Skull Island: Rise of Kong has quickly become a legend of bad videogame lore. Astoundingly unfinished garbage, it's giving even that dreadful Gollum game a run for its money. In a year of abysmal videogames, many of which inspired Solemn JPEG apology graphics, let's start wondering if game quality needs some sort of standard enforcement.

The heart sinks when you hear the phrase "patch culture" or "horse armour" and reflect on how far we've sunken.

Horse armour always gets me, not only is it now positively benign by comparison it has been for *years*
I do miss the days where we were just complaining about enormously overpriced products.
(Though I suppose my comment has less to do with shovelware - which has always been with us, at least for as long as I've been around- and more monetisation)

As Steph obliquely points out towards the end, though, this has been going on basically forever. Humans are terrible at remembering stuff we dismissed for low quality because we engage with it so little. The video game industry has had a wide-ranging culture of reviews that persists to this day because all of us have been burned by it, probably multiple times.
I'd estimate at least half of the reason people say the phrase "NES hard" is because of unplayable garbage that managed to filter onto that system alone. We had an Atari 2600 growing up and it was very obvious why the industry crashed and burned when playing some of the crap games we had. It was literally a coin flip if we could even figure out how to play a given cartridge.

I appreciate that Steph called out Gamemills more than the actual game studio who is also kind of the victim in this case.

    • @michaelwoods2672

The game developers are individually victims, but I do think that this was a studio deliberately started to grab inexperienced talent who are struggling to find anywhere else and use them to rinse out games I until they've been there long enough to put "three years professional development" before their portfolio.
If the studio has a system for taking on projects which it doesn't even have an idea for yet, you know the studio is part of the same machine and the studio heads are very aware of what they're doing to their staff.

    • @MattwosRandomNonContent

A lot of development studios are the victims of shitty publishers. It's actually a bit rare to see ones like Blizzard Entertainment's dev side, Gearbox, and Riot Games.
I remember how Activision once had a studio called Fun Labs, which mostly made Cabela's franchise games, make Chaotic: Shadow Warriors which was a neat dive into the world of Perim but was also kind of shit because of course the studio had no clue what it was doing with an action adventure game with a vauge RPG battle system based on a trading card game similar to the RPG battle system in Yugioh Falsebound Kingdom but at least the Yugioh video games didn't _start_ with Falsebound Kingdom. This same studio also made MIB: Alien Crisis which was apparently also shit.
I mean really I'm not sure why Acitivision had in their minds that a studio that mostly made hunting and fishing games could make licensed action adventure games or licensed rail shooters.

@@michaelwoods2672 Exactly this, and from the perspective of the "inexperienced talent," imagine getting into game dev because you fucking love video games and that's what you want to do, make games. And all you end up being able to get are positions on these games that you know are bad, like you don't even have any personal confidence in them, you know what a good game made with love and hard work is, and these aren't it. You've become a cog in a machine that literally call themselves a mill shilling out the worst of your favourite art. Imagine how soul crushing that has to be. I 100% agree these poor devs are victims of the publisher and their studio heads. Had it been me, I wouldn't even want my name on these. Beginners have it rough af, no wonder everyone's going indie.

The comment about an "independent trading standards body" really struck a chord for me. For a while I've talked with my friends about video games and how in basically any other industry, they'd never get away with stuff that the gaming industry does without being sued. You could not advertise a car as having certain features and then sell it without those features, you would get sued for false advertising. Just like how you couldn't make a shitty car that doesn't work or is even unsafe because it will get recalled and also probably sued. Now obviously these entities aren't perfect and there are plenty of examples of companies and industries getting away with it, but the point is that there even is a speedbump on that path.
In gaming, as long as the lie isn't egregiously false you can get away with it and the worst thing that happens is some small internet pushback and maybe some bad reviews. We desperately need some form of oversight or legal authority able to hold companies accountable for when they just make shit up to sell games, or try to sell an obvious scam as a full-price game.

Amen to that. The first and loudest to cry about increasing regulation are always the high-income corpos, the owners, the do-nothings who somehow deserve the majority of money and power in our society. Sure, a few folks near the ground will echo and parrot the talking points as they flow down through edgy right-wing talk show hosts 'telling it like it is' (according to CEOs, of course) but the fact remains - regulation helps more people than it hurts. Well, unless it actually goes overboard, but that's not the situation anywhere I can think of, so much as it is the made up villain of the disingenuous, scaremongering "Oh no! More government! You don't like government, folks, doooo you?" dog and pony show so beloved by the aforementioned talk show personalities and their sugar daddies.

There was this old series by TH-camr Spiffing Brit where he played Game Dev Tycoon style games, where the goal was to make as much money by doing as little as possible. His companies would release the shittiest games possible, spending no time on development, only on advertising. Then he'd use the proceeds from those game sales to acquire bigger IPs and release those with as little development and the biggest advertising biggest as possible. Slowly buying bigger and bigger IPs, and slowly ruining the game industry.
It was intended as a scathing critique of the practices of EA, Activision, and Ubisoft, but it's also literally what Game Mill Entertainment is doing right now with whatever random IP they can get their grubby hands on.

UK has laws in place to protect consumers. When I attempted to get a refund for a buggy broken game I'd purchased and had played for 2h and 2m (just over the 2h arbitrary limit most platforms use) for refunds, I was told I'd signed away my legal protections when I bought the game. When I then quoted the exact text of the law that Gas wording to the effect "this law applies even when an agreement says it doesn't" I was told that company policy supercedes the law! 😂 When I then requested details of thier legally required appointed 3rd party arbitrator to deal with claims such as these, I was told this multi national corporation didn't have one, despite it being a legal requirement for them to sell digital products in the UK.
I forwarded my experience to every UK consumer watchdog, most of whom responded to the effect of "we are aware of this and thank you for your testimony as we are currently building a legal case to take the company in question to court for failing to follow UK law.
The company in question lost my subscription to all their online services and I've spent way less on their platform then I would normally have done. They refused me a £7.99 refund. They've lost over £100 in subscription and £200 in other sales. 😂 I emailed them a year after my last contact, and got a response saying they were sad that I had chosen to cancel my sub but could still not offer me a refund.

There may be a later video that digs deeper into just why the Escapist is bad and what led up to them thinking that firing Nick was a good idea (since that would take quite a bit more research and journalism than can be expected on 6 days' notice), but as far as commenting on the specific events of last week goes, the important parts are to applaud the video team for their solidarity, be pleased that there's been so much community support for the team going independent, and flip the appropriate bird to the corporate dickwaffles that created the problem, and they've hit all three of those points.

I've figured it out! The Kong footage really highlighted it - what we're seeing is another MMO boom/bust - in this case it's just games in general but this is the exact same bubble/boom+bust cycle that we saw in the 00's with MMORPG's - all the big popular names got bought up by giant developers, the original teams leave, then the game turns into a hollow facsimile of its original format, and then they all slowly died out except for the handful of passion projects that didn't get bought out.
Mark my words, this will get worse before it gets better. Just remember, you don't see many successful MMORPG's around these days, but the ones that are, are run by dedicated teams. You can already see this is the difference between ~"AAA"~ studios and indie devs this year. Indie devs are booming, but ~"AAA"~ devs are plummeting like a rock in a jar of old semen.
