  • I want to share with you how we use Spelling Power in our homeschool. This is our first year using it, and it’s going great so far! Both my first grader and third grader are becoming better spellers because of it!
Hi everyone! My name is Julie, and I'm a mama to FIVE now! My kids are 8, 6, 5, 3, and newborn. I post videos every Monday that are either mommy tips, favourites, homeschool curriculum reviews, birth/postpartum tips, hauls, or some other kind of 'mommy' video! I also post vlogs most Fridays. Thank you for checking out my channel, and I hope you subscribe so you can keep up on my videos! I love to keep in contact with those who watch my videos to find out what's going on in your life, so please comment below. I always read your comments! :)

I know a few fun activities you can do with your spelling words. 1. Ghost words- they write each word with a white crayon and then color over it with any color marker. It is like magic and my students love it. 2. Dice roll. You make a chart (assign each number on the dice a different color). They roll the dice and whatever number the dice lands on they write their word in that color.

This was a great video. I own a daycare and I try to introduce a lot of the curriculum into my home daycare the from ages 2 to 3. Thanks for this info and I look forward to Mondays for your awesome content.

I like the idea to ask them to use sentences with all five words! That would definitely be tough but it’s a fun way to get them thinking! You’re doing a great job! :)

I know how it is to be quite while baby is sleeping. I often watch yt with no sound and just captions because of that.

I'm glad you found a program you like. Spelling power did not work for us. The real test for us was if they spelled the words correctly in their daily writing. We did not see an improvement when we used Spelling Power. We used Sequential Spelling (for 3rd child) & Spelling u see( tweaked to fit us) (for 4th child) and saw huge improvements. Time is a big consideration when picking curriculum. I will be curious to see how well you like SP at the end of the year.

Very interesting! Different curriculum works best for different people, for sure. 😊

It would have been helpful to see the book to get more of an idea for what this curriculum is like. Thanks!

Very interested in using this next year. Rebought the book for a $1 with some used curriculum. My question is how do you cover spelling rules or do you not go worry about those or go over them?

I read what it says at the top of each group of words, or I’ll just explain it on a case by case basis. We also use Explode the Code which explains phonics, so that helps out with spelling too 😊

We don’t use a curriculum but if we find one that helps I’ll use one with my kids!!! It takes longer than a week for my kids to learn words!!! We do a phonics approach to spelling without a curriculum. I like the idea of copying them out in a sentence!!! I like the idea of carrying a word over to the next week!!! Get them to wire oldest words at some point maybe not in selling time.

I let the kids write "silly stories" using their spelling words. We also call them "nonsense" sentences.
I like the idea of combining the ideas of Spelling Power with Spelling U-See. Spelling U-See implements reading and really looking at the letter combinations. The only thing about Spelling U-see is that the illustrations are not great for older students who have a difficult time with spelling, although we have altered it by using magazines about horses for favorite books to practice the same exercises, but we don't have an answer key. Would love to create something that combines Spelling Power and Spelling U see.
    Do you use the activities?

My 8 year old is finally ready to do spelling. Are you still using this same 5 day process for Spelling Power? I assume you still do Explode The Code too in addition to spelling right?

    • @mamatofive1
      @mamatofive1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes! We use both Spelling Power and Explode the Code. Because we only do school 4 days a week, I’ve gone down to a 4 day cycle, so we can get new words each week 😊

Are you still using this? I am searching for a spelling curriculum for my struggling reader.

I’m not currently using it since we switched to Gather Round, and spelling is incorporated in it. I would still recommend Spelling Power before anything else though! I’m still contemplating if I want to add more spelling in with our curriculum, and if I do, this is for sure the one we’re using 😊

@@mamatofive1 Good to know :) I used it briefly with my oldest last year in the way it is intended to be used. I liked your method better :) I am going to be doing GR full time SOON & I'm so excited. We are adding in a little extra LA, but not much because the GR LA looks pretty good.
