I’m embarrassed to say I never knew how to break down and clean this part. I’ve been carrying a Glocks for 16 years. Even in my CCW class years ago during maintenance they never mentioned it. Well they are all clean now. Thank you Hikock45!!!
I'm the 2nd owner of my Glock 21C and after watching this i disassembled my slide and was absolutely amazing at the crap that had built up in there. I'm very glad I have it all cleaned up now.
Hickok45: Thank you for both of the Glock cleaning videos.I recently purchased a 1st gen Glock 19 from a local gunsmith. I made the error of drenching the whole weapon with RemOil. The poor thing's trigger just wouldn't reset. 10 of 15 magazine loads had at least one failure. The gunsmith cleaned/removed all the harm (oil) I inflicted and now she's works flawlessly. He's a great guy too. I've watched/enjoyed many of your videos and wish I would have watched these 2 before doing what I did.
I put a minute amount on the rails and barrel. Occasionally, I go by what the experts say and put a very small amount there at the trigger sear, but not often. What works for me, though, might not work for everybody. All my guns are Ballistol guns, and it tends to almost "treat" the metal to where it needs less lubing.
I tihnk it would be really neat if you did an updated or new video on cleaning a glock 19 or any glock that way we would see it better with better quality video and just to see if and how youve changed or not changed your cleaning over the last 6 years. I just picked up my 1st 19 and love it so much!!
I also would like to see an updated video on cleaning, but with a dirty gun. I clean my gun after pretty much every practice (about 20 rounds) and I want to compare how much leading I get to Hickok's. I use his cleaning techniques but I get a lot of carbon on the slide channels. Any help Hickok?
you clean it after 20 rounds? as in after 20 rounds fired? a little piece of advice, don't waste that much time keeping it clean. let it go 500 or so between cleanings, it won't hurt it.
We have a couple of shops in the Nashville area that carry it, but a lot of gun shops don't. I'd just go to the Ballistoldotcom site and order some. You can also read about it there and find out whether it's for you or not. I love it, but it's different from other lubes and cleaners. I DON'T use it because it's so non-toxic and "environmentally friendly" ; I use it because I like it.
Hello Mr. Hickok45 I wanted to say thank you for teaching the masses on how to breakdown a Glock and clean the slide. I even got my dad to watch this and he even learned a thing or two. Keep up the good work!
Hickok45 you're not alone. I've put my G19 together twice without the recoil spring in a couple of brain-fart moments years ago. You have to remove the back plate and take the striker out to get the slide off. Of course I didn't know how to properly remove the back plate yet so it was a bit nerve racking. It was way before youtube was born. I have a renewed sense of amazement at how simple and brilliant Mr. Glock's design is after fully disassembling the slide.
Thanks Greg, I watched this again & finally got the courage to disassemble & clean the internals of my Glock 26 & 19. I've never been mechanically inclined and just field stripping & cleaning the G19 the first time was intimidating. Thanks for a great channel that entertains AND educates. Continued success sir.
I clean all my glock slides about once a year during the summer. And every time I watch this video for reference. Even though I know how to do it, this is just a good reminder video. See you next year video.
Probably not that often. I might be a bit like changing the oil in a car; one person might shoot 800 rounds a year, but the gun is exposed to dust and lint a great deal, or they might have fired some really dirty or corrosive ammo. Maybe they got some oil in the rear part of the slide. That person would do well to take it apart and clean it, despite the limited firing. Personally, I like to do it a couple times a year unless I think I might have gotten some oil in the striker channel.
Who knew hickocks channel would grow to 2.1 million subscribers. The fact that he's so passionate about what he does is a big part of his success. Keep up the good work !
Just purchased my first Glock,(Gen 4) Went to the range yesterday. That Glock is a smooth shooting gun. I'm more than impressed with it. Anyways. I appreciate your videos. Your experience helps with my trial and error moments. Thanks :)
About 1300 rounds through mine, I got 2-3 "dud" rounds. But I suspected that it wasn't bad ammo, just lighter-than-normal strikes. So I was referred to this video, and sure enough - got oil in the upper and it was "muddy", for lack of a better term. Got it cleaned - thanks to you - and I'm all squared away now. Back to that legendary GLOCK reliability. without a spring, just dry fire, then push the slide forward while holding the take-down latch. I've done it a few times on accident.
