Usually, most of the manufacturers for the wire thread inserts (Helicoils) also recommend to chamfer the hole to 1 or 2 Px 90 or 120 degrees prior to taping. This helps in preventing any sharp chips forming on the edge of the hole. It also is very helpful to see when you stop with the helicoil. In practice, you drive the helicoil until you are flush and after that you give it one more rotation (360 degrees).
The manufacturer has also the correct drill size and also 2 thread taps for the stronger or sticky material. In this way you can form the thread for the helicoil in 2 steps and the tap tool has less chances to brake.
I would also advice to spay coat the helicoils with dry lubricant (again you can find it on most manufacturers like McMaster or Bollhoff). And if somehow you damaged the helicoil while you insert it there are some diamond shaped tools that you can use to extract it.
There is also a chart to determine the needed helicoil length based on parent material and the bolt class that you want to use. For example, in a 6061 Aluminum, for a M8 screw in 12.9 steel quality bolt, you would need a helicoil of 1.5D (1.5x diameter of the screw). You don't need to get a longer helicoil, like 2D or 2.5D, because in the dimensions in the table, the screw is already the weak part.
They are amazing products that distribute much better the load in the screw and you can easily replace the damaged ones without the need to enlarge the holes.

Ah ! I've watched a few similar videos but this is the first to mention when screwing in the helicoil you cannot reverse if you screw the insert in too far. Something that is probably so obvious to those practised folk it never occurred to them to point that out. I'll be putting in my first helicoils soon and appreciate knowing that ahead of time. Thank you MR Volkswagen.

Use paraffin as cutting lube for aluminium so you don't tear the threads. On something critical always use a engineers square to check 90 deg angle from the surface. (No matter how good you think you are) Lastly, throw that piece of junk ratchet tap wrench in the skip and use a proper Tap Wrench so that even pressure is applied to both sides of the tap. This will also keep tap from cocking over out of true and in harder metals it will minimise the chances of snapping the tap.

    Few questions .
I recently had 1 head gasket bolt go beyond its yield point and and break . Can see its twisted thrn broke . My settings are 25mm in sequence and thrn 37nm its a motircycle. The 25nm went OK its when I upped it to 37 that I had the break at heli thread . Heli don't seem the issue here more that possibly it bit sooner (clamped ) than the others and bolt had nowhere to go so sheered . All bolts as adv9sed by manual were oiled . So would it be a case of less torque ? Or no oil on the heli? Or maybe the 2 heli method ?
    Thanks in advance

I ask because I have checked my finished 3 pitch with 3 different gauges and all read the same but when I received the package of coils I ordered from the hardware store the seals were broken and the coils are nowhere near the size on the package , thinking someone returned these and they had been mislabeled,

    • @bubblehead7680

The Helicoil's come in a compressed state. When installing them then they lengthen. Also, Helicoil's come in lengths x diameter. So a 8mm 1.5D is 12mm long which is what these look like.

Use a Time-sert. It’s a solid threaded insert that is far superior to a helicoil. It’s super easy to use and everything needed comes in the kit. I just fixed a stripped 8x1.25x11.7mm drain plug in the aluminum housing of my outboard’s lower unit using a stainless steel Time-sert. It costs more than a Helicoil but is worth it.

I was under the same impression and for the most part I still am, although I must admit the others comments are factual, they are tests that demonstrate the helicoil has greater "pull out strength" or whatever the proper term is. Long story short, thats only one test, one type of experiment. Basically, the tests need to be broadened to include more variables and then we'd probably find the timesert's beating the helicoil's in certain tests, and vice versa.
