that scene where demi's character cant seem to get out of the door and doesn't find herself presentable really hit home HARD. This is such a great movie.
As much as I disliked the last two chapters of this film: I really appreciated how the monster cut out Elisabeth's face from the giant photo, and wore it like a mask. That was the moment she realized she was pretty all along, and shouldn't have taken her natural beauty for granted. But now it's too late. Her fate is sealed.
It’s “Margaret” not Margot Qualley. That being said, I’m obsessed with this movie. Demi killed it. She will be an awards season frontrunner. Likely both of them.
Exactly !! Throughout the movie ( which I saw on Thursday ) I didn’t feel good … some weird feeling in the stomach … !! I was so excited for that movie .. but it was TOO much of blood etc … ! I am still disturbed
The filmography was good. Long hallways and square creepy rooms. First hour 1/2 was good. I felt Death becomes her meets Carrie meets The Elephant man. Both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley were fantastic
I think the ending is also a commentary on how celebs will often get fillers, Botox, face lifts and cosmetic surgery to the point where at first the public loves them or admires them until there comes a point where the celebs surgeons go too far and suddenly they looked botched. Then suddenly the public will turn on them and ridicule, shame, mock, judge and criticize the celeb. It happened in real life with Demi Moore - when she came back into the spotlight with her “new” face after she had gotten a bunch of fat transfers and I think probably a face lift and fillers, people freaked tf out over how she looked in that one modeling show she did where she “debuted” her new face post op. People were so cruel in criticizing her and shaming her for “ruining” her face and it became a huge topic of conversation bc she wasnt the only female celeb who went “too” far - female celebs like Madonna also got thrown in the ring. The public was fine with the procedures these women had probably been doing for years until the point where in the public’s opinion, they went too far and then suddenly they became victims of bullying and humiliation by the public.
I disagree, the general public aren't "fine" with the procedures. Celebrities hide and lie about them until they become botched and can't hide it anymore. Just like Elizabeth tried to hide her real self and was successful until she became the monster.
I saw this movie yesterday and I was just blown away, grossed out so many emotions but I think you’re right after some time I might come to really appreciate but idk if I could do a second viewing but I do keep thinking back on how cool it looked, just great acting just different for sure
Ok just throwing my 2 cents , but does anyone feel like maybe there is a chance that if Elisabeth goes on that date, there might be a change of heart and stops the experiment?? Like Sue already had fucked up (finger aging because Sue didn’t respect the 7 day rule ) and Elisabeth gives hints of maybe this might be gone a little too far . But then again , Elisabeth does get a high knowing Sue is her , unfortunately Sue doesn’t feel the same (which is why she’s already broke the rule ). Just found the movie outstanding, although the ending monster scene went on to long and a little rolling eyes but solid 8/10
I love how Quaid’s character is in the audience seeing this horrific, unbelievable thing take place, and doesn’t even look alarmed or panicked like everyone else because he’s too fucking pissed off that the whole NYE event just blew up in his face - literally and figuratively - in front of the creepy old white dude execs who own his slimy, toxic ass. Great scene, and the one that follows it too: the remaining blob of Elisasue squelching with such determination over to her pink star and finding the last pieces of happiness. Or maybe it’s satisfaction. Brilliant.
Loved revenge it’s one of my favorite movies. The cinematography is beautiful. I enjoyed the substance just saw it. I will watch anything this writer makes
i just watched it for a second time. i'm obsessed with this movie. just incredible from the cinematography/visuals to the themes and emotions that it made me feel. it's fucking insane but i will not be over it for a long time.
I just left the theatre a hour ago and feel like this movie gave me a high. It was a lot and almost too much as I watched it! As it settles with me more though I think I loved it and it might be a masterpiece. It really lands on its themes of aging and the oversexualization of Hollywood in a horror lens. Also whoever casted Demi Moore needs an award and a raise. First off she’s still gorgeous but I feel like she’s a victim to this movies message and undeservedly so.
The most disturbing part for me was when her younger self revived and beat the shit out of her older self. She kept smashing her face in the mirror and kicking her body, over and over and over and over - the self hate, I was crying!!😭
I thought it was the worse movie I have ever seen. Unless you just want to see a naked Demi it's not worth seeing. I left about 10 mins before it ended.
