Why Pochettino's Chelsea Are WASTING Enzo Fernandez

  • Goals from Conor Gallagher and Enzo Fernandez secured a late win for Chelsea against Crystal Palace this week. But the game was also remarkable for Mauricio Pochettino's side breaking the Premier League record for the number of passes made without having a single shot on goal.
So how does a team find a teammate over 400 times, without creating a single chance in the process? Adam Clery explains that the problem is in their use (or misuse) of Enzo Fernandez.

Poch also doesn't know how to utilize Caicedo, Colwill, Nkunku, Mudryk, Carney, Chilwell, Silva, Disasi, Palmer (False 9), and MAYBE Jackson. He doesn't understand how to play his midfielders efficiently, we have HUGE spaces in midfield, whether we are pressing or on the ball. Watching this team under Poch is infuriating.

Notes to Poch for saving Chelsea:
    1. Don't push Enzo so much forward. Keep in deep so that he can assist in the build-up play with his excellent passing range.
    2. Don't hesitate to give the ball to Caicedo, he's a very press-resistant midfielder, one of the best in the league in doing so.
    3. The entire frontline should press as a collective unit not just only Gallagher, Press collectively not individually.
Edit: everyone saying Caicedo only passes backwards, ofcourse he does. When enzo pushes up the field, caicedo gets outnumbered massively in midfield. So obviously he plays it safe because if he loses the ball, the oppositio will be through on goal as Thiago silva is not fast enough to step in. Also, Its not possible for caicedo to dribble past 4-5 players. But if enzo stays deep, the midfield will be much more balanced and caicedo can combine with enzo to break through the midfield.

Pochetino tried Enzo as n.10 in 5 or 6 games and it didn't work.
Even Palace game when Chelsea switched to 433 in the second half the team started to play.
Both Gallagher and Enzo are CMs(n.8).
The problem with Caicedo is his lack of physical strength and he gets overrunned by more physical players, also very important was the fact that he played alongside Gross who is one of most underrated midfielders at PL.
Solution for Chelsea wasn't Caicedo but someone like Pahlihna or Nordgaard strong physical n.6. Not weak CM turned to be CDM.

Recency bias here is insane. I’ll concede he dropped an abysmal performance against palace. And I’ll further concede his debut against West Ham was really poor. But - however bookended his Chelsea career thus far may be with weakness, id go as far as to say he’s been one of our best players. It blows my mind that so many people can’t seem to watch football with their eyes.
He is and has been great in possession. He might look weak under pressure at times - but that’s because we play a system where he is completely isolated all of the time. There is no footballer dead or alive who could thrive in the current role which caicedo has been thrust into. In the phases of play where he does have Enzo lying deep along side him, and the defensive line actually play decent balls into him, caicedo has looked to be worth every penny. But poch (like he is with almost all of our talent) is pissing that potential up the wall.

I knew Pochettino would not fit Chelsea. But, I didn't think he would be this bad. I did not have any big expectations, and yet he still disappointed me. It's such an unpleasant surprise that Chelsea do not seem to have any system, a clear way of play, cohesion in the team, bright tactical ideas, or leadership. Considering that Chelsea are out of European Competitions and have a lot of time to be on the training pitch, that is really not good. You can have a bad period or a slow start. But to lack the basic characteristics of a team, that doesn't speak good for the manager.

There's no one to pass a progressive short pass to because no one is making those runs for a one-two link up play to Enzo in the middle of the park. As a result all they do is make sideways passes from cb another. There is a high line of attackers just waiting for the ball, but they are not a long ball team. This leads to defensive problems also because of rest defense; defensive positioning while in possession, is not great. All they have are these ball winners Caicedo and Callagher, but they dont contribute much in terms of creating chances or space. Bernardo Silva would help a lot if they could get City to sell him.