Thanks I have owned my glock for about two years and had never done it. With the help of this video I took the slide apart in about a minute and pu tit back together in about thirty seconds. Cleaning it on the other hand took about 15 minutes, it was dirty as can be. Thanks again.
Depends on how many times I've shot it recently and broken it down. I might shoot the gun five times a week, but just a couple of magazines each time. No need to even oil the rails every time, in my opinion. Well, I say opinion, but my 20+ years of shooting Glock have taught me this.
My very first Glock was a used 26 which had the firing pin channel gunked up (yes a technical term) to the point where it would get failures to fire. My buddy is a Glock guy so I learned early how important that channel is to proper functioning. Great and informative video.
i just did this to my g37 and it was pretty clean...still cleaned all the parts, polished them all to a shine...a tiny tiny bit of oil and put it back togather...this is by far the easiest gun to work on, this video helped me to get the guts to try it...its so easy and you explained it very good..love your vids!
Wow! Thanks! Just cleaned my 21SF and SF and it was a breeze thanks to your video! I noticed that if I pulled some cotton off the Q Tip it work great for getting into the smaller hole for the spring. Ordered some Ballistol and look forward to getting it. I think thry ought to give you a lifetime supply of Ballistol for being their #1 salesman! Thanksagain, Hickok 45 and keep the videos coming! You are appreciated!
Your not gonna believe this!!! right after watching this video i (by accident) put the slide on the frame WITHOUT THE BARREL AND GUIDE PIN!!!! thanks for the video! I needed it!
Hickok45: Thanks so much for the videos. I just purchased my first Glock 27 gen 3 I cleaned and oiled everything..LOL if it moved I put rem oil on it, but thanks to your videos I was able to completely disassemble the weapon and take care of it properly, Keep up the great work.
I NEVER TOOK MY SLIDE APART. MY GLOCK QUIT FIRING REGULARLY. I WATCHED THIS VIDEO. I TOOK MY SLIDE APART. IT WAS FILTHY. COULDNT BELIEVE IT. THANKS DUDE.
Great video. I had over 2000 rounds through my G19 Gen 3 and I finally disassembled the slide tonight to perform a thorough cleaning of the slide. It was very dirty and I found bits of brass just like you said. Thanks again for creating this great video and removing my fear of doing a detailed cleaning of the slide!
Another simple but very educational video Hickok45. Thank You. Just bought my first Glock 19 Gen 4. Have shot 500 flawless rounds through her and just love it. Thanks again for the great video.
Great video. Thanks for the demonstration. I took the slide apart and cleaned out all the gunk. Couldn't believe how much was in there. I then promptly did what you were talking about. I put the slide back together and put it on the frame with the barrel and recoil spring sitting right next to me. So I can attest through personal experience that detail stripping it again will allow you to slide it right off.
What you mentioned at the end of the video actually happened to me last week. I oiled the gun a little and wanted to see how well, smooth, the slide would move. So without thinking I put the slide back on without the barrel and spring in place, and sure enough it would not come off. But after about 15 seconds of panicking I quickly realized that if you move the slide forward gently while holding the trigger and depressing it slightly, once it is in the right position the trigger will pull and release the slide. Hope this helps someone in the future.
Great videos, love your channel! At 14:30 you told how you mistakenly put the slide back on your Glock without the barrel or spring & then couldn't remove it. The same thing happened to me while I was distracted while talking on the phone, I inadvertently put the slide back on my G23 w/out the barrel or spring. I couldn't get the slide off to save my life. I went searching for a solution over the next several days & finally found it. Here is the simple fix; using the thumb on your trigger hand or your non-dominant hand, move / push the slide back into battery and then pull the trigger. The slide will come right off the front of the gun. Be careful, if the gun is tilted forward after you pull the trigger it will slide right off before you can grab it & possibly get damaged or damage something else when it hits the deck.
