Professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) knows the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) is moving to seize control of the wizarding world. Unable to stop him alone, he entrusts Magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) to lead an intrepid team of wizards, witches and one brave Muggle baker on a dangerous mission, where they encounter old and new beasts and clash with Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers. But with the stakes so high, how long can Dumbledore remain on the sidelines?

The film will be distributed worldwide in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures.
I love the fact that in fantastic beasts we see adult wizards and witches. Their magic is complex and non verbal. Whereas in Harry Potter, just like Harry we were all introduced to the wizarding world. So the spells were simple and verbal.
Well yeah they’re kids. They talk about verbal and nonverbal spells a lot in the later books
@@dariel7001 yep
Too much non verbal magic imo. It was spexified how extremely difficult it was to perform in the books so I really dislike your average wizard dueling without uttering a single word. It said it required lots of concentration and unless your dumbledore or grindelwald I don’t see how you have that when someone / multiple ppl are trying to kill you
@@indusingh2013 maybe I remember wrong then. I’m 99% sure people rarely did so in combat though
@@stillcold Nah, pretty much most of the adults wizards can do non-verbal, i imagine the Unforgivables arent as powerful or cant be cast non-verbal tho and in the latter parts of HP all the enemies pretty much chug Unforgivables left/right xd
I mean, forget the spells, watching Dumbledore and Grindelwald chatting calmly in a tea house is already enchanting!
Very strong Xavier and Magneto vibes.
Grindelwald strikes me as more of a coffee person. So curious to see what he orders.
@@PeterTheMightyPygmyPuff Grindelwald: "I'd like my coffee black, like my soul."
I think their chemistries are off the roof
Dumbledore chatted calmly
Jude Law is probably the best casting for young Dumbledore. He really got the charm and likeability of that character
NO
Absolutely
It's better if they let every characters wear the wizard/witch outfit not Muggle outfits. LOL
Amen
While I do have my issues with the Fantastic Beasts movies, I will admit Jude Law is a great choice for Dumbledore.
Being a potterhead sometimes feels like being stuck in an era you don't want to let go of. Love that this saga is taking us to the "grown up" wizarding world, feels like a natural to move forward to after hogwarts
100% when they ended it was sad. Fantastic beast os the best thing to happen
what else can I add to this, it is really indescribable how we feel about it.
Just true! 😶😶
Yes man. Moving on is a part of life.
I love how it looks less dark than previous parts and more like first chapters of HP with a lot of jokes and funny moments but at the same time Mads is totally badass villain who will probably do some big dark things.
Absolutely no need for this movie. Fantastic beasts has nothing to do with Harry Potter. A story of another story within another story to explain why this or that happened in HP.
No one cares this movie is tray wreck.!!!!
@@MrUssy101
You're such a troll. 👹
It has everything to do with HP, because you're not only seeing important events that will eventually lead up to the next wizarding war, but you're also learning more about why Dumbledore becomes "Dumbledore", and why he becomes such a staunch champion for muggles and muggle borns, as well as many aspects of his character and past, that we still only know pieces of in HP.
It definitely has EVERYTHING to do with HP.
And what is a tray wreck? 😂
Idk honestly to me these movies feel like a big joke based on the HP universe. Even if the original HP movies (especially the first ones being more lighthearted) had some funny moments you could still take them seriously. Here like in the other fantastic beast movies the jokes seem really forced and there's constant random stupidity just happening. Idk this feels like smth else than Harry Potter universe entirely. These movies in general retcon way too many things and feel like HP movies without the soul that they had, only there to milk money out of the franchise
@@MrUssy101
What a tray wreck? 🤔
True... Its nice to have some light 🌹
Newt is such an honest, pure and kind character.. it feels weird seeing him in the middle of war. I really hope that somehow Tina will be there to support him.. they should have their moment. I'm so excited, the cast is amazing!