This is the main issue at the moment. That first half was all cos of Silva. Not sure why this video is singling out Enzo.
This is all because of the initial slowing down of the game by Silva, which sets precedent for all the other young players. 2nd half comes Poch i assume has said speed it up more, 2-3 touches max. And we look loads better in the 2nd half. And look better when Silva comes off too.

so why evacuate the midfield? Agree caicedo has been weak when pressed but make it easier for him and give him options. He's often our only midfielder, what chance has he got then? The midfield needs help so removing an extra man makes no sense it makes it even weaker. We play like 4 - 1 - 5 its ridiculous like we expect to completely skip the middle, sort the mid out, overreacting to it is better imo. Maybe a forward is isolated but it will create so much space to run into, players moving quick in the final 3rd as opposed to slowing to a halt bc everyones already upfront stagnating

You are wrong on this one. Caceido doesn’t look like a press resistant midfielder this season, which is why Enzo has to drop deep at times to play progressives passes. The problem is like pochettino and many other pundit are saying is that this chelsea team need time. There is a lack of chemistry and that is because these players are all new and barely played with each other. Give this chelsea team another year and they will be cooking as long as they keep Pochettino and not make that many drastic changes to the team. They only need a striker, a center back to replace silva, and an attacker like Nico Williams. Maatsen is doing well at dortmund, so pochettino should keep him and play him lb.

But the problem is that all our players are so LAZY and so STUPID that they want to just stand like statues and pass the ball. Had he run fowards he would have drawn the Palace player towards him, thus creating a great opportunity to pass it foward to Gallagher who was in a great position to receive the ball and push into the box.

Chelsea is a team from the middle ages: slow, lazy, rocky. ENZO is the different one, the "Fuori di Classe", as soon as he receives the ball he throws it, he changes the rhythm, the direction of the play. Throw a surgical pass. Boskov used to say that a 60-meter pass is three 20-meter passes, but with more precision. ENZO doesn't believe that and throws a long pass with surgical precision. Another thing Enzo is a player of 12 to 14 goals per year.

The problem is Chelsea play with a 10 who isn't decisive or brave whatsoever. It's never been that complicated and making a 11-minute video focusing on Enzo is misguided at best.

Gallagher is to blame the midfielders to get overrun, because he is allways in wrong place, ALLWAYS, he is just lost in wrong areacode 99% of time.
In Liverpool game he went hiding and caused Enzo and especially Caicedo to be overrun through the midfield all game long and against palace he was hiding all game, but he just had the goals, whoopdy doo, he still sucks bigtime.
Gallagher is 100% to blame and must be benched so that Palmer who is 1000 times better than Gallagher playing the Gallaghers 10 role.
Because of Gallagher the whole offensive block is miss managed, just because Poch insists to force Gallagher into a position he sucks at and makes the team worse.
I been telling all season Gallagher is just a another squad player and not a starter, but because Poch insist playing him and Sterling aswell Silva Chelsea will be losing majority of games when those three players are in the lineup.
The best games Chelsea has played this season have been without Silva, Sterling and Gallagher starting, but just because the rest is making Chelsea winning games, those three players get first choice even thou evidence of this season shows that Chelsea is 100 times better without them.
I hope Poch gets sacked after the City game, because he will play Gallagher and Sterling, Silva is injured, and those 2 will be enough to cause havoc for Chelsea.
Expect Chelsea to be run over like 5,6,7-0 at Ethihad.
I bet fanboys will protect Gallagher and Sterling just because they are English and blame all the foreighners.
Poch out, Sterling out, Gallagher out, Silva out and rest of the team will gel and fix by themself, before the end of the season.
Maybe they even find some sort of rhytm and go on a winning run....
With Gallagher, Sterling and Silva Chelsea is doomed to lose.

He's right that Enzo should not play too up high. But he did not really do this last game. The main problem was that Palmer was played out of position as a center forward and Jackson and Madueke do not have suficient quality as wingers, especially since they don't make the runs they need to do. In the second half Nkunku came on, Palmer switched to right wing and things started to become better. In the end both of Gallaghers goals were created through Palmers side. He should be the first name on the pitch as right winger.

