The video of skaters swinging their boards in a fight reminds me of when I first started skating in the 90s. There we other kids who like to fight and jump people, who'd confront us, but almost always just walk away. Sometimes if there were enough of them they'd start fighting, but who attacks people holding skateboards. Especially when we held our boards with a mall-grab. We know what parts of the board hurt the most, because we've been hit by them many many times. When they did attack we'd stand far apart back to back and throw a few nose/tail jabs to the ribs, strikes with the truck or truck axel, or hits with the the thin side of the board, and they'd back off. What did they expect to happen? We made sure to not hit heads, but they still sometimes got broken bones, and since they started it and had more people they wound up with charges from the police after their truly shitty parents tried to get us in trouble.
When I was 11 or so I started skating and I didn't know yet which groups of kids were cool to hang out with and which weren't (yes, skating was that popular in 1998). I was kicking it with these really bad kids one day and we ate at McDonald's and then we hung out by the back of the restaurant while a couple of the kids threw pebbles at cars. One pickup truck that got hit busted a u turn and drove straight through a vacant, desert lot to pull up on us and a guy who was about 30 got out to square up with the kid who threw the rock that hit his car. Said kid was about 14 or so. The kid immediately swings his board a couple of times at the man. I remember to this day that it was a green, 8 inch, Girl Skateboards deck with a big, pink, Girl logo and matching, green Grind King trucks- I'd ridden it a couple of times to ollie my first gap and I still recall how utterly gigantic it felt compared to my 7.75, Zero deck with the three skulls and Destructo trucks. The man had managed to dodge the first couple of swings and on the next one, a big, arcing, overhead chop, he grabbed the board with both hands, yanked it out of the kid's, and cracked his skull open with one swing of his own. It happened all in one motion- him grabbing the board, using its momentum to reel it back and swing it overhead like it was a bucket full of water, and bringing it down square on top of the kid's forehead to crack it like an egg.
The part about the Eames chair was really fascinating. I worked at a skateboard factory and never knew that. Do you know where I could find more info about it? Thanks
I spent a week training at the Herman Miller Greenhouse in Michigan a few years back. Hearing boards brought up in the initial tour re: ply moulding techniques, was pretty rad. The irony of the process being developed for leg splints didn’t fall flat (pun unintended). Fun fact: a few of the guys in the design dept. at the time actually skate.
Spooky skateboard fact: I just got a wicked sick Darkthrone Transylvanian Hunger skate deck in the mail today, also have one of the Samhain coffin decks in my collection. The originals were hand screened by danzig himself and sell for thousands of dollars