@Hickok45 awesome video! I got my first Glock for Christmas (19). Got some mods done that you suggested and it is an awesome machine,. After shooting, I ended up buying the ranges demo Glock 26 that had a about 4,000 rounds through for an awesome price! true lady made a mistake and wasn't supposed to sell it, but it is amazing shape. I cleaned it up and it was good as new. Then I watched this video. It was so dirty with Soooo much oil in the striker area. Thanks for the video, it really did th
Hey hickok45, just so you know i have a tip for taking off the slide without the barrel and spring, if you just push the slide forward to its normal position and press the trigger it comes right off. Hope that helps you and your viewers, great channel by the way you helped me out a lot with choosing which kinda of glock to get and i couldn't be more happier with it.
Howdy from South Texas! On your suggestion I recently got a Glock 26. LOVE IT!!! Thanks for what you do. I got into shooting about a year ago and your videos have been extremely helpful in learning the lingo, different types, and responsibility.
I did my Smith and Wesson Sigma based off of this and did it for the first time after about 3 years and over 4thousand rounds. It was dirty and full of greasy carbon build up and metal burr. Thanks for the video Hickok45. Im sure it will run more reliably now that the firing pin and extractor are clean and clear.
This was a perfect video for a first timer. My Glock 23 Gen 4 only had 100 rds through it. While not dirty yet, there were metal particles around the striker pin and I feel better they have been removed. Also, note the Gen 4 has a plastic sleeve around the striker assembly. Appreciate the helpful video.
I have a Glock 22 Gen 2, law enforcement trade in. I field striped it and cleaned it, took it to the range and it worked flawlessly. The trigger still felt a little gritty and heavy (about 7lb pull). I did a trigger job and brought it down to 4.5 to 5 lbs, but it still felt gritty. Sure enough, it was the slide assembly. When I took it apart, I found that it was totally gunked up in the striker channel and the pin spring. When I cleaned it I even found little pieces of metal. I am assuming it was pieces of brass. Anyway, definitely don't neglect the slide assembly!
I can't tell you how many people I have recommended your video's to. Huge fan and enjoy your work. so many tips and great advice with honest gun reviews. Not to mention one hell of a shot. keep posting and we will keep watching up here in Michigan. thanks again.
Great video, Hickock. I'm new to handguns and to Glock. I have a G26 Gen4 and a G19 Gen4 on the way. I just followed your vid on cleaning the innards and it was a snap and very good to know. Just because a Glock can still "git 'er done" even when dirty, it doesn't mean it should be neglected. This will become part of my regular cleaning. Thanks so much and keep 'em coming.
Hickok45, As always, time well spent. We're all patiently awaiting the frame dis assembly video.. Never a dull moment (like my wife says) watching your vids.. Thanks
Great video, thanks for the learning tool. I've just bought my first Glock (a Gen 4 Glock 19) and I never would have imagined that the striker should go back in dry... I would have oiled the crap out if, haha. Again, thanks for this and all of your other videos!
i was watching this video, again. i did what you were talking about, putting the slide on without the barrel and the spring, prior to you talking about it. i pulled back on the slide, held the trigger down, and pulled on those 2 springs on the sides, and the slide slid right off.
Hickock - I wanted to take a second to thank you for a few of your excellent videos. Your comment about your first Glock17 hit home, as I just got mine :) Fortunately thanks to you I feel confident cleaning it regularly
Hey Hickok45, Thanks a BUNCH for the information! I was really nervous to attempt this, but I just went along for the ride and had it apart, cleaned, and back together in 20 minutes. BOY was it filthy! Thanks again for the great videos and information! You're AWESOME!
Yes, it does. Duh, can you believe I had a can right there within arm's reach and didn't mention it. I guess if you want intelligence, you just have to go somewhere else! :-) Yep, I highly recommend using a can of compressed air. Mattpkp is right; it's great for working on the slide channels especially.
I've put the slide on without the spring...but now I no longer feel all that stupid about it. Great video. My 26 came with an exceptional amount of oil around the striker. Cleaned it as per this video, and it sounds much louder when dry fired. I think it's traveling further/better.
