    Hey guys! Here's a follow up to the last vid about toxicity. With everything that's been going on with women in gaming, I figured it was time to make this video. Hope you enjoy! Also, I'm live on Twitch right now so come over and let's talk about stuff ;)

      Hello, nice presentation. I just wanted to ask why you didn't add already existing research on the topic, before adding your own study into the Valorant experience particularly? It could add a lot of value if you used this data and compare it to what was already known about gaming toxicity in general, especially to see if Valorant were more toxic than other communities. For example men experience more harassments than women while being online in general, which is known, but a hypothesis might be (based on this) that women perhaps experience more toxicity while playing FPSes.

I was being insulted, objectified, simped for (also by the enemy team) and harassed in voice and text chat almost every game even though I never said anything or fuelled their hatred/misogyny. If I played bad, idiots would blame it on my gender. If I top fragged, they would call me fat & ugly. • @oakles
      @oakles 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like the extreme toxicity in men that occurs is subject to the stereotypes of gender and all that. It's way less likely for women to play games compared to men, but even further it's even less likely for women to play FPS and shooter games. When men see it they just get this reaction in them that finds it unnatural, and when they perform poorly, it's all a blame of gender because it's unusual to see a woman playing a shooter.
      Whenever I play with a friend on Valorant, we make jokes that sometimes seem toxic, like we'll scream at eachother as if we aren't duo queued and such, and if another person interferes we'll team up on them and curse at them but in a way that they should be able to tell we're not being serious. I've had situations where we curse at women on our team, but our teammates tell enemies to report us because they think we're mad because of their gender, but it's just the way we treat everyone in order to have fun.

    • @kkillri
      @kkillri 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@oakles First of all you're completely wrong about women being less likely to play games. There are tons of women who play games including FPS ones, they just aren't verbal about it or speak in voicechat because of the amount of toxic males. It isn't unusual and I can tell you're a male because you clearly haven't done your research about it.
      On your other statements that's just on you. If you don't clarify that you're joking people are bound to take it seriously especially if you're cursing at a woman because again, women are treated horribly in games. Most of the comments we get are written off as "jokes" because males don't want to take responsibility for the amount of toxic bs they spew out. Regardless if you were joking or not it's not up to you to brush it off as a joke because you aren't the one being cursed at by random strangers. So just don't be stupid is what i'm trying to get at. Sounds like you're being dense on purpose.

    • @Zarouph
      @Zarouph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@kkillri late reply, but you are also incorrect about the amount of females playing videos games, in 2020 a statistic of 60% of males were casual gamers, and 40% of women were casual gamers (Source: www.statista.com/statistics/232383/gender-split-of-us-computer-and-video-gamers/) (2nd Source: quanticfoundry.com/2017/01/19/female-gamers-by-genre/)
      Not only that, but a very little percentage of casual gamer females play fps, so yes, he was correct that women are way less likely to play FPS. I’m not sure of the 5% of female gamers are core gamers is true, but it seems reasonable since gaming has been male dominated for years upon years for the reason that they appealed to males.
      A few simple searches and you can see that you were wrong about it, no need to add that last sentence either. A game with a high female base is Dead by Daylight, so if you had said something about that I would understand, but this is FPS, a male dominated scene.

      Whalequid the data results are quite similar among just men too, the 78% toxicity rate when losing is pretty much with everyone, it’s becuase people get mad they’re losing and if they’re stacked they won’t blame their mates, they’ll just be toxic to the random, it’s pretty consistent with valorant, I play with roughly 50/50 males to females (close irl friends and long time discord friends) and it’s generally similar in that whenever you’re losing the teammates will be just as toxic to the guys as the girls, I’m in Australia though so I guess that might have a factor and what I do notice is when someone is being toxic to a guy they’ll just call him a cunt or “trash at the bottom” etc whereas with the women it’s almost always “get back in the kitchen” or “go make me a sandwich” or even “show me your tits if we clutch” toxicity to women is just less creative because guys only insult girls by being sexist

    Very encouraged to see this video and all of the support from your community on it. Toxicity has no place in gaming. Games are for fun, not for bullying. It's sad to see how casual and common sexism, homophobia, and racism have become.
    But these videos are absolutely helping. The world needs to know. People should be held accountable for what they say.
    I can't wait to see what else you have, and would love to brainstorm ideas on solutions to toxicity in gaming. I'm very passionate about it as well and have been doing some research/data collection of my own. Keep up the positive vibes. Cheers.

    Thank you so much for spreading the awareness about toxicity in general and here against women. I started playing Valorant and liked the game very much till I started playing ranked with push to talk. I play on EU servers and it’s so often That I just say something gamerelated and then immediately get called out by a male or rarely even female as female and stuff.
    The weirdest things I experienced was my second time on Breeze a couple of days ago.
    I came into a group with a quite toxic Sage that kept on „giving advice“ through tough situations so loud that you couldn’t even hear footsteps anymore and he kept on blaming a female Jett for kind of anything and picked on my female friend for no reason.
    But to the most craziest part: I protected my friend and Jett cause she was polite and good even though he kept on saying she wasn’t. And then he started calling me Baby and his future wife and I told him several times to stop doing that and even told him I had a girlfriend (which I actually have but he didn’t care) I have to add I was the worst player cause it was a new map for me and I picked Breach for the first time ever and just for fun and had no idea how to use him and ended up with only one Kill but also with several plants and defuses cause the male Sage never left me alone and always rushed in in order to „protect me“ and getting all of the kills😅
    It ended up with my friend muting everyone except me and the respectful male Sova on our team, Jett and Sage keeping on fighting over something in a language that sounded Turkish to me and me being carried, annoyed and confused by Sage at the very same time....
    It was a very unpleasant situation but hey that was my worst experience so far soooo...
    also there are many male Gamers that are very respectful and helpful especially when we have one or two toxic guys in our team.
    So Shoutout to all of you friendly fellows: THANKS MAN👏👏👏

      For point 2, its kinda chicken and egg problem. people have suggestion that women is more often not playing a game of any kind. This is not being sexist, but i dont rmb theres a solid explanation to this. For ex, less women play chess than men, even tho the game have been established for very long time. This obviously create different top tier player pool for each gender (assuming fixed percentage of players reach top tier). With how esports have mostly man in the teams, this create false suggestion that woman cant play at top tier, even tho there is probably player at this level but dont want to show in public. And because the community is more toxic, less woman want to join the game.
      Sorry for the long essay xd

But then I told them that my gf is the one carrying (with her permission because she doesn't generally like letting randos know) and they told me to stop lying to them about her being a girl... I could hear their brain cells short circuit from here. Women are sensitive? Show a boy a woman is dropping 41 bombs and he immediately cries and wets his bed at night clinging on to his 20 kills. Valorant is one of the less-toxic games I've played, most of the men I've played with will only ask for socials (mostly snap) and pics. I used to play Overwatch and my experience was very different, I was often given the more toxic reactions like rape threats and constant misogynistic jokes. Although the two experiences were very different neither one is better than the other, please just respect each other and have fun, a girl might actually like you if you're kind and just trying to have fun in game.

I suspect this was not a statistically significant sample size, but the data certainly suggests what we all intuitively suspect to be true: women experience more toxicity overall, and more toxicity specifically on account of their gender while gaming. The fact that any somewhat randomized sample of female gamers would see rates of toxicity as high as *fifty percent* is flatly ridiculous. It's 2021 , and this is a pathetic state of affairs for gaming, e-sports, and VALORANT. We all have to do better.
