It's a perfect movie, that's what I think of it. But I can also tell you, that it is something else when you are ten years old and you see it for the first time on VHS at your friend's house knowing that you then have to get back home on your bike in the dark on a dirt road that is by the sea. And if that is not bad enough, there was some misty fog in the distance hovering over the sea, I think I broke some speed records trying to get home that night. Cheers.
I love coming to certain channels comment section, especially Lee's when he reviews older movies. There are always fun interesting stories to be found.
I remember being home from college many years ago and randomly catching this on TNT late one night in my parent's basement with all the lights out. I had no previous knowledge of the film, but as soon as I heard John Houseman telling the kids the ghost story around the campfire followed by the somber music, I was hooked. It's also a movie where you kind of empathize with the antagonists. I mean, if I, along with my friends, had a horrible disease, was desperate for help, and thought I was going to get it from a group of kind people, only to be deceived and led to a horrible death while those very same people form a town using my stolen riches, I might hold a grudge too.
Thanks for this review. The Fog is ridiculously underrated. It's been my third favorite Carpenter film since The Thing came out. I notice only hardcore horror fans have a special love for this movie. The score is outstanding. It's probably the biggest reason it's so scary. I'm a bit behind on your reviews, but I'll catch up again. Always enjoy watching you. Thanks again man.
I loved this review. The fog is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I remember watching it when I was little one night and the next morning when my mother drove me to school there was this thick fog. I was very nervous going to school. This is definitely in my top 10 perhaps even my top 5 horror movies of all time.
Excellent review! I’ve adored this little gem of a movie for decades now. Definitely underrated. I agree with you on all counts, particularly regarding the amazing score. Really good stuff. Thanks for this review. P.S. Looking good, dude.
The score to this movie is incredible. Not only can John Carpenter write and direct a great atmospheric movie, he always tops it off with music that perfectly fits with what is happening on the screen. This review made me super happy. Thank you so much for doing this review. 🎃
Great review Lee. Happy Birthday to Carpenter next week, the 16th. Do you have the Scream Factory edition of it? I totally agree with you on The Fog. Easily a top 5 best Carpenter movie for me. I can't say enough how amazing this movie is. It boggles my mind how Carpenter and Jamie Lee only have mixed feeling about it from interviews I've watched with them. I keep forgetting there was a remake of this movie. If you ever do review that terrible remake, please oh please give it a Looped In Hell rating.
Yeah I totally agree Lee. Not only is The Fog one of the most underrated Carpenter films but one of the most underrated horror films ever. So creepy with a great score , great performances and Carpenter does such a great job of conveying that feeling of the walls slowly closing in on these characters and the danger level mounting minute by minute. And yes a perfect final scene as well. Love it
The Fog, is one of those movies I can watch on repeat and not get tired of it. It's a perfect ghost story. The scenery filmed is just another work of art, just like Halloween. I won't go into the entire story and bore you, lol. But, as a horror loving kid, one morning going to school, it was Friday the 13th, and so foggy you couldn't see three feet infront of you. So I was already having a fantastic day, lol. Bus stopped to pick up the last kids, and a black cat ran across the front of the bus! I saw it! I was totally geeking out being a horror freak. 15 minutes later, our bus crashed into the back of another bus, that had already hit ANOTHER BUS, then about six cars piled up behind my bus. That's how foggy it was, and , on F13th, AND a black cat! I will never forget it. ( I said I wasn't gonna bore you with the story and I did anyway, lol)
The Fog is the first horror movie I ever saw, and my God the suspense. I was hooked. I agree it is the best ghost story and definitely my favorite. I agree 100 percent with everything you said. Its amazing when you think all the effect had to be practical no cgi.
Thank you for the review. Saw this movie when I was 6 on TV. 34 years later it still scares the shite out of me. Mood and atmosphere to the extreme. I recently met Adrienne Barbeau at a horror con. She is one of the nicest people in the world.