I had a bunch of gunk built up in my firing pin safety. I was apprehensive about doing this, but it was easy and it was even easier to put back together. I blasted everything with Ballistol, wiped it all down, dried it all, and reassembled in about 20 seconds.
Great Video, first time i've ever taken the slide apart and man was it dirty. The user manual doesn't list cleaning for this, so its much appreciated. Little tip, thompson makes a small set of brushes for cleaning the breach and nipple of a muzzleloader, works great for this.
Hickok thanks for the tip on how to release the slide. I was replacing the sights with an XS Big Dot set this past Saturday, and put the slide on without the barrel and mainspring. If not for your video, it would still be sans barrel and spring. Thanks for the help and for all the work you post here on TH-cam. Bruce
Thanks for this video! I disassembled the slide to my Glock 23 to clean it, I had bought it used. The previous owner must have cared for it because the firing pin and extractor channel wasn't that dirty and I had already fired about 100 rounds through it. I won't put oil or lube on the firing pin area of my guns again.
Sir, you are a glock God!! I took my G29 slide apart and, OMG, what I found was disturbing! I'd changed the back plate, but didn't remove anything else from the slide. Thank you so much for posting this video and thank Glock for their awesome firearms that work, amazingly, with what I saw come outta the striker channel in them. Again, keep on keepin on, brother.
This video saved my sanity!! I purchased my first Glock mid July (Gen4 23). My take-up on my trigger seemed pretty coarse almost grinding from day one. 1400 rounds later no change. Turns out there was debris in the pin safety plunger not to mention 1400 rounds worth of junk. I was using clp and letting it get behind the extractor... No now I'm using a detergent type cleaner and keeping it away from the extractor/safety plunger/p
I have never been a glock fan but now that i have been seeing some of your video's. I am having a change of heart about glock's. I have always been a Sig man but now thanking about buying a glock. Now to see how easy they are to clean cool video.
If you put the slide on w/o the barrel and spring in place, I've pushed the slide forward until its almost aligned as if the barrel and spring are in there and then pull the trigger, it then, will go immediately forward just like when breaking it down after pulling lock down and letting it go forward. I hope you can understand that, it will come off easily without taking the back of the slide off. I dont know if anyone else has answered this in the comments. It just has to do with getting the trigger pulled and then it will unlock from the lower. Nothing has to be forced to do this either. A little pressure on the slide pushing it forward, easy-like, then pull trigger and it will spring forward some. Just dont treat it like an 800lb gorilla, and all should work out. I found out the hard way myself and just messed with it easily until it released. I just refused to believe that it wouldnt come apart without the barrel and spring installed. Thanks Hickok, for the video on taking it apart, I didnt know how to do it. Actually, I figured the other part out on the P10C, but it works on the Glock too. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video,I've owned Glocks for a long time. I like to keep them clean, but I have been a litttle afraid take the striker ,etc. out . After watching your video, I feel more comfortable taking it apart. I tend to forget which way the little parts came out, now if and when I forget I can watch your video again. Thanks Again
Got the glock tool for Christmas today. Pulled up this video and went step by step with you for my first time ever taking apart the slide. It was real dirty in there. Thanks Hickok for this video. I'll be waiting for the one on taking apart the frame...but I have to admit, I'm nervous about that. Life is real good. Merry Christmas.
Well done video and I appreciate the tip NEVER to slip the slide on the frame without the barrel and spring in place first! Good tip to save some aggravation. It’s easy to get distracted for a second and skip a step.
thanks for another simplified video.....I shot 100 rounds threw my first gun ever Glock 26 and after watching your video, I pulled the slide off and seen some Heavy powder residue & this is supposed to be a new gun. I am going to strip it down and clean it like you have shown to see how dirty it really is...Thanks
Thank you for taking the time to make these cleaning videos. I don't have many guns, just 19, 23 and AT84s. I enjoy all your videos and have been watching you for a long time. Again, thanks for all you and John do!
I left out the recoil spring once with my G26 but was too embarassed to take to a gunsmith. Just kept playing with it shaking it and trying to take it apart. I think about 2 days later I finally got it apart while holding it upside down. Caught myself the next time as I started to put the slide back on and noticed the barrel and spring still sitting there. Glad you shared your method.
