Luke: Great stuff!! Many thanks for your willingness to help out and also get the gent some pretty cool free stuff for the motor! I lived in Muscatine IA many years ago when I worked for GPC.
Hi Luke, you are really a kind hearted and awesome guy helping out the owner of this super cool panel truck. Well done! Also big shout out to all company's that donated the parts to make this project an over whelming success! Thanks for the super awesome video. I always learn so much from watching your videos!
Yes, its amazing how much I forgot over 58 years. Most likely did not learn well enough. I struggled with many engines and carbs over the years. Finally moved on. Got a 98 Corvette LS1 and really went to the dark side. headers, Blower, updated PCM, Water Meth, Oil Tank for pressured start up, Alum Flywheel, 3.73 gear, On and On, 525 HP it was a beast, finally sold with 140,000 miles. My last Hot Rod that I built. Now real old and dream about finding a clean old rig to work on for fun. You help me get thru these down times. And you educate us well. Reminding me of the 64 Vette 327 I put headers on and it ran poor, took to upper classmate at Auto Tech school. they put it on the dyno and went thru everything. I had a huge Vacuum leak at the choke heat riser. I out on a Electric Fuel Pump and one morning car would not start. Took back to the older classmates, Pump had filled the cylinders with gas, Hydro-static lock up. !!!!! I did learn. But never as much as you have shown in your videos. Thank You Young Luke, a Super Dude! Dennis in Virginia
Luke, i just went thru the furnace thing with a buddy. And the day before I had a conversation with my son on the same subject. No errors on the board, would cycle but not light! If everything checks out ok, look for critters in the orifice, happens all the time ! My sons been doing heating and cooling for 24+ years! It was a tiny 🕷 that made a nest, if the furnace doesn't see the correct pressure it'll never lite the burners!!

That apart, you do a fantastic job of reminding us older guys, things we have forgotten because of lack of practice! Me, I was an engineer most of my life, and worked on all types of m/c 's, cars being among them. True I'm in UK and there are not many US cars over here, but your principles are still valid, for whatever vehicle. And your venture into HVAC also gives us an insight to the twisted brain you possess, especially when it comes to the music you choose. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike your music, I LOVE IT! I'm 69 yrs old and was a rock fan, way before you were even a twinkle in your daddies eye. Now I know, through having missed you during your break, that AIC is your fav band. What is your title music/what album? the more I hear it the more I like it!!! You are my favourite Auto tech on YT!
It's pretty amazing how knowledgeable you are for a young guy, and a "city boy" at that. You must have spent summers on a farm at least. My very 1st vehicle was a 4wd 57 GMC I don't know what they called them back then so I called it a "Blazer" Basically a panel with windows. Paid $500 bucks for it.
I grew up driving $200 dollar straight sixes from the early 70’s. lol, we always blamed the 1 barrel carb for an underperforming engine. We had no idea what engine timing could do.
Good job so far on the Truck, and sometimes it's better to learn how to do things like furnace repair yourself, trusted the Gas company one year with their Fall 🍁🍂 maintenance and They outsourced some idiots who totally botched my furnace and burned my house down.
Nice job on the Windsor Luke......Yep live in the country gotta fix it yourself.....I had to learn how to trouble shoot well pumps.....or not take a shower for a week.
Nice panel truck. You are correct about the new generation of automotive "mechanics". I think too many of them learn how to hook up a computer and just replace the parts the vehicle's computer says need to be replaced. They don't really understand older vehicles, especially when it comes to carburetors and distributors. Chevrolet repair kit... priceless!!! 🤣🤣🤣 5W-20 oil in an engine designed in the 1960's... really bad idea. Well, not a bad idea if your goal is premature wear. Great job of not only getting it running well, but upgrading systems to make it more reliable, efficient, and even more environmentally friendly. Yeah, I said it, more environmentally friendly. The PCV system keeps oil vapor from polluting the engine bay environment. A properly sized and tuned 4 barrel carb definitely provides more power, but it can actually improve fuel mileage as long as you are reasonably gentle on the throttle.
I know what you mean about living in the country and can't get service companies to come out. We were busy and we're willing to pay someone to do some dirt work for us. After calling several contractors we finally got someone to show up. After explaining what we needed he looked over and saw our tractor that has a loader and backhoe on it. Then he said, you have a tractor you can do it yourself. And he left.
I haven't fixed cars. But I have fixed my furnace in my trailer 3 times. I spent a couple days igniting the furnace manually periodically to keep the cold at bay waiting on parts. Though I had to unscrew a cover for mine.
