    2018 KLX 250 owner here. Love it. I can’t afford multiple bikes yet and I have friends that do all sorts of riding. This bike is just the right compromise to do it all. Sure it’s not the fastest bike out there (without the 351 big bore) but it will always eventually get there. I’ve got over 7,000 miles on it and it’s been perfectly reliable. No regrets.

      klx250 is a great bike. Im so happy I started on it. I think if I would have never started on the klx250 I would have been to timid and scared to keep on riding. if I lived in lower elevations and didnt hit gnarly single track in colorado, the KLX250 would be all that I need. as for me, i never even mountain biked or really done anything with 2 wheels. I just decided to pick one up and learn on my own. no friends no nothing. it was tough and this KLX250 was the perfect choice

      klx250 is a great bike! its honestly the best bike you can have for the money and ability. the only thing I would say is, skip the KLX250 if you plan to ride 12k feet elevation. it really kills the power at this elevation. but anything 7k and below, its amazing once you put in proper springs!

    I was really hooked on the KLX300R for a while...Its probably the perfect off-road bike for the way I ride and the terrain conditions I ride in and its the right price. ***BUT*** being strictly a dirt-bike with no lighting and no chance of "dual-sport" ability(without an awful lot of work and $$). This really handicaps the KLX for me. Here in CT we have 2 legal riding areas and the larger of the areas has access roads that technically require a bike to be street legal to use. I also want lighting on my dirt bike for visibility in dark conditions. This leads me back to my main new bike choices the GPX Moto TSE250R or FSE250R. Both are $1000 less than the KLX300R to start with, they come with full lighting and are easily made street legal.(I bevelive GPX even sells a kit to add the turn signals and horn).

    Hey Will , other than gearing what mods have you done to your klx ? Also curious about how heavy you are . I have a carbed klx with some performance mods and I don’t find it severely underpowered. I am only 150lbs with all my gear on though .

    • @RWWRENTAL
      @RWWRENTAL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man, so everything is stock except the gearing. Im thinking about adding a big bore, exhaust kit, 13/52, remove o2, and some other stuff and report then but even adding all of that I still heard it is still pretty gutless. I think the Carb version provides more power. however remember I ride in high elevation so less oxygen = less power and I also weigh 260lbs including gear and stuff. if I was 150lbs then yeah I think this would def carry a bt more better but I am a fatty ;)

    • @ShoestringADV
      @ShoestringADV 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay ya that makes sense. I ride at or around sea level and maybe up to 6000ft . My bike was used and came with 14/46 gearing which is fun off road but I actually do a bit of touring and I found that too short on the hwy so I’m basically back at stock gearing now 14/43 . Now I’m in no way calling the klx a speed machine but I have never had to stop riding a trail due to low power . It has enough for me , it’s just not in the range of a KTM or Husky which I guess if I had infinite cash I would have preferred . Anyway thanks for the reply . I enjoy your content , cheers

  • @mikenelson189
    @mikenelson189 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kind of long winded here but I will chime in. The dirt bike you want is a XR400. Uncorked around 35ish hp and 25 lb ft torque with peak power at 7000 rpm.
    Stock suspension can be made to work awesome on the trails and is fully adjustable front and rear it has one of hell of a grunty motor, more so offroad than the drz400E and pretty much every modern dirt bike available for that matter.
    Wet weight for a stock xr400 is 265 lbs as well and there is a ton of hop ups you can do.
    I have a street legal XR400 that I installed gold valves in the forks and shock added a pumper carb and converted mine to electric start. I have a 75 watt LED headlight I run 16-44 dual sport gearing and I swap out to a 14 when I ride slower technical with steep climbs. With the 14-44 on and a new HD clutch installed I can literally let out the clutch in 2nd gear from a dead stop and it won't stall... it just idles away.
    The xr400 will run out of revs quicker than most but not many dirt bikes have so much available torque so low in the power band.
    My XR400 runs 6300 rpm at 65mph per my trail tech Voyager on the highway with 16-44 I cant imagine 6th gear making all that much of a difference especially when you factor in a smaller displacement bike running at 65 plus.
    With peak power at 7000 rpm and a Max redline of 9000 rpm it has great pull for passing at that speed as well all the way up to 75 mph and a top speed of about 80mph. It is a absolute torque monster down low in the single track here in Colorado no need for 1st gear on the trails at rampart it's 2nd and 3rd gear with 14-44 gearing. 16 is doable but you will need to use 1st gear a lot. Also 15 minute valve adjustments and the motor holds 2.1 quarts of oil which is great.
    Mine as it sits with a 4 gallon tank and a rear rack bark Buster's and a skid plate and the electric start conversation comes in at 305 lbs. And that's lighter than a drzE and only 10 lbs heavier than my 450x I had previously.
    Total cost to do everything plus the bike 3,500 buck nothing beats it imo for the purposes I built it for not even the mighty drz400.

    • @RWWRENTAL
      @RWWRENTAL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vs
      bikez.com/motorcycles/suzuki_dr-z_400_s_2001.php
      You can find both of these bikes cheap but they both have pro's and con's. The DRZ S model is already street legal, a DOHC, liquid cooled and electric start and you can add a kicker to it. You can probably pick one up for around 1 - 2 K and basically already have it bone stock about 70 % of what you did to your XR. Do the suspension and a bigger tank and it's possible to have less or same price as what you did to your XR while having a odo and speedo.
      The XR has gone for many many years unchanged almost like the DRZ ( and the DR of old which isn't the DRZ ) and both are quite reliable. You save alot of headaches with the DRZ already being street legal in the S model trim and having electric start cause kicking an XR if you get stuck on a steep incline isn't ideal or is overheating cause the cooling fins are caked in or your not moving for air to cool it down. But if your battery dies no more button to start, if you happen to damage a radiator or hose and don't have at the least water to add back to it your kinda screwed. Like I said pro's and con's but both are good bike's

      @@IrnMaiden304 with regards to the over heating I think I can put a rest to anyone worried about the air-cooled motor of the xr.
      Last summer I started up my xr and it was idling in the garage yes the garage door was open.
      I got side tracked by my kids. 3 1/2 hours later I walked by the inside garage door and barely heard it running. I forgot about it. I ran out to the garage and the temp was 562 degrees according to my Voyager and still running. I shut it off immediately oil was boiling in the frame.
      The next day I changed the oil and checked the valves they were tight so I adjusted them I checked compression and it was right were it should be no damage done. It doesn't burn oil and I road it all summer long without issue and it runs great. Pretty amazing.
