Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a Japanese video game series and media franchise created by Sega. I like how the bottom two on the list are the most obscure, so the average person would be on number 3 and think "oh the next two are Sonic '06 and Sonic Boom."
Sonic 06 was pretty good but it was held back by its glitches.
Mephiles was a good villain that actually killed sonic

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Game Gear is like a ludicrously strict teacher that demands you finish a long division test while you balance over a pool of piranhas with kids throwing rocks at you. And when you manage to finish the test, you find out your best friend died because you didn't get an A+
Imagine someone who grew up with Sonic Jam For Gamecom genuinely considered it one of the best Sonic game of all time.
I'd have taken out Chronicles and Lost World 3DS and have put in 06 and Rise of Lyric, just because they are *that* incompetent and flawed. Chronicles really delivered on the story and character interactions, and I loved the combat and the visuals, and that more than makes up for its shortcomings, imo. And Lost World 3DS is a chore to play, but the core mechanics of Sonic's moveset are solid enough. Point is, they're both competent games, the gameplay is just a mixed bag.
That being said, I still really enjoy 06, but I 100% do not disagree with the fact that it is a horrible game. It was like the perfect storm of bad. But there is something so fun about broken and just incompetently made games like those two, so I see why someone would refrain from calling them "the worst" because '06 and Rise of Lyric to an extent are still really fun to mess around with as long as you know you are going to get screwed over by bugs.
Sonic boom would have been so much better if Sega didn't have to go and screw it up

Agreed, there have been worse Sonic games than Sonic 06. I think the only one I disagree with is Sonic 2 on Game Gear, but I have rose tinted glasses for the Master System version.
Rise of Lyric on Wii U is worse than 06
For a bad game 06 has a lot of good things , great new characters, last time shadow wasnt just the guy that dosent like Sonic but likes to fight him and was the best part of the game, probably the best level design in the franchise and the best villain that wasnt eggman
Exactly. 06 has many, MANY redeeming qualities that cannot be understated. Most of its issues boil down to it's troubled development and the technical issues that stem from it.
Had 06 been given the (problematic) modern day treatment of "let's just finish the game after it comes out with patches", it wouldn't have left anywhere near as negative of a lasting impression. Especially because a lot of the issues people have pointed out the years are the result of nitpicking it's corpse, and never giving it the benefit of the doubt (the way they do with other flawed Sonic games).

Most of the 8-bit Sonic games are proof that bad Sonic games didn't start with 3D Sonic games.
The top 3 on this list are among the absolute worst games EVER. They make Sonic 06 and Rise of Lyric seem like good games by comparison. It's hard to believe someone actually approved their release.
The only issue I have with 06 are the glitches and Princess Elise
@@demonking3673 Sonic 06 was nothing if not ambitious, maybe the most ambitious project Sonic Team had since Sonic 3. That alone makes it better than most of the games on this list. It's a barely playable mess, enough so that I didn't even get through the first level, but there are still elements of a good game in there.
Honestly, the Master System version of the 8 bit Sonic 2 is so much more forgiving on the screen space, it makes the level design a non issue. The Game Gear version sucks so hard though.

