To summarize, we imported some sheep 130 years ago and they carried a disease that we still have a hard time rooting out in the local sheep population. We’re not taking any chances with the horses

Finland has a bigger history with Sweden than with Russia. Finland was under swedish rule over 600 years. Under Russia 100 years.

Icelandic horses are not vaccinated against common diseases because they do not exist on Iceland. Many Icelandic horses are semi-feral, living in big herds, so it would not be easy to vaccinate them. For that reason you cannot bring horses to Iceland, to avoid spreading disease. If a horse is taken out of the country it can never return.

@@apaloosa01 Yes. There are no thoroughbreds, warm-bloods, half-bloods, etc, only Icelandic horses on the island, so an Icelandic horse would never qualify for an Olympic equestrian event.
There are special competitions for Icelandic horses where they showcase their special gates (Icelandic Horses have five different gates compared to the usual three gates most breeds have).
The biggest events are without a doubt the World Championships and Landsmót, each held every other year. Landsmót is a national event in Iceland, where all the best horses are gathered and participate in several competitions and shows. As no horse import to Iceland is allowed, this event consists of horses born in Iceland only.
The World Championships, however, are always held outside Iceland. The Icelandic team is always enthusiastic and competitive, but as the horses can never return once they leave the island, sometimes the very best horses in each class might not attend the World Championships as their owners would rather keep them in Iceland.

Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can understand each other’s language. So very natural to use the term “Scandinavian languages”. That is the most central part missed in this video.
As a Norwegian i was always taught that Norway, Sweden and Denmark is Scandinavia and The Nordic countries is Scandinavia plus Finland, Iceland, greenland, and the Faroe islands.

The English word "Scandinavia" can technically mean Nordic, Scandinavia or some combinations here of, which irritates us locals a little :)

Scandinavia was (unlike Nordic) defined by similar languages, shared culture and history. Greenland, and Faroe Islands is a part of The kingdom of Denmark - not Denmark proper. While they do share history, they don't share much of the rest. This is the reason why Greenland and Faroe Islands are not normally considered Scandinavia unlike Norway, Sweden and Denmark proper.

hi I'm actually from Åland and would like to inform you that the Å is pronounced like a long O or OA in for example "oar", "sword", "floor", "gourd" - we pronounce the letter o more like an "ooh" sound as the sound in "pool", "boot" or "tool" (if you pronounce it in a slight irish accent) which is why we have a separate letter for the other "o" sound (unlike english) so it is not "Aland" sounding like "Allan", it is Åland sounding like "ooar"-land (makes sense you might need oars when you live on an island) otherwise great video :)

2:16 regarding the "respect distance", it is a super common set of rules for how a mark should be places, and used. As an example, you would want an important logo like the biohazard symbol to be easily seen, especially when among less important symbols on ie. a bottle of chemicals. Or making sure an important document from can be easily recognized in a stack of others.
Designers make "(design) manuals" for designers and non-designers alike to follow, usually containing minimum sizes, distance from other marks as to not blend in and what color the mark should be on different materials and prints as to make it easy to see. That way a new designer can become familier with how to place the marks in new designs or someone with no design experience can still make sure a mark is placed in a visible way.
Nordic Family
There is the strong, Independent mother named Denmark, who is always happy and does her best to help out the family
Then their is Father Sweden, a millionaire scientist who (until recently) was always fighting with his wife. They now are quite happy together.
Then there is the Older Sister Norway, a beautiful young lady who came from a home full of custody battles with her parents. She now has a profitable oil business, and has worked out her problems with her clingy parents.
There is Uncle Finland, Swedens Brother who comes around often. He is a woodsman who has a mild addiction to alcohol, but still cares about his family
Then there is Brother Iceland, a crafty kid who is always turning on the heating at the family house, and owns dozens of pets.
There is the Little Girl Aland, who has been dragged into a lot of chaos between Sweden and Finland. After Aland was adopted by Sweden, Finland took her during some disputes with their neighbor, Russia. Today Aland refers to both of them as 'Father'
Across the Street is Estonia, a Girl who keeps swearing that she did a DNA test and is related to the Nordics. They keep ignoring her, and Esti is stuck having to panic every time Russia goes out on his lawn.
Faroe is Denmarks son, who has always loved her mother. They both go to the movies and dinner together. Faroe does have a bit of an obsession with Birds though.
Then there is the rebellious Child of Greenland. He deals with extreme anxiety and Depression, at some points even becoming suicidal at some points. He hates his mother Denmark due to an argument from awhile ago, and has moved out into a ghetto down town. He constantly try's to show everyone he is not part of the family.
Lastly, their is Scotland. He filing for divorce from his Wife England, and keeps asking to move back in with the family while he finds his true purpose.
This is the Nordic Family. Not Perfect, but still getting by.

I think somebody should mention that Finland is the only Nordic country that does not have a language that is in the Germanic family or descended from Old Norse. Their language is related to Estonian and Hungarian, which are both nothing like Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian (I can't speak for Icelandic or Faroese as I have no experience with either languages).
Idk about Faroese, but Icelandic is currently the closest language to Old Norse.

I normally call it America too, although I think calling ourselves 'americans' contributes to the problem since there isn't really a better alternative. I mean what are you going to call us? United Statians of America? Actually I just looked that up, people do rarely (and correctly) call citizens of the USA 'United Statians' or singularly, a 'United Statian'. American really defines anyone in from the west really, and even North American still doesn't specify the USA, including Mexico and Canada. When you think about it that's not a lot of countries, but they are all REALLY BIG countries so...

