Look at that line up of guests and then look at what you get nowadays Just one of those guests if on a late night show nowadays would be celebrated for years years and for good reason!
One of the wildest and funniest Tonight shows ever. There are several shorter clips of it posted, but I'm glad this long version is available so we can see more of the brilliant conversation and ad libs.
Pure and Simple...This was a magical time when entertainment was both funny and clean. "Not one Japanese aircraft made it past Tulsa". If I could go back in time I would go to every show Johnny and Dean ever performed. George Gobel...."without me your show would have been nothing." Bless you all. You are what entertainment was all about.
Digging around for trivia on these great comedians, I found that George Gobel had used that line some years before on another show. His talent shows in that he knew exactly when to use it. It still slays me as much as it did the first time I saw it. When Johnny retired, he said that most of the old shows were lost forever. One can imagine what those kinescopes and tapes held in the world of late night entertainment.
George Gobel would have been the perfect person to be stationed with during a world war. You remember the war? It was in all the papers. "Not one Japanese aircraft got past Tulsa" put a smile on every veterans face.
Steven Conroy ... Was so he was keeping Tulsa safe otherwise I might not of been born. My mom and dad was both in Tulsa at that time. Thank you George... Lol
Yeah it was an easier time back then. We didn't have all the political correct b.s. we have today. "'I'll tell you one thing, I have never been known to touch a drop during a solar eclipse." R.I.P. George
A few interesting things about this. Bob Hope was a "surprise guest" and wasn't billed even though the show knew he was going to do a walk on. Dean was a genuine surprise and decided to walk on when he heard that Bob was there. According to Ed McMahon, they wanted to bump George because they were worried that he would kill the momentum. But Johnny insisted on keeping him. It shows you how great Carson's instincts were.
So glad these Carson Shows have been preserved, you sure can't find any late night shows to equal these. No politically correct people complaining. This was COMEDY AT ITS BEST.
@Stranded NYer The shows today are nothing but "groupthink echo chambers" many comedians today have spoken out about how they cannot make a joke against protected political groups. Yes, there were some cultural issues in the past and always were. None of that was as bad as we have it now, PC and groupthink have run amok, only one point of view is ever allowed and ALL entertainment now is nothing more than an indoctrination on what you are allowed to think. Can not escape politics anymore. I watched those shows as I grew up and there was WAY less politics than anything you see today.
“Debuted on the west coast, and made its way east”. FALSE INFO ABOUT TURN ON. Shows air on the EAST coast first. Also ABC did not cancel the show when it was airing. It was canceled 5 days later.
I still cannot believe you said the show premiered on the west coast. You don’t know basic geography!!! (Hint: The east coast is 3 hours ahead of the west.). That’s where new episodes premier first

Johnny Carson was once asked what was his favorite episode of his show out of 30 years and he named this one. Unfortunately, most of his earlier shows were destroyed to make room in the NBC archives, but this one survived because they transferred it over to film to send it over to Vietnam to entertain our soldiers.
man there will never be a guy as wholesome as dean martin. We love him cause we all see someone we know in him, and know he's one of the few real people.
I love Dean Martin, but wholesome? No not even close. His Vegas act was quite 'Adult' humor. So were the roasts! For a glimpse of the real Dino, read his daughter Deana's book. It gave me an understanding of the very complex man he was! I am a total fan! Not so much for Frank.
I’m too young to have seen George Gobel, but it’s impressive how good he was. Straight out of the gate he threw out some zinger jokes to level the playing field in the company of Dean and Bob. Watching the timing of all the them play off of each other is amazing.
No politics, no profanity, no egos, no grandstanding. Just good, clean fun with Johnny Carson, the undisputed king of late night talk. I wouldn't be born for another three years but I watch these old shows on TH-cam. Much better than today's useless fare.
1969... Dean is right in the middle of his 10 yr run of his top rated Dean Martin Variety show (I remember airing Thursday nights on NBC). He was at the height of his popularity - probably the hottest celebrity at the time.
They're not trying to promote their new show, or movie or CD like on late night shows nowadays, but just talking and joking, smoking and having a good time. Great episode.
One of the most remarkable talk shows ever. I saw it live. In addition to Wagner, Wayne, Gobel, Martin, Hope and Carne, Buddy RIch and Louis Belson started it off with a drum duel. You will never see anything like this again.
I watch this episode several times a year. It just does not get any better than this. Today's late night comics are mere shadows compared to the great Johnny Carson.
I know that when one grows older there is a tendency to romanticize the past; however, in this particular case I believe that I am correct. After all, this show was targeted to my parent's generation and not to mine. The level of comedy and the ability of Carson, on the fly, to respond to the moment is almost unequaled today. There was no political correctness yet nothing really untoward was said. It's a bygone era. That's very sad yet we do have these videos. Thank God for that.
I’m almost 50 and actually missed the classic Carson years the first time around. I first got into late night when Carson was approaching his twilight years and Letterman was coming onto the scene. I always loved Johnny and knew he was a legend even when I was a kid. I loved Dave Letterman, too. But Letterman was different in so many ways and you really sensed the generational contrasts between the two. It almost felt like a father being followed by his unruly son! With the passage of time and Johnny’s own passing, I think I love and appreciate Carson even more. His timing, always impeccable! No one has ever been able to come close to Johnny’s cool professionalism. And he knew how to handle a wild and wooly situation, like the one we see in this classic clip! As for the clip, I love it for its unbridled political incorrectness. Just a bunch of cool guys (and gals) having fun together. As for today’s hosts, they truly do pale in comparison. They lack that razor sharp timing. They don’t have comedy in their bones the way Carson did. Kimmel has gotten too political (along with everyone else in the world it seems) and Fallon just seems like a hyped up kid who I can only take in small doses! Sounds like I’m getting old, but I like to think I’m getting wiser and more discerning.
Johnny Carson was the KING of late night talk. And I remember watching this particular show. It was probably one of the best shows Johnny did. I was born in 1958, and I was about 8 years old. My dad worked at International Paper Co. in Mobile, Al. My mom let me stay up one Friday night so I could meet my dad. He was on the 3 to 11 shift that week, so he would get home about 11:30 or a little after. My grandfather had Johnny Carson on the TV, and I sat with him and watched it waiting on my dad. And for some reason, I got so interested in Johnny's show and his guest that I got hooked on watching him every night at 10 pm. Mom and dad said I could stay up as long as my school grades stayed good. So I watched Johnny Carson from that night until his very last show. Late night talk now is crap compared to the Jonny Carson show. Him and all the great stars in those days are surely missed. Oh, and the smoking? Thoes days most everyone smoked. That was when you could smoke anywhere. In department and grocery stores, on airplanes and even in hospitals.
Johnny almost always had the "pair of brown shoes" line on his anniversary shows but it really didn't capture the rare, deadpan humor of George's complete set on this show. Delayed broadcasts on a TV he built himself, the dog with no teeth who bit off a little more than he could chew, you remember the war it was in all the papers and not one Japanese aircraft got past Tulsa are a collection of one liners not often equaled. What a group! Judy Carne, who's reaction to a sip of Dean's drink was hilarious, Bob Hope, Dean Martin, George Gobel, Carol Wayne and Bob Wagner is a "Dean Martin Roast" in itself. What an amazing, funny and diverse collection of talent. I really miss these shows.
Secretariat was my idol, the best performer ever, I know he was a horse but you could almost see him smile for the cameras, the triple crown was for him like a walk in the park, I before it's my time to go I want to go to Kentucky to pay my respects where he's buried, his records still stand.

