I've suffered through so many PSP battery mod videos, looking for one that doesn't make my ears bleed, and I finally found it - thanks! Yours is by far the best, clearest, and most informative battery mod video online...excellent!
I have a "no experience" question: I just bought an LG battery to use for this mod, but it doesn't have those two long wire-type things sticking out of it (that you bent over and taped down). Do I just solder the wires directly to the + and - contacts on the battery then?
Oops really delayed reply, youtube didnt notify me of your reply. Yes you would just solder little wires onto the pads marked + and -. Just be quick since the plastic tends to melt.
@@sjm4306 how is it holding up now? I have a 3010 and I have removed the umd drive, I was looking for a battery that would fit perfectly in that spot so I don't need to do much plastic cutting, I never soldered anything, and since I'm Brazil and will be probably importing the battery, I have to be sure it will all work out, was looking for 3k/4k mah batteries, would you care to suggest some? Anyway this could be done with phone batteries (xiaomi) or powerbanks (adapting USB somehow? ) thx!!!!
You man are amazing. The amount of knowledge that's implicit to what you're doing here that you're sharing with us is stupendous. Also love the in-depth explanations of how certain bits work. I am just looking to get into soldering, circuitry, mods (been disassembling and doing basic PSP fixes, part for part, for a while) and this is just what I was craving after. Thanks!!
There apparently is a NoUMD mod you can install with a homebrew firmware which can aid this setup. Personally having made the error to keep a lithium battery in a small space I would suggest a custom door with a grill and go ahead and cut a small opening for the wire for a more comfortable fit just for the temperature worries. Great idea in general and excellent video quality. Funny how the video quality feels like it may be the last thing viewers would care about but as it turns out you could be talking about the digestive system of dartfrogs ... incorrectly... but if it's well lit, edited properly and has an unnecessary amount of pixels people will watch it. 😄
You could get three battery packs and utilize the space in the old battery as well with a balanced charger module added. I don't think it matters to the board to get even more hours out of it.
Thank you for the great video. You inspired me to do the same mod to my psp 2004 using a Playstation Vita 2210 mah battery. Incredible battery life gain. No more Chinese crappy psp batteries.
Hi sjm. I discovered your video yesterday and I'm amazed. I bought a used PSP 3000 last year, but the original battery is dying out, so I tried the same battery you used to begin your mod; obviously, I expected poor results from that knockoff, but wanted to try it out. Instead of throwing it away, now thanks to you I have hope that I can still take advantage of the circuit board for the PSP. Now I won't have to worry about batteries for it for the rest of my life. So just for that, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. But since it's been more than a year, I wanted to hear if you have experienced any issues with your mod: heat, voltage, the PSP turning off without warning, etc. Best regards.
I used a 2500mAh lipo battery I pulled from a battery bank. I made this video years ago and put hundreds and hundreds of hours of play on the battery so it's pretty weak now compared to when I first installed it so it could use a replacement now. Lipos unfortunately have a limited lifespan even if you take care of them.
Honestly, since i don't want to mod my psp, with such a great battery that you found, i would just create a holder for the battery on top of the door of the optical drive to keep the OP. I think this is a great fit battery!
sjm4306 i could use this mod but as of now i got 3 psp 2000 all of em have broken lcd and missing battery , i'll try do this mod and film it once i got the missing parts , keep up the good work mate
I tried with an old official Sony one that was bulging. Unfortunately the Sony ones have much bigger boards and are more delicate. The little metal bit that join to the plastic connector snapped. I removed it and tried soldering 3 little wires to reconnect everything. I had a bit of success and managed to turn my psp on but while trying to setup everything more permanently, one of the soldering I did pulled out the entire trace and snapped it. I spotted a couple areas where I could try soldering new wires but they are so small and I am out of flux. Now I don't know what to do. Those batteries with the white text with boards that look sturdier would cost me 10$CAN to buy. I bough a 15$ battery before that was actually good. Says Ostent os on it. 1200mah and it seem pretty accurate. I already invested 6$ in the 2000mah cell. My Ostent actually work so I don't dare opening that one up.
Great video btw. This is really helpful that I might consider doing this modding on my own. I recently bought a used PSP and I noticed that I have the same problem as 29:13 . I found out that there's a plugin called noumd. Tried it and never looked back.
Yes to noumd and yes to standby drain (the "sleep" mode of course still consumes power, you need to fully power down the psp by holding the power switch for a few seconds to stop drawing power from the battery).
This is a pretty cool idea. Like how you didn't just say "heres a mod i did. until next time ~" like a lot of people seem to do. Make sure you get enough sleep though ok? ;)
Thanks, yeah sometimes I'm too lazy to show the modding process but I figured this would be interesting to document. And rest assured (pun intended), I slept like a log shortly after filming this. Some people count sheep, I hack things ...
I'm trying to do a mod like this, but want a larger capacity than 2500 mAh (just because). I did buy a few batteries, but I was an idiot and didn't fully measure as some were WAY too big. I'm working to buy a new battery that will flawlessly fit, and these are my findings on how I'm picking it. Here are the max battery measurements that I'd recommend when looking for a battery As long as it's UNDER all these parameters, then it should fit. With a larger capacity battery (longer length), it does have to meet a stricter measurement (due to the left part). -- Battery thickness (height) I'd say under 7mm, preferred as close to 6mm as possible. I bought a 4,200 mAh battery that was 8.5mm thick, and the UMD door will NOT close. It's sticking out so it's too tall in height. That's why I'd recommend a 6mm. -- For Width from the top to bottom where the UMD was, that area is around a very tight 70mm (probably 68mm). HOWEVER, the left side where the battery normally goes is just under 55mm. So I'd say the max Width should be 50mm (you will have very small room to spare). -- For Length, if you go from the left to the right all the way across, that distance is about 110mm. Now, that would be a very "tight" fit so I'd recommend a max of 105mm to give some room to spare. So, for a recap: My estimated max room to play with when coming up with a battery for the back (if you want to take up all the room): Height: 6mm would be ideal. Not sure if 6.5 or 7.0mm will work. All I know is 8.5mm is way too much. Width (If only using UMD Section): Under 70mm for sure. I'd say 65mm to be safe. Length (using only the UMD Section): This will only give you around 70 to 73mm in length to play with for the UMD section only. Width (using the whole section, from left and UMD): The width is around 54mm. Max should be 50mm to give some wiggle room. Length (using the whole section, from left and UMD): Measures about 110mm across. Estimate a 105mm max to avoid a super tight fit. ======================= The super, TL;DR version, going by Height x Width x Length (maximum range and should fit): For only UMD Section: 6mm x 65mm x 70mm. For whole back section: 6mm x 50mm x 105mm. NOTE: You may have to cut some plastic parts off, especially the section that divides UMD and Battery.
Uhm hi first of all tnx for this awesome tutorial really helped me a lot on my busted psp battery... Just have some questions thou..have you had this problem on your battery cuz i have this problem in my battery mod when my battery is running low maybe 10% or so my psp just shuts down and resets and cant turn it on until i plug it again in to the charger..im only annoyed because it resets the psp.. showing the sony bootup logo and cannot continue on the game that i left after it shutdown..normally on the before i mod my battery it shows a dead battery icon on the screen before my psp shutdown now it just turn off instantly.. Have you had this problem on your mod..Haha its just annoying that it resets the psp without knowing when will it happen and forgot to save your progress on a game..
