- Netflix to Invest in African Content: Can it Overtake Showmax? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Netflix has said that it is planning to invest in more African content. Netflix already has a number of successful African shows and movies that have topped charts around the world. The content is popular from South Korea to Latin America. So is Netflix's Africa plan about representation, or is it just about the bottom line? Netflix has continued to pour more money into Africa over the years, but it's American rivals seem to be pulling out. There are a number of things that make the African market challenging, and one factor is the local competition. The South African streaming giant Showmax is at the top of Africa's streaming business. Can Netflix compete with Showmax?

Please get it right. Showmax is NOT "an African company based in South Africa". It's a SOUTH AFRICAN COMPANY BASED IN SOUTH AFRICA, WITH A CONTINENTAL REACH. Africa is a continent with 54 distinct countries. I'm sick of Africa bein seen as 1 big country. My country deserves its credit for bein a leader on the continent in the particular aspects it leads in. N other African countries deserve their own kudos for their own achievements instead of bein lumped together with all of Africa. I'm pretty sure if Showmax were an Indian company, the reporter wouldn't be callin it "an Asian company" but she'd instead be proud to call it an Indian company.
First post, stop misleading Africans. Stop it! You know who truly owns Showmax, you know canal+ owns the largest share and canal+ is a French company owned and controlled by Vivendi. My fellow Africans open your eyes, nobody is our friend
@@LoxionBlackYou are just deceiving yourself. Go and do proper research on who owns the largest shares of those companies showmax and multichoice. You own nothing. Educate yourself
We will continue with Showmax
Because Netflix will come with it's Agendas and rewriting history and culture
Agree …. Next Africa is on the wokeism bandwagon
They're doing that already
Netflix is doing good in SA and our artists are getting jobs and they doing well for themselves
It's surprising how netflix push particular agenda wherever they go..in India too facing same issue.
Exactly
Africa should reject Netflix because of culture difference.
I believe that for Netflix, African content is mainly an opportunity to get massive financial returns using lower production investments.
Of course who don't want huge returns? They cab invest a quarter of a million and make a lot of returns.
I watched Netflix because I can see my people
WE dont want Netflix in Africa. WE African peuple must quickly and urgently creats our own streaming plateforme before westerns Come tel our story AT pour place.
Africa needs to protect the African market for homegrown African companies.
True
Netflix can only bring immorality LGBTqwertyui😂plus
Like how they did with India? I've been watching quite a few Indian shows and the amount of explicit gayness are just way too much. It is disgusting to me. Sorry if I offended any of you LGBT people out there.
Einstein was nothing compare to you
@@YouCantHandleTheTruth. Worry about those homeless kids in India.
@@YouCantHandleTheTruth.Really, I am not surprised.
Have you seen content from SA?
If they don't invest in local content, they won't make it. They have found Showmax's "secret". I really enjoyed the Heart of the hunter movie and others. Can't wait to see more. Africa hasn't been seen much yet.
Watching from SA🇿🇦 .. We say NO to Netflix, support homegrown Showmax💟
I'm from India. Can you exactly state the reason why are so many Africans rejecting netflix? Is it just for the sake of local platforms?
Can Afrikans get it together and start our own continental streaming platform please?
Netflix and ShowMax can still be there for alternative
Showmax is African🇿🇦
Africa will dominate film and music in a decade.
They speak English in Africa.
... Spanish (Equatorial Gunea)
French
Swahili
Portuguese
Arab
Wolof
Lingala
Laari
Afrikaans
Zulu
...
@@joantonio6331 The English speaking African films will dominate especially from Nigeria and SA.
Netflix spends less in African production but gets a lot out so who wouldn’t want the continent to themself…. Also USA stories are tied now and something new is needed and Africa has stories for years to tell to the world
We must wake up, Peace and always Love for my people's,Peace ✌
Jio should expand business in africa like they did in our country by offering cheap internet and then give them content of indian media with help of jio cinema.
No thank you, Indian content is not the best, Africa already have Indian content and it's not relatable even when dubbed and not to mention its Boring and repetitive ......the same plots, same storyline Indians aren't really known for creativity Compared to Africans the Most popular genre of music today is Hip-hop , Afrobeat's and Amapiano which are strictly African , even Kpop is a knockoff ,of African American culture .
Jio became popular became its Indian company. Same way showmax became popular because its African made. So Africans will be happy with thier own company than foreigners coming. It will be a loss for jio.
Business, class, and lifestyle-we are Showmax, and nothing can change it.
Future work focus ?! Sounds like Salvery again
The difference is Showmax has really good African movies/series originals and captures our cultures perfectly whereas Netlix has African actors acting in something so out of touch with how things are on the ground it can actually get comical
I am sure they are concentrated on the young market
This is real news, glad we have this channel.
They start to bring lgqt+ with Netflix

Africa need to make sure the taxes are paying in it soil.
Africa is a fking continent so don't refer to it as one entity.
We are the Future 👑
Africa 🌍
Africa is where to setup shop, especially Ghana
i dont see how thats going to work, these people want to push demonic agendas, nobody should be watching the media trash
Our movie industry is in a bad state right now. If we had a vibrant movie industry Netflix would invest heavily here.
OTT n Netflix sucks 🤮 Tv n Theaters rocks 🤩
African is a rich resources not only minerals but also humms capital.
Yet so poor
yayy... finally!!
I hope they realise that Africa is more than just South Africa and Nigeria

If it is a south African company. That makes it African.

