any Mexican territory adjacent to the United States. Secretary of State Lucas Alamán, who wrote the 1830 law, said that "Texas will be lost for this Republic if adequate measures to save it are not taken. Law of April 6, 1830 under President Anastasio Bustamante was issued because the Mexican state of Texas was in danger of being annexed by the United States. New issued settlement contracts were brought under federal rather than state control. Provisions of the law were designed to encourage Mexican citizens to move from the interior to Texas. Mexicans who agreed to relocate to Texas would get good land, free transportation to Texas, and some financial assistance. Convicts would be sent to Texas to build fortifications and roads to stimulate trade.
The lack of a formal policy had not stopped many immigrants. Settlers simply circumvented or ignored the laws. A number of people had left the United States to settle in the Mexican northern provinces. The ban and other measures did not stop US citizens from migrating to Texas by the thousands, and by 1834, it was estimated that over 30,000 Anglos lived in Texas, compared to only 7,800 Mexican-born residents.
Mexican authorities noted that slave reforms passed by the state were being ignored. By the end of 1835, almost 5,000 enslaved Africans and African Americans lived in Texas, making up 13 percent of the non-Indian population (The Mexican rules were widely disregarded and slavery remained in Texas until the end of the American Civil War). The attitudes of the immigrants prompted the Mexican-American War on February 2nd 1848, in which Mexico lost almost 55 percent of its territory to the United States drawing a bullshit line trough territory that used to be nothing but Mexico and some of these territories we know currently as Arizona,NewMexico,Texas,Nevada and of course California. All of those states used to be absolutely Mexico! so now you have people who are indigenous here who were made foreigners on there own land.
Mexicans form part of the U.S. history. We have the right to be in this land.
America is not a country it's a continent.
I don't know what's more criminal; crossing over a borderline of a country looking for the economic opportunity that allows you to work and earn or... going to another land across an ocean, taking over land killing &pushing its native people into concentrated areas, creating a trail of tears, deceiving other people of their true intentions and really trying to collect all these peoples gold to take it to their royal families killing"civilizing" them as they settle &conquer, or also bringing along a group of people who they used to perform hard labor of fields with no pay other than food, roof, lynching, shooting, cutting, burning!!!

0:40 The term "Mexican" for Latinos goes back to the time when the American southwest was a part of Mexico and the inhabitants were actually Mexican nationals. Back in those days if you ran into a Hispanic 99% of the time they were Mexican, so the term stuck. Obviously today it doesn't make as much sense, but often language is very slow to change.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the dominant Anglo-Americans relegated the Hispanics living in New Mexico to second-class social status, due to unfamiliarity and prejudice. Some of these "Anglos" were ethnocentric, deprecating Hispanic/Mexican culture and questioning the people's fitness for democracy. Some claim, in response, they constructed a "Spanish American" identity in an early instance of cultural citizenship (expressing Americanism through ethnic identity)
Around 1920, the term "Spanish-American" replaced "Mexican" in polite society and in political debate. The new term served both the interests of both groups. For Spanish speakers, it evoked Spain, not Mexico, recalling images of a romantic colonial past and suggesting a future of equality in Anglo-dominated America. For Anglos, on the other hand, it was a useful term that upgraded the state's image, for the old image as a "Mexican" land suggested the violence and disorder associated with that country's civil war in the early 20th century. This had discouraged capital investment and set back the statehood campaign. The new term gave the impression that "Spanish Americans" belonged to a true "American" political culture, making the established order appear all the more democratic.
New Mexico contributed some 17,000 men to the armed services during World War I. Thousands more from the state fought for the Allies during World War II.
World War I gave the Hispanics the opportunity to demonstrate American citizenship by participating in the war effort.
New Mexico proportionately suffered the loss of more servicemen than any other state in the nation in ww2. Their wartime contributions improved the conditions of minority citizenship for Nuevomexicanos but did not entirely eliminate social inequality.