Thank you for your videos, i just went step by step using your video to clean my slide and you made it so easy that i will be cleaning it all the time and wont be reluctant to take it apart . I really like all your videos .
I was always very careful cleaning the slide, afraid I would get dirt and oil in the striker channel, with all that out you can really scrub the slide as long as you dry and get the crud out of the channel.
This video is very simple and informative... that is why it is great! Thanks for sharing your way of doing things. Many people (like me) dont have years of experience with their Glocks like you. Thanks!
I locked my glock 19 up putting a ghost rocket trigger bar in with out filing the extended metal piece for the over travel, hence rendering my trigger immovable. I thought I ruined the gun since I couldn't pull the trigger to take the slide off. LoL I used a tip from this video to get my butt out of that jam.. Thanks Hickok!
I've never cleaned my slide in the years I've had it mostly because I didn't know it came apart! I can't wait to get home and see what treasure lies inside!
Mr Hickok, if you put the slide on without the barrel in it again, manually push the slide forward to how it normally rests fully assembled. You will notice some tension. Once you are holding it in its natural resting position you can pull the trigger and it will release the slide and it'll come right off.
I actually did what you said at the end and forgot to put the spring and the barrel back in when I put it back together and luckily I didn’t have to take it anywhere. I just pulled the two tabs down and released it like I normally would after pulling the trigger and it worked. I may have lucked out on that one.
Pro Tip: With how it is shown to remove the back plate and striker, it will allow you to remove the slide without pulling the trigger (if it's stuck or something). Simply lock the slide back, release the pressure, slide off the backplate, and remove striker. There is now nothing blocking the slide from going forward so you don't need to dry fire. So you technically can remove the slide without dry firing.
Thanks Brother. Very informative. I have got to do that to my 19. Had over a year and a few hundred rounds through it. I love your videos...you do a great job.
I just used this video to reference how to do this and once I figured it out I paused the video. Unfortunately, I did not finish watching all the way and missed the part about the slide and the frame. Then I made that same mistake haha. I was already stressed then I was freaking out :x. But I did force the slide off by pulling the trigger then foreword on the slide. Nice vid Mr. Hickok
Thanks for the help! I have put a few thousand rounds though my glock yet never cleaned those parts. Good thing I finally decided to take the striker out because there was a bunch of crud in there!
Thanks for this great video. I finally did this after watching this and my G19 was super dirty, now it is like new. Significant amount of build up after 15 years of use with no dis-assembly.
Thank you so much for all the great videos! I once installed my 31 barrel onto my 32 just to see if it would work and got the thing stuck. Nearly cost me a trip to the gun shop.
I had a bunch of gunk built up in my firing pin safety. I was apprehensive about doing this, but it was easy and it was even easier to put back together. I blasted everything with Ballistol, wiped it all down and reassembled in about 20 seconds.
@hickok45 Just got my first can of Ballistol for my G20C and my Mosin-Nagant. I've only shot about 80 rounds through my G20 and cleaned it twice since then ( I simply like to take guns apart and clean them, just because) using Hoppe's #9 and their oil. Thought it was clean. When I got the Ballistol 2 days ago, I sprayed the barrel inside and out, let it sit for 20 minutes, wire brushed it inside only 6 swipes, then ran the rag through it. BLACK! It's clean now! Ballistol only from now on!!
I got careless fidgeting with the striker and it flew apart. Handle that sucker with care. Don't be a dummy like me. Got it all back together lesson learned, the hard way. Thanks for the video Hickok45.
@hikok45 you are amazing. you've taught me soo much. i dissasembled my glock including shile for the first time flawless thanks to you. :) you are better than any teacher i have ever had! your awsome
If you assembled the gun with out the barrel and guide rod assemble just apply some forward pressure on the slide and pull the trigger and the slide will come right off the frame. Just a little advise hickok45! Love the channel always look forward to new video from you!
Hey Hickok45! I've watch a lot of your videos and they are great! I took apart the slide in my G23 for the first time, with about 800 rounds through it,and it was easy with the help from you. Thanks!
