These bikes run forever. In '79 I bought a '75 XL 125 from a buddy of mine. He had sunk it in a river and had to flush out the engine. I rode it to work every day during the gas shortage and gas lines and was running premix from my Maico in it for a while. It just smoked and smelled like a 2-stroke. I sold the bike to another friend and he let his cousin use it and ride it on the freeway, past redline 50 miles one way to visit a friend. The bike was beat on from day one and never failed, just a great bike.
My dad had us on dirt bikes at a young age, cant thank you enough dad. By the time I was 9, my dad bought me a 1980 XR80, and seeing this video brings back the memories.
Around 1978/9 I had a Yamaha DT125. I used to ride it as my daily commuter and take it off road all the time. Living in Eastbourne, England the highest elevations were on the South Downs. It was a very capable little bike. Next to my house was some open ground with dirt piles for jumping and in winter little streams for some dirty fun. The bike took a lot of abuse and was a tough little machine. Fast forward to 2007, now living in Northern California, I bought a 1978 Honda XL125 and a 1973 CB450. Loved them both. Then, in 2022, aged 61, I suffered a pretty debilitating stroke. So I sold the bike thinking I'd never ride again. But slowly through walking and bicycling, I built my strength, stamina, and balance back up. I decided I wasn't ready to give up just yet. I bought a new Honda Navi 110cc, an automatic cvt transmission that made it easy for riding and rehabilitation. I ride it around the foothill roads where I live but not off road. This video makes me wish I hadn't sold the XL125. Maybe I'll look for another?
Sorry to hear about the stroke, but glad to hear you’re getting strong again! I think you could definetly handle the XL125, the only part that might be an issue is the kick start. I wonder if they ever got electric start 🤔
I worked for the Canadian Coast Guard for 7 years when I was living in Bamfield and I got to drive a tour group up to the top of Mt Ozard to see the radar antenna “globe” that you were headed to. That was almost 30 years ago and I’ve been meaning to ride my dr650 back up there ever since I bought it a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder. What an epic view !!! I live in Port Alberni now so the base of the hill is only an hour and a half away.
Oh that’s awesome! My very first motorcycle trip was to Bamfield, on my kz440! It holds a special place in my heart. I didn’t know there was a radio tower you could ride up though, next time I’ll have to do that!
1972 my folks bought me an SL 125 that I rode EVERYWHERE. Cow trailing, modified it for MX duty and desert riding. It's never say die motor was an awesome little motor. Miss that bike.
Surely this is one of the hidden gems on TH-cam! I'm thrilled to have found it. The content is great to watch, the video quality is spot on, and the narrative is so engaging. Well done, and thank you for many great videos! Wishing you millions of subscribers and looking forward to seeing hundreds of interesting movies from you. Greetings from Poland!
Back in 2003-2004 I used to work at the Victoria landfill as security when it was closed. It was up on a mountain similar to what’s in this video. I had full access to the place, with a security booth plus they provided a pickup truck to drive around the roads of the place. It was a huge place. Driving to the top of the mountain was always an adventure. They also had a MASSIVE recycling bin the size of a swimming pool, strictly for magazines and books. I used to look around in that and read allot, plus take many books to used book stores to sell for extra money😅
Congratulations! I love these old XLs. They are bullet proof and so easy to maintain. I ride my restored XLs (250K0 from 74 and 125K2 from 76) every day. The 125 is very similar to your XL100. It's such an easy ride, almost like a moped.
I’ve had several little XL’s and everything felt like a proper adventure on those little bikes. Good to see one out getting used as it should. I built an XL80S with a modern XR100 motor and suspension and I rode it thousands of miles all over SoCal and NorCal to some really remote places, never let me down.
When these bikes came out, they changed the world. With 55 years of MX,Baja, desert,Dule sport in our mtns here in SO CAL. I still love riding & fishing the Sierra's on my street legal XR 200. The oil cartels were terrified of a little bike with that kind of range. So they killed them. Just like cars before (planed obsolescence). & Nicola Tesla.
