    I flew in and out of the old Riem airport a few times in the '70's, but haven't been through the new airport yet - it looks superb, a bit different to Riem and a lot more traffic!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and for sharing your very personal feedback! Riem was very small, but also very close to the city of Munich. The "new" airport is much larger, but also far away from the city of Munich. The old airport had been closed after the opening of the new airport.

    Hi Captian great video as always. I´m wondering why the brakes got so hot after landing with autobrake low. As a consequence of this do you activate the brake fans the entire time on ground? Thank you. looking forward for upcoming videos.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching, your good feedback and your question! It depends. We usually delay the activation of the brake fans to about 5 minutes after landing when the temperatures are stabilized to avoid thermal oxidation of the carbon brakes. In general, we prefer to use the brake fans during taxi out instead of taxi in.

    The joystick shot was a bonus! May I ask why does it need to be moved constantly- is it to balance the plane and keep the nose straight? Do you need to turn the steering wheel much to turn the nose wheel once on the ground?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and for your helpful feedback! Small sidestick inputs are usually needed to keep the plane along the planned vertical and lateral path. Changes of the wind and the atmospheric conditions divert the plane from the path and the sidestick inputs brings the plane back on path. With no wind and no changes in atmospheric conditions, the plane would stay on its path without additional sidestick inputs. The steering wheel which we use on the ground (we call it tiller) usually only needs small inputs to keep the plane on the centerline of the taxiways. During turns, larger inputs are required.

    Also Sir, you have a great CRM ethos which instils very good confidence within the flightdeck, you seem like a very good Captain, someone that asks opinions, seeks answers from someone that is a lower rank than you, allows that person to make decisions without over ruling them, just because their way of flying doesn't 'fit in' with your way and adapting (and accepting) that each person is different. You are a credit to your company (Eurowings) are you a line/training Captain?

    Question at 6:06 your speed had crept up to 300 kts you had set 270 kts, am I doing wrong by deploying speedbrakes in the simulator to control the speed at the expense of descent rate, was it a case that due to constraints of ATC requiring you to be at a certain altitude by a certain waypoint (TITIG) that the speed is allowed to creep up?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      The speed increased to 300 knots because of the selected vertical speed. The vertical speed has priority here. The flightdirector/autopilot sets the pitch to maintain the selected vertical speed. If with thrust at idle the speed increases, the only method to avoid or reduce it would be to use the speedbrakes. I think, there was not speed limit at this point, but we expected some upcoming altitude restrictions.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks for watching and your great feedback! During CAT 3 approaches in foggy weather with autoland, we have to use the autothrust per standard operating procedure. During all other flights, the pilot flying decides if she or he wants to land with or without autothrust. Different pilots have very different ideas about the use of autothrust. Airbus recommends the use of autothrust during all phases of flight, even during manual flight.

    What does it mean when the controller says expect non-standard in regards to a runway?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Good question! Usually, if you arrive from the south, you get moth probably the southern runway and if you arrive from the north, you get most of the time the northern runway. This helps to declutter the general traffic. If I remember right, the southern runway was not available on a short notice, so we had to land on the northern runway with our flight from the south.

      Thanks for your good feedback and the question! We do a VLS check. This means, we compare the VLS on the primary flight display with the VLS on the MCDU. The MCDU VLS is calculated on the basis of the entered weight from the loadsheet and the VLS on the PFD is based on aerodynamical data (angle of attack) and our entered center of gravity location. If the VLS on the PFD is higher than the MCDU VLS, we add the difference on top of the approach speed in the MCDU.

      Making sure that the VLS on the MCDU matches what the VLS on the PFD says as on the older models they are 2 different independent computations. Not sure how many other airlines do it though.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos

      Thanks! As already explained, we compare the VLS on the MCDU with the VLS on the PFD. Depending on the software/hardware configuration, they have different sources. The VLS on the PFD is computed by the FAC on the basis of aerodynamical data from the angle of attack sensors and our entered CG from the loadsheet. The VLS from the MCDU is calculated on the basis of our entered zero fuel weight from the loadsheet. If the PFD VLS is higher than the MCDU VLS we add the difference to the displayed approach speed in the MCDU.