I understand people somehow liking games with boring gameplay or games with a bad story.. but not games that that don’t work.
Me to, most people automatically say “sOnIc kIsSeD a HuMaN” [Even though it was the other way around, and Sonic is an Alien Hedgehog that can run fast, Eats Chilidogs, and Talks], or “bAd GaMePlAy [Alright, Valid complaint], or “sIlVeR bAd” [The fact that they can’t provide proof truly shows that they haven’t played it]
Sonic has always had bad cutscenes long before 06, and this is 2006, And the Out of game cutscenes are beautiful, Actually stunning, The Kiss scene looks like something from a Modern day Pixar movie
And The Story, The Stories are all good, Shadow’s is Great, This is the Best he has ever been written, Knowing that One of his own Friends and all of Humanity is doomed to betray him, Yet still fighting For them because not only is that the Promise he made to Maria, But because it’s the right thing to do, it’s just so perfect, Omegas confession is a great scene, And Shadows final Words: “If the World Chooses to become my Enemy, then I will fight like I always Have” Before facing off against Mephiles with Rogue and Omega [The last time we’ve actually seen Team Dark as a team was in 06], Is just perfect.
Silvers Story, I don’t love it as much as Shadows, but it’s great, I love Silver here, my excuse for him automatically Agreeing to Kill Sonic is that… Silver has had nothing, he’s known nothing but Eternal Blaze… and Blaze, He Fights, he goes back to Kill the Ibliss Trigger to actually Have Something, And the Tragedy that is the Death of His Beast Friend, and one of the only things he has ever known, Blaze, That finally gives him Something, That finally ends Ibliss’s eternal Reign over the planet, That Truly saves the future… Except not really, Because Sega keeps making Excuses for why Silver keeps coming back rather then just keeping him in the Past.
And finally, Sonic, It’s just so simple, Save Elise from Eggman, It’s Sonic, He’s a hero, why wouldn’t he save her, And Eggman could have [And would’ve, let’s be honest] killed her, Seeing Sonic Inspire Elise, and Liking her for who she is, Liking her As a person and not a Princess, is just Great, I will always love the “Nice Smile” cutscene, Also, Sonic Dies, No, he actually Dies here, Yeah, Mephiles kills him, Elise Cries and Ibliss is released, Elise not wanting to lose Sonic is how anyone else would act if they had to give up the Love of their life, She’s a teenager, and Sonic is the only person that actually Saw her as more than a Princess, The only person that Let her Feel things, The only person that cared, And the ending, Sonic looking up at the Sky in the new timeline, I love it, Now there are some complaints I have [Mainly Sonic never meeting Mephiles, and Eggman being pretty much shafted in the name of Mephiles, along with other than getting the Sol emeralds, unlike Blaze, Amy, Rogue, and Omega, Knuckles and Tails are pretty much Useless] but other than those Small complaints, I love Sonic’s Story, not as much as Shadow’s, but I love it
Mephiles:
Mephiles is the Best Villain in the franchise, and the fact that people Hate him Shows that they don’t understand what a Sadist or Master Manipulator is.
Mephiles managed to fool Eggman, and that’s worth something, Mephiles Destroyed the Timeline, and that’s worth Something, Mephiles ONE SHOTTED Sonic, and that’s worth A LOT when you consider the fact that he’s the First to actually succeed in killing him.
The only person he didn’t Get to, the only one he didn’t Fool… Was Shadow, Mephiles doesn’t kill Sonic himself at first because he’s a Sadist, He needs Elise to Cry and Unleash Ibliss, but wants to do so by causing as much Pain and Chaos as possible, That’s one of the Many things that makes him an amazing Villain.
His Design is Awesome, it’s Scary, Mephiles Is Terrifying, He walks like a Zombie, He talks in Proverbs, he’s spooky and it’s awesome, and His Voice, Oh His Voice, Dan Green is a LEGEND, and I hope we hear his voice again.

The Soundtrack: What’s To be said that Hasn’t been said? His World is the best OST in the Series, I love how much of it sounds like something from a Movie, It sounds so cinematic, just give a listen to the Sonic 06 Soundtrack, I am Begging you To, Listen to Showdown with Mephiles, Listen to You Are my Companion, Listen to All Hail Shadow [Shadows victory song], PLEASE
The Gameplay: I agree with every complaint towards the Gameplay, Sega should not have rushed this

The game is broken.
I dig the SMS version of Sonic 2, not as good as the first one or even Chaos but a fun game. Most of the annoyances happen in the first two zones.

I thought the 3DS version of Lost World was better than the console/PC port myself. It still wasn't great. Lost World can't BE great. But, aside from the annoying motion control special stages, I had a tiny bit of fun with it, versus zero fun with the main title. I just thought I'd share that, it's not something that comes up much given most people forget that 3DS port even existed, and understandably so. It still wasn't good.
When J's reviews reviewed it today, I was surprised how bad this game actually was because I expected it to be like generations 3ds where it's inferior to the console version but just mediocre
@@gokublack9724 Oh don't get me wrong, I can totally see most people thinking it's awful. I think I liked it simply because I tried it after having tried the console version, and hating it like poison. I thought, aside from 06, it was the worst main-line title in Sonic's catalogue up to that point. I actually even think it's worse than Forces by a tiny margin. Frontiers will supplant it in my opinion as the absolute worst, alas.

