Not a problem. Ballistol is non-toxic. Besides, I've washed my hands in gasoline, paint thinner and everything else over the years. I don't recommend it, but my generation just lives differently. :-)

@hickok45 I was wondering if you could do a separate cleaning video, more geared towards long term storage of a handgun? Would you use different solvent, or add much more?

Tt Ss Hey woah woah, lol. Why so harsh?! It's not that we need HD, but I mean, this video is a couple of years old, who knows, he might of changed up his system, found some products that work better, and so on. We were just saying that this video was put together really great, and that with the tech we have now, it'd be cool to have this video like "remastered" if you will. Just like every has an update on their EDC, or systems they have in their cars or homes, things change. That's all we were wondering. I just don't understand why you just. I just don't understand why you categorized this generation as needs, or because we don't have the "listening skills required" whatever that means, bud, I'm pretty sure I hold the same listening skills as you, maybe more advanced, or they still need work, but regardless, I understood him just fine... anywho, relax, and go have a snickers. We're all here just to enjoy awesome content, let's do that.

Hello Hickok45, since rejoining the 'gun culture' after many years of absence I've found your videos to be invaluable to me in my quest for recalling the basics of firearm maintenance, cleaning and of course safety, taught to me years ago by my Father, who I lost at age 18. Like you, he had a very easy, steady and non-pedantic way about him...somehow I just knew that He knew what He was talking about...and that's a mouthful from a know-it-all 13 yr. old. I'm 60 now, finally married (12 yrs.) and a homeowner. All I seek from gun ownership is an added degree of safety and security for what my Wife and I have created. I'm a hound for info and have found the likes of Yourself, Massad Ayoob, Chuck Hawks, Jerry Miculek, and a few others to be very beneficial. Anyway, I seem to have rambled on there for a bit, so to the point. In your cleaning video for Glock at roughly 7:25 you are brushing the slide to remove powder from it however it is pointed up...everything else I've read suggests that it be pointed down especially regarding the firing pin/striker area so as not allow any possible debris in...? Please understand, this is an observation, not a criticism from a Newbie trying to learn again what he forgot years ago...I have nothing but respect for you Sir. I appreciate how many requests you must receive daily desiring response and of course I would as well, but failing that, perhaps in your next video you could expand on my question? Thank you Sir for all you have shared with us...and also, thank you to the screener who reads this. Be Safe.

If you haven't had any issues no need to change it now! I believe a machine needs to be well lubricated. And the self defense class guys say they see a lot of under lubricated guns at their courses, especially with the guys have failures. With that being said a Glock really doesn't need much.

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  12 ปีที่แล้ว +25

The main thing is, you don't want oil in the firing pin channel, inside the slide where it will attract dirt and gum up the free movement of the striker, or even the firing pin block, I suppose. That said, a crazy Glock might just operate quite well even with the channel gummed up considerably. For a carry or defensive gun, you just wouldn't want to take the chance.

Just had to tell you how much you have helped me out on choosing my guns , cleaning and striping them and shooting them! You have been a huge influence on my hobbie and my way of life considering I carry a Glock 27 , like my MasterCard. I bought a ruger sr9c and had nothing but problems with it , sent it to ruger , got it back and they didn't fix the problem so I looked up your videos on concealed guns and after watching you shoot the 27 I was already hooked on Glocks ! I left right after I watched the video and drove straight to gander mountain and traded it in for a g27 and I tell you it was the best thing I've ever dun with something to do with guns. I've shot over 4,000 rounds through it with not even one malfunction not one ! Which takes me to my next problem gun . I wanted a 45. And I did watch the video you did on the xds and it did look and feel like a great gun even though I went there for a sf21 it caught my eye . Well it was another mistake not from your review it was my luck and just like the ruger it had problems from the get go , light primer strikes , double feeds and the slide wouldn't go back in place so after being so disappointed in the craze for xd's being the next big thing! I sent it to Springfield , got it back they said they fix it and wouldn't ya know 2 Bullitts out of the gun and light primer strike cuz the slide still wouldn't go back in place so.....what do I do I traded that in for my g21sf and like my 27 after around 1,000 rounds in it not one hickup ! Super long story short your expertise on guns has been so helpful and I can't thank you enough! Your videos are great and I can't wait to see more ! And once again thank you for making me a very proud Glock owner! I'll probably never buy anything but a Glock!