I gotta get me a little bike like that, either kept original or as a resto project. There's something about that classic styling, infinitely simple to work on, and grossly cheap to fuel that grabs me. Also that view is gorgeous, great vid.
I’ve never owned anything as cheap to own and operate. We would ride all day long, living on redline for those hills. Then go to the gas station and put $3.50 worth of gas in it hahah.
Awesome adventure!! I have always wanted to ride that Crash site trail and you rode that little bike up there like a champ!!! Brings me back to days when I was riding my 1980 xl100, what a great little bike to blast around the trails. Great job on bringing us along for the ride!
I had an 80's XL100 - an 85 or 86 I believe. I also had an 81 or 82 XL600. That 100 was definitely a gutless little wonder (but fun), while the 600 was an outright tractor. I don't know that I would want to take the 600 out on those trails though, I believe it was around 320 lbs, and would not be fun to deal with if it fell over. Those trails look awesome - I would love to take something like my Kawasaki KDX200 or my Yamaha YZ490 riding those trails! And that TW200 - that's a bike I would love to add to my roster.
My oh my, this is the same model wherein my brother thought how to ride way back 1978 then a year later we switched to the 1979 XL125s. It sure does brings back memories. Thank you so much for sharing this.
great video , thanks for all your effort. this bike is more capable than you think, mount some knobs on it, it will transform your ride. I own a 1971 SL100, pretty close to your bike. I bought it new, commuted on it, raced MX, enduros, toured the rockies 2X, I have a pic of me and the SL in Rodgers pass, 2nd tour was to US rockies, and it will hit 62 mph ish. there is an old racer slogan, "run what you brung" its what I had, $$ was short, Ive had as much fun on that as any bike Ive owned ( currently 15, over 60 total in ride life, been riding since 1968) its about the fun factor, not the ego factor . My SL, Rode it up the sunshine coast and lifted it on the water taxi to Savory island (had to get the captain out of the bar to go). Im going to re-fresh it soon and ride it some more. Im thinking of having a Tour de San Juan next year ( San Juan island maybe) small bores rule ! Get some bloody tires worthy of that bike, keep posting and riding , Cheers
what a wicked little find 🙂 aaaah these little old dual sports make me smile, makes me think of childhood and rippin fields and hills in the 80s, and wow, you canooks really have some amazing terrain - you are blessed to have such options
I can imagine now a guy calling his buddy: Hey, we should go there ! Buddy: We can't. We have big fat GS bikes with half of apartment stored in our 3 cases on them 🤪
Just found your channel, instant sub after finishing the video. Hopefully the fact that it showed up in my suggestions means it'll show up for a lot of other people too.
It's a cool little bike, from someone who spent the last 6 months getting mine working and recovering the title for it to make it street legal again. I have a few grievances with this bike: 1. It is the largest engine to still use points. Even the XL125 was CDI. It is probably the last street legal Honda to use points (I could be wrong), by 1985 when it ended production it was old fashioned. 2. The head can't be removed with the engine in the frame, if it can (like the manual says it should) it requires removing all the mounting bolts and tilting it precariously. It's 2 stroke competition was easier to work on. 3. 1983-1985 models use a magnet spinning around a coil rather than the more common coil around spinning magnet. So accessing the points isn't easy. This arrangement is also unique to this model of these years, so replacements aren't common, and you can't take it off a similar engine. I can't explain how much this change made for no reason has been a massive pain in my ass. 4. The engine is fragile if you run out of oil because the head uses journals rather than bearings. The head lives and dies by those journals, so of course 40 years later everyone has trashed journals and wants an new head that doesn't exist 5. Engine swaps are much more difficult. At least the XL125 has the CG125 engine, but this engine doesn't have so many options. You have very limited options. 6. The bike isn't utilitarian. It has no passenger capacity (see Gurley V. American Honda Motor Co.), but also no luggage rack. Only the early XL100 came with a luggage rack. The best years are after the high pipe was added (1978) but before Honda changed the alternator to that stupid unobtainable design for no reason (~1983)
The points are under that oval cover on the left side of the head. They are driven off the end of the camshaft, and are ridiculously easy to service. Not that you will ever have to.