I use a battery percentage plugin and when it gets to around 25% I charge it. Because we are using a different capacity cell the built in bar meter is no longer calibrated so I wouldn't trust it.
Great video my man! Wanted to do something similar for a long time and you nailed it. Listen, is there any way you could find the battery bank you linked previously or as close as you can find and link it again? Your sponsored link is no good now and i really want to give this a go! Thanks!
Hi sorry for the delayed reply, I just got back from an international trip. The closest I could find to the battery bank I used is this one on ebay ebay.us/ARwAqD
firebirdude2 Still works and charges great. I only leave my PSP on the lowest brightness and low to medium speaker volume as I only use it indoors and so far I estimate runtime to be around 12-13 hours running a variety of psx and PSP games off a 64gb sd card in a ms pro duo adapter.
Holy..... DAMN NICE! Someone should spec a battery from other product that happens to fit even better than yours. Because you and I both know LOTS of people are playing off SD/MS and not using the UMD drive. Could you post the exact size of the battery you installed? So we can look for something similar?
I just did this mod with a vita battery( 2210 mah). It fits snug with a small amount of work and I get great battery life. At full charge it lasted me full 7 hours in Chinatown Wars with the brightness at 3 and sound at max. Awesome
Hi! I hope you can see this comment. I have some questions. Using a battery with 3.8v would minimize the lifespan of the psp? And, the circuit board of the psp battery differs from model to model? Like, a 1800mAh is different from the circuit of a battery with 2000mAh? I'm planning to install a galaxy s4 battery in my psp, but i don't have so much knowledge in electrical area :) Btw, nice video! One of the most informatives that i saw of this mod :)
Luís Felipe Marconi Thanks for watching. The psp doesn't run directly off the battery, but rather uses a dc dc converter to generate the necessary voltages so being 0.1V off has little to no effect. In fact the 3.7v or 3.8v naming has little bearing since termination voltages for lithium rechargeables are actually around 4.2v. The psp batteries have a small circuit board that also tell the psp what size battery is attached so it can calculate remaining charge so when you do this mod the battery meter icon will no longer be accurate but the low battery warning will still work. I've heard that there is a way to change the reported capacity in some Chinese batteries but have yet to verify that.
great video, you took your time to explain and that helped me understand this quite a lot. I have a quickie question, I have a 4000 and 4400 mah battery (both at 3.7v) laying around, would it be unwise to put such a large battery into the psp?
HatterAndHare Thanks. A ~4000mAh battery will be just fine so long as it fits, just be aware that it will take quite awhile to fully charge (around four times as long as the stock battery). I can't imagine how long that battery would last, but with my 2500mAh battery I am getting upwards of 12 hours.
sjm4306 sweet, thanks for the quick reply. I can totally deal with longer charge times, if it's going to last me all day I may as well charge it overnight! scrolling through the comments section I noticed mention of a timer? I'm not a tech wiz but I assume this is referring to the chip in the battery only accepting charge for the stock size (ie it would only charge to 1200mah if that was the size of the original cell). hoping I've misunderstood and I don't have to do battery gymnastics to get it to fully charge
HatterAndHare The psp will use the full capacity of any battery attached but it uses the size of the stock battery (1200mAh) to calculate the percentage remaining and estimated runtime. In layman's terms the battery meter may not be accurate but the low battery warning which is based off voltage and not estimated capacity will still be fine. Also the first few times you charge it make sure you keep an eye on it for any heating or swelling of the battery just in case.
sjm4306 phew, what a relief. thanks for all your help, and as a final question before I get started on this, do you recommend buying a cheap battery from amazon/ebay to use the chip in that, rather than the chip in my stock battery?
HatterAndHare Yes I would definitely suggest sacrificing a cheap Chinese clone battery before an oem sony one. The clone batteries circuit boards are fine but the internal cell is where they cheap out.
hi, sjm. Your video inspired me and helped me through a big battery mod installation. I was hoping you could help me with a problem since you seem to be a very knowledgeable tinkerer. Installed a 4000 mah battery in my PSP 3000 a week ago and it was working great. However, just today, the PSP quit mid game while the battery was about half way. At this point it can only be powered on with and AC adapter. With the battery installed and the AC adapter plugged in, the LED glows orange and the battery icon in the upper right of the home screen shows as full. In battery information it only reads "External source" while everything else blank. Also, I used a voltmeter while the battery was installed and it read about 3.9V for the 3.7V 4000 mah lipo. Any ideas what's going on? I would greatly appreciate any tips that you might have.
Thanks for the kind words. I would check the three battery contacts that connect between the battery pcb and the psp. I had a similar issue where the chinese battery I used had loose contacts and would ittermitantly cause symptoms you've described until I bent the fingers on the metal contacts tighter.
Thanks for your response, sjm. I went back in and examined the connections. Turned out that one of the wires from the battery to the PCB was brittle and snapped during examination. It was probably a loose connection. After re-soldering and almost giving up (I made a mess out of the PCB) it is back to normal! Thanks again, sjm. I look forward to finding another interesting project from your channel!
Thank you for an informative video. Helps a lot as I am going to try it on my psp3000. It looks like you used a battery with 5.0 mm thickness, but as you mentioned the height inside (no UMD drive) is around 10 mm. In the video it looks snug already when all is closed. Is a 6.8 mm thick battery gonna cut it?
Abraham De Santiago From what I remember there was plenty of room in the thickness department, the issue for the battery I had was the width was a tight fit.
Great mod! I made this mod a few months ago, but the battery drains while the console is off ... The curious thing is that during gameplay consumption is normal and durable. I'm thinking it might be a battery defect, but I'd like your opinion. Thank you very much!
Yeah I guess it's either something wrong with the psp (not likely though if it didn't drain the oem battery) or the battery protection board. I will say though that the psp will drain the battery a bit when put into standby/sleep mode unless you completely shut it off (by holding the power switch for a few seconds till the screen goes black) but if it's completely going flat faster than a month or so while sleeping then it's definitely not normal.

This is great. I see that the protection circuit from the new battery is removed. I doubt you need it anyway because the knockoff circuit is the protection circuit itself. I wonder how the charging would be affected if the new battery's circuit was kept on.
BronxShots Charging would minisculy be slowed by having two protection boards on. The self discharge would be increased as well. Overall wouldn't hurt anything having two protection circuits cascaded but it won't help anything either.
hey, nice video, I've always wanted to try this mod for my psp 1000, I have an old cellphone battery laying around I could use to try. You mentioned at the end of the video you'd have to "cycle" the battery to recondition it, could you tell me how is done? or how this process is called so I can look for it. Thank you very much!
So lately i managed to upgrade my Kindle battery which is dead for long time . İ had a GM tab battery of 7000 mah . And Kindle battery was 1700 more or less . İ took apart and take the chip, soldered to New battery and it worked as hell. Now i have 7000 mah e book reader that will last for weeks and maybe months. But it took me a while to figure it out the system for data pin 😀
i watch many videos for 2 or 3 days on how to remove umd door and this is the best i can found wich is tutorial on how to Mod psp battery DAMN its realy piss me of 7:30
Great idea 😉 Maybe a stupid question from a battery noob: would charging while using the psp be safe or should I only use while not charging? and whatever the answer is, would it be the same with a li-ion battery from a smartphone?
champen22 The psp was designed to be able to use while charging and simply changing the battery wouldn't affect this. The only bit of caution I would advise is after changing the battery, during the first few recharges keep an eye on the psp and every once and awhile touch the back to make sure it isn't getting hot. Once you've put a few recharges in and everything is fine then you can be rest assured that the battery will behave.