What!!!!
Man, Tina is really being kept a secret in the trailers. Is she even gonna be in the movie or make a cameo near the end?
same, i am nervous that tina wont appear in this movie
She was left behind as an auror in the US. This movie is based in the UK.
Well she is credited for being in the movie but I have a feeling that she might only show up in the third act
The actress was pregnant during The filming, it's The only excuse
Who is tina? Is she the one katherine wasterson played? newt love interest? I really need to rewatch both movies before this one, I forgot almost all of it already
I loved the moviee so much, Jude did such an amazing job portraying Albus , the way he talked, the way he carried himself with knowledge of how powerful he was but also with carefulness... this was by far favourite of these 3 movies, it felt really special to get to see him interact with his brother, seeing the friendship of Minerva and Albus in early times , hearing them talk about Ariana... i was so happy when i left the cinema, movies really make our lifes richer
Wholeheartedly agree ! I also loved it so much. I feel like in his one we got to know another version of Albus and it's incredible and humbling to see how wise he is. I feel like we can learn a lot from him. But also from the other characters! Newt always so dedicated, caring and loyal, Kowalski being brave enough to stand up to evil... indeed movies and stories like this make life so much richer. Stories that have been with us since we were kids (we're a whole generation) and now are growing up with us into adulthood ♡
I'm not asking for heavy spoilers but is the ending of this movie any more uplifting then the last one? The last film did nothing but depress me.
I Agree! I Loved This Movie!
It feels so different when Mads appeared as Grindelwald but I trust him because he is an amazing actor. Gonna miss Depp so much
Well I hope the writing for this movie was a lot better. In the previous movie, Depp did his best with such a mediocre material he was given from Rowling, they really underutilized a lot of potential set up for him in that movie. With the writer of the 6 HP movies coming to co-write the script with Rowling, there could be a solid improvement. I can't see this franchise being written only by Rowling because she's not good enough to be a screenwriter yet, just a book author which is completely different
I was gonna say the same thing bro
I think given the circumstances of the recast, however much we all miss Johnny Depp, there couldn’t be anyone better than Mads Mikkelson to take on the role in his stead.
I felt bet for Johnny Depp . He’s a good actor tho gonna miss him playing as a villain
@@Erasureeraser Not really a good excuse for the bad plot. being either a screenwriter or book author would have ensured a decent plot, which it wasn't. It was incredibly contrived, had some careless oversight in the diversity politics, contradicted world building, and had such a strange character assassination for Queenie. It really was kind of strange.
I really like that we are seeing Wizards use actually fun magic to fight each other rather than the magical equivalent of just shooting guns at each other like in the last couple of movies.
Yes
YESSS!!! Like that scene when Grindelwald puts a wizard in the wall haha
I just got PTSD from remembering the Deathly Hallows games but specifically Pt. 2
@@JYang0602 oh no
Ikr! Look fun and creative with wall disappearance.
Although I think a lot of fans ARE upset with what happened with Johnny Depp and he was Fantastic, I think most fans are also NOT upset about Mads...at least that's what I've been experiencing. Mads Mikkelsen is a treasure.
I'm upset. Mads look nothing like Johnny Depp. This is a plot hole. And Polyjuice Potion can't cover it up because he has no reason to disguise himself.
Exactly. The problem is not Mads and/or who's the better actor of the two because that is subjective. If Mads would've been Grindelwald from the beginning, everyone would've loved it. If it was established from the star that Grindelwald would change the way he looks in every movie, it's a unique choice, but most people would've been fine with it. The problem is taking Johnny out in the first place after establishing him as the definitive Grindelwald and all the reasons behind and around it. It wasn't a creative choice or anything like that, it was pure bullcrap.
They cast Johnny Depp in the first place for his name, I don't think he ever did that character Justice. My sheer disappointment when he turned from Colin Farrell to Johnny Depp was palpable. I think Mads feels more appropriate And I'm way more intrigued
@@SeanWheeler100 not really a plot hole since its just a recast and has nothing to do with the movie itself. They have done recasting in the original Harry potter with voldemort and dumbledore but I do prefer depp and wish he stayed and it is a bit confusing looking different in each movie
@@TheCollectorsSin Didn't they cast Mads for his name too? Whether or not you like Depp, he still established Grindelwald. And now because of a fight with Amber Heard, he's been replaced despite many people claiming Amber to be the abuser with evidence and she gets to stick around as Mera. I don't care who hit who. What happened between him and Amber is unrelated to his role as Grindelwald. In fact, that incident already happened by the time Depp filmed The Crimes of Grindelwald!
I love Kowalski's laugh and how he screams when he sees the witch
He's lost a ton of weight. And his girl looks weird, too.
It was nice to see the Giggle Water make a little comeback.
@@ParkRanger2000 Yes!
I'm definitely gonna miss Johnny Depp as Grindelwald but no doubt Mads Mikkelsen will crush this role. But man, it's hard for me to separate Grindelwald from Depp

Definitely but let's say he is doing great too
If you get disappointed, take it out on Amber Herd. She already ruined Aquaman 2 for me.
May be you won't after watching the movie. He is great actor.
yeah he set the bars really high for anyone!

