ఈ నాటక ప్రదర్శనను చూస్తుంటే, ఇందులో హరిశ్చంద్రుని దుస్థితికి హృదయం ద్రవించి పోతుంది. బలవంతుడొకడు ఏనుగు పైకి ఎక్కి ఒక రత్నం/రాయిని ఎంత ఎత్తుకు విసరగలడో అంత ధన రాశిని హరిశ్చంద్ర చక్రవర్తి విశ్వామిత్ర మహర్షికి ఇయ్యవలసి యున్నది. ఆ ధనమును హరిశ్చంద్రుడి యొద్ధ నుండి రాబట్టుకొనుటకు విశ్వామిత్ర మహర్షి తన శిష్యుడైన నక్షత్రకుని హరిశ్చంద్రుడి వెంట పంపుతాడు. పాపం ఆ హరిశ్చంద్రుడి యావత్ రాజ్యమునే గాకుండా హరిశ్చంద్రుడి మరియు హరిశ్చంద్రుడి భార్యా పుత్రుల ఒడలి మది ఆభరణములను విశ్వామిత్రుడు తీసుకొని పోనివ్వడు. ఒక్క వారి దేహముల పైని వస్త్రాలను తప్ప. ఇంకా నయం. వాటిని కూడా విడిచి పొమ్మని అనలేదు. అటువంటి హరిశ్చంద్రుడు మునికి ఇయ్యవలసిన ధనము కొరకు వారణాసిలో కాల కౌశికుడు అనే బ్రాహ్మణునికి తన భార్యా పుత్రులను అమ్మితే, వచ్చిన ధనమును విశ్వామిత్రుడి ప్రియ శిష్యుడు నక్షత్రకుడు తన ప్రయాణం బత్తెపు ఖర్చుల క్రింద లెక్క చూసుకొని చేజిక్కించుకొంటాడు. ఆ నక్షత్రకుడు హరిశ్చంద్రుడి పని మీద కాశీకి వచ్చినాడ? లేదు. తన గురువు గారి ఆదేశానుసారం కాశీకి వచ్చినాడు. వానికి ప్రయాణపు ఖర్చులు(traveling allowances) కావలసి వస్తే వాడి గురువు విశ్వామిత్రుడి యొద్దకు నుండి వసూల్(collect)చేసుకోవాలి. అంతే గాని, హరిశ్చంద్రుడి యొద్ధ నుండి తీసుకొంటాడా. లంగ తనం గాక పోతే.