    • @pierre3920
      @pierre3920 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Btw. Enzo would probably have more impact, if he would switch position with Caicedo. First, he would have a bigger destination area for his long passes since he's a right foot. And second he would be more involved in combinations with Palmer and Gusto who are Chelsea's most creative players beside him atm.

I like your analysis, its mostly accurate compared to many channels I've seen. But you never talk about what Chelsea do good. The past few games chelsea played well. Even in games where they lost or drew, the past ten games are worth analysing. But i guess you have to ride the trend of talking negativily about Chelsea so that you don't compromise viewership on your channel.

  • @MightyHealthy941

I have two problems with this analysis. It completely ignores the fact that Chelsea produced their most complete performance of the season (with Enzo at the heart of it) against Villa using the system he analyses here and blames for Enzo's ineffectual first half performance against Palace.
Second it completely ignores the fact that Chelsea's were much better in the second half and Enzo's influence grew using what has been Poch's go to system this season.
Could it simply be an issue of a young team trying to find each other's frequency and create better understanding of their roles which takes time, and in that time performances may be hit and miss.
This analysis seems to be suggesting that there's a particular system under which Chelsea can press more effectively and Enzo's creativity better utilised.

Diverting fault from enzo, and caicedo now, seems to me as simply being blind to facts. They’re not at fault for coming in to chelsea, but they’re not fulfilling the roles the system needs. Caicedo simply was not the man for the job, he’s better suited in a double pivot, and chelsea are not that.
Enzo on the other hand, holds a lot more responsibility. He was brought for a reason, his playmaking abilities from deeper zones. The system has been shifted to better suit his abilities, and he has even been liberated of some defensive responsibilities by pairing him with players quite capable in pressing. Yet, he remains inconsistent. His limited passing range have only increased some of chelsea’s woes from a time back

  • @kwekuoyirifi6239
    @kwekuoyirifi6239 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Enzo and Caiecedo are not particularly good at pressing and recovering balls as Gallagher is. They may be talented but they aren't mature enough to make intelligent adjustments when things don't go according to the coaches plan. The switch in formation in the second half helped but they have along way to go.

While I slightly agree he does posses qualities to operate in and be functional in deeper role in midfield but in my opinion he needs to be closer to the box, he can score and create chances, link play at the edge of the box. There is a very dangerous box- box player in there. He can replicate what Gundogan has done for city in his later seasons. In the box threat. For Argentina this shines through when given the ability to move around the pitch and link play and run ahead of the ball

I guess this is why Poch will never be a top manager, he can’t adapt. Everyone has their own idea on how the game should be played… ppl throw around stuff like this don’t work anymore and those tactics are dated etc but football tactics can be like fashion… u also need the right players. Ultimately he wants the team to play that way which is fine but he clearly doesn’t have the players at his disposal to play like that…. Instead of adapting he is literally stuck in a rut

I can see why Poch is resistant to play Enzo deeper. Chelsea are leaking a lot of goals and Enzo is a passenger defensively. If Chelsea get broken on, he may as well not be there. Chelsea looked better when Gallagher played DM at the start of the season. I think the players need to take more responsibility, they should be able to work out what isn’t working and change themselves

With all due respect to Caicedo, his press resistance has been very poor for Chelsea this season. He's capable of being the transformative force we need in the middle of the park, but you can feel just how nervous he is every time he gets the ball with pressure coming. I hope he gets back to his best soon, though.

    • @user-is1ce6bi3u
      @user-is1ce6bi3u 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s all confidence.
When Caicedo was at Brighton, they built up with 5-6 players that are very compact so he knew if they lost possession, there is a high probability they will recover the ball.
However, at Chelsea Poch has Caicedo isolated with massive gaps in between the players. Most of the players aren’t physically strong enough to win 1v1 duels and Chelsea build up with 3 players. Silva isn’t that fast anymore so if Caicedo loses that ball, the opposition have a very good chance of scoring. The only way to solve it is to have compact lines and create more options for Caicedo