Saw it yesterday. Amazing actors, amazing characters, amazing scenes, amazing editing. And the duel between Gellert and albus- goosebumps.
The ending was a let down was expecting the big duel but guess got to wait for new movies for that
@@jonesy8928 yes! Fantastic beasts 3 happens between 1930 and 1940 but the final duel between them will be in 1945 which is the year of the fifth and last movie, so their final duel in which albus defeats gellert will be like the last duel between Voldemort and Harry in the battle of hogwarts
The duel in secrets of dumbledore was shown to give a reason why the blood pact is destroyed (maybe you remember albus explains it to newt a few moments after it)
Just got home from seeing it tonight, it was ok. No spoilers but it didn't feel like the stakes were high enough the whole time and there wasn't really much threat of death like in the original HP movies when Voldemort was actively trying to kill the main character- this really felt like I was watching a kids movie and I reckon it needs to take a darker turn for the next movies.
@@floofyfloof616 it will because of Grindelwald’s growing power and the final duel I guess
@@b12095 I just felt like being past the half way point more would have happened- it doesn't feel like there's much riding on the success of MCs at this point at that it all won't matter in the end (we know now that eventually everything works out and it all has a happy ending overall.) I hope they start to tie in some HP into the final two movies, like with young Voldemort (I think FB is set around the same time he was a student at Hogwarts).
Also, I'm pretty curious why Tina was hardly in it, and Nagini wasn't in it at all. Maybe a thing with the actual actors though idk.

Mads Mikkelsen is arguably the best actor around at the moment. Check out his work in 'Hannibal', 'The Hunt' & 'Another Round'. He was also the best Bond villain, Le Chiffre, in 'Casino Royale'.
You can also justify it by saying the time skip had aged him and he needed a less youthful charismatic appearance for his plan and decided to use self transfiguration to give himself an older wiser more political face.

Man,this brought back core memories from the trailers of the last 2 Harry Potter films.
Just finished rereading the HP series, and I have to say the most inconsistent aspect of the Fantastic Beasts series is that everyone is so nicely dressed in Muggle clothes. In the novels, it's always stressed that the wizarding folk always have trouble blending in with the Muggles. Still, looking forward to this one!
It's the way life was in the past, but in the 60s there were romantics and hippies.
Yeah, the inconsistencies with wizard fashions have bothered me too. Worth noting this didn't originate with the Fantastic Beasts films, but rather the later Potter films. After the two Chris Colombus helmed pics they kinda abandoned the idea of wizards being ignorant of muggle culture and every scene outside of Hogwarts and Burrow has a fairly bland design for a fantasy series.

@@yamichan00 I dont know, the moment at @2:37 in the trailer seems to be the ending of the movie, and he's asking Dumbledore if he can keep it after all they've been through. Even looks like the who crew is sitting on the steps after a victory of sorts.
@@vroooom I wouldn't draw that conclusion just from a trailer. We have no clue where these scenes take place within the runtime. Good trailers mix audio and visuals up to misdirect audiences while rearranging scenes from the movie to create interest. Trailers for Infinity War and Endgame are two examples that come to my mind with this.
@@cjtrules1 while you’re right, I unfortunately won’t give Warner Brothers and the makers of this franchise that much credit, based on the quality of the last two films 😅
He's a muggle though- in the books and movies of HP it's said multiple times that Muggles can't perform magic with a wand. I feel like this movie is just gonna contradict everything...
I've seen the movie multiple times now; I love it so much. I would advise to anyone to give this movie a shot!
Really wish warner bros didn't fire Johnny Depp, even though Mads Mikkelsen is amazing.
The Crimes of Grindelwald was a bit dissapointing for me, I'm hoping this movie would be a solid improvement than the last one knowing that the screenwriter of 6 HP movies is returning to co-write the script with Rowling