Agreed. Seems like the director was more concerned with filming naked women than making a good movie. Could’ve removed some of the shower scenes and still get the same themes across.
One critique and one confusing thing: The end was a bit off the rails bc in particular the blood spray made the movie take a completely unnecessary comical turn The part where the pretty White Girl wakes up and the old version fight each other - so 2 ppl have consciousness at the same time? Would mean two distinct entities then; should’ve redone that part Anyways: MOTY 2024!!!!
I think it has to do with the fact she almost revived her? Since she didn’t finish that termination process and then instead of injecting the switch to her veins she did it directly into her heart? Idk 😂 definitely agree about the ending though the blood spray was completely unnecessary
The movie made it clear they don’t share a consciousness, even though it sometimes confusingly alluded to it. Neither has any idea what the other is even doing. It’s more accurate to say they share a life force. But aside from that, they’re two completely different beings. Although the movie can’t seem to decide if it’s one or the other.
The absurdity of the blood bath is exactly the point IMO-it highlights how ridiculous it is that Monstro Elisasue would still be concerned with hosting the show and appeasing stakeholders. The bloodbath emphasizes how stupid the world she lives in is. I also like to think of it the moment Elisabeth comes to her senses and says: "Fuck all of this, and all of you especially!" The tragedy is the self-destruction it took to get there.
@@jimmyle320 At that point the movie turns into a cartoony caricature. Can’t get your message across effectively by loony tuning your characters. The guy screaming monster was goofy as hell.
First I thought Richard Simmons must be turning in his grave. They stole his life. Ending I found ridiculous I’ll never look at calamari in the same way.
That's my question too - because if that's the case , then what would be the point? The concept would be closer to giving birth to a beautiful daughter rather than having a product reverse the aging process
@@gabbyb7347 Not the same consciousness. Yes, they acted against each other. But the concept works because it is similar to hating ourselves, hurting ourselves, and trying to stop doing the things we know are not good for us. It is as if we are split in two or opposites but we are one.
@@rgcgful but if they don't share the same conscience, then they are two separate beings - and what would be the advantage to the Demi Moore character? She would not be the one experiencing the benefit of being young again - she is just serving as a source of energy for the younger woman that was created from her DNA - it's almost like creating a clone instead of the original being made younger- again - it doesn't really seem to benefit the original person
Major plot hole. One has no idea what the other one is doing. Which makes them totally different people. That's the biggest flaw. If the consciousness was switched from body to body then it would be one person and it would make sense, but the movie needs conflict between them so it disregards it's own plot rule. Demmi Moore's character would never sign up for that deal since ther is no change for her except for the worse.
Elizabeth thought her life was over and in her despair she took a risk... believing or hoping it was the answer. The Substance sounded like a pretty good option... a better version of yourself. So she jumped in with both-feet, though sketchy. Women routinely have sketchy, low-priced, poorly researched surgeries that end in disfigurement. They too believe or hope it will improve their lives.
Exactly. Sharing a consciousness would have made it more interesting. Seeing that she would be the one actively destroying herself in an attempt to hold on to her youth. It would make for an interesting moral dilemma. What they gave us is essentially someone letting someone else hijacking their health and time with zero benefits to them. That’s a horrible deal. Plus the organization running this thing doesn’t seem to have any overarching goals. They just give this for free, but what the hell is the end goal for them? To that extent, why would the guy even suggest the substance to her? It doesn’t benefit him in any way. So many gaps in logic with this movie, it’s frustrating.
Wooow heart still racing not for the paint hearted its rather bloody and the story i throught there were few gaps that didni't make sense to me however would I pay to see it again probably not going to watch snow white and severn dwrafs so it did its job
I saw the movie and I loved it. However I did not view this as a horror movie but rather a reality Hair dye eyelash extensions Botox facelifts implants lifts liposuction tummy tuck does any of this sound familiar? And in the end if any of this isn't done right we end up looking like the monster in the end. Men do not age any differently than women
Women and women in the entertainment industry are not the same thing. Does anyone fire the physicist, or a banker woman for her looks, or ovaries. Holiwood is a world for itself, I am not sure this is a general stance in wider social scape.

Where is the analysis? Is it in the room with us?
It reminded me so much of the work of David Cronenberg his one with Jeremy Irons as twins.
