"When he was 3, Yehudi Menuhin was smuggled into the San Francisco Orchestra concerts by his parents. The sound of Louis Persinger's violin so entranced the youngster that he insisted on a violin for his birthday and Louis Persinger as his teacher. He got both. By the time he was 10 years old, Menuhin was an international performer"- coursesmart
Yehudi Menuhin spells artistry, humanity, unbelievable depth of feeling, richly meaningful interpretation, and an uncanny ability to enter the very centre of the spirit of any music, any composer, work or expressive mode. His ravishing and astonishingly diverse soundscape, the impassioned lyric-dramatic vibrato, the controlled trills and subtle shifts of pace, tone, pressure, force and dynamics, the immersed communication to listener, straight from heart to heart - this was a universal violinist, an eternal quality resides in his playing which corresponds to the epochal shifts in his playing manner and mode through the great tides and tectonic shifts of the last century. The debates about who was more 'brilliant' or 'greater'- the young Menuhin, or the sometimes struggling but even more profound and insightful later avatars of the prodigy are facile - best to just close your eyes - or watch him as he closes his and loses himself in the trance of his own music making...
Always a pleasure to listen to Yehudi Menuhin. Rarely a pleasure to read comments - can we choose to cancel the display of comments when we visit videos - in our settings? Fed up with obscenities and people more interested in their opinions than the music.
Having been a Collector of his Records for 40 Year's both on 78rpm and LP Vinyl for forty Years and a admirer and having got all three Versions of the D Major Violin Concerto in my Record Collection I think arguably the best version he made of this work his is old 1934 Recording which he Recorded with Pierre Montuex and the Paris Symphony Orchestra where he was 18 and listened to that Pre war Pressing set Recorded by His Master's Voice on Saturday May 19th 1934 on a five Record set and first Reissued in a deleted LP Box set for his 60th Birthday and 21 year's later he Recorded the work again Coupled with the Sibelius Violin Concerto again Mono ALP 1350 and 5 year years later he made his third and last Recording of the Score Coupled with the Violin Concerto 2 ASD 440 and all for His Master's Voice
What a truly beautiful and lovely man Yehudi Menuhin is...in his demeanor and character...his music expressed this in a more deeply felt level than mere words can express. GOD be praised for such a gift!
What I like about the guy is how humble he was. Isn't it funny how we watch more than we listen. The players in his era all had there own sound or style. They all sounded different.
beautiful frased; never knew Paganini could sound so tragic! In spite of Menuhin's problems. later in life with technical aspects, this performance is excellent; I love his modest glissandos and portamentos.
Beautiful, not only technically but with soul. Incidentally, this is the second movement "Adagio". I first heard him play this in 1949. He must have been 33 years old. I wonder when this piece was recorded.
Unbelievable! This is one of the best videos i've ever seen in my whole life(i've seen quite a lot) Thank you so much for ofering us the possibility of learning with pleasure.Salut,Johnny.best regards from Portugal,J.G.
all i can say for this is that its an incredible sound!..this man has only come to my knowledge just recently and already is one of my favourites. I agree with jazzmunky..every type of music should be appriciated. This kind of music speaks to you its sound manages to pierce its self to your soul. by far this music can do great things for one person if they just take the time to really listen to it and let it do its natural wonder.
not a lot people??? this side the year 2000 knows who Yehudi Menuhin is!!! it is such a pity.... how the great artists be forgotten and we have rap singers????!!!
what annoys me about some comments is the adolescent smug attitude towards the masters. Yehudi was a master and consumate gentlemen. His sound is HIS SOUND, like Bird had his. I can understand why a certain sound doesnt resonate with some people but we should still respect them, because the artist has reached those heights of self expression that few of us can, and to slam their sound is just nasty. How many petty commenters on youtube can express themselves so eloquently as menuhin?
This is brilliant!!! It is about the time his bow arm started to deteriorate, and you can sense that at times, but his lines are just unbelievable nontheless! Oh,and by the way, this is the second not third movement! :)
@RosyAfterglow wonderful man, my dad actually took some "master's" lessons or something of the sort from menuhin in switzerland back in the 60. he was a true maestro and kind human being. peace
@classicalneoc You are quite right to indicate the precision in terminology. It is through language that we describe reality. A song is 'sung' by the human voice, with lyrics. This is a musical composition of musical expression-a 'Tone Poem' The music itself evokes images and feelings. It is rather like saying fish & chips is the same as Chocolate mousse-all are 'Food' but are quite different.
masterful operatic rendition; risk-taking and emotional effects are presented convincingly, pointing to a scene of pathos (alleged inspiration was a scene of suicide from opera); probably closest to the glorious art of some of the best singers (see Callas, Gigli, et al.)
Well depends on a few factors, from the length of a person's neck to just personal preference and comfort. I've been playing violin for only about a year and I never used a should rest, it works fine for me. I tried using one just to see how it felt and I found it uncomfortable. Look up the video of Sarah Chang playing Sibelius's violin concerto. She's a spectacular violinist and a professional, but she uses one. It's a matter of personal comfort more than anything else.
I have read that at least in one instance, Paganini intentionally broke his D, A, and E strings and proceeded to play the rest of the evening on only the remaining G string. Quite spectacular.
I have Romance on a theme by Paganini on tape recorded of a 7 inch 45 back in the early seventies, the same tune played by Menuhin for the film the magic bow, however the version I have is different and I have had no luck finding a copy as I dont know on what label it was released,It is such a haunting piece and I prefer it to the film version.
I usually have a slight preference for Heifetz or Francescatti, but here I have to admit that Menuhin is great in this concerto! Stephanie, concert pianist
At second 45-57, there are a few measures that I know were stolen and put in a musical score of a soundtrack, but I can't think of the movie and it's driving me crazy!
It's similar to the tango "por una cabeza," by Carlos Gardel. Maybe that is what you mean? The song was used as soundtrack for the movie Scent of a Woman, but the original song is much older.
I think what you mean is that he could play the four E's of the violin at once. He played E on G string in fith position and then the octave in D 2nd finger, A string 3rd finger and E string 4th finger. They say that he had an illness called hypermobility, which enabled him to open his hand more than one could. But that may just be a rumor, maybe he just had big hands. There's a picture of paganini playing the four E's, it is shown in the dvd called "the art of Violin"

Paganini was very happy to play the violin together in the sky...I love this song...Amazing...
Among the top violinists, he was the most elegant.

I greatly admired this violinist he is even Able to play paganinis music which some violinists couldnt play
He was the violinist in the movie “The Magic Bow” . Stewart Granger played Paganini.

What sensitivity, his vibrato corresponds to the palette of his multi-chromatic sentimental world - and the noblest sentiments only reside there...
Truly
I have heard many violinist play this. They are all amazing. But somehow Menuhin has the ability to take me to the deepest circle of hell and back.

This actually made me lol and I think I woke up a few people haha
You would really have to give your time and effort