One of the funniest things is when you talk in your native languages Swedish Norwegian and Danish with English speakers around. It often leads to people thinking we are all speaking Danish.
An interesting tidbit of all of this is that food is allowed to be written in each others languages as long as its easy to understand.
At least in Sweden. So you might find sauce with a Norwegian ingredients list.

Fun fact, the Scandinavian countries actually were implementing a common currency early on and that's why all the Scandinavian countries have "kroner" as a currency, though these days as regional variants. It was dissolved when WW1 broke out and was called the Scandinavian Monetary Union, seen by many as sort of the cradling of a more formal union as Scandinavian unification (at least informally because it's unlikely newly freed Norway would have supported it and Sweden and Denmark was still cooly in relations) as a political issue was the most blooming in those very romanticist years around the turn of the 1800s but alas never became a thing.
It's legacy lives on in every country who were part of it whose currencies are still called "crowns" or kroner, none of which went back to their "rigsdalers", which I think was based on the German reichsthaler and I guess can be loosely translated to "realms dollar". Later on though the EU would adopt the same concept with Euros, but this, hilariously enough, is a very unpopular thing in EU Scandinavia despite the concept being adopted there with LMU (Latin Monetary Union) being the main inspiration for it and whose countries all adopted the Euro. Unlike post LMU countries, both EU Scandinavian countries, Denmark and Sweden, still use their own "kroner" or crowns and resist adopting the Euro very strongly.
I wish the UK (my country) would shift towards the nordic countries. they lead the world on everything and we're becoming so americanized.

I think that it was actually a reference to that fact that Norway provides a lot of incentives for electric cars, resulting in a lot of Teslas on the road.
It is actually encouraged to buy electric cars here in Norway. Therefore, when the Tesla was announced so many people preordered it that one had to wait up to 3 months before getting one. And all of a sudden we had like 50000 Teslas on the roads and they could be seen everywhere. :P

3:08 you displayed the danish viking there, when it was in fact a norwegian viking who found greenland (Leif Erikson) . Denmark got it because they took over Norway, and when Norway got independence, they never gave Greenland back. This is the same story with the Faroe Islands

That's not why Denmark took possession of the Norwegian overseas colonies; Denmark-Norway was allied with Napoleon during the Napoleonic wars, Sweden was allied with Britain. When Napoleon lost, part of the Treaties of Paris declared that Sweden were to enter a union with Norway, they neglected the overseas territories so they fell to Denmark. Besides the Norwegian colonies on Greenland were abandoned during the medieval cooling period in the 13th-16th century, nearly 200 years before Hans Egede (a Norwegian btw) sailed under the Danish king to Greenland to convert the catholic Norwegians, found no Norwegians so converted the pagan Greenlanders instead.
The Faroe islands has had more Danish influence than Norwegian in the past 600-700 years, that's why a lot of them speak near perfect Danish.

The model which is ignored is the one adopted by the most successful Nordic nations. Those are the nations which have had the best education for decades now and the least imbalance in society and wealth. Seemingly these nations also are among the happiest too.

yes, and while sweden gave finland only a religion and couple castles, russia gave finland huge improvements in the national scale, political and economical. despite that, finnish really like more of their wastern neighbours than eastern ones.
The Russians also invaded twice after independence and made Finland's political situation very difficult throughout the cold war.

Also, during cold war Finland was one of the very few countries Soviets traded with so it meant huge exports and boosts for Finlands economy. Yes, they were tough times but Finlad had it easy compared to other european countries. No total rebuild of infastructure and such... Of the war going nations, there were 3 european capitals which were not occupied in WW2: London, Moscow and Helsinki.

Alex Ace We've had wars with Russians since the 900s, with Swedes since the 200s. Russia is much closer culturally, historically and genetically to Finns than Sweden could ever hope to be. In fact, Finnic people founded Russia. The only problem is that the slavic population overgrew us and took over as time passed.

In Denmark "Holland" means "The Netherlands", when we rarely say "Nederlandene" which actually means "The Netherlands" then we talk about The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. So therefore The Netherlands thing confused me when I was younger.

Norway's wealth is actually a very recent phenomenon. Before oil was discovered in the North Sea, Norway was a very poor country, relatively speaking.
And before alot of people immigrated to Sweden and helped build our workforce, so was we. Yes, we did have alot of natural resources in "the old days", but at the begining of the 1900ds we where considered poor :P

What I had in mind was MOSTLY and in GENERAL the jugoslavians (well, former jugoslavia now days) that helped build the WORKFORCE of sweden in the 50's, 60's and 70's, at a time when the industries of our fair country were screaming for workers. Without those immigrants, the factories (in general) wouldnt be able to function, thus not contribute to the national economy thus not helping to make sweden a "rich" county.
Please note that I'm not stating immigration and/or imigrants ALONE built the wealth, however, it did help alot to have as open borders as we did.
Also, my original comment was sort of just an add-note to Inkshooters comment about Norways recent wealth.
Somehow you managed to interpret that as me talking about what you call "the Islamic Invasion" and me discriminating about native swedes, wich would be really odd of me since both my parents and three of my siblings, me and my sister beeing adopted, are what contistutes as "Native Swedes", so I would de facto call them lazy, wich they aren't.
