FINALLY a valuable video on this issue!!! Oh my god, are you telling me that there is actually hope for my plant? WOW, thank you sooooo muuuuch for explaining this cataphyll thing in juvenile or mature plants! Eye-opening! Thank you, THANK YOU!!! :D
I’m really glad I’m in Asia and out of this social media rareplant craze bs. Got a huge mature Thai constellation for about 50 USD at local nursery. Today I got melanochrysum for 10 usd.
Thank you for explaining so well. I've always wanted a melanochrysum but this kind of scares me lol. They are so beautiful though so I'll deal with being scared of it until I get it lmao
I have melano that’s growing well and very quickly but it’s not really getting larger leaves. It’s about 1.3m high and each leaf looks perfect. In the bedroom 65% plus humidity and 18-25oC. Additional light from sansi bulb. I also have glorious and it’s doing well also but I cut it, so have 2. Great video. I learned a lot from it. Thanks
Awesome! Props to you for keeping that plant happy, that really is an accomplishment. For sizing up the leaves, I’ve had success with letting as many nodes as possible root, either on a pole or with air layering, and then cutting the plant. Cutting them to let them focus on rooting is the technique a lot of big nurseries use to encourage them to produce cataphylls faster. Hope that helps and good luck!
Great video! I have used the water + super thrive trick you recommended several times and it has definitely helped, but I'll be damned if my melano isn't self sabotaging regardless. She's trying out the new "half leaf" look. 🤣
Omg, it’s so nice to hear from you! We miss you! I really do love melanos and I think I’m going to make a more comprehensive/exhaustive video or series on them so if you have questions, LMK!!! 😘😘😘
Everything on point! 🙌 I read that New Zealand growers cut the top node of melanochrysum and gigas every now and then to get them to really attach to their poles and thicken up their stems, in other to make short plants to switch to cataphylls.
Brandtianum has that same problem for me. The new leaves catch and snap. I’m constantly doing little plant surgeries helping deliver those new leaves. I’m over it. But also love the plant, it’s giant and gorgeous so until I get some better humidity for it looks like I’ll be a plant doctor.
Such drama queens! I’ve heard the Brandi needs really high humidity. This is why I love the philodendron majestic. Those verrucosum genes help it out a lot in pushing out it’s leaves!
My melano is a total drama Queen. It had totally reduced itself to a stump with these teeny tiny leaves. I did buy a juvenile and I’ve been dealing with this punk since September of last year! I have finally placed it in a glass jar and it is actually now putting out leaves and seems to be super happy. But of course the leaves are still stupid small. But at least it’s not trying to off itself anymore. Lol.
Omg, I totally feel your pain! Mine are still acting up. One snapped a petiole today and the other one seems like it’s trying to kill off it’s bottom leaves 🤦🏼♀️
I still love my baby melano even though its been a bit of a struggle. I kinda like having a challenge though at this point. I would like to add to make sure to have good air flow. I had a small drop of water get inside the sheath and rot a leaf that was in the process of unfurling because it was under a cloche.
Wow wow wow! What a very informative video on this philodendron! I love videos like this where I learned a lot of the history of the plant! You're very knowledgeable and thank you for sharing! I like the way you have the background and you're making them the focal point of your video! I have thoroughly enjoyed this video and I've learned a lot. I wish I had something I could trade someone for a cutting but I think the rarest plant that I have is my Cebu blue... I'm in my 70s and I hope they hurry up and make these plants more affordable so I can enjoy one while I'm still able teehee
For me it is also the fact that in regular northern hemisphere humidity of 60% you will actually never achieve those large oblong leaves. You DO need a greenhouse for that! So not easy at all
1 agree 100%! When they are happy and well-behaved, there’s nothing like them. The philodendron glorious looks more like the melano and is also similarly easy to the splendid, but I find it is more prone to pest damage.
I ordered a splendid plant for 185 and the seller then tried to cut up the plant I ordered and only send me a cutting with 1 leaf when it was advertised with 5 leaves at 18inches tall
Hey plant friend down the street… can you please talk about what happened to the rhaphi decursiva?! It was like everywhere for a hot minute.. and now it hasn’t been talked about like at all… within like the last year and half!
Mine last leaf never came out but dried so now is a completely dried mini leaf I don’t know if I should cut that or what to do I don’t know if it will grow a new leave or it that’s the last of its grow:(
Don’t worry! As long as there’s a good node, it will grow a new spike from there and keep finding you leaves. Same thing just happened to me. Hang in there!
I recently got a Philodendron Melanochrysum leaf cutting because Kaylee Ellen said it was easy and after watching this video I have anxiety now. Do you have any tips for me? I’ve had success with other philodendron cuttings that are known to have similar problems (Philodendron pink princess for example) thank you for sharing
Sorry for giving you anxiety! She’s not wrong about the ones that are a bit larger but There are so many factors to consider, but the main one is how mature the leaf is. They are really hard to kill. Is it rooted? I usually have no issues rooting mine in water with a little hydrogen peroxide and some superthrive under a grow light. My humidity is high 50’s-low 60’s. But I would probably try to root it in whatever medium you’re most Comfortable with. The trick is kind of to just cut them if they start to misbehave because that they they can work on their root ball. Letting them climb is also helpful. They’re totally doable but not a set it and forget it plant. I also posted a video on the soil mixture I use for mine. Good luck!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet oh and also about how big the leaf is, it’s not like Mature mature but it’s maybe about an inch or two bigger than a Philodendron Micans leaf the leaf shape is getting there though
@@Glorious_Gojo ok, gotcha! For a plant that size, I would give it as much humidity as possible and try not to let it dry out and give it lots of light and something to climb when it’s ready. Cut any mangled leaves off. Eventually you will get there ❤️
I have a question I got a propagation in a paper cup…I put it into a cloche and realized that I may need to put it into a plastic container because the paper may rot away…do you think that’s necessary? Or am I just over thinking it…
I’d probably just go ahead and move it to the plastic. The paper probably won’t rot away but it could start to disintegrate a little and leech particulates into your propagation medium. I propagate my melanos in filtered water with a little superthrive and hydrogen peroxide under a grow light and they have done really well. I haven’t had the need to put them in a cloche but my humidity tends to be around 60% and my temperatures stay in the 70’s usually. You can also always swab a little rooting hormone on too if you’re really worried about it rooting. Good luck! Feel free to tag me on Instagram if you want me to take a look at any propagation pics. 🍀
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet omg thank you! I’ll try and do that tomorrow!!! This is my dream plant and I really want him to make it and I’ll do honestly anything to make him happy!!!

😂😂😂 like a half moon but instead of variegation it’s just gone 🤣
It's genuinely mutated and completely missing. I checked the cataphyll before I tossed it out and everything 🤣

this is still on my whishlist. In Romania on Facebook group you can still find juvenile cutting for 25 US dollars.
It’s a great plant once it’s happy! Mine has been loving self watering in a tree fern mix. 25 USD is a great price!

So basically the philodendron Melanochrysum gets damaged easily and is hard to keep looking beautiful but doesn’t ACTUALLY DIE easily.
Yep! You nailed it! My bigger one is easier but the small ones are constantly ripping their leaves.
