  • Trevor Hunter and Tyler Belknap tackle the 30th annual Big Bear Trail Riders Big Bear Run Hard Route on a 2024 CRF300L and a KLX300 in near stock trim, comparing the bikes with just Dunlop knobby tires, mousses, and a Ricochet Off-Road Skid Plate equipped on each.

    I have an 06 KTM 450 exc, with a plate.
    Did Big Bear several times.
    Also, many other DS rides...all hard ways.
    My bike is very well maintained.
    Never rebuilt, never had the head off.
    22k miles of often difficult terrain.
    I don't abuse it.
    Always looking to preserve my bike, but get the job done.
    Reliable as a stone axe.
    Like someone said..."90% rider, 10% bike."
    I am by no means, a great rider.
    68 years old.
    But, I like to think I'm a wise rider.
    Take good care of your bike, and it will take care of you.
    Many don't take the care, and just replace.
    Silly!!!

    I owned a CRF250L and went trail riding with guys on 450's a few times. In the open desert they were laughing at me, but when the riding got tighter and more technical, the linear power (or lack of) and lower seat height really paid off. Passing guys on a basic bike that costs $5000 is a lot of fun. Next year Honda Trail 125???

      125cc 2 stroke, slightly modded ( heavier flywheel weight, revalved suspension, smaller countershaft sprocket) will go just about anywhere ( desert dunes excluded). my Rm85 will get through most of mid-high intensity trails (not hard enduro !) where i live . so yeah, its mostly about rider, not bike :) .

    90% rider, 10% bike. People don't wanna hear that and they don't wanna build skills on the bike, they would rather good goodies for the bike and hope it makes up for the 25% skills 😂

    • @phantomshtter
      @phantomshtter 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I couldn't disagree more. I own the CRF 300L and it literally limited my skills DRASTICALLY out the gate. The second I swapped the suspension out, my confidence, the predictability and ABOVE ALL capability of the bike doubled. That's a lot more than 10% the bike. It literally couldn't do basic stuff in stock form.

    • @ripmax333
      @ripmax333 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@phantomshtter I agree, I had a 250L and the suspension on that thing never gave me any confidence, once I spend some good money on suspension it was a different story, the second problem was the weight, 140kg on tight trails will get you tired especially when you make a mistake and you need to lift up that thing. It's not a bad bike but as a first dualsport it was a bit of a handful, unfortunately at that time the yamaha XT250 was never available were I live because I would preferred that one. Yes skills are very important, more than the bike but as most average Joe's you have to start from somewhere.

      Sounds like that crap u hear from brake magazine.. take a multistrada 1250 up the hard route. Goooood luck bro. Sure pros and experts could do it, but the bike makes way more than a 10% difference.

    • @Randy_Cox
      @Randy_Cox 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So funny. Tell me you have 10% skills without telling me you have 10% skills.🤣 It's the bike, it the sun in my eyes, it's the tires, I didn't have my favorite grips. Spend money on gas and ride and ride and ride and build skills.

    I setup my DRz400 for hard use, because its the bike I currently have and I like the damn thing.. Good enduro tires, HD tubes, rim locks, protection parts, springs for my weight, lower gearing, IMS pegs and some weight reduction. The bike will do anything my buds do on their enduros and if I don't have to pick it up much, its somehow less taxing to ride. I will probably get another KTM 2stroke someday because of the lighter weight, but I'm in no hurry.

    Damn, you guys can ride!
    I'd have kept my KLX300 if I could get a larger capacity fuel tank. Acerbis, IMS, I'm not the only one saying this.
    Last year I got a deal on a 23' Husky FE 501 S and I've been kitting it out for a lightweight ADV bike, I'll never ride like you guys, I'm in my late 50's. So I've been thinking about going back to the 300cc level but I'd have to go with the CRF 300L or Rally to get that fuel range in the after market, even though I'd love to have another Kawasaki in my lineup.
    I might be talking myself into keeping the 501 here. 😉

    waay beyond my skill level!
    but was so much fun to watch!
    when I was younger I rode several trails that were a risk [ I was told] to me it was fun.
    but I enjoyed seeing others with skill and I thought "wow"

    I get that a lot on my drz400E. One guy with a WR450 on a ride we went on said I was going to slow everyone down, I just didn't say anything as I know what the bike is capable of. We ended up waiting at the end of the trails for him 😂 he was salty as after that. All that power is fun on the open trails, but in the technical stuff, it can get in the way if you don't know how to use it. Sure, the drz400E isn't hi-tech or a fast bike. The WR450 is the far superior bike in every aspect. But knowing what the bike is capable of and its limits and being able to overcome its weaknesses and utilise it strengths will make you the faster rider at the end of the day. The point is that it definitely comes down to the rider.

    Nice job! There's a possibility I might buy my first ADV, and am thinking the 300 Rally. You show that I will have plenty of time before I am better than the bike. Everybody says to upgrade the suspension-- and that will be a wonderful time getting to that good. Thanks for the encouragement!

    Money does not buy skills... At the end of the day, it is always 75% rider and 25% bike. Well done.
