Fellow commenters, Sinister Cinema isn't kidding... this movie is absolutely amazing! I ended up having conversations with other movie goers in the theater after this movie ended. That never happens! The other movie goers were all just as stunned as I was. Just an incredible experience! This movie is phenomenal!

So much of what you described is exactly what I went through, including the clapping when credits rolled. I couldn't help it. Just watched this with my girlfriend, THIS WAS A SOLID 9/10 holy shit, what an emotional ride that was! Gorgeously directed, stylish but everything I wanted from Neon Demon, it actually SAID something and did soooo much. Made an instagram story post about loving it and saying it was a one up from her previous film Revenge, and the director liked it!!! Blessed film

I LOVE the new trailers that show the crowd's reactions!! That is SO smart of them!! I love horror movies, including body horror, and I can't wait to see this movie! I recently watched her first movie, Revenge, and it was SO good! Coralie has a great, artsy, gutsy visual and directorial style. I love how she tackles feminist issues via strong female protagonists and without being preachy. She also has great, and obvious influences that she pays homage to, such as Kubrick, Cronenberg, Carpenter (and I daresay, Hitchcock in terms of visual/camera lens technique).
This movie reminded me of The Fly and Videodrome. I was wondering if this was directed by Cronenberg. Anyway, I thought the movie was too long and I wanted more suspense (maybe I'm too hard on it). I would give it 6/10.
That Monstro Elisasue title card killed me.. 😂😂 this movie is so over the top but not corny..so entertaining so much style , very good message about self love . 4.5 stars thats how u make a movie🎉

One more thing, you were absolutely right about the julie darling film. I loved it so much I ordered it on amazon (best quality on dvd) now I love this one even more thanks for everything.. love y’all big fan.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more powerful depiction of self-loathing (and the price we pay for it) in a film. Going in, I had no idea I’d get such a moving meditation on the ways we hate (and hurt) ourselves. At the same time, it was also insanely entertaining, viscerally gory, an absolutely revolting rollercoaster ride of blood and guts. Everyone involved took a big swing on this, and it paid off. I agree, it is the best movie I’ve seen this year, horror or otherwise.
Just watched this movie last night and it's f***in phenomenal. I like weird movies, but not when they're weird just for the sake of being weird. The Substance was definitely strange, but it also had a point to make, and it pulls absolutely no punches. It's now in my top 3 easily (so far) with Longlegs and You'll Never Find Me, official order pending as it's such a tight race atm. I haven't loved as many horror movies as you have (Strange Darling was pretty meh for me), but this is still an amazing year for horror, and I hope next year continues the trend. Also, I read The Substance has been entered for consideration to the Golden Globes in the "Best Comedy or Musical" category, which may sound weirder than the movie itself, but if you look hard enough, it's certainly a dark comedy with horror overtones. Regardless of that, however, I'm glad that movies in this genre seem to be slowly getting more and more recognition from the more mainstream awards shows.
The way you described this movie, it's the only way for a Coralie Fargeat film would go. Stoked to see it and expecting a spoiler review soon from you guys 😍
Benjamin Kracun was the DP for the film. He’s the reason the film looks so great (ie the colors and angle shots). And I agree definitely one of the best films of the year. Demi deserves a fing Oscar for this.

Just watched this film because of your thumbnail. It's super late, so I'll watch this review tomorrow, but I wanted to thank you for incentivizing me to watch it & I got to go in completely blind. So close to perfect, I had one major gripe & a couple little things, but otherwise loved this movie!
@sinistercinemareviews5420 Spoiler 🪺 💉 👹 My gripe is that both version of her didn't have her consciousness. I think it would be a much more compelling story if it expressed how the temptation to be youthful again was irresistible & grappling with controlling herself rather than calling the company to complain about the other. So what, you get to sleep for 7 days while somebody else lives a great life, why didn't she terminate it right away, what's the incentive in that? It's just throwing half your life away for no reward. Little gripes are how does the double know anything, including those medical procedures & carpentry, which is forgivable just to move the story along. Loved the nudity, but they had the perfect opportunity to show hanging dong with her boyfriend & only showed ass. & one or 2 other things that I've already forgotten because I love the rest of the movie so much.

