I know it's wishful thinking, but I really hope that the OG Sonic gets to quickly visit some of these universes in Sonic Prime. From the SATAM universe, to the OVA universe, It'd be such a blast from the past.
The only thing on the Paramount Sonic movies that i wish it changes is the thing about not having many locations from the games, of course that this doesnt mean thats bad on the adaptation spectrum (the important thing is how the plot is writen anyways) but i wish i could see more then just Labyrinth Zone, a little bit of Murshroom Hill Zone and very little of Green Hill Zone. But they have the advantage that most of the locations they show on earth can be considered the same places we saw on the Adventure games and Sonic Unleashed and this will fit very well on Sonic Movie 3 adapting Sonic Adventure 2 story i hope the Knuckles spin-off (and maybe more Sonic movies if we have a second trilogy) show more game locations translated into live action
I think the Ova is the best Sonic movie. The paramount ones are good, the first one felt like a generic family movie, the 2nd one is good and feels more Sonic-like though at the same time the writing kind of suffers at parts, like Sonic and Tails sudden bonding, Knuckles being struck by a car(even tho he can stop Sonic's spindash), or Robotnik's overly cartoony persona.
I think Sonic 1 is actually tighter than 2, and I much prefer its theme of “home” and recognizing what “home” actually is to the characters over the family route the second movie went in. Donut Lord and Sonic having a more brotherly bond just lended itself better to its theme than Donut Lord straight up being Sonic’s father figure. I will say that 2 has one of the best Knuckles portrayals out there, but between the various mcguffins and shaky start I can’t really put it above the first. I think both are peak though
You trippin but ok if you like a more buddy buddy type movie watch movie 1 but 2 if you want great fights and sonic lore than 2 is the way to go movie 3 will definitely be the best
@Kian Having Sonic, a freespirited and free character, actually suffer from loneliness and isolation, and having him find a place that he can actually thrive in is great imo. Sonic having an idealistic view of Green Hills and Donut Lord taking Green Hills for granted are great opposites to the characters, and they develop together very nicely because of it. Sonic 2 is more traditional Sonic stuff, but the bigger scope leads to a messier movie with more noticeable dead spots. Tails suffered the most from it, since I feel like his development was very overshadowed by Sonic and Knuckles’ arcs in the film. The wedding subplot while funny is also just very weird lol
The new Sonic movies completely changed the story we all knew to grow and love, lol. Sonic destined to guard the master emerald??? Nah... Didn't care for the 1st one, but I liked the second one even though I can't fully get behind the story. Eggman being skinny, the master emerald being so small, and eggman being charged by the master emerald himself is straight stolen from a fan made Sonic game, lmao. It's a cool new beginning for those who didn't grow up off the real story though.
Wouldn’t say completely changed considering we know nothing of sonics backstory in the games. Most of what you're complaining about is less stoy and more visuals. Also eggman being powered by the emeralds comes from fleetway.
iv only seen the OVA and the 2 live action movies so... Weakest Sonic 1 The movie is a very basic road trip movie like they took the template on a road trip script and filled in the blanks with sonic stuff and not very interesting human stuff and product place and cringe jokes this is not a sonic movie to me and the redesign does "save it" abit not by alot and Jim carry does play a fine verson of eggman but Sonic 2 he really became eggman to me and Ben does a great job as sonic but just again Sonic 2 did it better Mid Sonic the Hedgehog OVA I loved this film as a kid the voice acting is a mix bag Sonic and eggman sound fine Knuckles sounds abit to much like sonic then knuckles should and Tails sounds like the kid was going through a very bad cold and SHUT UP TAILS the voice does get annoying but I love the animation and the final fight between sonic and metal is what I hope the Sonic vs Shadow fight can be like and the ending with metal dying has more emotion then any post black knight sonic stuff period Best Sonic 2 I love Sonic, Tails and Knuckles they did tails and knuckles better then any post 2009 stuff and Jim carry really does become eggman and the human stuff thankfully is more removed and it actually trys to be a fun family film instead of a cash grab waste of time and I'm hyped for Sonic 3
Sonic is a young teenager by the time of the second movie. That's the kind of stuff kids find funny. The movie has enough Easter eggs to satisfy older fans while being charming enough to bring in fans from younger generations. Your opinion here is irrelevant
Sonic Christmas blast wasn't straight to DVD. It aired on TV back in 1996. Also fun fact it was originally meant to be a promotional tie in with sonic x-treme but had it's name changed at the last minute to better reflect the game that did end up coming out
For me, Sonic OVA > Sonic Movie 2 > Sonic Movie 1. I just find the OVA to be more consistently enjoyable than the Paramount Movies, while they may have stronger character interactions; I feel like they don't outweigh the rest of the movie. Like for me, Sonic Movie 1 is a serviceable/fine enough family movie but a really poor Sonic movie while Sonic Movie 2 is a decent Sonic movie but an overall more poorly structured movie than it's predecessor. There's greater highs in the Paramount movies but the Sonic OVA is consistently higher than the Paramount movies.
@Kian I don't find the characterizations in OVA to be too bad, I prefer them over Paramount's even if Paramount's Sonic has more depth. I feel like OVA Sonic has the right balance of being a narcissist and fleetway's jerkish-ness while still keeping Sonic a hero. Tails feels well, a bit more naive than Sonic but also smarter. He's also good in a fight (He rams into Metal with his Tornado and is one of the reasons Sonic actually wins his fight with Metal). While still being a bit of a scaredy-cat, he doesn't have trouble doing things independently of Sonic, like when he goes to save the old man when Sonic doesn't. Knuckles is the only one I'm a bit iffy about but I find him fine enough, I can't really blame them since they only had one game to base his character off. Eggman's is done well but it's pretty hard to do Eggman badly. If I think of a classic sonic characterization, I think of the OVA incarnations.