@Aslan T Vorlon ~ Glad I could answer your question. Carne was a regular, then semi-regular on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In hour, from '68 to '70, but the show ran from '68 to '73. You may already know that. She appeared in numerous TV shows between '62 and '74, and a handful of films as well.
Got to give credit to Dean Martin, he was totally comfortable living in his own skin, he made no excuses, he was very comfortable being who he was, had no worries what others thought, very admirable !!!!!
This has to be the funniest 'Tonight Show' that aired during Carson's reign as host; especially Dean Martin tapping cigarette ashes into George Goble's drink along with his comment that the blonde actress voice sounded like a cartoon.
But Johnny knew it was TV gold and was happy to let it go. And, of course, Dean wasn't really drunk and he could rely on him to not take the show over the edge. They were all professionals.

His 20th or 25th anniversary show with everyone in tuxes and folks like Jack Benny was another great one. But most of his shows were good. He could pull any odd situation out of the dumpster and make it funny. And I loved the bird imitators and hog callers and cowboy poets and his being a talented amateur astronomer and magician, he had Carl Sagan and people from The Magic Castle on regularly. And sometimes he had a truly revelatory interview, like when he asked Burt Reynolds at the height of his fame if he were stuck on a deserted island at the end of the world with whom would he choose to be stuck there. Dean‘s attitude was “let’s get this done in one take so I can go play golf”.
That is the Steubenville Swagger

If I could go back in time I would go to every show Johnny and Dean ever performed. George Gobel...."without me your show would have been nothing." Bless you all. You are what entertainment was all about.
My favorite line EVER........”ever feel like the world is a tuxedo and you’re a pair of brown shoes”?!

Watch the set up. George has patience .. he knew he had a winner.. and made sure it had full impact
Every damn day....😂
karen sheline My favorite line is “hey doc how is your Severinsen?”
Glad I was watching that night. Something to be said for catching it the first time. Wouldn't have imagined then that we'd be watching it in 2022.
Probably the funniest 25 minutes of TV comedy, anywhere.
I never get tired of this. I love it.

George Gobel would have been the perfect person to be stationed with during a world war. You remember the war? It was in all the papers. "Not one Japanese aircraft got past Tulsa" put a smile on every veterans face.

Funniest line with all the heavyweights! Classic!
That continues to crack me up regardless of the fact I've heard it hundreds of times!
Real men being real funny. You could not find 4 guys in Hollywood these days to add lib like this.....Classic!
No Doubt about it
Ain't that the truth
Everyone there was a seasoned entertainer and secure in themself. Plus they had all known each other for years.
So glad these Carson Shows have been preserved, you sure can't find any late night shows to equal these. No politically correct people complaining. This was COMEDY AT ITS BEST.
Yes, and no politics or bad news in general! Just talking and cracking jokes! Beautiful!
Sooo since you cannot get that simple history about 1 show correct, your history about other shows is probably incorrect too
.

This is my all time favorite of the tonight show. Any time Dean was on was a treat.
Carson said MANY time that Goebel's joke about the tuxedo and brown shoes was the funniest joke ever.
I like the one about not one enemy plane got past Tulsa..

For a glimpse of the real Dino, read his daughter Deana's book. It gave me an understanding of the very complex man he was!

I totally agree. This is one of the greatest clips of all time.
100%
We would never see anything like this today. That was excellent. George goebel was hilarious and of course Dean Martin was out of this world
Some of Graham Norton's episodes are pretty funny with multiple guests
This is more funny than ANYTHING on television these days, FAR, FAR better than any of the newer TV hosts and guests.

The Tonight Show's finest hour!