Same with Village of The Damned, which is shot in the same location. Its an ace Carpenter film and Christopher Reeve and Kirsty Alley are superb in it too. Its in my top 5.
This was one of my favourite horror movies growing up & is my second favourite Carpenter movie after Halloween. It's so atmospheric & creepy, plus I was brought up with a real love for good old fashioned ghost stories like the 1989 adaptation of Susan Hills The Woman In Black or The Haunting so The Fog is exactly the kind of eerie, slow burn scary movie I love. Every time I watch The Fog that opening scene in particular gives me goosebumps every time I see it it's just so creepy.
By far one of Carpenter's best scores. I just re-watched this last week after decades of not seeing this movie. The music just makes one not notice the slow burn. Loved it!
Great movie. The old guy at the beginning is John Houseman, a legend of the 40's, 50's, 60's. You should check out Ghost Story with Houseman, Fred Astaire and Melvin Douglas from the early 80's. Another good one is The Changeling with George C. Scott from 1980.
Another Carpenter classic & what a fantastic review Lee, John Carpenter is one of my favourite directors & I know he wasn't happy with this film but personally I think it's one of his best.. Carpenter wrings so much tension & atmosphere out this movie & delivers a creepy little ghost story. I remember seeing this as a kid on BBC1 in UK in the 80's & it scared the crap out of me, the music score is terrifying & enhances the suspense & atmosphere. Oh & the final twist ends the film perfectly, I think Blake & his crew were victims & just wanted revenge upon the townsfolk as it was there ancestors who stole his gold. Overall a great cast, good direction, chilling music score, tense, terrifying & suspenseful.
Awesome review Lee! Love this movie, always been one of my favorites. I was able to see this one on the big screen last month and it was really something! Great job as always. Looking forward to the next one!
So excited to see you do the Fog- always loved this movie!! Fave parts: dead man in hospital stands up and walks towards Jamie Lee and of course the great opening with John Houseman telling a "ghost story". Its the movie that made me take notice of the great Tom Atkins, and seek out other movies he was in. Thanks Lee!
This is a Carpenter movie that just doesn't get near the attention it deserves. Its probably the least mentioned of his movies and I dont know why that is. Its a great ghost story and had a lot of the Halloween series actors in it, so you cant go wrong there! But most of all , like you mentioned perfectly: it had a great since of dread with no real happy ending. Carpenter showcased those kinds of fimn from time to time ( like in The Thing, Halloween 3, Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness) and for me, they're largely some of my favorites for it. Plus, this story is based on a real life event in the 19th Century near Goletta, California where townsfolk plundered a shipwreck instead of rescuing the victims. So that gives it a neat creepier edge Great review Lee!
I remember when I was 3 my grandpa let me watch Halloween and he also had the fog on vhs. I never asked him to watch it but I found it on prime video and ended up watching it. I loved it. It’s such a chilling movie and a very rewatchable movie.
OMG...such a surprise!!! I love The Fog...together with Halloween and The Thing, my favourite Carpenter's movie👍The plot, cast, soundtrack...everything's perfect in this movie!!! 👻
@@DrumdumsOfficial It might be my favourite too. It is just so visually pleasing to my eyes. The 4K picture restoration here in the UK is beautiful. Hope you review Escape from New York and They Live shortly.
Hey! Great video. The Fog is one of those Carpenter films I have to watch a few times per year along with Assault on P13, H78, and The Thing. Brings me back to my childhood and what Carpenter’s films and soundtracks meant to me growing up. Before he went a bit off with IMM, Ghosts of Mars, etc.
I like u are reviewing these old movies of the more newer reboots. I would watch the reboots more, but your reviews help me to decide if I should :) I have seen the fog 2005 one, not this one
This film is a masterpiece. As good as Halloween. You sum it up well. Hol Holbrook is a wonderful turn and those Cundy scenes at the start with the fish bone swinging is married so well with Caroenters direction. They dont make them like this now.