Good Night! This is the best tutorial ever!!! What is the model of the battery? Where I can buy? Does this works on PSP1000? Thank you for your attention, have a great week!
This mod will work on psp 1000, 2000 and 3000. As for the specific battery to use you will have to search ebay and use the dimensions I posted in the description to find one that will fit.
Great video! I still have one question, though. Couldn't you keep the cell inside of the original battery and just wire the two batteries in parallel? That would give you even higher capacity
Dimitris Loufakis If the cell inside the original battery were good quality then yes, but since the one I had was absolute crap with a high self discharge it would only drain both cells faster while not in use so I decided I didn't need the extra likely ~500mAh. The original cell was so bad that if I fully charged it and let it sit it would be dead within three days.
@@sjm4306 es correcto yo conecte en paralelo con una celda china de psp 3000, y me consumia energia en apagado, al quitarla me di cuenta que despues de dias el desgaste era minimo mucho menos.
GUYS VERY IMPORTANT THING!!! buttery must not have its own protection circuit. if u use old phone buttery cell brake off black plastic part and cutt of the protection circuit or solder wire direct on the cell. If u dont remove protection circuit it may catch on fire. im speaking from expiriance 😅.
Don't know if you will ever reply this but I'll ask anyway, how good was the battery itself? Did it had a high rate self discharge? How long was the playtime with it at maximum capacity?
Battery wasn't from a very high quality powerbank (it was a freebie from a conference) so self discharge was pretty high. I'd estimate letting the fully charged battery sit in a drawer would drain it in a month. However if fully charged and immediately played I got well over 10 hours of runtime on the psp with decent backlight brightness and speaker volume. I didn't time it exactly unfortunately but I'm confident enough in that estimate after a quite few charge/discharge cycles. It's been a few years since this video though and I've moved onto a ps vita as my daily driver so I'm sure the battery in this psp has aged quite badly by now.
@@sjm4306 damn 10 hours runtime is way higher than what I was expecting, do you still recommend doing this mod for the psp? I've always wanted to own one but i am quite concerned about finding good replacement batteries
I believe if you have a hacked psp with custom firmware you can go into the vsh menu and change which memory can be mounted over usb (though you have to be careful as you can potentially brick the psp if you mess with the wrong files).
26:30 wait, what is that seplugin that shows voltage on xmb you speak of? i cant seem to find this one. there is homebrew i was using during charging that shows voltage information since percentage is basically worthless information with these battery mods, and also during gameplay there is cwcheats seplugin which i actually use to see voltage during game as it shows that information in its menu too. but i want one just for xmb
what dimension is that lipo battery? 505573? so 5.0mm thick x 55mm width x 73mm length? Also you said 10mm max thickness so would 2 of those battery possibly fit to get 5000mah?
Is it really safe to use a 3.7v battery on the PSP which uses 3.6v? Electronics can be volatile you know and that battery is HUGE. You could also slip it inside like it was a UMD without removing the disc drive, but with a smaller battery.
The voltage written on the battery is the nominal voltage and not actually what they are charged up to (both terminate at ~4.2V). It's absolutely safe so long as they are properly insulated and use a protection circuit.
I don't know how you fit a 10mm thick battery inside I picked up a 3000mah battery and can't get a 7.7mm to squeeze in. I removed everything I could from the door and the UMD drive but can't get the door to close.
Hi, kinda late, but I have a question: does the orange light ever goes off when you mod the battery? I've just done mine with a Samsing Galaxy S4 battery, but the light didn't turn off. It reads as 100% in the menu, and the charger is cold, like it's not being used.
Probably the percent gauge needing to recalibrate after increasing the battery capacity. Give it a few charge cycles to see if it gets better. If not there's a work around on certain battery protection boards to solder pads to tell the psp the new capacity.
If a battery expands any amount during charging or use you have much bigger problems (pun unintended). Toss expanding batteries into a fireproof case/pouch and dispose of properly because they are a ticking hand grenade if you continue to use them. Healthy lipos will not expand, however ones that are at the end of their life and have been abused will produce hydrogen gas which is why they expand. Best case they will vent and the battery will just stop working, worst case they heat up enough to ignite the gas.
I've never owned a soldering gun before, should I attempt this mod or buy the extended battery pack? I have an original Sony battery but it doesn't last very lon btw I have a 2000
Wallkar Wallkar I haven't had any major problems besides the graphic indicator being off but then again I use a vsh plugin that displays a voltage and percentage overlay in the corner so I just use that to gauge remaining battery life. Since this video a commenter pointed out that the pads labelled A, B, and C are used to tell the psp different capacities and by referencing a chart I was able to short the correct pads to tell the psp I have a ~2500mAh battery.
hi bro, nice video.. i follow your tutorial and work perfectly. but my big question is why my psp still get 2 or 3 hours battery from 100%? i used HP notebook battery 4400mAh and only get 2 or 3 hour? can u explain why? or i need calibration the battery, then how? fyi i used my original psp battery circuit board who look different with your. thanks..
If you are using a used battery that is two years old or more then be aware that it might have lost capacity due to age and use depending on many factors such as temperature, charge/discharge cycles, discharge state, storage conditions, etc. Another thing is have you let the battery now in the psp run till it shuts off and then fully charge? This should calibrate the controller and also I've noticed since putting a 2,500mAh battery inside the psp 1,200mAh one that the psp still thinks it is the smaller capacity one. So I run it for 4 hours and the battery meter shows that it is almost empty but I am able to run it for another 10 or so with only 1 bar left. I've heard about a way of soldering some pads on some chinese battery boards that will tell the psp the correct battery capacity but have yet to confirm this for myself.
thanks for the answer, It may be true of your statement, bcause the weirdness happens on my psp, if I play with 50 or 60% battery left then I leave the psp for several hours, the battery will rise itself up to 95 to 100% (usage back to 2 to 3 hours). WTH this :D I suspect maybe the original 1200mAh circuit boards limit the mAh more, I do not have a spare battery for my tests. If there is a way to remove this limit please let me know, and create a nice video. Thanks.
Nope, the psp doesn't even realize the battery isn't oem and as the voltage is the same as the original battery everything operates as normal (just for much longer). The main difference is fully charging will just take longer than the stock battery.
With my 2500mAh battery I estimate I was conservatively getting at least 10 hours. So a 5000mAh battery should theoretically get at least 20 hours or so.
@@sjm4306 Given that 2500mah can give you AT LEAST 10 hours, is it safe to assume that the PSP batteries you can buy these days (aftermarket or original) have deteriorated cells in them due to ageing that's why they don't last as long?
The cheap aftermarket chinese batteries use tiny cells inside and who knows if they are actually new. The last "1200mAh" aftermarket battery I bought I estimate the cell inside was actually only less than 700mAh. As for original batteries, lipos are usually rated for 80% of their original capacity after 2 years if they are properly charge cycled and taken care of. Oem batteries are much older than that by now and likely sat in a drawer so their remaining capacity is probably only a fraction of the original if they work at all by now (gotta be super careful with swollen batteries which is a common failure mode).