I just saw this about 2 hours ago. Only things I knew about it was body horror, Demi Moore, and that a lot of people liked it. Holy crap, man. I can't believe how good this movie was. Everything was top shelf. All the gross you could want. As much social commentary as you can eat, but nothing forced. Shot so well, every frame had purpose. Showed, didn't tell. Amazing fearless performances. On point sound. Amazing effects. The blackest humor. Biting satire. Almost 2.5 hours but never felt slow. Had to head over and see what y'all thought about it. I agree with you guys, best horror movie of the year. Hell, best movie of any genre of the year. I'm so happy right now.
Thanks a lot Jason and Kali, happy that a movie made by someone from my country has blown you away, i told you we are absolutely crazy about Carpenter : here's the proof with "the substance"😝
The first time I finished Revenge, I knew Coralie Fargeat was someone special, but there is no way in hell I would've expected the fuckin Substance! Amazing.
As usual ,my husband won't go see it. 2 theatres showing it here and 1 show a day. Damn, I'm going alone on Wednesday night. Hopefully, I won't be the only one there. I hate seeing horror movies without other fans there.
@sinistercinemareviews5420 Ha, I married a man who doesn't like horror films, especially graphic ones. He will watch "scary" movies, but not horror films.Several of our grown children love horror films, but, unfortunately, they live in other states.
Agree on everything EXCEPT the thing about hating men during the movie. Quaid was awfull and discusting BUT Moores old friend from school showed that there are men who thinks women are beautiful despite flaws and age. He thought she was the most beautiful woman he had seen, and I felt so sad that she never managed to go to their date. IF she did I think id could have been her redemption in sorts. Maybe she would have understood that she was perfect as she was.
While I agree that he was sweet in delivery, he was talking about her physical appearance “you’re still the most beautiful girl in the world” and unfortunately Elizabeth only found worthiness when she was seen as attractive- which isn’t his fault but was fact as her age and looks had rendered her jobless and therefore useless in her own eyes. I don’t think she liked him or found him attractive herself but she wanted to go on the date to feel like she still had some value in the world. Ultimately her whole experience with men was surrounding how they viewed her- is she “hot” or not? I noticed that when the dr tells her that his wife loved her that she didn’t care, it’s not the attention she cares about because no amount of women loving her kept her relevant- men had to find her attractive for her to keep on working…and they didn’t anymore.
Finished the video now! I look forward to the spoiler review, I feel the same as you both! I feel fucking RATTLED by how good that was, haven't felt that electrictrified since Hereditary. I legit felt how kali felt, I didn't cry though, but holy shit, it was such a sad character study about aging in our society as a woman
Just back from seeing this. What a blast haha. Would have been 10/10 for me but the last 10 mins got a little silly (not in a bad way) just was quite jarring in tone. Deffo one of my favourite films this year though
If Cronenberg is a 7/10 on a body horror scale. This is a 10/10. I´m not surprised about walkouts at all. If you think the end of the line has been reached, Coralie says hold my beer. 8/10 for me first watch. The climax will the breaking point for many in one direction or the other. You certainly will not forget it.
As though Stuart Gordon / Brian Yusna were still working today and had decided to make a movie exploring being an aging female celebrity with a $20 million budget…. I think I’d like to see this director just do a straight up action movie next. Some of the best scenes in this movie were filmed like they could have been dropped into a pretty brutal action / thriller from the last 10 years or so. Also some of the most memorable scenes in Revenge are great action set pieces.
Incredible movie- and while its the best performance of Demi Moore's career you just know the academy is going to ignore it because of what "type" of movie it is
I didn't see it as 'objectifying', it was about using your body as a commodity, the desire to remain young forever and to crave the love of strangers will ultimately destroy you.
Just came back from a packed theater of the movie (to my surprise). For me 9/10. I got that feeling when a movie should be over...but it keeps on going. Last 15-20 minutes unnecessary. Several in the audience started laughing. We Get the message...no need for pummeling the audience with it. The experience suffered for it.
I watched it yesterday. The premise could ONLY work if they shared their consciousness but they DON'T. They merely take turns. It doesn't benefit her in ANY way so their is NO reason for her to do this at all let-alone keep it going into a nightmare.
Yeah, we discussed this. I’m not sure that is how it works exactly. I said the same thing. So yeah, that is the part I struggle with the most. But I don’t think the film is meant to be taken literally
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 - I just need a clear motivation from my main character. She doesn't get to extend her legacy because it's a new name, new girl & she doesn't get to experience any of the new girl's success. Really crappy deal.
I think they did share a consciousness!? I mean that’s why the guy kept saying “You Are One,” although it didn’t really seem that way… Maybe it was such a mind f*ck for Demi’s character, that it drove her to insanity? But yeah definitely a little unclear in that aspect but I still loved this movie
They DID share a conscious in the beginning I felt, but when they misused the substance things started the separate. The more they misused, the more she became a separate entity.
Wow!! You two aren’t the first folks to grace this a 10/10, so I couldn’t be more excited for this. Thanks for the stellar review guys.