South Africa is a part of Africa and it will be linked with Africa forever so get over yourself
Not to throw shade… but wasn’t Showmax majority shareholding said to be a French media conglomerate?
I just wish we could actually do our own things as Afrikans. I’d feel much better watching if it was majority South Afrikan shareholding.
Sidenote, please let’s push for Amapiano artists to push MaXhosa instead of abo Balenciaga. Otherwise how else will we win as a continent?
You are the perfect example of the brain damage that the colonizers did to us. Why do you guys enjoy staying divided and weak rather than staying united and being strong? We have been colonized to a point that we enjoy staying colonized. This is brain damage and I think the first revolution of Africa has to be brain reset
And by the way, before being too happy that Showmax belongs to South Africa, you should do your research, because the last time I checked , European companies owned almost all the shares, if not all. Don't be deceived by the race of the CEO, it's meant to mislead you. Stop being ignorant
I have Netflix and enjoyed watching RRR. Heavenly Delusion was on Disney+. I’m rewatching the Bourne movies in Prime. Nah, I don’t have HBO.
🇿🇦 nikhona?
Netflix is getting it now, watch how big their subscriber base is about to grow
this a good idea specially historicaly rich African countries like Ethiopia.
About to sign up for ShowMax!!
So sad we just consume American ideas to show our image . But we create nor invent nothing of ours
I hope the netflix company help the poorest people in africa
U are still using such names poor?near our continent like caucasoids love to use????🤷. Poor Is u
What about the poor people in America you come here with that stereotype I'm in Africa based in South Africa in Durban but I'm not poor empeleni I live better life than you
@@l.bmthethwa1598shut up we are poor
Help your own people in your own country first , Africa is not poor , this need to paint Africa as poor is annoying .You people need to act like Saviors , NETFLIX is not a charity but a Business if there was no money or profits in Africa, we would not be having this conversation , they are coming there to MAKE MONEY AKA investment not handout when Tesla builds a factory in TEXAS is it because Texas is poor or maybe it s that Tesla want to make Money
competition is good it makes companies to take people serious brcause if it does not then we leave the company
Showmax is not over the hole continent. Not one French country. Like me who lives in Togo. Also, if Netflix or any other streaming service wants to survive, then the internet cost's will have to drop drastically. 95% of the internet traffic is on mobile, and trust me... Oppenheimer on an android screen is *****, you know.
Showmax is African, Netflix is American... An African business should be leader inm Africa... Concidering what the US is doing with tik tok, do you think they will ever let an african business become a leader in the US?

WE dont want Netflix in Africa for thé samedi reason that WE dont want Western army in Africa. we will créateur our own streaming plateforme and tel our own story and our own truth the way it have to be told , Périod.
Showmax is overloaded with South African and Nigerian content only like other countries dont exist and showmax doesnt invest in shows that are not in Nideria and Sa only ...
Their South African movies and shows draw from a network that is not innovative enough.
Yes netflix will beat showmax because showmax has failed to involve entire ountries in its platforms
EVERYONE LOVES KDRAMA
Kdramas are shit
Only children/chapri like that
Not really .
What is KDRAMA
you mean Gay drama?
No it sucks
Netflix lost ground in USA 😂😂, now it’s relying on 3rd world talent 😂! I don’t know who’s watching because we in USA ain’t watching no Netflix
I told you that Now see Africa is the Future whether you like it or Not
You skipped the part where Africas film industry is bigger than hollywood. Nigerias nollywood produces more films than hollywood its second onky to bollywood
I just want yo know who were the people who ruled and conquered whole of africa? Waiting for a Black Lesbian Queen victoria

40% below age of 15 and Netflix investment is big news.. actually its bad news
Dave Chappell made 82 million on Netflix plus 20 million on Netflix. 1 actor got 100 million dollar on Netflix. And whole continent gets 175 nation 63 million what a joke
The country South Africa got it, not the whole continent, even though you have a valid point at least get it right...
We don’t want it here ,African start ups will stand ,soon we will kick facebook and others out

Anything related to media it is not in Africa for business yahiya to confuse people with their immorality😅
Gay agenda
Cry about it.
About time international companies American include africa , the should also invest in network so that the can get profit haha
NETFLIX Will wipe out Showmax
In your Dreams!!
Keep dreaming
Africa don't need it
Showmax will lose trust me
If the American giant wants to earn better profit, it should invest in the Nigerian entertainment industry, that's the cash cow for showmax.
As the matter of fact you're the best journalist in the world, you say's things just the way it is. keep it up ❤🤗🫸🫷
First Post couldn't even get an African to report on Africa 😂 shows who they want viewing their content
Let Netflix take over, showmax is not uploading episodes on time and purposely buffering certain parts in episodes.