Probably my favourite review yet, dude. The Fog is one of the greatest horror films ever made. It encapsulates a perfect formula for creepy ghoulish scares and slasherific horror. I adore it from top to bottom and can watch over and over with no break in concentration. The way the score, framing, atmosphere and story builds to that final act is genre picture perfection. One of my all time favourites. So close to Halloween. 👍💀😱
Definitely in my top 3 or 4 Carpenter films; just tremendous atmosphere. Fog is just oddly spooky. I remember one time back when I was twenty or so walking with a friend in a really heavy fog at night, and I went up the road to see how far I had to go before he became invisible. After I walked back, I told him I'd had this really weird feeling of, "What if I get back to that dark silhouette and it's not him?" He told me he'd had the exact same feeling.
It's funny, because Carpenter has mentioned multiple times that he found the story hard to crack, and added the whole campfire tale scene and the gas station scene in reshoots because he felt it wasn't spooky enough. I guess all that matters is that he got there in the end.
"The Fog" looks terrific (the fog itself and the clarity of the scenes), Adrian Barbeau is perfect, it's very suspenseful, has some really nice scares, the music is amazing, and it has a wonderful, creepy, yet cozy atmosphere. And the whole cast was very good. (I'm just repeating most of what you said). Carpenter was really in the zone during this era, with "Halloween," "The Fog," "Escape from New York, and "The Thing." Then I think he did "Christine," which was also good. But those first 4 films are my favorites of his.
Very underrated. The first Carpenter film I saw was Assault on Precinct 13 in the early eighties, and it blew my mind. The second was The Fog, and I loved it as well. My father rented a whole lot of films on Betamax back then, but those two stood out for me. I didn't know it was the same director then. But after that I explored his films, been a big fan for decades. Great review! Greetings from Sweden.
I just watched this on John Carpenter's birthday 🖤 It's my second favorite film of his, after Halloween! Great review Lee, you touch on alot of great points, about how the ghosts look 👍🏻
The Fog is a very good film. While it may not be the best Carpenter film from a character perspective, its themes of revenge and the incredible direction by Carpenter and the amazing practical effects make this movie an enjoyable late night chiller. Also, I don't know what you're talking about when you say that The Fog didn't do well financially. It made over $20 million on a $1 million budget. It was just how it was received critically that wasn't good. Man, Carpenter truly was ahead of his time. Great director that people just couldn't appreciate at the time. Also, thanks for doing your videos, man. It's a pleasure to share similar tastes in movies with someone. Especially someone like me who loves late 20th century films, yet I grew up in the 2000s.
I love this film so hard! For all of the reasons you listed, I love this film! It has so much going for it, and it is the only "ghost story" that I find creepy (I love The Amityville Horror, too, but that's more of a haunting). Such a great, FOGGY review, Lee! 👌🏻😎🙂
Janet Leigh is the mother of Jamie Lee Curtis and they both worked with John Carpenter on The Fog(1980) also Jamie Lee Curtis is the daughter of Tony Curtis
I had a huge blind spot for 80s horror when i was in my 20s and this one always slipped under my radar. I had this stupid preconceived notion that old horror movies would be cheesy because theyre old. Then I started watching movies like The Thing and The Fly and realized that what all those guys like Baker, Botin, KNB, and the great Savini were able to do practically is incredible. Carpenter is hands down my favorite director and this is now the next movie on my must watch list! Thanks.
Well you're not wrong. Some of them are. But this is one of the good ones. Check out The Evil if you haven't. It's from the late 70s but it's a solid ghost story. I even reviewed it.
@@DrumdumsOfficial thanks! Added to my list. I just subscribed to Hulu last night just so I could start watching the Into the Dark series...theyre supposed to be really good.