Great video! Sonic genesis was my first sonic game 💀. It sucked but as a stupid kid I loved it that it brought me into the franchise. Def deserves to be on the list tho. Also used to play chronicles all the time but the only good thing about it is the official art. It's very unique the gameplay and music tho 😐
I always see 06 on lists like these but compared to what ive seen here I dont even think its that awful anymore. Forces is one of my least favorites cause it may not be broken but its just not fun to me.

Sonic 2006 is admittedly a guilty pleasure for me and I prefer it over Sonic Forces. Granted, its a mess of a game, but there's still ambition and fun parts in it.
Man, Sonic Free Riders isn't that bad... You just need to stay in right position and rotaion of body...
If sonic free riders was playable with a controller it'll be one of best but dammit no more riders series :(
I'm surprised you didn't put Sonic 06 or Sonic boom on your list.
Sonic 06 had some fun aspects to it, it's just that the glitches can get in the way, which thankfully Project 06 is working to fix. Though in my opinion, Sonic and the Secret Rings would need a full on overhaul. It being an auto runner is one thing, but then you also gotta deal with the fact that it's motion controlled, in that you tilt the wiimote to steer Sonic on a set track, and it's not even compatible with Motion Plus, having been made before that. It makes things really hectic in a bad way, especially since you can only move backward by flipping the wiimote. And that especially sucks when you gotta do side activities to find eggs and backtrack to different nests. And you may think it was done on accident until you see that you can buy better control in the in game shop. Why didn't they give you it by default?? Not that it matters too much since even when you go into 2D sections, it controls the same way making it almost unplayably awkward. Black Knight was a lot better since you can use the control stick to move in that while the wiimote is your sword. Sure a couple bosses are kind of a mess but overall I would much rather play that, and pretty much any other Sonic game... except Free Riders. And GameCom Sonic. And Tiger Electronics Sonic.
06 was broken at launch and the most embarrassing thing to come out of the franchise. Rise of Lyric is a half-cooked, laughable pool of piss. And Forces was a MASSIVE letdown. I’m surprised none of those 3 were on here.

That number 10 spot was a very flexible spot overall, but, dare I say, I generally got more consistent enjoyment out of Rise of Lyric. Can't speak much for Secret Rings though as truth be told, I'm yet to even play that one. 😅
Not gonna lie, most of the hate Sonic 06 got was out of disappointment. Did it have problems?, yes. The controls were very sensitive, very buggy and some stage designs were dumb (Silver´s Dusty Desert and Shadows Kingdom Valley) along side a dumb story with cool moments. Besides that, I think the game has a lot of potential to be good, I mean, look at P-06.
I personally like Lost world 3ds.

hm, those first 3 spots seem more like ports rather than actual games as they are not original games just previous entries translated to an alternate device. So I personally wouldn't count them as 'games', but just bad ports that belong on a different list.

I never played most of these. Sorry... I did play the 8 bit Sonic 2 and Lost World. The latter was hell on my hands.
Top 10 worst sonic games that I have played:
10: Sonic Generation (3DS version)
(Yeah the 3DS version of Generation is just worser in every way compared to the console version, well maybe the time eator is decent at least you don’t have Sonic’s Friends screaming “It’s a Homing Shot” every 2 seconds.)
9: Sonic Unleashed (PS2/Wii Version)
(This is the version of unleash that will make you not like the were-hog, stages are very hard and long and there’s multiple of them per area, so the werehog takes up about 80% of the game but at least you can poke Dark Gaia’s eye one by one as super sonic which is satisfying.)
8: Sonic Lost World (3DS)
(Same reasons, too many tedious levels)
7: Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii)
(Seriously this game can be so good but it’s just brought down by the horrible controls)
6: Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Botherhood (DS)
(Did this game even know how a turn base RPG is suppose to play? One wrong tap and my move is worthless 😒)
5: Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (PS3/Xbox 360)
(Ambitious + Rushing = Disaster, and this is why developers need to take their time to polish a video game)
4: Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U)
(Might as well called this Sonic 06 the sequel but it got fixed and still ended up boring.)
3: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS)
(Even more boring then it’s Wii U count part and has forced collectibles, oh and unlike unleashed you must get them all)
2: Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis/Saturn)
(Bored, bored, bored, bored…seriously nothing good about this game)
1: Sonic Spinball (Genesis)
(Basically the pinball level from heroes but 100x more frustrating, couldn’t even beat this one)
I’ll be honest I actually like sonic 06. It’s my opinion and I don’t want any hate
Literally the only one I disagree with is Sonic Free Riders. I actually didn't find the controls to be awful to me cuz it was responsive when I played it. Maybe it's cuz of everyone's play space being small cuz when I played it, I had lots of space.