Another great vid on Glock care. Been nervous bout this job, but went exactly as shown. Found slide very dirty n could have caused malfunction n my carry gun. Thanks Hickok45!
I’m embarrassed to say I never knew how to break down and clean this part. I’ve been carrying a Glocks for 16 years. Even in my CCW class years ago during maintenance they never mentioned it. Well they are all clean now. Thank you Hikock45!!!

Any Gunsmith or Armorer worth anything knows that cleaning a Glock in this manner is on point Hickock👍🏻. Thanks for keeping it creditable.

Just keep an eye on it; I don't get that much crud in the frame. I wipe off the carbon deposits, but I don't break it down very often at all.

@streamfisher1 , Yep, I don't change anything out. All I do is put the Talon Grips on them and load them up.
Wow! Thanks! Just cleaned my 21SF and SF and it was a breeze thanks to your video! I noticed that if I pulled some cotton off the Q Tip it work great for getting into the smaller hole for the spring. Ordered some Ballistol and look forward to getting it.

Thanks for the easy to understand video. I disassembled my G23 slide today and the striker pin channel was full of oil and carbon mess.
Hope that helps you and your viewers, great channel by the way you helped me out a lot with choosing which kinda of glock to get and i couldn't be more happier with it.
the two loudest sounds you will ever hear are a "click" when you are expecting a "bang", and a "bang" when you are expecting a "click"
Thanks so much and keep 'em coming.
about 800 rounds thru my Glock 19, so i cued up this video and did a step by step slide cleaning, thanks for making it so easy
Hickok45,
As always, time well spent.
Yep, I highly recommend using a can of compressed air. Mattpkp is right; it's great for working on the slide channels especially.
Thank You Hickok!!! I just bought a Glock 17 and cleaned the slide right along with you in the video. Thank You Sir!!
I've used Glocks for years and never knew I needed to clean this. This should be very useful.
Thanks again.
i just wanted to say not only did your video show me how to take my glock apart. but you did a great job instructing
Good video on teaching a person on how to disciple the upper of a glock
Yet another great video. Yours are some of the most informative on TH-cam. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge and opinions with us.
@dezertassassin , No, just the Ballistol.
I would really like to thank you and John for all you're time putting these videos out. I have learned so much from you two..Thank You
This video is very simple and informative... that is why it is great!
@Zoraster4683 , I use alcohol and a dry tooth brush on those things.
Hickok
Thank you!!! My G27 is now SPOTLESS!!! You Sir are a helpful blessing!!!
This was an easy to understand video without a lot of jargon and technical information.
Thanks for the help! I have put a few thousand rounds though my glock yet never cleaned those parts. Good thing I finally decided to take the striker out because there was a bunch of crud in there!
I like how smooth and easy that slide is. Another great video.
Thanks for this great video. I finally did this after watching this and my G19 was super dirty, now it is like new. Significant amount of build up after 15 years of use with no dis-assembly.
Every time i watch this vid, i pick up a lil bit more, very educational, thanks Hickok45
when i grow up, i wanna have as clean a Glock as you :)
Watching these videos I have learned Hickok45 doesn't like oil LOL!!! Seriously these videos are amazing thank you!!!
I never thought of Q-tips. Thanks so much, I've now got my slide (which I oiled in error when I first got the gun) completely clean and dry.
8 years later and I’ve done the same thing I always thought the little hole under the fp channel was to spray ballistol into
Thanks for taking time to produce this video, you took the guess work out of cleaning my slide, great job.
Thank you so much for all the great videos! I once installed my 31 barrel onto my 32 just to see if it would work and got the thing stuck. Nearly cost me a trip to the gun shop.
Your videos are great! Wouldn't trust anyone's else's info about anything Glock or gun related.
I am a new Glock .22 user & I want to tHank u Hick. THis is a real Help...Cleaning & disassembling tHe slide.
@borisnestoiter , Your new striker spring is 1/4" longer? I've never replaced one, but I've assumed Lone Wolf would send anybody one. Maybe not.