*Fun fact: When Dumbledore says. Three points to Hufflepuff that's the most time anyone has ever cared about Hufflepuff in these movies.*
no one cares
dude, the same joke...
What about his speech after Cedric death?
When did he said that?
Mads Mikkelsen is a fantastic actor. Way more versatile & evocative than I’ve ever seen Depp be aside from a few of his early films. Depp may be culturally beloved for his character-acting, but Grindelwald is not supposed to be a “character,” with the panache & odd-emphasis Depp brings to all his roles de rigueur. Grindelwald is a talented, captivating man-he needs to have a quiet burning-the burning of his belief-that draws others to him.
Mads has repeatedly demonstrated that he can play roles which require this. I would direct anyone who has doubts to search “Hannibal,” the television show, on YT right now. In every scene in Hannibal, Mads draws focus onto his body & into his eyes. His background with dance has allowed him more control & awareness of his movement than other actors. His ability to evoke, even when his face is still, is perfect for Grindelwald. Give him a chance to prove his merit, at least.
Juxtaposition of Depp’s theatrical Grindelwald with Mads’ grounded portrayal so far has sold me on Mads. I liked Depp for the role as well, though I had some criticisms then, having followed press surrounding the film pre-release. Depp didn’t understand-as I think is clear from interviews he’s given-what exactly made Grindelwald so terrifying. Why he’s meant to be at once a savior & a blight-a provocateur & a dictator-a giver & a taker. He’s not childlike, nor is he a dreamer as Depp claims. Depp’s Grindelwald haircut-reminiscent of Hitler youth-isn’t supposed to be the only indication of his sadistic & narcissistic nature. His complete heterochromia isn’t indicative of a dual nature, or an internal war inside him, which Depp again claims-this was clearly an attempt by Depp & the filmmakers to distinguish his appearance & render him into a villainy that’s more recognizable-& marketable.
The cost of Depp’s cartoonish portrayal (& cosmetic) is that as a villain, he becomes indistinguishable from Voldemort. Grindelwald is not Voldemort-they’re separated by a few distinctions, though only one of those is the most important: empathy. Voldemort is unable to feel empathy for others; this leads to his pure-blood supremacy. Grindelwald, in contrast, is shown to feel remorse over crimes committed; it’s suggested that he sees violence as a tool, rather than a pleasurable act. When we lose the emphasis on this distinction-& Grindelwald blends into Voldemort-we lose the entire point of Grindelwald’s character.
Voldemort represented the frightening reality of fanatic & powerful men, who misuse & abuse their power with abandon. His manic desire to cull half-bloods & muggles is what made him so terrifying; the odds of defeating him seemed ever insurmountable. Grindelwald’s terror, however, is less blatant. Unlike Voldemort’s cold & alien visage, Grindelwald has little to distinguish him (by way of appearance) as a “villain.” He looks like anyone else. His abnormalities are solely internal. And that’s the whole point: Grindelwald is meant to appear relatable, approachable. We’re meant to understand how he convinces so many good people to join him. His familiarity is what separates him from Voldemort-a man who neither looked nor acted human. Grindelwald is the reality of powerful men, powerful dictators, & the ease with which they manipulate thousands into believing their rhetoric. No embellishments, no funhouse alterations. His terror comes from how easily he could be a friend, or a neighbor, or co-worker. *His terror lies in how easy it could be to become him.*
I understand those who haven’t read the books may feel differently, & that’s okay. Keep in mind, in the books, Grindelwald does not disclose the Elden Wand’s location to Voldemort. He defies Voldemort & mocks him; he never gives up Dumbledore, which then leads to Grindelwald’s death. Grindelwald’s film counterpart is more outward in his villainy, which never really fit. His relationship with Dumbledore as young men is part of what has kept him human-whether it’s fear or residual love that he has for Dumbledore, it keeps him from succumbing to arrogance like Voldemort did. Based on all of that, everything from the books, Mads is more suited to this character. In fact, I believe Mads should’ve had this role from the beginning. I know a lot of people will feel the same way once they see the film, if they can go in with an open-mind.
As well, can anyone imagine Jude Law’s Dumbledore having feelings for Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald, & vice versa? I can’t. I also can’t imagine Depp’s Grindelwald being able to charm Law’s Dumbledore into ignorance-where Dumbledore is too in love to realize how dangerous Grindelwald is. I can see it with Mikkelsen much more.
Everything you wrote was jus superb. Brilliant analysis and breakdown of all the major players. Are you fan of any other “nerdy”/sci-fi/comic franchises any chance? I’d love to pick your brain about other things of that nature!
I strongly disagree. But you’re allowed to have your own opinion. Just make sure you don’t bring Johnys performance down in your arguments.
Wow a great analysis no doubt I'm quite dissapointed when Depp was replaced because I though he would be a great act in FB but after this I'm getting more excited to watch this movie, I feel like this is gonna be superb
I completely agree with your analysis, and do say so myself that your right that he should have been originally casted but I will still watch the film without warner bros earning from me. I don't have any issues with the actors, its warner bros fault why the fandom is angry, definitely because they made the decision based on the trial with the Sun magazine, not the trial with amber heard
I think I lost you somewhere on page 35 😂
This looks incredible! I can't wait to see more of Dumbledore and Grindelwald's dynamic
Man, i still cannot accept that Johnny depo is not in the movie anymore. I guess i get used to him as Grindewald already. He is just perfectly portraying him with the way he talks, gaze, expressions etc