I would replace Sonic Lost World 3DS and Sonic Chronicles with Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric. I've played both small console games again and again, and it was pure enjoyment, Unlike these two.
My only disagreement is that Sonic Chronicles is pretty much on the same level if not worse than the GBA port of Sonic 1

Sonic 06 is one of my favorite games of all time! Right up there with Superman 64 and Tony Hawk 5
The difference between 06 and other Bad Sonic games, is that Shadow is actually written Well, No, Amazingly in 06, While in everything else, He’s just an Edgelord, A shell of what he used to be
06 has waaaay more redeeming qualities than just that. The level design is solid when playing free of the glitches, the music is some if the best in the franchise (with many iconic tracks all stemming from it), it introduced a lasting member of the cast in the form of Silver, and it's concepts and ideas were all full of passion and _confidence_ (it's irrefutable how much vision they wanted to push for Sonic).

I love Sonic 2 (8 bit). It was my first Sonic game. I played it for so many hours along with Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble.
There are over 20 LCD Sonic games. I'd say the 10 worst Sonic games are all among them lol

Okay, but 06 had a banger theme
Both of these games are objectively the worst Sonic games of all time. These games both ruined Sonic's reputation for 1 YEAR, and alot of it's stuff gets mostly ignored in later games. Though, for Rise of Lyric's case it was always planned to be a non canon spin off game, but regardless, even with the concept and wasted pontential of some of these characters, that doesn't make them good. Sonic 06 is complete and utter wasted, but that doesn't mean its good. The Story's convoluted as hell, the dialouge are awful, and lets not forget the many plot holes and glitches and all that stuff everyone used to talk about. Same goes to Rise of Lyric, wasted potential, but that still doesn't mean the game's good. Honestly I hate the fact that Sonic Fans are just liking 06 for what it's not. Yeah, it could've been good, but that doesn't make it real. These games are what they are, so stopped fantasing about it.

