Frank, you made a great choice buying the 2016 Colorado! I had a 2016 GMC Canyon crew cab short box. I bought it new in the spring of 2016 and it was a trouble free truck for the three years I owned it. I did have a reflash and update done to the TCM. After 3 years I traded that GMC for my ZR2. I have a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT. 5.3 engine, 8 speed transmission. I got it used with a little over 62K miles on it in May of 2020. I noticed soon after bringing it home that it had a hard shift between 1st and 2nd, and would have trouble downshifting between the same gears. At that time it still had the factory Good Year 275/55/20 tires on it. In January I put a small 4" lift on it, and 295/60/20 Nitto tires on it and the hard shifting has almost disappeared. It still does it when the truck is cold, but not nearly as often as it did when its warm. It also doesn't have any issue downshifting now. My transmission temp runs around 165-170°f. My 2019 has the shudder after about 4k. A bulletin came out to have the dealership flush it. I think dealerships absolutely suck so I did my own research and found out that the new oil is Mobil 1 LV. I did it myself and a couple of times to be sure to get all the old stuff out. 22k later and the sudder is still gone.
That's nuts! The dealership should have performed that fluid swap for you. I had mine done one week into ownership by the dealer. Please watch my part 2 of transmission issues. I have a new perspective on all of this.
I have under 2000 miles on my 2020 GMC Canyon and am noticing some hard down shifting but mostly when cold after two or three minutes is better not bad enough to do anything about at this point also have the 3.6 6 cyl and no issues so far except for a gas level sensor !
I had some issues with my transmission. Over time, I believe the learning function adapted to my driving style. That and my reinstall of the original tires and rims helped. Give your truck a bit more time to learn your driving style. It may sort itself out. I've had zero other issues with my truck. I like the 3.6, it's a great engine! You might want to get that low fuel light checked out though. Lots of electronics on any new vehicle.
I own a 2020 colorado buy it new does the same thing especially when is cold but I can hear the transmission fluid back and forth almost sounds like water
That's funny, original tires and rims and bingo! I've got michelins on my 2018 Sierra 4x4 and it did have shuddering problems. Dealer changed fluid and new upgrade..which so far has solved the condition. I may replace the torque converter soon before warranty is up a 60K because that is the real problem I hear. At 55K now.
I had transmission problems with my 2018 Chevy colorado zr2 and my 2020 Chevrolet colorado zr2; I was so tired of dealing with the dealerships that I got rid of of both trucks and will never buy Chevy or gmc products again.
I'm sorry to hear that. I had a 6 speed in my GMC Canyon and the 8 speed in my Colorado ZR2. Once I had the fluid flush and the truck learned my driving style it was great! I have a 2018 F150 now and it's a really good truck. There is the "slip bump" from the drive shaft that I'm going to get sorted out. Otherwise it's a good truck.
I'm having a issue with my 2022 Z71Colorado and it seems to of started when the cold weather arrived no issue in the summer. I only have 3000 miles on it. My issue sounds the same as your issue's.
Bring it to the dealer. There have been a few service bulletins and some other remedies since I bought my truck. The fluid swap fixed my truck. The torque converter is another issues that could be addressed. In any event, use your warranty to get satisfaction. The ZR2 is an amazing truck and once GM sorts out the 8 speed transmission issues, it will be more so. Goodluck and I hope you get your truck sorted out as I did. 👍👍
Yes this issue is very common. Also in 10 speed. My 2019 1500 denali is in shop right now for same problem. Except it actually left me stranded and went into limp mode throwing transmission codes. Same problems... Slipping clunking hard shifting w low acceleration between 1st n 3rd. Under 30k miles on mine
I wasn't aware that the 10 speed had issues as well. Though it would seem logical that with more gears and more electronic controls it may well have similar issues to the 8 speeds. Did you get to the root of the problems with your transmission? I'd be interested to know. I have a 10 speed transmission in my 2019 Mustang GT. It's been very good. So far. Hope you get your transmission issues sorted out.
The trans computer has to adapt to the trans and the drivers habits. Also, tire circumference is part of this adaptive learning. It takes so long to adapt, that I never reset it after a rebuild. This way it can adapt much more quickly and the customer is happier.
That makes sense. My truck started to act up when I put the slightly smaller tires on it. Since I swapped back the original ones, its been very good. Thanks for the information, cheers!
Hi, I'm guessing since posting this video you have gone through another winter and have cycled through summer to winter back to summer tires - did you see the same issue when on the winter tires? I'm currently looking at a 2021 Colorado Z71, and from what I've read there has been issues in the past with the transmission fluid needing to be flushed out and replaced with a new version, but I think they now come from the factory with the new fluid. Would you still recommend a Colorado? thanks!