Very good video. The Glocks definitely don't need a lot of oil. Back in the 90's when I was taught how to clean and lube a Glock (with CLP), we lubed the contact points on the frame just as you did. However, we also used a single drop on the exterior of the barrel and a single drop in both of the channels in the slide.

First of all, thank you for what you do for the shooting fraternity, and for simplifying things for those many citizens recently joining us. Your decades of experience leave no room for doubt about any/all topics you cover.
As the 52 yr old son of a gun smith, firearms are in my DNA. We mostly re-blued and parkerized. Pop from the mid '60's on, my brother and I joining him in the mid '70's until the Clinton admin pulled the rug out from under all those without a store front. Pop passed a few years ago as not doing what we love tends to put us in an early grave. I went from re-finishing firearms to bluing high quality swords. (at night,, blued swords are invisible) No, I'd never ''bring a knife to a gun fight''. However, I'd gladly bring a sword to a knife fight.
I've been telling people for decades to use denatured alcohol for cold degreasing and to never over oil. ( ENOUGH with the WD-40 people!) Having said this, and as a first time Glock owner,,(G-27 Gen 4) a few questions if I may.
    1) What is your reason for not oiling the firing pin and/or extractor assembly. (heat/pressure from round discharge?) and after how many rounds should slide be disassembled & cleaned, but NOT oiled? (using only jacketed ammo)
    2) After brush cleaning, can compressed air (with in-line water filter) be used to clear any remaining debris from pistol frame and/or slide?
And finally,#3) Did you like the Glocks when they first started gaining market share in the mid-late '80's? Or did they need to grow on you for a while.
Pop ''hated'' them at first because of the polymer frame, we couldn't make money on them. Eventually the testimony from dozens of officers we've done work for over the years forced him to admit that, because of the reduction in injuries due to less weight, and their round capacity, Glocks were a badly needed upgrade for our brothers and sisters in law enforcement.
My father tried to warn citizens for decades about the direction we were headed on this issue, the mis/dis-information out there seems at times insurmountable. As you can imagine most everyone, even family,, laughed at him for his views. During his funeral, and the weeks after his passing countless people contacted me saying ''You know, Mitch was right. Almost everything he said has come true, especially during this present admin. It's as if he could see the future.''
I told them all the same thing, '' Yes, time has shown him to have been correct about most things. And I can't help but notice that,,, none of you are laughing anymore. Welcome to the party. Now, what are you going to do about it?''
Most understood why I said this. A few got mad. Me, I can care less either way. I'm not nearly as polite as my father was. I stopped pulling my punches in political discourse long ago.
I am my fathers son. The only difference is,, I'd much rather be free than polite.
Anyway, sorry so long,, thanks for everything.

Another easy way to disassemble any Glock is after clearing for safety, pull the trigger to release the striker, then just put the muzzle of the pistol on the table and push until it stops, then pull down on the takedown latch with your free hand then lift the pistol from the table while holding the takedown latch and the slide should fall free from the frame. Hope this helps someone. Love your videos.

Thank you so much for this simple video. I’ve already ordered some Ballistol, and I will go by Walmart for the other materials. I’ll never have to pay $20-50 for a clean Glock (or any of my other firearms) again!
My question is how often? I’ve been doing every 200 - 300 rounds or so. It stays clean and is only shot indoor ranges and it’s a Glock. It’ll probably last forever.

I can tell you my experience! clean your gun whenever you fire some rounds, even 5 or 10 rounds. and don't delay it or the carbon particles harden! and when you fire 50 or 100 rounds, then, you gotta clean it completely, by taking it down(field stripping)! and you can clean your mags tooafter like 500 or 1000 rounds! hope that answers your question!