Very interesting episode! At the beginning, if it had been a Mopar, I would have claimed the ballast resistor was bad. Then when you said it had an upgraded distributor I thought ignition module. Very good play-by-play on getting the timing and fuel mixture set up correctly! By the way, I internally laughed about the "ghetto piece of trash" chrome wrap in the coil. back in the day, we cut up a can of our favorite beverage and wrapped it around the coil, label facing out. And of the furnace? I've had to replace an electric ignitor in my fuel oil furnace many years ago during a cold snap, I'm just glad TH-cam was around at that time! Great video by the way, I always enjoy them immensely!
99 out 100 times its usually timing when your carb is flaming BUT there are those occasions where you have a valve issue...that's always a good time 😆😆😆
I got lucky with my dial back timing light. I found an old craftsman one at goodwill that I was able to pick up for about 3.00. Works like a dream and I cant imagine what a pain it would have been without it.
I'm trying to think of who's videos I have seen where they always complain whenever they encounter electronic ignition, like Pertronix or anything like that and they always wanna shill points...I think it's unka tooney...or somebody like that. I'm on board, I need to get the Ford EFI and ignition off the AFR headed 393w stroker in my F250 with a ZF5 and go to a Pertronix and Carb Cheater. Once I get back in to TN from my extended stay in Brazil I'm doing it.
I think that if you actually get the super cool '65 running and driving I will mourn the end of an era. While cheering the accomplishment. Mom had one of those when I was a kid, of course it had the stock 289, so I have a soft spot for them.
COOL RIG, You did a hell of a job tuning that Engine & very nice of you donating your time plus your Parts. LMAO, My wife & I lived in a Trailer for a few years before buying a real house. You are not kidding about learning how to work on your furnace in those boxes of Junk. You either learned how to fix it or were at the Mercy of a TECH. coming out ( GOD KNOWS WHEN ) while freezing UR AZZ OFF.
The amount of money I’ve saved myself over the years by being able to fix my own furnace and AC is unreal. Well played sir. Also, I don’t believe it’s illegal to work on your own stuff, if you were to offer your services to other people and charge for it.
My clapped out 99 GMC suburban I ran diesel 20w50 in that thing for years, 5w30 I'd loose oil pressure at idle just about every time cold or hot, 10w40 was better but lost oil pressure sometimes on hot days at idle, had to keep rpm's up over 1k, 20w50, was perfect lol.
I get where Luke is coming from about questionable Ford ignition. Most of my experience is with Fords from the 70s-90s, and it's remarkable how much of a quantum leap EDIS was from Duraspark and then TFI. I still have EDIS vehicles running for 30+ years and hundreds of thousands of miles with nothing but plugs and wires to maintain the ignition system.
Self sufficient is a state of being that is not only for the country side but also for anyone anywhere. It’s a shame no one passes down these useful skills and we end up in a society of mediocrity!

Funny story about the demilled grenade. Back in the eighties (before all the politically correct crap) I had one of these grenades in the top of my tool box at the factory where I worked. One time my lead man grabbed it when a bunch of guys were standing around a snake and he said "stand back, I'll take care of the snake" and he lobbed in. The guys scrambled at that😅. Occasionally the engineers would see it and borrow it to take to their office and finally it never came back😐
personal to each thier own make model i don t care for inported stuff but everything is one form or another lets put it this way find real challenge enjoy it fix and repair redesign it for who its for no what it could be would be or should be it is what is
Learning a lot on carbs. My question is how much of what you do on these carbs crosses to downdraft 1 barrel? Is that tech totally different from the more modern version. Note: I have a stock 49 GMC 228 truck. Runs ok especially under load but part throttle seem a bit rough. Great videos!
well after a little rib poking at least the other mechanic's have something to watch for reference if they know their business and take the ribbing for what it is a small tongue in cheek joke
Luke, I'm confused. If it's not the original engine, he's had it for 10 years, and 3 shops couldn't make the windsor run why didn't he put one of those new blueprint windsors in it?
They were too busy with cracked heads and blown head gaskets (I have owned a lot of Chevrolet 350 rigs and actually love that platform - i just decided to stick to one platform as it's easier to manage spare parts that way)
I don't because it's a compression flare fitting deal, where the threads themselves don't seal anything - in the case of this, if the actually connection was leaking yellow Teflon would likely not fix it - or if it did in the moment, it could then start leaking later and potentially be a bomb if the furnace cabinet filled with enough gas
