Tarkus (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) - Pipe Organ arrangement by Owen Tellinghuisen
มุมมอง 4K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here is something completely different, something that has been a passion project of mine for a while. I am delighted to present my own arrangement and interpretation of Tarkus for pipe organ. Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Tarkus", written in 1971 primarily by keyboardist Keith Emerson, is one of the defining compositions of the prog rock era. At over 20 minutes in length, it spans the full A-sid...
Improvisation on "Ah, Holy Jesus" [Herzliebster Jesu]
มุมมอง 254ปีที่แล้ว
This was a completely improvised take on the hymn tune “Herzliebster Jesu”, most commonly associated with the text “Ah, Holy Jesus”. Ranging from atmospheric to brutally rhythmic, from tonal to harshly dissonant, this improvisation reflects the dark and deeply introspective text of the hymn. I sat on this recording for a while before uploading it, mostly because I wasn't happy with the entire i...

Franz Liszt, Pilgerchor aus "Tannhäuser" (Richard Wagner), S.676/1
มุมมอง 380ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of Franz Liszt's transcription/paraphrase of Wagner's famous Pilgrim's Chorus from "Tannhäuser" for organ. Liszt wrote two versions of this arrangement for piano as S.443/1 and /2 respectively, and later arranged them both for organ. Not as technically demanding as most of Liszt's compositions or later transcriptions for organ, this arrangement nonetheless features a monu...
Nicolaus Bruhns, Praeludium in G major
มุมมอง 2762 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of Nicolaus Bruhns' Praeludium in G major. This piece is an example of the Stylus phantasticus composition, and features alternation between fantasia-like sections and two fugal developments. Notably, the first fugue features two independent voices in the pedal. Bruhns himself was a student of Dietrich Buxtehude and one of the most prominent organists of the late 17th cen...
Felix Mendelssohn, Sonata No. 5 in D Major
มุมมอง 4142 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of Felix Mendelssohn's fifth sonata, the shortest of his six sonatas (Opus 65) for organ. The piece is built on an unknown chorale tune that Mendelssohn himself may have written, and follows the form of a Chorale-form Andante, followed by an Andante con moto movement with active pedal, and finally a grand Allegro section. Andante: 0:00 Andante con moto: 1:30 Allegro: 4:42...
Sergei Rachmaninoff, Prelude in e minor, op. 32, no. 4
มุมมอง 2722 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of Rachmaninoff's Prelude in e minor, from his op. 32 set of preludes. This is one of the longest and most complex preludes Rachmaninoff wrote, and it is built on a repeated octave with accompanied staccato chords. It reaches a climax marked in the score as "presto possibile", and requires great dexterity and facility to manage the fast and sweeping sections. Despite its ...
Fantaisie chromatique - improvisation
มุมมอง 2972 ปีที่แล้ว
Recorded in Auer Hall at Indiana University This was a completely spontaneous improvisation on a brief, chromatic theme. The improvisation is in a fantasy style, and grows to a large climax at the end of the piece. While I have improvised in this style before, this is considerably more adventurous and less tonally centered than most of the previous videos on my channel. I hope you enjoy hearing...
Elsa Barraine, Prélude and Fugue in G minor
มุมมอง 8932 ปีที่แล้ว
0:07 Prélude 5:45 Fugue "sur un chant de prière israëlite" This is my performance of Elsa Barraine's Prélude and Fugue No.1 in G minor. Elsa Barraine (1910-1999) was a French composer who studied under Paul Dukas at the Paris Conservatoire, and her music is seldom performed today. The Prelude is led by a flowing, chromatic ostinato sequence, while the Fugue of this composition is subtitled “sur...
Sergei Prokofiev, Piano Sonata no.3 in a minor, op.28
มุมมอง 3233 ปีที่แล้ว
This is my performance of Prokofiev's imposing third piano sonata, a single-movement piece with rapid key changes and highly technically demanding stretches. The piece does not follow a strict sonata form as a whole, but if broken down by section, there are some patterns of sonatas that present themselves. My performance is under tempo of most recordings; while this piece is often performed ver...
Improvisation on Two Triads
มุมมอง 1253 ปีที่แล้ว
Recorded on December 15, 2020. This was a completely improvised recording based on an alternating theme between D major and B major. Initially a brief theme is presented softly on the Swell and repeats several times. The theme then becomes a sequence on the Great and modulates through several keys before eventually resolving, after which point the two chords are again presented with an energeti...

Sublime. Any organ student who performs Durufle flawlessly on his senior recital is already a great organist. Forty-two years ago, I stayed on safe ground with Bach and Buxtehude. You played a wonderful recital, I truly enjoyed it! Best to you in your future!

For years I have thought hearing this and other ELP pieces played on a pipe organ would be cool and I finally got one. I really enjoyed this. I have heard many piano transcriptions and recently a nice acoustic guitar transcription which I have loved but on the pipe organ with bass pedals is really special. I have listened to and loved Tarkus for 50 years. I happy to see young people interested in ELP’s music. You played it beautifully and I imagine that Keith would have approved.

I was a big fan of ELP in my day (that makes me old). I grabbed this album as soon as it first came out, around 1971 I believe. I thought then, and still do believe this song, the whole Tarkus side A, was awesome and among their greatest achievements. You have have done justice to the song. I kept waiting for some spot where I was going to say, "Oh well, nice try but you messed up this or that" but it didn't happen. This was really a joy to listen to. Thanks so much.

This is fantastic. You play this with such respect for the original material - I know Keith would have been proud!. You also have done a masterful job of really coaxing the most out of the limited resources of a small but very well-balanced instrument. Is the specification the same as listed in the OHS database online? If so, bravo. I know a lot of organists who couldn't have done as well with an instrument 3 times that size.