Plus I think Sonic's character should inherently have some sense of narcissism or at least cockiness to him due to his speed, making him literally feel untouchable. I feel if you stick so close to what you said about the Japanese manuals; you get a pretty boring character who's a bit too nice without any real depth or edge to him. Kind of like Sonic in Sonic 06's cutscenes who just doesn't have any kind of banter or wittyness. I feel like Sonic should be a balance of a cocky hero and a good hearted hero. But I do agree that OVA Sonic leans a bit more on the jerk-ish side; though I never really saw him as too much of a jerk. I think the worst of him being a jerk is at the beginning where he refuses to held the Old Man but I always saw this as Sonic just being annoyed after just trying to relax and getting soaked in water twice before being bulldozed over by a speeding flying car. Because when Tails yells at him, Sonic seems genuinely regretful at what he said, and not annoyed as a more self-absorbed person would be.
Nothing can beat those two live action Sonic movies out of all the Sonic movies. Their both an emotional, fun, action-filled adventures. They did those movies perfectly, if you want people to care about video-game movies you HAVE to make the people emotionally invested in the characters. Otherwise your watching just some hedgehog fighting an some robot doctor, might be cool to watch the action but why care about that fight if you don’t care about the moments that led up to that fight? Can’t wait for Sonic 3, going to cry by the end of these movies, such a journey. Did it perfectly.

The way I saw it, it's very existence was a joke in itself, When I was first watching it I could only be at awe at the audacity to include such a weird non sequitur to a fanbase who were definitely not there to watch that kind of thing. They won me over with it.
Plus it gave a nice arc to Rachel and closure between her and Tom. I’m happy she ended up happy and got to shine rather than just being the “annoying disapproving sister”. She was FUNNY!! And you know the actor had a BLAST doing that scene!

To be honest, as much as I like the Paramount movies, I wish we had gotten a theatrical fully animated Sonic movie. Imagine a full 3D animated Sonic movie without the restrictions of taking place in the real world with real humans. I feel animators would be able to do so much more.
We all complain about the RomCom scenes in Sonic Movie 2, and with good reason, but it fulfilled it's purpose. The movie was massively successful, and I think those "RomCom" sections, sadly, are part of the reason soap-watching parents and their ilk, where happy to watch the film and still leave it a good review. I remember reading several 'professional' reviews when the film came out, from your usual woke critic crowd, and so many of them listed THOSE parts of the movie as the best parts of it, and the parts that made it worth watching. Obviously, any Sonic or genuine entertainment fan is going to disagree (we came to watch a Sonic Movie for Sonic, not that stuff!) and we all think we could have done without them; But I do think the whole reason the film had that sub-plot was specifically to appease those "professional" film critics, or the stay-at-home soap-watching mothers - and it worked. A rare example of a product trying to appeal to everyone and ACTUALLY succeeding for once. For most products, whether they be film, video game or television show, the "appeal to everyone" approach ends in financial disaster and a terrible product...but somehow, miraculously, Sonic Movie 2 managed to pull it off - and I think it's rather understated how much of an incredible achievement that is.
I prefer the Sub for the OVA, also, speaking of which, have you watched Sonic X? Regardless of you have or haven’t, i recommend watching the Sonic X Sub, it has a really different feel to it.
My top 3 would be Sonic Ova, Sonic Boom, then Adventure of Sonic. The live action movies are fine but very formulaic. I also wanted a lot more from Tails in Sonic 2. I won't be watching Sonic 3 in theaters I'll wait for streaming. Hopefully Sonic and Robotnick if hes in it will shimmer down a bit cause I find them both annoying.
Um hate to break it to ya buddy, but Sonic has NEVER been older than 15 and WAS a kid in the classic Sonic games and his oldest Modern iteration is 15 so ya Sonic SHOULD be a kid

About the McGuffin part, almost every Sonic game revolves around the Chaos Emeralds, so calling the movie out on it makes no sense whatsoever
Tv shows don’t count it can’t be a 2,3 or a 4 parter saga it’s gotta be a full length animated feature like the Sonic ova movie