No complaints about the list, all the garbage is here... Really sad to see how little respect Sega has had for this property, that's supposed to represent them...
I really enjoyed your list. I largely agree up until the top 5, so I'll just list those and state my reasoning.
#5 Shadow The Hedgehog It's mechanically is functional. Everything in the game works and is serviceable, but when you get into the mission structure and what it actually asks from the player for completion its ridiculous. On top of having two of the worst Sonic Levels of all time. It has a story with potential, and elements that I do like, and in the hands of a competent writer, like Ian Flyn and Evan Stanley, COULD have been incredible, which is why I'm happy Ian has such a large role in Sonic Frontiers' story. Sega and Sonic Team tend to be good at coming up with characters and plot beats, but also tend to be terrible at making these things come together in a cohesive narrative.
4. Sonic Boom. It is a game that feels like a worse version of mechanics, concepts, and stories I've seen before. I considered putting Shadow higher up than Boom, but then I realized Shadow has elements I like, while Boom doesn't, outside of animation quality...which I have a hard time enjoying due to the many frame rate drops.
3. Sonic Genesis earns this spot on my personal list not just for all the reasons you listed, but because it is so broken and unplayable I couldn't beat it even when trying. I tried making an honest effort to beat on stream for my birthday only to discover I physically couldn't, because Labyrinth Zone is just that broken, infact you can softlock yourself if you hit a spring wrong, and don't have the spindash.
2. Sonic Free Riders. It is a game so bad it effectively and efficiently killed one of my favorite spin offs of all time. Nothing in this game functions in a way a rational human being can comprehend. Its story is vapid nonsense that may as well have not have been there. The only thing important about this game's story is that it confirms Metal is still sentient and sapient, and can act without Eggman directly telling him to do so...which is something Rivals 2 already established beforehand so whatever.
1. Sonic 06. While this is a very obvious and quite frankly clinche choice I want to talk about why I rank it as my worst beyond "glitches bad", and "ew Sonic kissed a human" (which isn't even gross for the reasons people bring up, but because it was necrophilia). In my experience the glitches were a constant presence that made the experience intolerable. The game would kill me for no reason at the drop of the hat all time, and as someone that has S-ranked all the levels out of spite, I can confirm the process of doing so isn't just "gitting gud" at the level design (which isn't even all that good in several cases), but also memorizing all the spots where the game will kill you for bullshit reasons, and also praying that the light speed dash doesn't kill you (which is most of the time)! The game also doesn't have an auto save feature meaning if you game over on a town mission, some of which are mandatory like the trials of Soleana, you better hope you had a recent save or you'll be replaying chunks of the game again.
The game has so many playable characters, and from a systemic design standpoint, is handled in a way I wish SA1 had done it. Everyone plays like a variation of Sonic with some tweaks, and you only briefly take control of them instead of having full play throughs. If you didn't find them fun they aren't a large part of the game, but if you did there is dlc where you can have more of them. Unfortunately outside of Sonic (because of his gems and broken meter), Blaze, and Omega all of these characters suck to play. Knuckles and Rouge arguably being the worst of them, because their main gimmick of gliding and climbing not working properly.
The story is awful, and does a disservice to everyone that isn't Shadow or Rouge. Everyone else feels either under used like Blaze, or mishandled like Omega. Our main antagonist, Mephiles The Dark, is a wonderful character that has a plan so stupid that it breaks apart the moment you think about it for more than a minute. Its a story about time travel where the rules and mechanics of how time travel actually works in this universe are never discussed, so the viewer has no real way to follow along even if they want to. It has a romance between Sonic and Princess Elise, which I'm not 100% opposed to, but Sonic comes off as uncomfortable in several of his interactions with her, on top of Elise being a very bland character, and Sonic not really feeling like Sonic for most of the game, on top of him not even being relevant to the plot of his own game (which is an issue many Sonic games had from this point on until Black Knight). The game also has the audacity to be longer than most games on this list, so its not even a short burst of awfulness like Sonic Labyrinth, or other really bad game gear era titles.
Bruh...Where would the game kill you because of glitches? As Sonic '06 runner who spent immeasurable amount of time on this game, I've never met any glitches that "would kill you". If you're talking about Mach Speed, then you must be dying on your own because you can't die just by running without hitting anything
"Knuckles and Rouge are worst" agreed but there are still plenty of other playable characters. Like there's Silver with interesting (as it was newly invented) combat and gameplay, Shadow with sometimes glitchy vehicle but interesting abilities and Sonic's velocity etc. only those two are completely broken and even unplayable. Anyways, as you yourself said, there is not too much of them as they are side characters, so no problem incase you don't enjoy those characters or what? (these are your own words lmao)
Story may have severe plotholes sometimes (I disagree with some statements tho, but fine, nvm), but like any other Sonic game. For examples: why would Rouge try to gather all Master Emerald shards, when only Knuckles has the abilities to restore it?; why would Sonic spend his time with an unknown rat (Chip) when there are some serious problems with Earth etc, many many plotholes like these in majority of games. Tho my point is that why you bring up story as a major part of your comment about how bad 06 is, when once again, fanbase's favorite games consist of plotholes (ew how many times I said "plotholes"?)
I enjoyed Sonic Chronicles. Wish they could've made Sonic Chronicles 2
You should've include 2005 Shadow The Hedgehog on the list.
