I use a very similar setup. I went to all mediums a couple of years back. For my quilt boxes I staple burlap or muslin across the bottom of a medium and fill it with wood chips ( from my wood shop). All of my boxes have a top entrance, so I staple some screening over that to keep mice out. I have 3 inch shims from when I cut my deeps when I converted them to mediums.mThese have 1/2 inch hardware cloth on the bottoms. I usually feed damp sugar mountain camp style so I just line those with parchment paper. All of my entrance reducers already have 1/2 inch hw cloth mouse guards.mGood tip on putting them in upside down. I leave the upper entrance open for some ventilation and an upper entrance. My current yard is well shielded from wind, but the out yard I am starting in the spring is open and will need a winter wind break. Love your channel, thanks for all you do. Stu
I put sugar right on the frames. Make it easy for the bees when it’s cold. I just add a shim under the top cover to make room for the sugar and a upper entrance. I don’t use a Vivaldi board or entrance reducer. The sugar will absorb the humidity and make it easier for the bees to eat. I put screen over the entrances to keep mice out. If dead moldy bees build up and clog the entrance your in trouble. I also put pollen patties on top of the frames. I’m in PA.
"Hello girls" my heart swooned. Bees and chickens do the same thing to me. I adore them. I had never seen winterized hives before. That is so interesting. It's great you do these videos Kaylee. Btw...I kept thinking how sweet a garden arch would look with that windbreak fencing. The door to the apiary.
Hi Kaylee - wow, what a set up you have! So many bees! We may be getting a couple of hives here on our farm - though managed by someone else, the beekeeper is happy to teach us the ropes and we can sell his honey in our CSA, and we get honey! Win, win! Great, informative video - thanks!
Kaylee thank you very interesting, I ate my last tomato , it was good but hard to eat knowing I have to wait so long before the next one. God Bless you honey.
Hey Calie. Sorry if I spelled your name wrong. Do hives NEED a lot of sunlight in winter to survive? What if I can only have my hive in shade all winter, yet sun in all summer. Will bees far well?
You could, but I’m actually researching too much ventilation and the lifecycle of varroa mites. 🤔 my study is based off of colony rescues and cut outs vs hives. I’ll have more information on it in a few years.
The Honeystead I would definitely be interested in seeing that! I need to research rescuing a hive out of a wall. We have a friend with an old house on their property with a huge hive in one of the walls. If you have any suggestions, I’ll happily listen. Windmillfarmsms@gmail.com -Cat
thank you! could have done without the music; would have loved to hear the bees instead! Was wondering if you had any honey frames in the hive, or are you just feeding the candy board all winter?
Father had honey bees and the winter of 1978 had to be the worst the first week of october it hit negitive temp 0 - out of 20 hives he didnt lose a single hive none of the hives were not rapped no special chip boxes nothing and when it hit 0 it stay at 0 till april
Beekeeping was a lot easier back then. There has been many factors that has caused our bees to struggle since then. I wouldn’t wish any day for Bees back then.
You should get with crown bees and do a show about native bees. Once I learned about those and that they dont sting lots of bees became less scary to be around for me
I think you were calling your "Inner Cover" a "Vivaldi Board." Your quilt box actually mimic's a Vivaldi board. and the spacing with under your screen takes the place of a "shim"
They should be nice and snug underneath those covers. Those are nice and solid made too. They should last a long time. Thanks for the video.
So far it has worked well though out the years ❤️❤️❤️
Plus side of beekeeping in Santa Barbara CA, Cold is 40 at night and somewhere in town flowers are in bloom :)

Great tip about turning your entrance reducers upside down. Love that idea

I first started doing sugar on newspaper, but the bees love our sugar candy! I can’t wait to share how we make it ❤️
The Honeystead me too.

Fantastic Kaylee!! Love the idea with the quilts and shavings. Well done!!
Thank you ❤️ it gives you an idea to use what you have and help you from having to buy an already made one :)
great video. I am a firm believer in Quilt boxes to help take care of the moisture problems in my hives.

Kaylee thank you very interesting, I ate my last tomato , it was good but hard to eat knowing I have to wait so long before the next one. God Bless you honey.
This is what I really need to learn for next year. Winterizing to our new below freezing for weeks on end weather

bravo 10/10👍💚
Thanks for teaching us about how to winterize bees.
Very welcome 🐝❤️🐝
I know this sounds like a silly question, but your stapler was super quiet. What kind is it?
Чудова огорожа для кочової пасіки👍
So cool! Love your work! :D
Thank you ❤️
Newbie question, in your vent box, could you take out the pine shavings and burlap sack in summer to allow them ventilation year round? -Cat

Another question. Why would you not just leave the bees more of their honey reserves rather than the sugar?
Where did you get that Vivaldi board with the screen bottom?
You are a very successful woman

cant wait for the sugar brick. good info, dig the set up.

Hi u need bee keeper to work with you
good 👍 👍 👍
lmao enjoy the heat while you can
Curious, why the fence?
We use it for a wind break and it helps with snow drifts.
Makes perfect sense, thanks!
I had no idea it was so much work!!!

I’ll check them out ❤️