In June of 1978 I bought that exact bike brand new for $800 out the door! My Dad tried to talk me into the 125 but it was more money and few inches taller I regrated not getting the 125 many years later but I loved that little 100 dearly, until I was 15 and got a like new 79 RM125 and my 100 took the back seat and it sat ..... wish still had it , my neighbor friend then got a the 78 XL75 we should have been on dirt bikes from the beginning
Just did that crash site ride with my dad and uncle this July! Awesome ride. We stopped right where you did and hiked up to the crash best of luck next time!
Another masterpiece RRM, and that scenery on top of the mountain. Oww small bore meet and only a 41 hr drive away :) Probably 75 hr on a small bore bike backroads :)
Awesome content, glad i came accross it! Believe it or not i took a 150cc from Malaysia to the Netherlands all by road! You don't need a big bike to have fun, up til this day still the bike i had the most fun with!
It was a Kawasaki Klx 150, bought it brand new in Malaysia for 1800 euro back in 2015. It took me 11 months +/-, 35000km and 25 countries! The bike handled it like a champ with all luggage on it, had hard panniers from GIVI custom made racks. And eventually a little rack on the front for my tent and some other stuff.
Man what a great video, that was awesome and I loved every minute of that crazy adventure on the little Honda! I would love to ride up there someday, but I still haven't finished riding all the great mountain trails in Colorado yet. I also ride a small bike, a Suzuki DRZ125L. My wife has an '06 Honda CRF100, very similar to your XL100 but newer and lighter. We love the small bikes because they are so easy to ride on the worst trails, and if a fallen tree is in the way, no problem, just pick the bike up and lift it over. Anyway, loved the video and subscribed!
Thanks for watching and all the kind words! I would love to ride Colorado one day! I’ve driven through and explored a bit and it’s an incredibly beautiful state. You must have amazing riding spots!
I have a '75 TC185. Not a speedy boy on the road, but that high-low shifter means it will climb nearly any hill. I've been massing with the carb this last summer, and finally got it to the point it will shoot off like a rocket.
One of my older bikes is a '73 Suzuki TC100. I don't beat on it for obvious reasons but it has a dual range transmission and it would be fun to ride those trails.
Off road and mountains,, no problem with that, I've finally use that when I was 14 selling fish on a makeshift side box with 30 kls both side ang and a foot square cooler box on a carrier 🤣🤣🤣✌️❤️
WOOOW i was greening from ear to ear fore a moment i vas 16 again i did much of the same type of trails my self the light nes of the bike helps a ton better tyres hadde helpt you a lot, i put on a new topp and cam that bike could fly belive me it whent so well that on night on the free way i was thinking to my self such a good light i hadde on my bike and booom lights whent out pich black on free the free way that is not cool came home some odd smell , then i saw that my hige/low beam button was hanging like spageti it hadde melted a ceramic resistens hadde got overloaded so my entire 6 v harnes was ded first time rewiring my hole bike😂, so much fun on small bike, parden my bad english , so nice to see so many freands enjoying motorcycels in butifulle natur just wow all the best fore new season👍
Nice, I used to take a stock 2018 Honda grom offroad, street tires, it went so good so easy to get out of trouble because it’s so light, can just get off the bike and hike it up. only problem is the suspension needed to be a bit longer and firmer. This thing would be amazing.