Fantastic review brother! Carpenter and Cundey utilised their skills to perfection with this masterpiece. I think that this is easily Carpenter's best film since Halloween, I've said it before and I'll say it again. My Top 5: 01. Halloween 02. The Fog 03. The Thing 04. Assault on Precinct 13 05. Starman
I got my Scream Factory poster signed by Barbeau last TFW and The Fog has to be one of my favorite Carpenter films. I have the score on vinyl and is regularly played.
I watched this as a kid but I didn’t remember anything about it. Every time I asked my dad about it he said he didn’t like it. I randomly decided to buy the blu ray a few months back and oh my god I should have revisited this movie sooner. So fantastic and really eerie. Probably my favorite Carpenter film.
I remember when I first got the DVD and I watched it, and my dad happened to step in. Whereas I found it eerie, tense, and a great film, he found it boring and stupid; then again, he was never exactly a horror person. Great review, though, this movie rocks and anytime I watch it, I get an unsettling feeling, especially if I watch it at night. There's something weirdly creepy about fog, something which the film uses to great effect. Fun fact: The church used in this movie also appears in Return of the Living Dead Part II. Remember, all horror roads lead to Return of the Living Dead Part II.
You can't a better 80's horror movie than this one Lee. The practical effects, the score, the setting, fucking John Carpenter. I actually had this movie on VHS a long time ago but lost it after my mother passed away. This film is one of the reasons why I loved old school horror movies so much. I don't know if you seen Prom Night but if you haven't, you need to see it. I'm sure they're other 80's horror movies that you haven't seen that I could recommend.
I hate when the camera battery dies! The worst feeling 😫 Great review as always. I love my Tom Atkins in this ♥️ Can’t wait to see your review on Slumber Party Massacre! I LOVE that movie 😊
Drumdums I have seen Pieces! I hated it at first bc I thought it was going to be serious at first 🤣 I was so confused! But now I love it bc it’s so cheesy and over the top. “Baaaaastard!”
This is the only other Carpenter film I own. I know, I'm a disgrace. I was just thinking that for me, this could have been written in as part of the Halloween anthology that never really happened. I'd give in to that. I prefer this over Halloween III by a long shot.
I just watched this movie too for the 3rd time ever and i LOVED it this time! I didn't enjoy it quite as much the first two times i saw it but i always dug it and considered it one of Carpenter's better films. BUT NOW its in my top 5 without a doubt! I ALWAYS LOVED THE SCORE THO! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CAN WE GET A TOP 10 CARPENTER FILMS RANKING ASAP!!! LOVE THE CHANNEL MUCH LOVE DRUMDUMS! KILLER FLICKS FO LYFE!
@@DrumdumsOfficial Oh fersure then ill be patiently waiting haha Which ones have you not seen? I havent seen Assault on Precint 13, Star Man or Escape from LA
The Fog has some of the best creepy atmosphere ever!
So true!!
It's a lot like a Dario Argento movie, except _The Fog_ has an actual plot and characters to be invested in.
I agree.

I Love this movie so much! The Fog is a Carpenter masterpiece!
Couldn't agree more!
"The Fog" is a great all year round movie to watch.

one of the reasons why I think of The Fog to be a good movie is because it’s very much eerie macabre and chilling

Nice to finally have a reviewer acknowledge the great cinematography by Dean Cundey !
Hell yeah. I will give props to Cundey every chance I get!

Never seen it. I know I know unforgivable. My fiancé and I are gonna watch it tonight! Love your content as always bro
Ray...you have to watch this. Essential Carpenter.
I can't believe this review is already up this is going to be by the way 1 of my favorite John Carpenter films
These Ghosts where basically Pirates !! 👌🏼
Haha they are!
The Fog was remade once I saw the remake and it displeased me I know that the original is a classic
mmmm....that Dean Cundey cinematography...mmmm yummy
I love this movie. It has atmosphere from the start. That campfire scene is a great opener.
One of the best horror films in terms of atmosphere.
The Fog was a Brilliant Movie. Not just Horror. 👏once again Great Review.
Thank you Joel!