Anyone who likes The Fly, Death Becomes Her, Crimes of the Future - you will love The Substance. It’s visually stunning.
It truly is
Cronenberg medley tossed in with a very cult like dark comedy of the past. Isabella Rosellini would approve.
Surprisingly, even with some rather 'Out-There' scenes, for me The Fly is still more disgusring.
I can't describe the joy I felt hearing you two gush about this movie. I was literally clapping at multiple parts of this review.
I loved The Substance as much as you did. So much of what you described is exactly what I went through, including the clapping when credits rolled. I couldn't help it. My gripe is that both version of her didn't have her consciousness.
Little gripes are how does the double know anything, including those medical procedures & carpentry, which is forgivable just to move the story along. i told you we are absolutely crazy about Carpenter : here's the proof with "the substance"😝
You French people are sick 😉
yay!!!
The first time I finished Revenge, I knew Coralie Fargeat was someone special, but there is no way in hell I would've expected the fuckin Substance! Amazing.
It is next level
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 It's kinda the Tár of body horror. An absolute masterpiece
As usual ,my husband won't go see it. 2 theatres showing it here and 1 show a day. Damn, I'm going alone on Wednesday night. Hopefully, I won't be the only one there. I hate seeing horror movies without other fans there.
Why won’t he see it with you?
@sinistercinemareviews5420 Ha, I married a man who doesn't like horror films, especially graphic ones. He will watch "scary" movies, but not horror films.Several of our grown children love horror films, but, unfortunately, they live in other states.
Got my ticket for tonight! Small theater but almost full, should be a blast!
Absolutely loved it!!! I definitely should smile more. They must have gotten a discount on the blood. It will end up being a classic watch for me
Agree on everything EXCEPT the thing about hating men during the movie.
Best 2024 horror movie.
Without question
ive been dying to see this one!! sadly i dont think it'll be playing near me, so ill have to wait for the blu ray
😢
Cronenberg's Antiviral is similar, & super goss.Have you seen it?
I saw some of it. Not sure why I didn’t finish it
I was already looking forward to this one, but now I'm pretty hype. I don't know anything about it other than I've been hearing a buzz.
Look forward to watching it again
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Damnnnn I’m so excited for this one
Hope you love it
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 based off of what you guys said, I think it’ll be my kinda movie lol
It was good. I wasn't blown away though. I did like seeing demi doing something different.
Tough crowd
Just back from seeing this. What a blast haha. Would have been 10/10 for me but the last 10 mins got a little silly (not in a bad way) just was quite jarring in tone. Deffo one of my favourite films this year though
The last 10 minutes is what solidified it as my favorite of the year but I can see it being off putting
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 It borrowed a bit heavily from other films like society and men in the last part for me
I had a blast watching this movie!!! I'm glad I finished my nachos before the gross scenes started happening 😂😂
Haha
New horror classic
This movie is fantastic
❤️❤️❤️
If you want to see The Substance, do not eat anything as the movie has disturbing scenes, which I did when I saw it.
😋
Cool!
Best horror film of the year.
Definitely
My husband doesn't do horror. And let me tell you every time he walked in during this movie he was like ....what the f*** are you watching?!
How did you watch it at home?
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 crappy cam. Going to see it again if it comes out here. Sometimes that's my only choice for a while until it streams.
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 please don't be angry with me :(
If Cronenberg is a 7/10 on a body horror scale. This is a 10/10. I´m not surprised about walkouts at all. If you think the end of the line has been reached, Coralie says hold my beer. 8/10 for me first watch. The climax will the breaking point for many in one direction or the other. You certainly will not forget it.
I loved every second
@@sinistercinemareviews5420 Really. Wasn't sure what you thought after hearing your review. 😜
My friend said a couple walked out his theater during the blood spray scene 😂
@@WretchedDrummer Not surprised. 🙈
So better than the Coffee Table? That’s my favorite horror movie of the year so far.
For me? Absolutely
what a crazy review. i take it you recommend this movie?! hehe
🤔
Now you make me hyped the trailer was kinda okay for me. But the way you are saying is kinda close to The Fly maybe and Death Becomes Her
As though Stuart Gordon / Brian Yusna were still working today and had decided to make a movie exploring being an aging female celebrity with a $20 million budget….
I think I’d like to see this director just do a straight up action movie next. Some of the best scenes in this movie were filmed like they could have been dropped into a pretty brutal action / thriller from the last 10 years or so. Also some of the most memorable scenes in Revenge are great action set pieces.
I’m down
No way it beats Videodrome and The Fly?! Peak Cronenberg body horror, with Woods and Goldblum iconic roles.... Surely not?!!
It does for me. The fly is definitely the closest for me, I do love that film. But this one was just so fucking insane.
Incredible movie- and while its the best performance of Demi Moore's career you just know the academy is going to ignore it because of what "type" of movie it is
Without question
I didn't see it as 'objectifying', it was about using your body as a commodity, the desire to remain young forever and to crave the love of strangers will ultimately destroy you.
Just came back from a packed theater of the movie (to my surprise). For me 9/10. I got that feeling when a movie should be over...but it keeps on going. Last 15-20 minutes unnecessary. Several in the audience started laughing. We Get the message...no need for pummeling the audience with it. The experience suffered for it.
I wouldn’t trim off a minute. The film is supposed to be hilarious
@@SuperNoseFace well said
Loved it. I swear 10% of this movie is closeups of Qualleys Ass. End just had me wtf. Crowd was so into it
This was crazy! Lol
Sure was
