Norway: is it cold?
yes
Norway: do people live there
no
Norway: *smug grin*
Norway is so far away it should have barely any claim
@@legendary_tortoiseo5553 Just like Russia, USA, and UK
@Patricio Hondagneu Roig I agree
Legendary_tortoise O5 as of now no country OWNS antarctica but any country including just some random person who wants to go to antarctica can build a base on antarctica as long as it follows the rules (the rules may change by 2040 which is when they will follow up on the old rules)
"who owns Antarctica?"
Whoever is strong enough to substantiate their claims. As always.
Always remember: bigger army diplomacy
Well, Russia holds control over Crimea, Turkey holds control over North Cyprus, India holds control over South Kashmir, Pakistan holds control over North Kashmir, Egypt holds control over Hala'ib. Yet these are not considered ownership.
@@Liggliluff This was exactly my point: it doesn't matter who recognise what to whom, the only things that matters is whether you are strong enough to take and keep what you want. Also, while military strength is usually the preferred metric, economic strength could be used too.
@@Liggliluff Russia claims ownership to Crimea. They “voted” to join Russia.
@@Beregorn88
That or if your country lacks said strengths in both military force or economic might to back up its claims to territory, resources, and economically valuable infrastructure then get the backing or support of countries that do have such strengths if not entirely because of sympathy or a sense of respecting a country's sovereignty then mostly because it's in your country's potential allies' best (current..) interests to help you assert your nation's claims to would be takers or challengers of them. Basically if you're small make big 'friends' and make yourself more convenient to keep around if not necessarily irreplaceable.

It'll truly be a bubblegum crisis.
+Kyle A Well, I could see it being a positive thing as well.
While consideration to the environment should be paid, and hopefully these territorial disputes will be better resolved, who knows what could be hidden under the ice? We're talking about an area more than half the size of North America that's gone mostly untouched by human hands. Maybe the miners will find some archaeological treasure, another meteorite with signs of life on it, or a cure for cancer in some previously undiscovered mineral.
That is, if Antarctica isn't completely melted by that time.

The "leave nothing behind" rule also applies to tourists, who are told when they take a trip off their cruise ship to go walk on the icy land that they are not to leave anything, not even hair. Apparently cruise ship companies can be very alert to tourists traveling with other companies just in case they break that rule so one company can be taken out of the tourist running. Chile is mining the Antartica 🤷🏻♀️
I would like to claim that piece of Antarctica as my own, if that's cool with everyone.
Could you share a bit with me?
Do you have a flag?
Yes I have a flag
I offer you a treaty in which you own the majority of that land and I get a piece of that coast I request a minimum of 100 by 100 square miles and we both get transit rights to each other also the area must have at least 2 tribes of penguins so I can negotiate with the natives do you agree to these terms on behalf of your nation?
Don't worry everyone's COOL in Antartica.
Imma just gonna go and claim that land real quick
ABCWarrior same we can rule that land together get that water
Aust Gaming and kill everyone.... HE HEHE HEN HAHAHAHAN HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
DIBS
Easy answer Antartica own by God
The treaty bans new sovereign states making claims and also bans new sovereign states from developing there, but if you don’t make a country here no one will except the claim and thus no one will act on it.
2:51 Fun Fact: in a RLL video, if you draw a certain line going at a certain angle at a certain spot on the unclaimed Antarctic coast, you won’t pass any land and until ending up in Norway.
Mankind thinks that they own everything.
But the truth is that the penguins are the ones who own everything!
+Fezdalek Abraian maybe the penguins are just waiting for humanity to catch up to their intelligence so that they can wage a fair and full fledged war on humanity! until then, they're just chilling out on antarctica.....
And their glorious leader is the penguin CGP Grey.
After we take the penguins land, killing many in the process, we are going to give them reservations to make up for the Trail of Frozen Tears. Soon after, we'll want more of the Antarctic and push their reservations into smaller and smaller areas until they're a bunch of small penguin towns with penguins trying to grow up hoping on their penguin scholarships to help them out of the reservations and into the Americanized Antarctica.
ALL THE GUNTERS
Actually, temmie owns everything
Does every country need to agree to renew the act or just the majority? I'd prefer if no one drilled for oil there, but that's just me
+JustinBobcat Well every country that would have the power to mine there. If Antarctica were to become completely claimed and then everyone who owned the claims renew the mining part of the deal, then if another country like Brazil decided they wanted to mine there, because they hadn't signed the treaty, as long as the treaty didn't require the countries that signed to give up their claims, Brazil would have to go through those countries who have claims first.
Now if everyone but say the UK were to sign the treaty then all the countries that signed wouldn't be able to mine, but the UK could mine, at least in the land that they claimed was theirs (and if they wished to prevent international tension, only the land that everyone else agreed was theirs and wasn't claimed by someone else).
+JustinBobcat
I think not wanting people to drill in Antarctica is a sentiment a lot of people would agree with. It would mess up an ecosystem in one of the few places where we haven't messed it up.
+JustinBobcat everyone who's part of the treaty has to agree to the treaty
those who agree to the treaty might enforce the rules from that treaty, if that is part of the treaty
since I don't know the exact wording of the treaty and can't be bothered to read the thing, I'd say this is the safe answer:
if enough major forces agree to the no mining thing then there will be no mining there for however long they agree on
and I'd be surprised if they go promining, as that will get a LOT of border disputes, which could end up in tempers, which could end up in war, which could end up with a nuked away earth, which none of the countries (apart from north-korea maybe :P) want
+Motive 3rd You're joking right?

So does Antarctica have one time zone so all the research bases can talk to each other easily? Or do they use their respective countries' time?
Glitchy Glitch Why? It’s a good question.
I would guess they all use the same time zone for simplicity since the sun is generally out either 24/7 or never
They all use different times, mostly based on the timezones based on their longitude. However every country with a base on Antarctica has they on rules
Wait so if you stood at the pole you would be in how many timezones exactly?

I want to visit Antarctica so bad, seems fascinating! Also want to visit Svalbard, Greenland, and all the other horrible cold remote places. Not sure why.
I have one request, can you do that "Civilisation Tech Tree" video. I mean the picture at 0:58. I would really like the video explaining that. BTW great video! ;) bye
I'd move to Grey-arctica if I could I mean come on, it would be a nerdy democracy-paradise
I love how he put his own slice of antarctica on some of the maps