Love the little bike big adventure idea…I am riding a KTM duke right now…and my girlfriend wants us to get a pair of Honda super cubs…hey I’m in if it gets her riding!…congrats on your launch!👍
I just got a 75 XL100 that needs some work, but it's almost complete for $400. Just want to point out that I'm hearing some loud tapping noise. I would check the timing chain and guides/adjustment and valve lash. Parts for these bikes are slowly fading away as time goes on and it's important to get replacements or get ready for parts sooner rather than later to keep it running. I'm leaning more towards valve lash. If it's too large it will act like a hammer on the valve stems.
funny that this video popped up right as i am possibly looking at buying a 1980 xl100s, it has no spark but i think it would be a cool project and great for riding in the city. insurance is also next to nothing on these little old bikes which is a bonus up north since living in Manitoba i can only ride for 6 months of the year
there was this kid in 1985 always bragging about how his family gave him everything, one day he came on the school bus again bragging about his birthday gift that was waiting (with key in ignition) funny thing is someone stole that kids XR80 and had lotsa fun on that bike, until it was (apparently) sold to a spanish dude , he didnt brag much after that
Awesome video! Looks like a killer little bike, would love to own one but I believe the were never imported to Sweden where I live. To bad Canada is so far off 😉
My first bike was a cb125 that barely ran. The urge to restore one has never been stronger, but the 6v electric system was impossible to find good parts for.
They still make this bike all over the world(I know it’s not the exact model). It’s work horse of the Philippines and others. Believe me they can far beyond what you think it will.
Thanks! It’s from Strathmoto and comes in a few different colours. You can find the red one here: www.strathmoto.com/products/bell-moto-3-classic-gloss-red?_pos=2&_sid=7670d6f67&_ss=r
July 1978, my dad came home with a 1975 XL 75 for my birthday, I drove the wheels right off that little bike, some of the best times I ever had!
Wow that’s awesome, that’s a good dad right there!
I recently bought one for 300 bucks and got it running and riding! Best little bike I've ever owned
What your dad wanted when he was a kid. Got to live through you. Cool dad
I have an XL 75 right now that I am restoring and when it first ran it was the most fun I ever had on any bike lol
@@julianmathur2594 send me some photos when you done, I'd like to find one to refurbish.
As someone "considering" a Honda XR150L (as my FIRST ever bike, primarily for the farm), I found this video particularly useful. Thank you.
That’s awesome, I’m sure it would make a great farm bike

Awesome content, glad i came accross it! Believe it or not i took a 150cc from Malaysia to the Netherlands all by road! You don't need a big bike to have fun, up til this day still the bike i had the most fun with!
That sounds amazing! What bike did you use ?
It was a Kawasaki Klx 150, bought it brand new in Malaysia for 1800 euro back in 2015. It took me 11 months +/-, 35000km and 25 countries! The bike handled it like a champ with all luggage on it, had hard panniers from GIVI custom made racks. And eventually a little rack on the front for my tent and some other stuff.
Loving your vids bud. very high quality and entertaining. Keep up the good work
Regards Steve
You picked the right music.
Sounds straight out of On Any Given Sunday...
I think that's what it was called.
Sure is! Thanks man
One of my older bikes is a '73 Suzuki TC100. I don't beat on it for obvious reasons but it has a dual range transmission and it would be fun to ride those trails.
Good job bro. Stoked to ride with you again soon.
Thanks man! Me too!
Off road and mountains,, no problem with that, I've finally use that when I was 14 selling fish on a makeshift side box with 30 kls both side ang and a foot square cooler box on a carrier 🤣🤣🤣✌️❤️
This video deserves more views.
Appreciate that! And your view!
Great video! Make more!
I’m working on it!! And thank you 😬
WOOOW i was greening from ear to ear fore a moment i vas 16 again i did much of the same type of trails my self the light nes of the bike helps a ton better tyres hadde helpt you a lot, i put on a new topp and cam that bike could fly belive me it whent so well that on night on the free way i was thinking to my self such a good light i hadde on my bike and booom lights whent out pich black on free the free way that is not cool came home some odd smell , then i saw that my hige/low beam button was hanging like spageti it hadde melted a ceramic resistens hadde got overloaded so my entire 6 v harnes was ded first time rewiring my hole bike😂, so much fun on small bike, parden my bad english , so nice to see so many freands enjoying motorcycels in butifulle natur just wow all the best fore new season👍
No lights is very scary! I’ve had that happen before on a road trip. It is not fun!