Hi, yes I've driven my truck another season. I didn't use the winter tires the next winter. They were worn and I used the original tires and rims. Once I had the fliud flushed and went to the original tires, I had no issues with the transmission or truck at all. The Colorado has been and was a great truck for me. The initial issue I had was resolved and as far as I know the new fluid is what is factory fill on these trucks. I recently sold my truck. Not because I didn't like it, but due the re sale values being so high due to a shortage of new vehicles. I actually got quite a bit over what I paid for my truck! I couldn't find a new ZR2 to replace it at this time. But I would absolutely buy another Colorado or Canyon at some point in the future. These are great "bang for the buck" trucks! My truck had zero other issues once the transmission fluid was sorted out. Some other owners are not as satisfied as I was though. Check your new truck out and take it for an extended test drive. Always do your due diligence whenever you are buying any vehicle. Cheers!
I’d hold off on buying any gm truck. They obviously aren’t fixing the known problem which has been going on for years!! That is ridiculous! I had one and know how bad it was. You don’t want to be stuck with a pos. Wait until they come out with the new 4th gen Tacoma and next generation Colorado if you can. I’d trust Toyota over gm any day of the week.
@@pagodad2036 Originally I would have agreed but after researching all the mid size trucks, even the Tacoma had a similar transmission shudder when the 3rd generation was released. They also had a major problem with the frames rusting and had a recall for it (but only after a class action law suit I think). It really seems like they're all pretty much the same, each has their own issues especially when its a new release.
The transmission in my 2020 canyon rides like I’m pulling a trailer , and at times will shudder so bad my change will rattle in my tray. Totally sick of sending it back to dealer only to be treated like I don’t know what I’m talking about! Will be moving on from American car makers for good!
One would think that after making that transmission for so many years, that somehow they would have figured out why they shift so badly. Yet this is not the case. I can't blame you for giving up and going to a foreign manufacturer. You might have better experiences. 👍👍
The transmission has an issue. They put in the wrong transmission fluid. I had the issue but I didn’t trust the dealership to do a complete flush, clean and fill with the right fluid and additive. Extremely talented friend of mine turned my shift-stuttering hunk of metal into a smooth shifting machine like it was just off the showroom floor.
I'm glad you had a good result with your truck! I let the dealership do my truck. They did a great job and my truck performed very well after the transmission fluid change. 👍
My 2020 zr2 tourqe converter was replaced at 8k miles. It kept hunting at 55 to 60 mph and had a vibration and would slip and hesitate on the 1,2 shift. Truck was down 30 days.
I had the hunting at 55 to 60 mph too. Slipping at 1st gear too. The new fluid fixed mine. Never had a problem with it since. The torque converter was an issue for some 2017 and up model year trucks. Seems like they still haven't addressed that issue in the newer trucks.
The transmission is a adapted learn ,and most of the issues are software, or computer design flaws , the engineers at GM aren't computer savvy, as far as I know , the mechanics of a modern automatic transmission are spot on but like I said earlier, the computers leave a Lot to be desired, they're not fast enough for real world driving on real roads for every situation, 8 , 9, 10 speeds...Hell bring back the 2 speed Powerglide 😀
The old GM transmissions where very good! The THM 350 and 400, and yes even the old Powerglides too! I've heard the reason you mentioned as a probable cause of some transmission issues. There are so many inputs going to the TCM that it gets "confused" and acts up sometimes. It's really too bad, there are great 8 speed transmissions being offered by other manufacturers.
It’s not the software. You’ve got to be kidding me. The software controls the electronics of the vehicle and gathering data. The engine and transmission still function as a combustion engine. The transmission has an issue. They put in the wrong transmission fluid. I had the issue but I didn’t trust the dealership to do a complete flush, clean and fill with the right fluid and additive. Extremely talented friend of mine turned my shift-stuttering hunk of metal into a smooth shifting machine like it was just off the showroom floor
I had a issue, they changed the trans fluid and the issue went away. They told me if any other problems bring it back and they will change the converter.
Then you did better than I did with my truck. I had the fluid change. But, when I had the subsequent issues, I was told that there is no repair and to live with it. Fortunately, since I put the original rims/ tires back on, it's been performing very well.
I have a 2017 GMC Canyon AllTerrain and it’s been in the dealership for hard 2nd gear up shift. Plus some clunking when cold. They’ve replaced the valve body in it once. Took it in on Friday 10/16/2020 for them to do something about it as it’s doing it again. They couldn’t replicate the problem and I told them they need to drive it around town and do my daily driving. It needs to warm up before it starts doing it. Plus I mentioned that it does it about 85% of the time, sometimes it doesn’t do it. It really bugging me now because I’ve only had it a few months. I got it with 23,000 miles on it and it has 28,000 now. I love the truck, but this transmission issue is under warranty and a lifetime warranty through the place I bought it. GM dealership is doing it under the bumper to bumper warranty which I managed to get it in 3 days before that part of the warranty ran out. It still has the stock wheels and tires with good tread. Any help? 😁
There certainly seems to be something going on with the transmission in your truck. Since you have warranty, keep at it. I've not encountered with my truck, the scenario that you have with your truck. I hope you find satisfaction getting that issue sorted out.
