I just went to PD event where they gave us the book "THE First Days of School: How to be an Effective Teacher" by Harry Wong and Rosmerta Wong and it's amazing, the PD was amazing, and I'm so happy to see more real life examples of the first week of school!
I have been having those nervous thoughts resurface that I'm not cut out for this, I have no idea what I'm doing, everything is going to be a disaster, etc. But watching this really helped ease my tensions as the school year approaches--Thank you!
Good luck girl, teaching is incredibly hard. My first year teaching was in 2019. It can be easy to get overwhelmed, so go easy on yourself. In my opinion, the 3 most important things to focus on are 1. Lesson planning 2. Classroom management and 3. Building a positive relationship with the kids. Seek help from colleagues. Ask them to watch one of your classes and give advice. Be fun with the kids, but always make sure to have strict boundaries in terms of your expectations. Good luck!!
Thank you so much for sharing this, I love all of your ideas! I didn't think about the benefits of allowing students to choose their own seats the first day of class--the way you explained it, it makes so much sense.
Hello, I recently found you & am so grateful! Currently, I teach 6th grade self contained. It's my 1st year as a general education teacher. Last cycle I taught Art & loved it! Looking forward to watching videos. You have just become a tool in my tool box for my personal development. Thank you so much!
Yay, I was one of the people who requested this video. Thank you so much, I'm teaching at a new school and I want to get it right, so this is really helpful!
This eased my nerves a bit cause I'm going to start teaching high schoolers this year. Still not sure which social studies discipline I'll be given, but most likely global which is a subject area I have not had the experience teaching yet. But, seeing this video helped me to consider how to go about planning the first week and finding ways to plan out my lessons over the weekend so that it becomes less overwhelming for me
Your videos have been so helpful and informative. I was hoping you could do a video on the consequence ladder you discussed in a previous video. How do you correct certain types of behavior without affecting their grade? Thank you 😊💙
Thank you so much for all of your videos. This will be my first year as a high school teacher and I’m a ball of nerves because I only taught elementary scholars.
Love this!! Definitely got some great ideas from this! I’m a second year teacher who had a rough first year so, definitely looking to revamp ALOT of things. Glad I came across this video! **New Subscriber **
I can def do a video with my syllabus (when I make it) lol but usually contact info, important things about the class, units of study, basic school rules and if its a class you've taught before I like to add major assessment dates, projects or tests..I never know the exact date but I always mention the month.
Thank you for the ideas! This will be my first year teaching, so this is very helpful. I was wondering what program/app you use to map out your lesson plans-the one with color-coded columns representing each day of the week-or did you create it yourself? Much gratitude for your videos!
Hi! I am so glad this video was helpful and good luck with your first year. I did make this myself. I created a table and made each column a different color. I usually don't use apps because my schools requires us to submit lesson plans on a format they created, so I just made this for the purpose of the video.
I teach seniors and have not had push back. I always preface it that its an easy 100 to start the yr and many of the rules are connected to the overall school rules. They take it as a challenge to start the year off strong with their grade.
Would you still start off with first full day of content on the fourth day of school even if they didn’t have that Thursday off? I’m still trying to figure out pacing lol
Yes, I would. Especially if I were teaching HS. If it were middle school the other procedures might take longer and some things might roll over depending on how many students you have in your class. ( google classroom log in, seating chart etc) But thats also why I said every year it varies. Every school year we have either started with a half day somewhere in the week or a 4 day week. Keep in mind this is for a 56 min class. If it were 45 min I would def have to cut some things out. I am not sure I'd be able to get all of that done in 45 min. Those 11 min make a HUGE difference.
I teach EAFL in Germany so I don’t know how well that would work in Morocco, but I have them collect any kind of English words they already know in a big collage to visualize how much they already know and how much English there is in our everyday life. It’s fun and encouraging for them and they are so proud of themselves :) For older students I bring flags from all kinds of English speaking countries. They can pick one they feel the most connected with or are most interested in etc. Then everybody can introduce themselves and say why they picked their flag.

So glad it was helpful! Happy planning!
This was superrrr helpful!
Wondering if you could give an example of what to include on a syllabus.

Great
56 minutes classes 😭😭😭 I wish!!!! Ours are 42 minutes 😭😭😭😭😭
This was very helpful! Is the student survey the same questions from the ice breaker speed dating activity?
Also! How do students respond or react to the class rules quiz? I have a bunch of 16-17 year olds

I'm a new teacher but I still don't know which class i will be teaching and I'm very anxious because i don't know what to plan
I teach absolute beginners in Morocco where English is taught as a foreign language. Any ideas for the first week of school?

@@mgthale yes, the idea of collecting English words sounds good. Especially in Morocco most of us know about foreign languages. Thank you.