14:15 So cute your friend being hyped !
I've got a 70 CT 90 I want to get back into shape! I love to see this kind of content
Do it!
Nice, I used to take a stock 2018 Honda grom offroad, street tires, it went so good so easy to get out of trouble because it’s so light, can just get off the bike and hike it up. only problem is the suspension needed to be a bit longer and firmer. This thing would be amazing.
If you like Groms off road you’re gonna like the video I am filming this coming week!
Dude, that was great🤘 Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Bro! Your channel rocks!!
Love the little bike big adventure idea…I am riding a KTM duke right now…and my girlfriend wants us to get a pair of Honda super cubs…hey I’m in if it gets her riding!…congrats on your launch!👍
The Super Cubs are very cool! I am filming with the Trail 125 next week, very excited to see how it goes
I love my 1975 XL100. It feels so light and nimble. You do have to choose your lines in rough terrain.
Excellent video.❤
Thanks for watching!
I used to have an absolute blast on my friends XL 125! They're bulletproof af 😂
Toughest bike I’ve ever ridden! It’s honestly amazing
My first street-legal bike was an '85 XL185s, wish i still had her
the true adventure bike
offroad & great mileage
That bike is crazy good on fuel
Just got me a 1982xr100 n she runs beautiful
I just got a 75 XL100 that needs some work, but it's almost complete for $400.
Just want to point out that I'm hearing some loud tapping noise. I would check the timing chain and guides/adjustment and valve lash. Parts for these bikes are slowly fading away as time goes on and it's important to get replacements or get ready for parts sooner rather than later to keep it running. I'm leaning more towards valve lash. If it's too large it will act like a hammer on the valve stems.
Hey my first love/bike. I got mine new in 1984.
i never seen a vedio like this thank man watching this damn love OLD bikes so much
Thanks for watching! I think in canada we called that bike the nx250, they are pretty rare here
Had the xl 75 as a hand me down bike. First one i rode. Rode it for years in the bush and through the trails
That’s awesome
@@rangeroadmoto also on van island. Enjoy the trails man, cheers
I had one of these when i was 15 it was so much fun
That’s awesome! I love all the old little Hondas. So much fun
funny that this video popped up right as i am possibly looking at buying a 1980 xl100s, it has no spark but i think it would be a cool project and great for riding in the city. insurance is also next to nothing on these little old bikes which is a bonus up north since living in Manitoba i can only ride for 6 months of the year
They are great little bikes, and most of the parts can be found online pretty cheap
This is awesome .
You should take the indicators off when offroad like we used to in the day.
Beautiful!
Why can't they make these again?
there was this kid in 1985 always bragging about how his family gave him everything, one day he came on the school bus again bragging about his birthday gift that was waiting (with key in ignition) funny thing is someone stole that kids XR80 and had lotsa fun on that bike, until it was (apparently) sold to a spanish dude , he didnt brag much after that
Had one like that in the early-mid eighties.
Awesome video! Looks like a killer little bike, would love to own one but I believe the were never imported to Sweden where I live. To bad Canada is so far off 😉
Thank you! I’m sure Sweden has some cool little bikes we never got here in Canada
Nice video, so are you out of Calgary or Edmonton?
My first bike was a cb125 that barely ran. The urge to restore one has never been stronger, but the 6v electric system was impossible to find good parts for.
Have you tried 4into1.com?
They still make this bike all over the world(I know it’s not the exact model). It’s work horse of the Philippines and others. Believe me they can far beyond what you think it will.
That’s awesome! Are you referring to the XR150L?
Whete did you buy that vintage red helmet its nice
Thanks! It’s from Strathmoto and comes in a few different colours. You can find the red one here: www.strathmoto.com/products/bell-moto-3-classic-gloss-red?_pos=2&_sid=7670d6f67&_ss=r
