- You ever come across stripped bolt threads? A sure fire way to fix the threads is a Helicoils. Here I will show to proper steps to install thread inserts (Helicoils). You can purchase a Helicoil kit at your local auto parts store for just a little over $20. That sure beats replacing the part in a lot of cases.

Thanks, Jason. When I was in the army, my section chief would NEVER let us install helacoils and it always seemed a mystery to me. Your video makes it seem simple!

One important point not mentioned.....the advantage of the heliocoil is you are adding steel threads, superior to the original aluminum threads. So even if you think you could just tap a larger hole in the aluminum, you might end up stripping the aluminum again. But steel is less likely to strip.

Can anyone explain how to know what size bolt you have so you will get the correct heli-coil?
This was a super video but it seems all the ones I've seen tell what it is and how to install it but no information on getting the right size.
Probably to most people that is a no brainer....lol....but my brain doesn't get it.

I saw someone else re-drill and tap the hole and got scared, but then I saw you just run a tap down and clean up the threads for the insertion of the heli coil and wasn't scared anymore. Amazing!!

Update - in the past twp hours, I drove to Autozone and picked up an insert kit, took the Trooper through the carwash , came home and installed two helicoils! They look great, too. Going to let them cure before I re-assemble muffler to mower. Thanks, Jason. That was actually fun.

Thanks gently noticed transmission leak and I noticed two bolts we're loose when I try tighten them up and let some aluminum threading come off on them looks like I might do what you did thank you

A Sears ratcheting tap wrench works to run the tap in and out. A Time-Sert kit is better since it locks in. Use a EZ-out to remove inserts.

Nice job, but didn' t you have to wipe the cutting oil and clean it off with some carburetor cleaner or similar degreasing sprays?

So what size helicoil did you use? What is the exact size of the tap in relation to the helicoil....(assuming hole already drilled to proper size) basically if a 1/2 inch diameter helicoil is bought separate from the tap and a tap kit with various taps are used, how would a person know what size tap to use??....or simply, is a tap that comes in a kit with a 1/2 inch helicoil going to be a little bigger than 1/2 inch but state the measurement 1/2 on tap or is it going to be like 3/8 to fit the outer diameter if the helicoil??
I can’t find this simple answer to my question anywhere....geez!!

I watched a few other videos about helicoils and I kept wondering "Why aren't they using Loctite?" Good to see someone else was thinking about that.
That is a good question but I am not sure.
So you mean you hand tapped a bigger hole to fit a helicoil that would fit the same bolt?
So my question is, is this "helicoil" what you demonstrated is also effective when new threads are created whenever you insert a bolt incorrectly inside a threaded hole forming a different thread?

Wow being a tradesman I see a couple of issues. You do not use loctite on the helicoil as it will leak into the inside of the thread and second you do not bang down to remove the tang you reverse the tool and turn backwards breaking of the tang. Don't worry the helicoil will not come out.
Thanks for the reply about fishing out the tang. Next question: If you are already tapping hole to install the helicoil, why not just install a larger bolt and skip helicoil altogether?
Joseph Buck You could do that but I think the helicoil is a safer and stronger.
becuse m8t sumtimes you cant put a bolt thru it like on my taper cover you cant go all the way thru so i am sure this will be ok ,,

nice video. I'm going to try to use a heli-coil to reduce the existing tread size of the female side of my fitting and make it match up with a smaller thread size for the bolt that will go into it. Does that make sense? Your video really helped as a refresher for using a heli-coil insert. It's not very often that I need one, but when I do, it's important.

I had to take my car seat out to fix it. The bolt that attsch to to the car and car seat wont tighten. It tightens a little but then it keeps spinning. Is it because the treads are striped.

Hi, I can see the cylinder fins through the mounting holes. Why not just go with new bolts and slap a nut on the back?
When be needed a long thread, can be installed two inserts in the same hole ?

Now you would screw the bold into the helicoil just like you would with tapped threads.

