Aaron Copland (1900-1990) is one of the most famous American composers; his music has been heard all over in political as well as in public events, and it has been since honored or parodied by several composers after him. His first period is however a bit of an obscure time, as he ascribed to modernism and postromanticism. His ballet Hear Ye, Hear Ye! belongs to that period following the Roaring Twenties as the Prohibition crime and mafia stories ran rife.

Copland considered making a suite of extracts from this, but in the end decided to drop it entirely during his lifetime. So it has a strange sort of half-life in his catalogue.