Great video. Thank you. Just to let you know that the link for the battery is not working completely. It does open eBay,but it doesn't take me to the battery page. If you can refresh that link, that would be great. Thx in adv.
alphanate75 Thanks. Unfortunately the link is a general affiliate link and not one for the batteries. It is difficult linking to a specific battery because of how quickly stock changes from these Chinese sellers and there is often no easy way to search by battery size other than reading listing descriptions to find out dimensions. I get inundated with requests to constantly update links. So instead I posted the dimensions of the umd bay so that it would be easy enough to check if a battery would fit. I wish I could link the exact battery but I know as soon as I do within a week it would be sold out and I'd be back to square one.
The original battery protection board is used and the psp regulates the battery so this is no more dangerous than an oem battery so long as you insulate exposed wiring before closing it up.
I wanna ask since I tear down my old LG Nexus 4 phone and it's battery is still viable (it's a 8.0 watt hour, 3.8v, and 2030mAh to 2100mAh battery), if the watt hour matters for these. Looking online, the replacement batteries that people use for their PSP are 6.6 Wh (cameron sino brands).
The watt-hour rating of a battery is simply the battery nominal voltage multiplied by its capacity (so for your nexus battery it'd be 3.8v x 2.1Ah = 7.98Wh). Since you are replacing the psp's stock battery with a higher capacity one then even though the nominal voltage stays the same then of course the Wh rating increases.
planning to stick 1pc 18650 at the back of the psp 3000 using plastic battery holder for 18650 and double sided tape. drilling a small hole in battery cover and directly solder the wire in + and - terminal of the psp. 1 question? what is the chip use for? incase my 18650 drain, ill pull it out and charge it to a independent charger for 18650 and not thru psp inlet charger. NO need for chip right?
Roman Jr Asidera The chip is for protection, tells the psp the estimated capacity and most importantly is necessary. Without it the psp refuses to boot.
thanks for answering. My original battery have weird problem, even shes full charge, it sudden turn off, and cannot turn on unless you remove the battery and replace again and it will work again and turn off after a while again. that is why im planning not to use the chip cause i think something wrong in that chip
Roman Jr Asidera It sounds like the pins aren't connecting well and when it loses contact the psp shuts off. Either way replacement batteries are cheap to buy just for their circuit boards and you can replace the internal cell with a larger one like I did.
lol you made it much harder than need be. i buy battery, the li ion one as well which the size needed or wanted will be up to 2500mah max. Because yes beyond that it wont fit or be flush but you need correct ones. Even lesser ones like 2000mah imo is still decent especially for 2k 3k who only took 1200mah. Anyway thats all i need aside from tools, i dont extend the connection or none of this other nonsense. I mean youre in and out if quick enough like 5min. Also makes it easier if wires coming from battery are longer , youres came with the flat metal sticking out i get mine with red and black coming out the thin wire. Use the bootleg batteries casing and prop up the board with something so it connects, solder board and the new battery, but out whats needed from umd slot to make battery fit and remove everything then just some hot glue and put back together. All this can be done just popping off the battery cover and umd drive carefully. No need to take apart system or anything. I should make a video one day for fun. Easy mod and kinda fun. I sometimes ghetto rig a little bit but in the end comes out perfect so yeah
The disc mechanism definitely needs to be removed to fit the battery I cboose and while you may be able to get it out without taking out the door it'll be more difficult. Of course once the battery is installed the door can be reassembled and the mod looks stock from the outside.
Hi. Did the same thing on my son psp and it was working fine. I had to solder the chip to charging contacts because the battery cover broke during opening. Now my son took it to his boarding school and somehow got the battery disconnected. The chip is still attached to pcb and is giving orange blinking light when playing directly from the adaptor. My son will be back in 2 months. Is it ok to let it use directly from power. Or will it damage the chip or something if it not allraedy done. Will appreciate ur input. Thanks
It should be alright, just tell your son to keep an eye on the temperature around the battery while he is playing just in case it starts getting hot due to the battery shorting. Sounds like the psp just isn't detecting a voltage even though it detects the chip so it's giving a warning. If your son is comfortable, the safest thing would be to open it and wrap tape around the disconnected battery wires.
Thanks. Will ask him to do the same. He is ten years, never had the chance to play snes, gameboys but he likes them now. Thanks to your mod, my old psp got a new life. Hopefully I will resolder everything. Appreciate ur help.
Hi how to correct battery percentage info. There is still a lot of battery while the percentage display already shows 0%. Until the psp turns off for a moment, if left for a while then the percentage will go back up without charging. Please provide information...
Run the battery through a few charge/discharge cycles. If your donor protection pcb has solder jumpers you may have to experiment with them to set the correct capacity value. Otherwise this might be something you have to live with as the psp was never meant to have this large of a battery so the designers didn't implement a way to properly measure this long of a battery life. If you are able you might be able to program a homebrew plugin to compensate for this.
The original battery is of questionable origin (the battery was very cheap afterall) and probably very low capacity so I didnt want to risk it swelling or heating up just for a small increase in capacity.
Will this mod work on a original battery pcb? will it affect the new battery charging mechanism? since the pcb from the original battery still think it's connected to the original battery which is smaller in capacity instead the new bigger battery capacity thus it won't charge fully and will perform the same as the original battery?
It will work with the original battery PCB. Batteries charge via constant current then constant voltage not coulomb counting so it will always fully charge but the caveat is the battery level bar indicator will no longer be accurate (however the low battery warning will still work).
I kept this circuit board out of the original battery and used the tree slips to go directly in today original slot at the bottom I had a negative and a positive and when I connected up a negative and positive to the bottom of the circuit board I did not solve the it I just wrapped the way around it but I still thought it should have come on
I've tried this method on an original sony psp battery but it doesn't work. I check the continuity from the battery's negative side to the board negative side but no continuity. Any suggestion?
If it's in protection mode then you wont see continuity from battery board contact negative and cell negative. What's the cell voltage? If it's too low the protection circuitry may be in precharge trickle which can take a long time to get the voltage up to a level where it'll charge at a regular current.
@@sjm4306 yeah i think you're right cuz when i charge it, It's blinking orange light. I think it's in protection mode. I'll charge it for a several hours. Thanks for helping 😃
It's usually marked, but there are usually other telltale signs like the negative is usually on a large ground plane and any connection to nearby polarized caps can be used to deduce polarity. The easiest way though is if the battery is still attached to just measure the voltage with a multimeter to find the polarity.
@@sjm4306 um... Slight problem with that. The battery didn't explode per se, but it did expand to an amount that makes it clear the cell is dead. I looked at the cell and there is a positive label, but no negative label. Im making an assumption that the negative lead is the one further from the positive marker, I'm just not entirely sure and don't want to fry the board.
For the connection between psp and battery module, yes the negative is the far opposite pad from the positive and the middle is the digital battery identifier signal.
i just recently subscribed and i have a question. my psp wont charge! i even bought a new one and it still doesnt work but if i remove the battery and use the charger for power it turns on and if i put the battery it'll light orange but afterwards it will turn back to green. how to resolve that? please reply immediately.
@@sjm4306 yes a battery. i went to the technician and he said its the problem of all the psp 3000 models and that, so even if i buy a new battery again it would still not work. i mean, that isn't true right? thanks for replying by the way. nice channel got the notifications on.