I have a Honda mower model HRR216K4VXA that has a broken Flange bolt that holds the carb with accompanying gaskets and air cleaner housing to the intake port., According to the parts description, the bolt is 6x86. About 3/4 inch has broken off. I've tried using a reverse drill bit but it didn't work. I'm thinking that my only recourse is to drill it out and use a coil. My question is, how do you determine which kit to buy with a flange bolt that measures 6x86? Thanks. I've subscribed to your channel.
Sorry for the delay, I would suggest you go to the auto parts store (Advanced Auto or Autozone) and ask them. They will be able to get you head in the right direction. Good luck!
thank for the great video. I need to helicoi my busted drain pan. any recommendation in keeping the shaving (as you tap) from getting into the pan which may later damage the engine.

Nice vid, question.... If you do this to a stripped sump thread, you are left with the broken tang in the engine.
How do we get around this??

Do you need to fish the broken-off tang out of the hole at the end? If so, how do you usually do that?
Joseph Buck Does the bolt have room to go all the way in with the tang in hole? If so I would not worry about it. But if it's doesn't them try putting a little grease on the end of a screwdriver that fits in the hole. See if the grease will stick to the tang enough to lift it out. If not experiment! Try a pair of tweasers. Good luck man!

helicoil is NOT the same as a key insert. a key insert is a solid piece of tube with a thread cut inside to fit the oniginal fastener . and a thread cut on the outside to fit the larger new drilled and tapped hole. it is then permanantly retained by driving in the four pin keys into the oversizeed new hole threads ,locking the insert in place. they need a little more room than a coil o/d , but are a better choice,as they can be cleaned out with a tap , in future if the application needs dissassembly and reassembly a number of times
This insert is made of stainless steel right and you thread it into aluminium. Do you need to glue it with loctite ?
Loctite will keep it in place.

Not sure to be honest, I have always used loctite.

How do you determine what size helicoil you need? Do you just go by the pitch and size of the bolt?
To make sure you get there right helicoil kit you should take the bolt with you to the auto parts store. They will take care of it from there.
As you seen these are a great fix for threads. I believe the threads are even better now than from factory. Good luck!

how small of a bolt do they make these for . I have a gun that has a very small screw hole that needs new threads ? 6/32 would be the machine screw that mounts the hood into the striped region so .

time sert goes down that small (hell they go down to 4-40 ) but they want 80 bucks for a kit like that and it seems crazy for a simple stripped threads . Who know might have to do it though if I cannot make one out of something myself . Thanks for help

While removing my transmission bolts at the back top section of the engine block one got round up due to lack of space.whats is the easiest way to get that rounded head bold off.thank you.
Franklyn Felix I understand the lack of space I have done my share of tranny work. Have you tried a good pair of vise grips, small pipe wrench, or maybe cut the head off then remove the stud after the transmission is dropped. I feel for you this little things make the job a pain in the butt. Good Luck!

Can the insert threads be shorted from .750inchs to 1cm? Because its a thread for my axle studs..i just have 1cm

what is the outer size of helicoil m8*1.25*30
is this the same proses with the holes striped out for the chain saw blade being striped out? my chain keeps coming lose because of bolt holes striped.
Helicoil are perfect for fixing stripped threads. They are available in all thread sizes. If you've got a stripped "bolt hole" then use a helicoil to fix it.

you should plug that exhaust port up so the metal shavings don't accidentally get into that cylinder

i got a motorized bicycle engine from china and it's made of aluminium i'm pretty sure. long story short, the mount bolts, header bolts and exhaust port bolts are all stripped. this happened on every single (5 so far) engine i've had. so far, i've been just tossing the engines or keeping them around for spare parts. this might just allow me to rebuild the engines i have and possibly resell them with confidence. seriously, it's like the block is made of butter :/

compressed air. One squirt and it comes right out. He should have done that after tapping the hole to remove all shavings from tapping the hole.
