As a new teacher it's so hard for me to let go of my perfectionism. Especially this year it's been so hard to just accept that some lessons aren't going to be perfect.
Omg this came just in time. My first year is kicking my butt, and everything you mentioned, especially the perfection part stresses me out constantly. I just want to have good lessons and be a great teacher and I always feel like I’m failing 😔 Thank you so much 😊
The mistake I made as new teacher (though I'm still a new teacher hhhhh), was being slow in my teaching. Each lesson took me many hours to finish. I was stressed when I found out that I had to be quick and that I had limited time to finish the programme. I even avoided speaking to the headmaster. I was afraid he would ask me whether I'm making satisfactory progress in the programme. But when I thought carefully about how I was teaching, I found where the problem was. I added a lot of unnecessary information and activities. Then I eliminated all these and focused only on what was really important for my students to know. And if I wanted them to get additional information, I hand them handouts that contain everything. I also make myself free to change and adapt any activity in the textbook so that it doesn't take too much time (in a way that doesn't affect the students' understanding, of course). This worked and finishing the programme on time is no longer a problem.
One thing I'm learning about in my graduate program right now is Understanding by Design, or backward design, meaning to basically plan a unit by first thinking of the essential understandings students should have by the end of the unit and plan assessments and meaningful lessons from there. It keeps you from adding in activities just for the sake of doing activities, while also making sure the activities you do include generate understanding rather than simply fact memorization. So kind of like what you describe. I'm not a teacher yet, so I found this concept very helpful since I have student teaching coming up soon.
@@amandalynn2732 I am still learning backwards design myself and it still stumps me !!! I feel as I am still building my arsenal as a teacher or what I call my Batman belt 😂 I definitely am there with you as I’m trying to teach for understanding as opposed to memorization although culinary is a lot of memorization.
It's so true. Trying to make the perfect material and planning made me so stressed 😥 I had to learn the hard way that everything is not going to be 100% perfect and that's ok, as long as my students learn that's enough ☺️
As someone who's high nerved and a perfectionist I really want to thank you for this! I'm a becoming teacher in a month or so, and I'm already beating myself up, so thank you Amanda ❤
I’m going to be starting a MAT program soon, where I will get my masters and teaching certification together. This video gave me peace and calmed my nerves. Thank you!❤️❤️
Thank you for the advice. I actually got hired as a teacher and grades are due next week. I teach High School US History and teach ELD due to teacher shortage….I’ve been extremely stressed out. I’ll take into consideration to plan weekly moving forward, since I do plan daily. This advice has been very useful to me. Thank you.
Thank you Amanda!! This video has been very helpful! I am currently in a residency program, and I am 100% guilty of these new teacher mistakes. Thank you again, and I have shared your video/channel with my cohort peeps in the program. Have a good day!