I don't really understand what the technician means when he said its a problem with all 3000 models (I have a 3000 and it charges the battery perfectly). One thing to check that gave me a similar issue once is there are three contacts between the psp and battery: positive, battery data and negative. On one of my psps that stopped charging a good battery the middle contact in the battery was loose so I had to carefully open it and bend the metal fingers inwards a bit so it made better contact. It started working after that, since the psp needs to read the data from the battery to even charge or use it (sony's attempt I guess to prevent aftermarket batteries or to have different capacities which the psp could read to estimate remaining life).
sjm4306 i think what he meant is 3000 models has battery issues like that. thanks for the quick response. anyways do you have plans in your mind in making a portable ps2?
I've always wanted to make a portable ps2. I'd definitely want to get an early 7xxx model though that can be wired to an ide hdd so I could remove the optical drive completely.
Hasn't bloated yet (thank god), but runtime is only probably half of what it was when I made the video. The secret to preventing batteries from bloating is to partially charge them a bit every few months even if you don't use them (up to ~80%). They bloat because they deplete too far and when charged up from completely dead after a long time a side reaction that consumes the electrolyte to produce hydrogen gas occurs, permanently damaging the cell.
No problems as far as I can tell (maybe the battery may have degraded a tiny bit but it's hard to tell), I just used it over christmas break to replay some ys and it work great.
Hi. I just modded my psp2000 with 4850mha battery (i looted it from the broken phablet) and it has several problems. First, it keeps turning off by itself. It's OK when I stay in the XMB screen but when I run any game, it goes off by itself. Second, the PSP not showing the exact battery time. The battery time goes around from 0:30 to 7:30. And the charge percentage goes around from 70% to 100% when it's fully charged. Third, I can't turn it on without connect adapter to it. When I try to turn the PSP on, it doesn't working. I have to put the battery charge adapter to the PSP and it goes on. No problem without the adapter once it's turned on. I've checked the battery voltage and the output is about 4V when fully charged. Everything was perfect before the modding. I really can't find the reason of all these problems. Can you give me some advice? Thanks.
I would check your wiring and the pcb pin connections to the psp. Also if you used a chinese battery some of the boards have solder links to change the capacity reported to the psp.
I've looted the battery board from original PSP 2000 1200mha battery made by Sony. It's weird that when I mute its speaker then there's no problem. But when I turn the speaker on, it eventually goes off in any time. I couldn't solder the wires to the battery because the solder don't really stick to the board. The solder makes droplet shape and never stick to the board.
before i got cheap battery psp, only last for 1 hour. the i tried this use BN51 battery from xiaomi phone. its work but its still only last for 1 hour or less. is the way to recalibrate the battery ? i tried 2 different battery but still the same 1 hours both.
@@sjm4306 4900mAh on paper. Its 06/2020. Thanks sir. I will try recycle the charge. I will be happy if is can get 7-8 gaming hours. Or at least 6 hours.
Update my mod status. After 4 times charge 100% its still 1 hour last. But last night i left it overnight charge use power bank. Its still weird from 100% to 35% is fast drain, about 50 minutes but 35% - 18% already rocking 3 hours. I left on play game and still counting untill its 5%. So it is improvement? 😅
So supposedly you can set the capacity by shortening the A, B, C pads on these Chinese PCB donor boards. Do you know anything about that? Should be able to set it to 2500mAh. Someone said there is a drawing of how to set it on the back of the PCB?
It appears that yours doesnt have that (judging from the second you show the back side of the PCB) but there are D, G, C, R pads on the front... here is a picture of ones with A, B , C - i.imgur.com/SaPe7Bg.png . Supposedly then the capacity etc will show properly.... also if using a legit SONY donor board from a non working sony battery do you know if desoldering the PCB resets any eeprom counters on there? Because it has been shown that official batteries do count number of cycles, so if reusing same board for batteries over the years and counters get into thousands it will be wildly wrong estimates on battery power.... but by definition eeprom is non volatile... so probably not? So it may actually be way better to use Chinese donor boards where we can set our capacity. lastly... the protection circuitry is not on the PCB right? Its in the Li-po cell itself? When using these bought Lipo cells the protection circuitry can stay intact?
Andrei Passioukov Yeah mine has the ABC pads just under the chip and above the battery terminal. I might just solder one and see what it does. Didn't know OEM Sony batteries kept track of charge cycles but I guess that makes sense. Also protection is handled by the board and the cell is raw.
So if using another cell, most of them have built in protection in the cell (you can see wires going to a small chip and then from chip to the battery). Then you would have double protection? One in the PSP donor board, and one in the battery? Can that cause issues? For example this one - imgur.com/a/1CNcT As far as those pads, yeah I think none being shorted is default 1200Mah or whatever, then by shorting additional ones you add to that number, like 1200mAh + 1000mAh etc... some of these chinese boards have a diagram on the back of the PCB with the values.
Andrei Passioukov Having double protection shouldn't really make a difference, just one would happen to trip before the other and the standby drain might be slightly more. As for the ABC pads, I am almost absolutely sure all the clone batteries use the same exact chip with the same firmware so if we can find the pic with the settings we could use it for all boards.
i found it in someone webste "the labels where you can solder are B+ and B-, sometime it is called LD1 and LD2 but LD1 is the positive side generally." www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix-a-Psp-Battery/
nice mod. i did the very same thing to my psp 1000 phat 6 months ago. mine is slightly higher i have 10.000mAh, i put 2x 5000mAh taped together, because mine is the phat theres slightly more room inside when the UMD is removed. i managed to get hold of 2 very thin batteries, basically perform the same steps except me wiring two together before soldering. and your right about the battery timer too. its the chip on the board itself thats programmed by default with an average time reading for each 1200mAh battery on a full charge. i noticed when i also installed this 10.000mAh battery i was still only getting the same average reading around 8 hours use. but infact when i did a time test on it (leaving it on with all settings set to maximum until the battery drained) i got 36 hours and 18 minutes. im glad you also gave out the warning about these cheap chinese batteries with false capacity readings on them. the amount of people that get taken in by it (me included) is unreal. i ripped mine open too and my cell was even smaller than the one you pulled from your battery. they are most definitely fake and people should be made aware of these con artists. great video though.
Thanks! You should make a video showing off your psp battery mod. I had a feeling that the timer would be off and now that you confirm I can be sure of it. As for fake battery capacities so long as you know going into a purchase to expect 1/2 to 1/4 of the listed capacity and that it may or may not self detonate I think the benefits of getting cheap replacement psp batteries to tinker with is great especially since no oem ones are being made anymore. I really wonder how much more efficient the later psp models are compared to the phat since the stock batteries went from 1800mah to 1200mah and I don't recall many complaints about a drop in battery life.
sjm4306 later PSP models will require less power hence the drop in capacity. Having built in storage too and no UMD on the PSP go doesn't require the extra power as previous consoles. I'm sure it's the go that doesn't have a UMD?? And maybe the 3000. I don't touch newer models as they can't be flashed permanently like the phats and early 2000 models can. Normally when I mod them I don't make videos. Iv never seen the point to be honest. No disrespect intended. Iv just never thought of doing it. Iv also switched out the bog standard wifi receiver and used a more up to date flat ribbon receiver from a custom pc case so the console can access all bands. Mine would only connect to WEP routers and even then it wouldn't accept any passwords. So ripped sonys junk out and works great now. What would be a cool mod. I have a 258GB SSD drive which is slightly smaller than the original battery. As iv now got the battery mod in the UMD drive. I'd like to hook up this mini SSD in the battery compartment from the pro duo reader/writer internally. I'd like to. Doesn't mean I can. Haha. Still need to do some research on the pin lay outs. Voltages etc. Would be nice though. I'm not a person to install silly leds (anyone can do that) that to me can hardly be classed as a mod. I prefer the hardcore mods. Things not every can do. The unique ones. Kids play with LEDs there basically toys so not worth anything to me. Have you done anything else to your PSP since this video?