My 2019 does this almost every time I leave for work. Just once, then not again until the next morning. Almost two years and it's still the same. Fluid change didn't change it at all. It's just the way of the world.
I own a 2020 colorado 3.6 8 speed transmission and I have been having problems with shifting especially when is cold also notice the sound of liquid goin back and forth like water should I take it to the dealer it has 14k miles right now
I would bring it in to have the service department check out the transmission and definitely the water sloshing sound. The transmission may need the fliud swap performed, if you haven't already had it done. The water sloshing sound could be a few different things depending on where you hear the sound. Could be a plugged door drain, or something to do with the HVAC system. Get that checked out for sure!
@@mmaxon888 the delayed shift is possible. My truck only does that when it's very cold outside. Then it'll hold a lower gear until the truck warms up a bit. I believe that is programmed into the TCM. Otherwise when it's warmer my truck shifts as I expect.
Sadly mine 19 Silverado with the 8 speed started to shutter when you put it in reverse and put it back in drive it shuttered bad. Thought the trans fell lmao. Has happened twice to me in the past 3 days already...
That does not sound good at all! If you have warranty on the powertrain, get your truck to a dealer that you trust. You might be having issues with any number of components of the transmission. I hope you get that sorted out soon.
They are the Luverne mud flaps. I purchased them through a local GM dealers parts department. I have a quick video of the installation of the mud flaps.
My ZR2 was a fun truck. The fluid swap fixed my issues. I really enjoyed driving my truck and had no other major issues with it. I can say that GM did build a fun to drive truck that is very capable. I'm hoping the next generation ZR2 is equally as satisfying. Time will tell. 👍
That is correct. In the U.S. there is a class action ongoing lawsuit related to this transmission. Not sure how it's progressing. However, I'm in Canada and not eligible for inclusion in that lawsuit.
Im sorry to sound like a troll but how is it a great truck if you’ve had this much transmission trouble and there are thousands of complaints for the same thing. And now there is a lawsuit going on. A proper operating transmission is a major component to a vehicle. This is unacceptable for gm to treat their customers this way. I was a chevy fanboy for years but had to switch brands because there quality is horrible. And I really like the new Colorado zr2 trucks and would like to get one but im hate to say it but gm will not get anymore of my business.
I appreciate your comments. You raise a few points that may be worthy of meerit. Since I've reinstalled the original tires and rims I haven't had any problems with the transmission. Yes, that is peculiar. Mine initially had the shudder. Within the first week of ownership, that was sorted out. Otherwise, I have had no problems with my truck. Not one. Now, seemingly the only one issue I had, is now a non issue. The truck has never been in overnight for service, nor has it left me walking home. I haven't had any engine issues, or suspension issues, or any interior/exterior cosmetics issues. I simply can not explain what caused the initial problems that I mentioned in my first part video. I can only say that those issues are no longer present. It actually is a good truck. I'm going on almost two years of ownership and have only done routine oil changes and maintenance, with the exception of the transmission fluid swap. The longer term quality will remain to be seen. So far, it's good.
I have a 2020 colorado z71 8 speed and when I get to a stop sign it downshift hard like it slips. But if I come to a fast stop it won't happen but I did find that it downshift harder when its cold then when it hot it won't do it that often or sometimes it just doesn't slip. Dealer said there's nothing they can do. Idk what I should do?
I had similar issues with my truck when I was new. The truck has approximately 20,000 miles (29,000 kms), and as I mentioned in my video, it is performing as it should. Maybe give your truck time to fully learn your driving style. Mine is seemly is doing what it should without any issues. And I am puzzled. Pleased, buy puzzled.
@@lilredcrvtt I've got a 2019, bought brand new, that has had a couple weird shifts here and there but nothing serious. Has 58000 on it now. No issues, other than GM's programming of how it should act sometimes.
I agree. However the overall diameter of the tire was slightly less than the original size. I'm not certain, but that might have contributed to some of the shifting issues. I've had no problems since I went back to the original rim/tire combination.
Mine has had zero issues since I went back to the stock tires. If you have warranty, get your truck to a dealership and get them to do something for you!
Doesn't surprise me. Gm is not known for quality. There 3/4 ton and up trucks are pretty good cause they have nothing much to do with the Isuzu engine and Allison transmission. Now the truck it's self is cheap plastic turd but a decent power train.