And because I have some Spanish ancestors I'm suppose to be in the same category as some one who migrated from Mexico and/or South America even though my ancestors were here before the states were formed. People forget Spain had this land for hundreds of years before America was even formed...and in turn they had Europeans, not just spaniards, settle the land. I refuse to fill out those RACE/ETHNICITY forms because they are trying to limit us and fit us in one category and we all know life isn't like that so forget labels. I'm not going to deny the rest of my European ancestry that would be doing a disservice to ALL of my ancestors and denying myself.

Wait, so Latinos are people who originate from a Latin American country, and a Latin American country is any country that speaks a Latin language in America. According to the Canada act, French and English are both equally considered official languages in Canada. This means one of Canada's official languages is French, which is a Latin language, which makes Canada Latin American by definition. Not only that, because Canada is Latin American, that means Canadians are by definition Latinos. What about them apples?

Couldn't help but notice that you made this observation as well. I need to make a valley trip soon now that I have been practicing my Spanish. Plenty of opportunities to practice in Houston as well.

In 1824 Mexico’s authoritarian ruler Agustín de Iturbide enacted a colonization law authorizing the Mexican federal government to allow legal immigration into Texas.

9:35 I'm Mexican, typing this comment from Mexico City and I have to tell you that you're right when you say that "Hispanic" doesn't relate to race, but at this part of the video it seems that you think that only in the US Hispanic is used in that way and that the classification doesn't make sense, but you're wrong buddy.
Hispanic is anybody that was born in a Spanish speaking country, just as you said. Even Guinea Ecuatorial counts as Hispanic, even though is an African country. This is not only because the nation they live in speaks Spanish, but because their national culture is of Hispanic heritage. The Argentinians, the Uruguayans, the Costa Ricans are nations of mostly European descent, but they are Hispanic because of the language and because their culture is Hispanic. So if a Norweigan couple, for example, comes to my country and have their baby here and adopts the nationality, the child would be Hispanic. For us it makes all the sense in the world, you just have to be raised in a Hispanic country (that has the language and the culture) and you are considered Hispanic, and for me that's the beauty of it.

  • @Ygddhgrd
    @Ygddhgrd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I find it so strange how people from the US find it hard to differentiate between race, ethnicity and nationality. I'm from Europe, and to me it seems like something that's so obvious. It must be due to the unique history the US has with race. In the US it seems like your identity is either white or not white.

Many nations have these type of regions where they still receive benefits of the larger country but have more freedom in the region to have their separate laws and customs. The Philippines has the ARMM, Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

I visited Spain twice before in my life given that i was born in the very central heart of Europe. My parents brought me over immigrated here to Colorado when i was very young so integration as a Caucasian European Christian birth but lived in the Colorado Rockies 90% the whole transition for me was extremely subtle to the point of unnoticeable effects from my perspective . But having had the pleasure of being to spain throughout the years growing up my family and I periodically went back for brief visits to Europe and Spain’s populace from my observation was very evident how white Madrid and Barcelona were to where coming back to visit from an American naturalized habitat with Anglo-Saxon Sekler origins was still surprising being amongst them in their own land of Espana.Had i not known better because of my European origins but still how Caucasian Spain was didn’t shock me but tourists never having any insite of European cultures as a whole would have flipped out especially if they were of not as much of the South American audience because obviously mass settlements of argentina brazil but mainly of Mexican origins though definitely would have been puzzled the least ! Ultimately 70%of Mexicans and Latin Americans are at least 50% natives and Caucasians. That’s true genetics snd i hate to say it as far as those people that really dislike either kind the truth is that i have no reason to invent any of this and I don’t have to ! In my honest opinion i think its a beautiful thing .

Technically... yes... but "Latino" is just such a convoluted and abstract term that it really makes no sense. Surely a French Canadian from Quebec has much more in common with Anglo Canadians or even Anglo Americans than someone from Argentina or Brazil.
Personally, I like to define Latin America as everywhere South of the US including the Guyanas and the Caribbean (although they aren't Spanish-speaking) as it's just more convenient and makes much more sense.