BASS-man Modder I think I read somewhere that now it's possible to permaflash nearly every psp model in some way. Anyway I totally agree with not caring for adding a million leds and calling it a mod. As for your WiFi mod I haven't seen that before, you should post a video. Since doing this mod I haven't had much time to do anything else but I've seen people replace the m2 slot of the go with a microsd slot which I wanna give a try but not sure since go's are getting rare and I might wanna just leave mine stock since I already have 32gb total and that's good enough for me. As for future mods I wanna try, I'm learning fpga's so I wanna make a board that grabs the 24bit rgb lcd data and converts to hdmi or vga so I can do digital video out. But that's gonna take awhile since fpga's have a steep learning curve and I'm just learning in my free time.
sjm4306 sounds like a cool idea. Not sure if the PSP could cope with that though? CPU and ram in them i don't imagine is capable of handling that. But hay I don't know. Never say never I say. I can't disagree as iv not done it or seen it so why not. The closest I have in terms of ideas for the display. I have a 7" tablet here. The LCDs ribbon is the exact same size as the PSP 1000 ribbon. As in width. And the backlight is the same size too. Only the backlight is at the opposite end of the screen on the tablet. I'd like to try and somehow mount this screen to the PSPs mobo. But that said to play it I'd also have to completely remap the Dpads etc. That's all that's stopping me trying. I can't be bothered doing it. Lol. The wifi ribbon I used was from a aero cool strike x pc case. If you look at a phone that has wireless charge or an NFC pad. It's a slim chip encased in a very thin men brain with 2 contacts at the end. That's stick on one side to hold it to the battery. The wifi card in this case was the same. Only smaller. It was stuck just under top brace beside the hotswap bay. A wifi card normally has 2 connectors that you simply push on. Small gold ones. This one fitted the PSP perfectly and runs from the same internal wifi cable. I won't lie it wasn't a straight forward install. I did have some teething issues replacing the DPad again and closing the console up. If I get time and if I can be bothered stripping the PSP again I'll do a video of it. Not sure I'm up to having another fight with it to get it closed again haha. As for memory. The PSPs firmware has a maximum capacity of 1TB. You can buy a dual MicroSD pro duo adapter card and put 2x 256gb cards in it. Mine at the moment has 1x 64GB and 1x 128GB cards (for now) i put the new 6.35 Pro-C firmware on my PSP 2 days ago. I can now access psn again. Until Sony find a way to block again anyway.
BASS-man Modder I recently upgraded my psp to 64gb and installed the categories plugin so I can sort all my psp, ps1, and emulator/homebrew into folders. As for my lcd idea the great thing about adding an fpga to decode the lcd data and convert to hdmi or vga is that the fpga does all of the heavy lifting, all the psp has to worry about is outputting the lcd image as normal so from the psp side nothing changes. I have a low end fpga dev board with a spartan 3e and so far I've programmed a vga driver and bidirectional frame buffer but I don't have nearly enough macro cells for a full buffer so hopefully the timing will allow me to get away with line buffering or I'll have to get a bigger fpga. Still learning but I have a long way to go.
I added the measurements a few months ago after the update text: "As for selecting a battery, by my measurements the maximum size is around 65mmx73mmx10mm inside the umd bay so stay under those dimensions or the door wont shut." I wish I could bold text in the description to make it stand out more.
Question. I am modding this on a 3000, and i got one issue here. The UMD detector is still in place so if i put the battery there, psp wont boot properly. It shows blank screen with a loading icon on bottom right instead. How do i fix this? I dont think the detector is removable.
Here's a tutorial to install the cfw to hack the psp first off: wololo.net/installing-pro-cfw-on-a-psp-3000-psp-brite/ Then you'll have to install and enable a plugin called noUMD (a google search will get you the file and I believe I even made a quick follow up video after this one to show generally how to use the plugin). In general to access the vsh menu I believe from the home menu you press either start or select (I forget which one, haven't used my psps in awhile since I upgraded to a vita). From there you can select installed plugins and turn them on or off.
What did you ended up doing?
Oops really delayed reply, youtube didnt notify me of your reply. Yes you would just solder little wires onto the pads marked + and -. Just be quick since the plastic tends to melt.
@@sjm4306 how is it holding up now? I am just looking to get into soldering, circuitry, mods (been disassembling and doing basic PSP fixes, part for part, for a while) and this is just what I was craving after. Thanks!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video.
if the NoUMD mod is not installed will it cause an error when the console is booted up?
Surely the cleanest looking psp battery mod i've ever seen
You could get three battery packs and utilize the space in the old battery as well with a balanced charger module added. I don't think it matters to the board to get even more hours out of it.
Thank you for the great video. You inspired me to do the same mod to my psp 2004 using a Playstation Vita 2210 mah battery. Incredible battery life gain. No more Chinese crappy psp batteries.
Old video, I know, but it has inspired me to do the same. I found a 3000mah battery from an LG G2 that I'd saved. It fits perfect.
Glad it helped and it's always good to hear success stories for these mods!
How long hold the battery if you play games?
Very good use of the extra space you get when you hack your psp as you don't need the umd drive. ;)
umd drive is cool tho
Nope runs like a dream, infact I played some ys yesterday for about 2 hours with no drop in the battery display bars.
what battery did you use and how is it now?
I used a 2500mAh lipo battery I pulled from a battery bank. I made this video years ago and put hundreds and hundreds of hours of play on the battery so it's pretty weak now compared to when I first installed it so it could use a replacement now. Lipos unfortunately have a limited lifespan even if you take care of them.
Honestly, since i don't want to mod my psp, with such a great battery that you found, i would just create a holder for the battery on top of the door of the optical drive to keep the OP. I think this is a great fit battery!
Yeah you could totally do that, in the hayday of the psp several manufacturers released external battery packs like you've described.

Great Video! Just got into psp-gaming and it's potential. Defenetly going to mod mine like this.
Other than installing cfw, this is the most useful mod I've done to the psp so far.
Great video btw. This is really helpful that I might consider doing this modding on my own. I recently bought a used PSP and I noticed that I have the same problem as 29:13 . I found out that there's a plugin called noumd. Tried it and never looked back.

hey, great video man. wanted to ask - is there any battery drain on standby? and did you have to install the NoUMD mod?
Yes to noumd and yes to standby drain (the "sleep" mode of course still consumes power, you need to fully power down the psp by holding the power switch for a few seconds to stop drawing power from the battery).

Nice tutorial, tho the ebay link is not working anymore. 😃
What's the size of the 2500mah polymer battery : H x W x L ?
So, for a recap:
My estimated max room to play with when coming up with a battery for the back (if you want to take up all the room):
Height: 6mm would be ideal.