They’re very expensive but they claim to get 40% more power even with stock fueling on a truck that came out of the factory making 420hp at the crank lol.
Great video ! My 2021 GMC Sierra 8 speed well not engage in reverse ! Truck is less the 90 days old ! 5.3 developed a knock lifters broke an bent push rods! Gm is buying it back!
Wow! That's a lot of bad stuff going on with a new truck! Good thing you're getting the truck bought back!

@@jennydannyp7229 Guam? WTF. sorry to hear this. I almost bought the new GMC liked it so much but just bought a 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie instead (waiting for Night edition build & delivery) Hope I fair better due to Ram made in Sterling Heights Michigan Plant. its fuckin' ridiculous that you should experience this at all.
@@lilredcrvtt Never had one good experience at the dealership. I don't let them touch anything I own. Flat rate sucks.
I have a 2021 GMC Canyon, I get a rough shift from 1-2 only on the first drive of the day.... has your shifting gotten any better over time ?
I own a 2020 colorado buy it new does the same thing especially when is cold but I can hear the transmission fluid back and forth almost sounds like water
@@pablozo5885 Right. Mine has always done that. 58000 still the same.
At 55K now.
The original rims and tires seemed to work. The issue went away once I swapped back to them. There were no further problems after I did that.
@@lilredcrvtt no still in shop waiting to get looked at for the second time
The trans computer has to adapt to the trans and the drivers habits.
So it takes more than 2 years for it to adapt?
Cheers!
I have a 2021 Chevy Colorado and at 10,000 miles mine is now doing the same thing as others, and I still have original tires on the truck
Interesting update, thanks for the video
Pro trick: you can watch movies at Kaldrostream. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
@Nehemiah Judah Yea, been watching on KaldroStream for years myself :)
From the evidence on youtube and my own 2018 Sierra... No more Chevy's
First 1-2 shift of the morning is usually delayed. It's a normal thing, everyone else says.
@@mmaxon888 the delayed shift is possible. My truck only does that when it's very cold outside. Then it'll hold a lower gear until the truck warms up a bit. I believe that is programmed into the TCM. Otherwise when it's warmer my truck shifts as I expect.
had the water sloshing sound.. it was coming from the heater core.. went away after i did a coolant flush.. never had any over heating problems.
@@lilredcrvtt made a appointment for tomorrow , they said that it’s gonna be there the whole day to do a transmission diagnosis
What kind of mud flaps are those please ?
They are the Luverne mud flaps. I purchased them through a local GM dealers parts department. I have a quick video of the installation of the mud flaps.
@@lilredcrvtt Thank you very much. I’ve heard of them 👍👍👍

Do it yourself. The dealership will cut corners and only get part of it out. The good news is that it instantly fixed mine.
My TRD has 200k miles no issues it’s not a fun truck.
@@lilredcrvtt The Colorado is a blast to drive vs the Tacoma drives like a 90's truck i have one LOL
What I have found out is there is a class action law suite going on to this day. And it is over this transmission.
That is correct. In the U.S. there is a class action ongoing lawsuit related to this transmission. Not sure how it's progressing. However, I'm in Canada and not eligible for inclusion in that lawsuit.
Ford tech makuloco had that video.
Can you tell me what size tire are on it in this picture.
The tires are the stock 265/65/17 size. They are Goodyear Duratracs.
Tire width would have nothing to do with the trucks shifting.
I agree. However the overall diameter of the tire was slightly less than the original size. I'm not certain, but that might have contributed to some of the shifting issues. I've had no problems since I went back to the original rim/tire combination.
I have stock tires and mine is horrible
Mine has had zero issues since I went back to the stock tires. If you have warranty, get your truck to a dealership and get them to do something for you!
Doesn't surprise me. Gm is not known for quality. There 3/4 ton and up trucks are pretty good cause they have nothing much to do with the Isuzu engine and Allison transmission. Now the truck it's self is cheap plastic turd but a decent power train.
I haven't owned a 3/4 ton heavy duty truck. The powertrain seems built proof in those big trucks. Though the interior has a lot of cheap plastic.
@@lilredcrvtt I have owned 1 a 19 and it wasn't very good. I agree cheap interiors for sure. I think the power train is better in them than the half tons. They still have there issues that I have seen in construction mostly diesels. Its glitchy electrical crap and just to many gadgets and emissions crap. They all have problems just pick your poison really. They ask way to much for them for what you get.
Absolutely not.
Bad design trans. GM is trying to weasel out.
The torque converter has certainly been a problem in some cases. The entire fluid swap remedy is another way to possibly compensate for built in issues.
It was just bad fluid.