My favorite movie of all time
"The Fog" looks terrific (the fog itself and the clarity of the scenes), Adrian Barbeau is perfect, it's very suspenseful, has some really nice scares, the music is amazing, and it has a wonderful, creepy, yet cozy atmosphere.
One of my favorites to watch during Halloween
Very underrated. The first Carpenter film I saw was Assault on Precinct 13 in the early eighties, and it blew my mind. The second was The Fog, and I loved it as well. My father rented a whole lot of films on Betamax back then, but those two stood out for me. I didn't know it was the same director then. But after that I explored his films, been a big fan for decades. Great review!
Greetings from Sweden.
I finally have the blu-ray of Precinct. And the VHS. Can't wait to finally watch that one.
Hope you like it. Really low-budget, but Carpenter is a master when it comes to that :-)
I just watched this on John Carpenter's birthday 🖤 It's my second favorite film of his, after Halloween! Great review Lee, you touch on alot of great points, about how the ghosts look 👍🏻
horror ghoul Thank you Jill! In terms of mood, atmosphere, and scares....nothing beats The Fog. The ghosts are so creepy!💀😮
Father Malone pops out of the confessional and Janet Leigh jumps and says "Jesus" LMAO
Haha I wonder if that was planned. 😂
One of my favorite movies of all time it's so underrated
It's amazing.
Saw The Fog in the 80`s as a teenager when it came out.
Scared the hell out of me. Especially the ghost lepers.
Scariest ghosts ever put to film.
I love this film so hard! For all of the reasons you listed, I love this film! It has so much going for it, and it is the only "ghost story" that I find creepy (I love The Amityville Horror, too, but that's more of a haunting).
Such a great, FOGGY review, Lee! 👌🏻😎🙂
Haha I wish all movies had fog in them so I could use that effect more often! :p
My Top 5:
01. Halloween
02. The Fog
03. The Thing
04. Assault on Precinct 13
05. Starman
Hell yeah. The Fog is amazing!
I got my Scream Factory poster signed by Barbeau last TFW and The Fog has to be one of my favorite Carpenter films. I have the score on vinyl and is regularly played.
Awesome! I'd love to meet her.
One of my all-time favorites. All those Scream Queens!!!
Hell yeah. 3 of them!
Awesome video Lee, thank you!
You're welcome Patrick!!
My alarm on my phone is the fog music
Nice!
It's amazing!!
Hey Lee, you should do a john carpenter ranking, also just curious if you have seen the Changeling or Ghost Story?
So Tom Akin an actor is playing as Nick Castle another actor wow that just amazing.
Classic film. It has this Hitchcockian atmosphere and suspense that Carpenter really nailed.
Indeed. One of the best.
Yeah Fog is a tough sell on non-horror fans, or casual movie watchers even.
Probably the only Carpenter cameo where he gets a couple of lines too.
It's one of my most prized VHS possessions. So sorry about your mother Monty.
I love the sultry radio announcements
Definitely. Stevie Wayne baby.
I hate when the camera battery dies! The worst feeling 😫 Great review as always. I love my Tom Atkins in this ♥️ Can’t wait to see your review on Slumber Party Massacre! I LOVE that movie 😊
I love Slumber Party Massacre so much too. That review will be dropping today. Have you seen Pieces Gabby? Another great 80s nasty.
Drumdums I have seen Pieces! I hated it at first bc I thought it was going to be serious at first 🤣 I was so confused! But now I love it bc it’s so cheesy and over the top. “Baaaaastard!”
Underrated all the way , one of the best Carpenter movie , plus has an epic soundtrack =D
Couldn't agree more Diogo!
10:30 Great Sound 😱 i like Carpenter's music very much 👍
This is the only other Carpenter film I own.
Thank you! There are a few Carpenter films I still need to watch, but I'll get one out after.
@@DrumdumsOfficial Oh fersure then ill be patiently waiting haha Which ones have you not seen? I havent seen Assault on Precint 13, Star Man or Escape from LA