=======================
The super, TL;DR version, going by Height x Width x Length (maximum range and should fit):
For only UMD Section: 6mm x 65mm x 70mm.
Best fucking video on psp batt mod, thank you. I had the same idea in my head and you confirmed it.

Hi! I hope you can see this comment. I have some questions. Using a battery with 3.8v would minimize the lifespan of the psp? And, the circuit board of the psp battery differs from model to model? Like, a 1800mAh is different from the circuit of a battery with 2000mAh?
I'm planning to install a galaxy s4 battery in my psp, but i don't have so much knowledge in electrical area :)
Btw, nice video!
Thanks for the fast answer hahaha when my battery starts to die, i will mod mine. Thanks, it was very enlightening
great video, you took your time to explain and that helped me understand this quite a lot.
That's awesome, glad you were able to fix it!
sjm4306 is this mod the same on PSP 1000? I wanna try it.
Pretty much, but the method to remove the umd door is probably different. Note I havent done it myself but I dont see why it wouldnt work.
Great video
Thanks! I show a lot of love for modding nintendo systems so I though I would do a video on my psp for once.
sjm4306 Yeah it worked out well

10h on a 18650 3100 mah cell and i can charge with the regular psp charger,6h with 3 AA but i need a separate charger.
i have too in plan a 2 cell 18650 parallel holder.
Thank you! Very useful video! Tell me, please, what is the size of the cavity under UMD? I want to order the most suitable battery for the size.
By my measurements the maximum size is around 65mmx73mmx10mm so stay under those dimensions or the door wont shut.
Thank you!
Oh I just meant to fully charge and run down to like 30% a few times, this "cycles" old batteries and gets them working better
@@sjm4306 ooh i get it, thank you ! :)
One question my dude, this also works for the psp 1000? Thanks a lot
Yep, will work with any model psp
This is a clean mod!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
i watch many videos for 2 or 3 days on how to remove umd door
and this is the best i can found wich is tutorial on how to Mod psp battery
DAMN its realy piss me of 7:30
Great idea 😉 Maybe a stupid question from a battery noob: would charging while using the psp be safe or should I only use while not charging? and whatever the answer is, would it be the same with a li-ion battery from a smartphone?
champen22 The psp was designed to be able to use while charging and simply changing the battery wouldn't affect this. The only bit of caution I would advise is after changing the battery, during the first few recharges keep an eye on the psp and every once and awhile touch the back to make sure it isn't getting hot. Once you've put a few recharges in and everything is fine then you can be rest assured that the battery will behave.
sjm4306 Thanks for the answer. That gives good meaning.
This PSP Nice Works Model Cipl Flasher PRO-B (Works 1000 and 2000)
I did this but I had to bridge my charging fuse because my psp was not starting I put in a 1400 milliamphour li-ion battery from a phone I had
will try this soon when my battery is no longer functioning.. but for now ill just keep it..
That was a very good answer, it completely covered me. Thank you very much
@@sjm4306 es correcto yo conecte en paralelo con una celda china de psp 3000, y me consumia energia en apagado, al quitarla me di cuenta que despues de dias el desgaste era minimo mucho menos.
28:33 this made me laugh haha who knows how long it was shitting, sitting on the shelf
Pohtato potahto lol
Love your videos dude , you motivated to get me back into the modding scene. Thanks man!
Absolutely worth it in combination with running cfw and adding a large micro sd card to load games from.
Great video, good job!
Does this psp still work?
Awesome video btw!
Yep still works but the battery has probably lost some of its capacity given its age and the number of charge cycles I put on it.
@@sjm4306
Good to know
Thanks very much for the fast reply and btw your other videos are really cool too :)
hello like
Your video motivated me to dust it off one question
without memory stick does the pc recognize the zero drive /0?
I believe if you have a hacked psp with custom firmware you can go into the vsh menu and change which memory can be mounted over usb (though you have to be careful as you can potentially brick the psp if you mess with the wrong files).
@@sjm4306 Thanks for answering a question not related to batteries, you are very nice. SUB+
What wire did you use plz answer
26:30 wait, what is that seplugin that shows voltage on xmb you speak of? i cant seem to find this one. there is homebrew i was using during charging that shows voltage information since percentage is basically worthless information with these battery mods, and also during gameplay there is cwcheats seplugin which i actually use to see voltage during game as it shows that information in its menu too. but i want one just for xmb
PSP Hud www.psx-place.com/resources/hud-2-02.214/
what dimension is that lipo battery? 505573? so 5.0mm thick x 55mm width x 73mm length? Also you said 10mm max thickness so would 2 of those battery possibly fit to get 5000mah?
Is it really safe to use a 3.7v battery on the PSP which uses 3.6v? Electronics can be volatile you know and that battery is HUGE. You could also slip it inside like it was a UMD without removing the disc drive, but with a smaller battery.
The voltage written on the battery is the nominal voltage and not actually what they are charged up to (both terminate at ~4.2V). It's absolutely safe so long as they are properly insulated and use a protection circuit.
Thank you!
Have you tested to see how long the battery will last yet?
I don't know how you fit a 10mm thick battery inside I picked up a 3000mah battery and can't get a 7.7mm to squeeze in. I removed everything I could from the door and the UMD drive but can't get the door to close.
Hi, kinda late, but I have a question: does the orange light ever goes off when you mod the battery? I've just done mine with a Samsing Galaxy S4 battery, but the light didn't turn off. It reads as 100% in the menu, and the charger is cold, like it's not being used.
mine is like that too unfortunately
@@renatinhoss I've waited for one more hour and the light indeed goes off. Everything seems to be working fine!
Probably the percent gauge needing to recalibrate after increasing the battery capacity. Give it a few charge cycles to see if it gets better. If not there's a work around on certain battery protection boards to solder pads to tell the psp the new capacity.
Only issue I see with using a battery that barely fits is that if it expands a bit while charging it could possibly go galaxy note 7
I have an original Sony battery but it doesn't last very lon btw I have a 2000
adam So long as you are careful soldering the battery it really isn't difficult.
Просто руки жопы, поставил на 2к, отлично работает,не выключается, работает больше,7 часов игры, показатель может врать лишь и все
hi bro, nice video..
i follow your tutorial and work perfectly. but my big question is why my psp still get 2 or 3 hours battery from 100%?
i used HP notebook battery 4400mAh and only get 2 or 3 hour? can u explain why? or i need calibration the battery, then how?
fyi i used my original psp battery circuit board who look different with your.
I've heard about a way of soldering some pads on some chinese battery boards that will tell the psp the correct battery capacity but have yet to confirm this for myself.
thanks for the answer,
It may be true of your statement, bcause the weirdness happens on my psp, if I play with 50 or 60% battery left then I leave the psp for several hours, the battery will rise itself up to 95 to 100% (usage back to 2 to 3 hours). WTH this :D
I suspect maybe the original 1200mAh circuit boards limit the mAh more, I do not have a spare battery for my tests. If there is a way to remove this limit please let me know, and create a nice video.
Thanks.
Is there any long term side effects to this? Will it damage the PSP in the long run?
Nope, the psp doesn't even realize the battery isn't oem and as the voltage is the same as the original battery everything operates as normal (just for much longer). The main difference is fully charging will just take longer than the stock battery.