The Hedwig's theme always gives me chills :")
That final shot with that line gives me chills. Hopefully it's Dumbledore telling Credence the truth, that either he isn't a Dumbledore and Grindelwald lied to him or that he is a Dumbledore but in the context of the fight/war he isn't THE Dumbledore

They shouldn't have changed the character of Grindlewald. All support to Johnny. ❤
yes, especially if and when Depp gets vindicated, WB should just reshoot this entire movie, and while they're at it, cast Gambon as Dumbledore again using de-aging in the computer to make him younger. because I can';t stand that we got a THIRD actor to play Dumbledore! one change was enough, if unavailable due to death of the first one, they shouldn't have made another when cgi de-aging has gotten really good.

so we've had a Gryffindor and now a Hufflepuff. in the near future I hope they can continue the stories by covering the life of a Ravenclaw, and then a Slytherin.

A Slytherin graduate working as a Lawyer while trying to keep their Magic a secret would be interesting. Or maybe at least going thru Law School.

OK..I think that I am in the minority here but I actually prefer Mads as Grindewald. I feel like the character is more realistic, especially when we know a bit about his past relationship to Albus Dumbledore. I feel like Johnny Depp"s Grindewald, although pretty visually awesome, was too extreme to be believable in context of the HP history.

Actually the critics are loving Mads.
that's totally fine by me it's your opinion ofc, as long as you don't support the reason why they threw johnny depp out
My husband treated me to seeing this film earlier today and fortunately it was entertaining to watch especially the character foil evolution involving Jude Law's character and Mads Mikkelsen's role. Of course there were other scenes that I enjoyed watching involving the other actors and actresses in this film it is just that for some reason the complicated history involving the characters portrayed by Law and Mikkelsen gave some charismatic energy to this film.
Finally the trailer we have been waiting for.

Precisely. Love em both, but Mads’ portrayal is already looking amazing
Even if nothing else came up, I wouldn't recommend Depp.
Depp's energy in most of his films is a bit too close to Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix, IMHO. He's not made a career playing subtle masterminds. He can't really do "cold" or "calm" anything so he did "over the top opera villian" rather than "cold evil".
The Hedwig's theme always gives me chills :")
As always

Depp was terrible for the role this is more fitting
@@mrfrog8882 No, Depp was perfect in the role. The writing for his character was just so mediocre which is really Rowling's fault. Here with Mads Mikkelsen, I'm expecting a better writing for the character. Has Mads be in Crimes of Grindelwald, the result would've been the same because Rowling didn't do any justice with Grindelwald in the second movie
Mikkelsen was my first choice before depp was even cast, i didn't care much for depp's version, this feels perfect.
Mads is ten times the actor Depp will ever be
While I will miss Johnny Depp as Grindelwald, I can't wait to see Mads' take on the character!
I loved Depp in the prequels and I am a huge fan. But to be honest, Mads has a more convincing personality for someone Dumbledore would have a connection with. Depp looked great, evil. Mads brings the charm and the cold-heart touch. Now this looks like would be the chemistry between Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen from the X-men. This was a risky recast, but it will go to next level now, I'm sure.
@Johann Sebastian Bach I see.
