This has got to be my favorite video so far. Being a part of the whole process in the Discord may have something to do with it but also, the pure joy, love of guitars, and the effort you put in to make these guitars the best they can be is so evident here. Much love.
I sprang for an AVRI '62 last week. It's far more than I would ever comfortably spend on impulse, but far less than I have ever been able to find one for. It already had a Mastery in it and it was in the colour I've always wanted (black, red tort). I'm in love. Matt made the right decision. He would've for sure regretted not getting his new JM.
goddamn, that hammer trick is SO satisfying; we've gotta work on a supercut compilation one of these days *_THWACKKKKK_* - *_THUNKKKKKK_* - *_KERPOWWWW_*
Yet again, another video and another comment from me praising the detail you go into Mike. Also I have to say … now, don’t everyone jump on me at once … but I’ve never been a fan of sunbursts, but I have to say, that one would change my mind. Matt, I think you got yourself a beauty there fella.
I own the exact same guitar. Bought from a shop in Portland Oregon. It plays so well. While I was waiting for the guitar to come home, someone near where I live was selling a later 1965 that was owned by his father. Didn’t think of owning 2 Jazzmaster, but the guitar was mint and came with an mint and original 1968 Twin reverb. So...I am now the proud owner of 2 1965 JM. They are my favorite guitars (with my Warren Haynes 335 reissue).
I’m so inspired by your thorough investigation and conservative approach to component replacement. Your buddy’s gonna love that guitar! I want a Jazzmaster now, thanks for that, too. (I like my vise or clamps with padding for bending trem arms.)
If you put the old guard in the oven it will shrink and you can put it on your keychain. Shrinky-dink style! lol Love watching you work on guitars. I love swapping pickups, pots, etc too.
I wish I remembered this video after I installed a black bobbin 920d wire harness, it was shorting out against my shielding paint and I ended up just cutting a thin slice of pickup foam and sticking it there and it solved it
I love checking out the restorations you do on vintage guitars! But one thing I can't fathom when it comes to guitar repair... why not replace all of the old wiring? I'm an electrical engineer and I see no reason to keep old wire around. Why not replace it since it's cheap?
Well, it all works so there's no point. Most of it is intact and doesn't need it. Originality is also a factor, so keeping as much of the original harness as possible is always best practice.
You should make your own Jazzmaster and sell it, I’d buy it if not so expensive, I’d prefer the Jazzmaster you made than a fender custom shop one. You are probably the master of Jazzmaster on the earth.
You mention tricks to stretch a shrunken vintage pick guard. Could you maybe go over that in a future video where you encounter that issue? I’ve got a ‘62 jm with a beautiful guard that is pulling the screws inward.
I'm debating on that. Most of the tricks I use require a ton of supervision, and being that old celluloid is super flammable I don't want to go around recommending things that could ignite them!
I love this channel!! Very educational and entertaining!! Where do you get the rollers and mounting plates from? They seem to be the items I struggle to find online - I’m building my own Jag offsets. Thanks!!
Do you know how the fret size varied from late 50’s to mid 60’s ? vintage tall, narrow etc.. The Fender Customshop JM’s use “tall narrow” (6105) for its ‘59, 62 and 65 and sometimes “vintage tall” for their ‘65’s. Are these the same thing and are these fret specs historically accurate ?
Neither of those current wires are quite 'vintage correct' not that it matters all that much. We're talking thousandths of an inch really, but I'm usually good with most wires referred to as "vintage tall" and the Stew Mac 148 continues to be my favorite size on my own guitars. There's a really good chart floating around that shows the minute differences, but I'm struggling to track it down now
Still at seven minutes in, I still dont see a black wire attached to the jack. I only see white. Or, does the shied backing of the pickguard eliminate the need? The color of the new nut is glorious. Very meaty forearms, indeed.
I'm curious what current Fender Jazzmaster model you recommend in general. I saw that you didn't really like the Ultra, what are your thoughts on the Professional II?
Awesome Video! I have a question and it would be great if anyone could help me. Bought an Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster (really great guitar) but the Trem Arm doesn‘t want to fit in the Tremhole. Do these Arms need a real hard push or is it maybe a problem by the manufacturing of Fender? Would be great if anyone could help me. Thanks in advance!
@@Puisheen Thanks for your reply but it doesn‘t work. 😕 Tried to push it real hard in the Tremhole. No chance. I’m afraid to break something. Wrote Fender. Hope they could send me a new Tremarm.
20:30 Alas I don’t think that is a half assed switch cut out I think the pickguard is shrinking in a way that the aluminium shielding is it… 😳 STILL a brilliant video as always👍!
What do you recommend for pickguard replacements? I have a 2012 avri 62. and the burgundy pickguard is exceptionally boring. Whats your go to replacement?
There's a point where you need to stop fuckin with things until they stop working. Your like " yea this works....but...I don't like it. Let me mess with it until it stops working, than I can justify messing with it more, than go to the next thing, and even tho it works,it's not new like the last part in the chain, so let me resolder that than mess with the switch until it stops working, so I can replace it" 🤣 One of my friends is notorious for this.he doesn't know when to leave stuff be
Dear Mike, Great work as usual! Just to be sure: is your screwdriver magnetized? If so it could severely hurt the pickups. Best whishes. Eagerly awaiting the next one.
How do u it ur whammy bar like that? " well see I use a 62.... we almost thought u were bout to drop some trade secret knowledge on us.. grabs bar bends it with his bar hands.... lmao... and we all think damn... if I too was man enough my whammy bar could look like that one bahahaha
Here's a task for ya.go on eBay and look at how much money that masking tape is going for from vintage fender guitars.you just pulled off like 2000 dollars worth of tape off that guitar.i wish I was kidding.cheers
Fools and their money are easily parted. Anyway, that number is hyperbole-- nobody's paying that for tape. Even eBay doesn't have listings for tape at the moment, and the actual components are topping out at far less
Good ol Dr.Dave! Beautiful guitar
Why do i have to think of Bob Ross sometimes. A little wiring here, a little wiring there. 😁
Happy little string trees!

Amazing to think it was so close to being playable for probably many, many years. It's hard to imagine anyone would have left a '65 Strat like that.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Burst being the most common finish means I get bored with it quickly

Burt's Bees would probably be nice on the knife edge connection of the vibrato arm eh?
I've never had reason to try it, I'm not sure!