@@sjm4306 how long of continuous gaming can do you on that modded battery? I was thinking of putting in a 5000mah one on my PSP lol
Oem batteries are much older than that by now and likely sat in a drawer so their remaining capacity is probably only a fraction of the original if they work at all by now (gotta be super careful with swollen batteries which is a common failure mode).
a quick question. The battery you used, is it a Li-ion or Li-po cell battery?
Lipo (though either will work, generally there's more of a variety of lipo sizes so it's easier to find one in the right size)

I wish I could link the exact battery but I know as soon as I do within a week it would be sold out and I'd be back to square one.
how would that battery hold up in an airplane or for overcharging? would it overheat and explode like some android phone's batteries?
I tend to make things much more difficult than necessary at 3am in the morning lol
Are you only removing the disc and the disc door just to make room for you no battery or is it necessary for Success
The disc mechanism definitely needs to be removed to fit the battery I cboose and while you may be able to get it out without taking out the door it'll be more difficult. Of course once the battery is installed the door can be reassembled and the mod looks stock from the outside.
The listing in the link is no longer available. Is there another listing of the battery?
I know I'm late but I have a question? Can I use any wire for the connection between the board and battery? Thank you! :)
I would used wire no thinner than about 18-20 gauge.
@@sjm4306 Yes! :D thank you for the reply, I can't start doing this because I have no idea of what wire to use. :)

Thank you sir again for the reply. :)
why don't you wire both batteries in parallel? more capacity this way, even though their capacity is a bit different
The original battery is of questionable origin (the battery was very cheap afterall) and probably very low capacity so I didnt want to risk it swelling or heating up just for a small increase in capacity.
nice and useful video! thanks
Nicola Usai Thanks for watching!
Sweet! thank you so much for the detailed info, I'm gonna do this as soon as my donor battery come thru my mail
After nearly 2 years.... Is it still good?
Yep, still use it. Maybe battery life has decreased a bit but I put a good number of hours into replaying ys over xmas break and it held up just fine.
I kept this circuit board out of the original battery and used the tree slips to go directly in today original slot at the bottom I had a negative and a positive and when I connected up a negative and positive to the bottom of the circuit board I did not solve the it I just wrapped the way around it but I still thought it should have come on
Is the third data pin between the battery board and the psp properly connected?
Thanks for helping 😃
how do you tell which is positive and which is negative on a board? Ive got the s110 battery board and i dont know what side is positive or not
It's usually marked, but there are usually other telltale signs like the negative is usually on a large ground plane and any connection to nearby polarized caps can be used to deduce polarity.

My replacement 1000 battery gave up after 3 months. Would there be any major differences to doing this vs. your 2000?
If you buy the raw cells from a reputable seller/site like batteryspace you will get much more bang for your buck.
"To the Interwebs!"
Any update on this? Is the battery still okay or did it bloat or something like that?
Hasn't bloated yet (thank god), but runtime is only probably half of what it was when I made the video. The secret to preventing batteries from bloating is to partially charge them a bit every few months even if you don't use them (up to ~80%). They bloat because they deplete too far and when charged up from completely dead after a long time a side reaction that consumes the electrolyte to produce hydrogen gas occurs, permanently damaging the cell.
@@sjm4306 Thanks for the update and the tip :)
Any issues a year later?
I totally wana try this out now. Got two spare psp, more so Gonna do this to my psp 3000
It'd be a lot easier to figure out if you could link a picture of your wiring.
before i got cheap battery psp, only last for 1 hour.
the i tried this use BN51 battery from xiaomi phone.
its work but its still only last for 1 hour or less. is the way to recalibrate the battery ?
i tried 2 different battery but still the same 1 hours both.
Charge cycle it a few times to see if that helps. What's the BN51 capacity and how old is the battery?
@@sjm4306 4900mAh on paper. Its 06/2020.
Thanks sir. I will try recycle the charge. I will be happy if is can get 7-8 gaming hours. Or at least 6 hours.
Hmm, with that capacity you should be getting way more runtime!
Hey dude, does this mod work with the original battery chip?
Ata Yurt Yep, will work with any battery that the psp recognizes.
Thanks a lot! Cheers
can some one pls send me a link of li po battery that fits a psp i cant find one like fr
Would it be possible to keep the original battery and add additional one to have even more mah's?
Yes, but make sure the voltages are the same before soldering them in parallel or one will try to rapidly charge the other and could ignite.
@@sjm4306 Thank you. Wasn't sure if the battery control circuitry could handle that.
So supposedly you can set the capacity by shortening the A, B, C pads on these Chinese PCB donor boards. Do you know anything about that? Should be able to set it to 2500mAh. Someone said there is a drawing of how to set it on the back of the PCB?
Andrei Passioukov I'll have to check that and get back to you.
For example this one - imgur.com/a/1CNcT
As far as those pads, yeah I think none being shorted is default 1200Mah or whatever, then by shorting additional ones you add to that number, like 1200mAh + 1000mAh etc... some of these chinese boards have a diagram on the back of the PCB with the values.
Andrei Passioukov Having double protection shouldn't really make a difference, just one would happen to trip before the other and the standby drain might be slightly more. As for the ABC pads, I am almost absolutely sure all the clone batteries use the same exact chip with the same firmware so if we can find the pic with the settings we could use it for all boards.
i have green board battery board, and its say LD1 and LD2
there is no B- or B+
wich is + or - for LD1 and LD2?
i found it in someone webste "the labels where you can solder are B+ and B-, sometime it is called LD1 and LD2 but LD1 is the positive side generally."
www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Fix-a-Psp-Battery/
a question I need to get the pcb from psp street? because it is not equal to the normal psp it is connected directly to the board
Yeah in that case you'd need to get the protection board from the psp street's internal battery.
nice mod. i did the very same thing to my psp 1000 phat 6 months ago. mine is slightly higher i have 10.000mAh, i put 2x 5000mAh taped together, because mine is the phat theres slightly more room inside when the UMD is removed. i managed to get hold of 2 very thin batteries, basically perform the same steps except me wiring two together before soldering. and your right about the battery timer too. its the chip on the board itself thats programmed by default with an average time reading for each 1200mAh battery on a full charge. i noticed when i also installed this 10.000mAh battery i was still only getting the same average reading around 8 hours use. but infact when i did a time test on it (leaving it on with all settings set to maximum until the battery drained) i got 36 hours and 18 minutes. im glad you also gave out the warning about these cheap chinese batteries with false capacity readings on them. the amount of people that get taken in by it (me included) is unreal. i ripped mine open too and my cell was even smaller than the one you pulled from your battery. they are most definitely fake and people should be made aware of these con artists. great video though.
Can you please just add the measurements for the battery in the description? Trying to find your comment is impossible with youtube comment system...
If you are running custom firmware just disable the switch in the vsh menu.
@@sjm4306 which one is it? I am new to this
Here's a tutorial to install the cfw to hack the psp first off: wololo.net/installing-pro-cfw-on-a-psp-3000-psp-brite/
Then you'll have to install and enable a plugin called noUMD (a google search will get you the file and I believe I even made a quick follow up video after this one to show generally how to use the plugin). In general to access the vsh menu I believe from the home menu you press either start or select (I forget which one, haven't used my psps in awhile since I upgraded to a vita). From there you can select installed plugins and turn them on or off.
@@sjm4306 i already got cfw. Im just missing the noumd. Cheers mate
