  • With striker Nicolas Jackson misfiring, it's been a disastrous start to the season for Chelsea. But a look at the "underlying numbers" shows that this isn't just an average team missing a few chances, but one of the best teams in the Premier League on the cusp of having a great season.

Reece and Nkunku alone are HUGE losses, let alone all the other injuries. As a Chelsea fan, I saw the great form in preseason and I believe in this project when the team is healthy. We just need stability in terms of coaching (don’t fire Poch!) and a healthier XI. The flux of managers, injuries, and new young players coming into the prem/the team will eventually stabilize 🙏🏿

Most of these games where Chelsea lost by a goal or conceded a bad one, the criticism has never been that they were outplayed. It has always been that they failed to score. It's not a problem of Poch but all the three four managers before him. This was a problem for Thomas Tuchel as well but he was lucky to have players like James and Chilwell score. Chelsea have not had a good striker ever since Diego Costa and that is the biggest concern. It is just a matter of putting those goals in and then we would be having a very different conversation. It would be the same pundits who would then opine to say yes Chelsea are building something. Besides the guy has just had 6 games. Half his squad is injured. Give him damn time. Just because Todd went bollocks with money doesn't mean Chelsea has to win the PL in game week 6. Keep calm and trust the process.

Finally! Great breakdown of what many of us Chelsea fans see. I think the media needs a headline, and it isn’t a sexy take to say we’re really good (no offense), we just can’t put the ball in the net. It’s easier and more dramatic to say we’ve spent a billion dollars and are still in 14th place, worse than last season.
But for those of us who haven’t completely blocked last season from our minds, we are light years better now than we were then! We couldn’t break a team down, we were boring and unimaginative in build up, we couldn’t create high percentage chances, we were extremely predictable, our coach(es) somehow managed to constantly change formations yet fail to change the actual weak spots… and we couldn’t put the ball in the net!

My only concern with our team is sterling for me he’s lazy off the ball never see him pressing to win the ball back and he is far to greasy on the ball. Some might say he’s scores most of our goals but that’s because he wants individual glory rather than a team win villa showed that 2 on 1 with the keeper and instead of the side tap around the keeper for Jackson to slide it home he tried do it all alone. Amazing to see football pundits saying "but the underlying numbers" only to turn around and show they also don't really understand them. xG is calculated using models (various ones) that take into consideration how typical players at that level in typical teams would do in those sorts of situations when measured by their stats. So if you have a great midfield but a dud of a forward line, you can end up with lots of xG but fewer goals than expected ... because the assumptions of the model (one being: typical player) aren't being met.
Similarly, a team could be getting excessive xG because their opponents are not .. great. Chelsea have played the likes of Luton, Bournmouth, and Forest ... you should be seeing xG against them, given how their seasons have begun. But that could easily be 'unearned' xG and, going against the run of expectation, may actually be less likely than what the model in question predicts (often because those models don't capture all *that many* variables).
Or the players could not have the skill set to beat the sort of keepers in the league today. Villa have a world class keeper right now (amazingly), and if you have strikers that can do it against the average keeper but struggle against those with better positioning and/or reflexes, xG will once again *lie*. The models (again) don't capture those sorts of nuances.
If anything, given where Chelsea is right now in their development, I'd say the xG models are really not suited to measuring them properly at all. They have a lot of young players without much PL experience who are coming together for the first time as a squad under a new manager. Some of those players are going to be a wash (bringing in that many new recruits is going to expose one to the law of averages there), though some should start to kick on as the season continues and perhaps start showing next season what they are capable of. But the composition of the team right now throws massive doubt on the applicability of *standard models* applied to them.
So, no. It isn't *inevitable* that the results will shift dramatically. I doubt they'll have the same level of dismal results as they are really, really poor right now (don't need xG numbers to see the underperformances), but there's nothing that says they'll end up around the European spots, either. It's going to come down to actual performances. Remember Chelsea in 15/16?

In the month of September, Chelsea earned only a single point out of nine available points and were in eighth place in the Premier League :) We all know how it ended up. This season might not be the same, becoming champions is unlikely, but there's still a chance they will finish quite high in the league.

do you really not understand the reason they're underperforming their XG is not suddenly going to change? Sterling isn't just going to turn in to a deadly finisher all of a sudden. Neither is Jackson. These players will finish the season underperforming XG because they're fundamentally weak finishers.

We’ve also played the worst teams in the league though in term of teams that don’t want the ball and just wanna counterattack so of course our “numbers” look good. Yesterday we beat Brighton and it was an ok performance but they had more of the ball so it kinda makes me feel like we’re only keeping the ball and generating a lot of activity around the opposition’s box because they want us to attack so they can counterattack. Also we had Lukaku, if the problem really is just putting the ball in the net then he’s a better striker than Jackson cause he will score if he gets chances. I don’t know until I see us win back to back games I’m not gonna be optimistic