Here in Chile the term Latin America is mostly used to the Spanish, Portuguese and French speaking countries of the Americas and the Caribbean. So countries like Belize and Jamaica are not considered latin American countries here :p but term it's not used for ethnic groups, just for people from a certain countries.
If some place like Quebèc becomes independent here it would be considered from Latin America.
And I think that is the most correct way to use the term because someone from Guyana or Curazao has almost nothing to do with being latino

Even with those concentrations they're not "Spanish speaking" areas. Much of the population may speak Spanish at home, but the language of government, commerce and education is English. I don't speak Spanish and not once did I find it to be a problem. Every office or business I go into I'm greeted in English, my workplace is English speaking, major media such as television and the newspaper and all public spaces are in English. About the only time they're in Spanish are small businesses catering to the Mexican population. So yeah, the fact the largest ethnic group is Mexican doesn't make it any less the United States.

Hey Massaman. Nice one. Only one issue: saying that there is no equivalent of Latino/Hispanic outside the US is incorrect. The concept and the words are in no way exclusively American. The word Hispanic is from hispano, a Spanish word just like Latino is from latino in Spanish. They mean the same thing in Spanish as they do in English and they existed in Spanish before there was a need to say them in English. In fact there is no doubt that Hispanics/Latinos connect at a ethnolinguistic level just like, say, Arabic or English speakers might in some way. Maybe even more. Makes sense right? One question that I have to ask and I've had no one asked this yet, why aren't Italians considered Latino? I mean shoot you have French speaking colonies that are considered non Iberian Latin how come Italians and not considered that their language is Latin to right?

Masaman I just hope you wont make any mistakes since it is a very sensitive topic amongst us Turks. Speaking of Turks from western Turkey, majority descends from Balkan Turks, Albanians and Bosniaks that fled or migrated to western Turkey. The Turks came from primarily Bulgarians and Macedonians, so we look European because of Albanians and Slavs, not Greeks. Also, the Greeks in Anatolia weren't ethnically Greek to begin with, they were native Anatolians like Lycaonians, Pisidians etc. that adopted the Greek identity and language after their conversion to Christianity.

    • @WandererOnTheGlobe
      @WandererOnTheGlobe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Masaman I also want to say that genetic studies show all Turks have Turkic admixture, although the amount is low. Some people misread genetic studies and think it says only 10-15% of Turks are "real" Turks. It says all Turks have 10-15% Turkic blood. I scored 4% with a DNA test btw.

I went to LA a few weeks ago and it definitely felt very Mexican. I think it has always been like that, You can't talk about the south of the U.S without the Mexicans and central American population being apart of that history.

I’m pretty sure the multitudes of illegal immigrants who have no intention of assimilating also has something to do with that. LA was very homogenous back then for Anglo Americans.

Homogeneity is one of the best ways to create a stable, unified, peaceful country. IQ also varies between ethnicity, as well as shared history, culture, language, and other biological factors like bone structure.

If a different group of people were in charge, you'd still have racism, bigotry, prejudice etc. There will always be some level of friction or conflict when you have different groups of people living side by side. Look at any other region of the world, and the phenomenon is the same, just varies by degree.

The border between the Mexican Empire and the Louisiana Purchase was not well defined, and many parts of Eastern Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado were claimed by both Mexico and the French Empire at the time of the Louisiana Purchase. Also, the Russian Empire's claims in Northern California also overlapped their territorial claims of New Spain, and also the newly independent Mexican nation. -- If the US hadn't taken control of what is now the Southwest, then most likely the British would have come down from the Dominion of Canada and taken over the entire Pacific Coast of North America. Also, if the British or the US didn't take over the Southwest, then most likely the Japanese would have considered it a very tempting prize during the expansion in the Pacific during the 1930s - 40s.

He also invented television itself in 1926, 3DTV in 1940, the first fully electronic colour TV in 1944, and high definition TV (1000 lines) in 1943. So no, a mexican did not invent colour TV, that's a lie so mexicans can feel proud about something.
