My late big Sister used to sing "Summertime" to me when I couldn't fall asleep. My Big Sis sounded just like Janis Joplin & looked just like Barbra Streisand (think "Funny Girl").
Maybe she should have traded some of her nail clippings in for a more pleasing voice.. Just saying.. Lots of emotion and loud screaming, not a pleasing voice.. ♠W.G.
I was lucky enough to see her live. She was relatively sober and put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. There will never be another close to her.
I’m glad she put on a show for you. I saw her, she was pissed because the cops wouldn’t let her keep her Southern Comfort on stage. The setlist was pretty short, no encore.
Mr.J.its so awesome that ur helping the younger generation hear for the first time what alot of us have been jamming on for 50 years.Thank You sir!! This song was an excellent choice.Rock on Bruthr!! You r truly a GOOD HUMAN!!!
Love love love Janis 💖 my kids used to complain about me cranking her up (they were born in the early & mid 90s) now they thank me for all the performers I made them listen to during their youth 😂🤩
Janis was such an amazing performer, how tragic that her personal life was full of heartache and self doubt. The movie Little Girl Blue is an enlightening documentary about Janis. She was voted "ugliest man on the campus"...can you imagine what effect that had?😔😔
Damn I just love her. People were cruel to her in school and when she tried to go to college. It breaks my heart and I wish she knew how loved she is! We still listen to you! You’re loved and will always be loved, Janis! I hope the bullies in school think everyday how they hurt her. Words matter! Be kind to people, because people tend to forget the good things people say, and the bad things stick with them. We love you Janis. I hope somehow you know how appreciated you and your music still is! 😢♥️💐
Janis was a phenomenon. Beyond being, undoubtedly, the finest female blues/rock vocalist in modern history. She was an angel who walked the Earth, at a time when we all needed her the most... but, for FAR too brief of a time. Although she left us way too soon, the magic of her music remains... and her love. We love you too, Pearl. Forever & Always. Cheers! 🍻🌹🌎❤🎤🎶🎸🎵✌
I am 69 and have been rocking with Janis Joplin since I was early teens and she will always be my number one female😊😊😊❤❤❤ the only one I think can even come close is the legendary Beth Hart especially when she sings I'd rather go blind😊😊😊 hands down my favorite song by Janis is little girl blues song on the Tom Jones Show and she also sang a duet with Tom Jones called raise your hand which is fire❤❤❤
Summertime is such a classic, and Janis' version is iconic. You could also check out the versions by Billy Stewart (from the 60s; we all heard it on the radio) and Ella Fitzgerald. And Mercedes Benz by Janis!
I started listening to Janis in the late 60s and never looked back! When you talk about passion, it has Janis written all over It! She was the goat of her johnra...
Oh my I remember this and not only is this unforgettable it is also absolutely great ! I was about her age, I was born and living in LA back then. I liked her music but I really didn’t appreciate just how wonderful it really was. Thanks for the reminder and allowing me to enjoy this song again. It’s actually one of my favorites
I highly recommend TURTLE BLUES. Janis bares her soul on this one. The shields we put up to protect ourselves and the attempt to deny love crashes skillfully together in this beautiful blues song.
As Albert King said once at Fillmore West when she was late & he was urged to go on Nobody goes on until the Queen goes on. She was the Queen. This song breaks my heart she was so amazing.
I completely fell in love with Janis the first time I heard her voice. It was my freshman year in college in 1989. I was hooked then. I am still hooked now. ✌️💜✌️
My favorite song of hers but I never heard the live version WOW. Wish someone would remaster the video before it goes bad I would have loved to see her perform this as it was a bit difficult to see but her voice amazing. You are correct seeing her live performances gives me the chills.
The picture that I refer to is Janis Joplin the whole page on a Time Life Book and it shows everything the baby's got and oh I saw that when I was like 11 12 you know starting to puberty deal all my Marcy let me up at I've always always thought yeah I would have spent the night with Janice for sure or two or three or four or ever how many she would have had me but I took what I could have got brother you know what is AJ
I can still remember that picture you know what I'm saying I mean I don't think I don't think I like I say I got ahold of this when I was eleven or twelve and I don't imagine that the images that image just it's going to stay you know what I say hey alright
This lady could sing! Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. "Me & Bobby McGee" is one of my favorites by her but she had a lot of great songs such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Ball & Chain", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "To Love Somebody", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over" & her original song "Mercedes Benz".
Brother, Check out her monterrey pip festival version of "ball and chain". The cameras weren't on the first time so she did it again. That's the one we see. Incredible! 🙏
Monterrey is where Cass Elliot was in the audience. She was wearing sunglasses, shaking her head, & saying "Wow". My all-time favorite Joplin songs are "Turtle Blues" & "Little Girl Blues". From what I understand, Joplin recorded one take of "Turtle Blues" & was supposed to come back the next day to tweak the recording. She never made it back into the studio because she left us, for good. Listen to that recording & tell me it's not one of her best songs ever.
Fun fact from the Guinness Book of World Records: "Summertime" is considered to be the most recorded song, with a staggering 67,591 recorded versions in existence as of 1 June 2017.
Janis was in a class by herself she had it going on everyday of the week got it on vinyl, cassette n CD. Luv me some Janis..Awesome choice Mr.Jamel..Keep on Rocking Bruthr!! We luv it!!! BTW, her version of Me and Bobby McGee is topshelf. If u get a chance check it out.God Bless
What a tragic member of the 27 club. She had such a split personality -- on the one hand, she could absolutely transfix a crowd of tens of thousands with her gigantic stage presence. But off stage she was very soft-spoken and suffered from crippling self-doubt and insecurity.
Nice live version, with extra instrumentation. Janis covered songs recorded by some great Black artists like Etta James, Erma Franklin, and Big Mama Thornton, respectfully making them her own. What a talent!
I grew up listening to my Dad singing this ( & other tunes) in the style of Paul Robeson, Dad's voice was as deep. My parents love of music, the family singing around the piano, played by Mum who was self taught, led to me loving so many types of music, & several versions of this tune. Love Sculpture's version (with Dave Edmunds) is worth a listen too. P.S. Dad loved Ella Fitzgerald's version & so do I.
“Summertime, wooden ships and today” are all in my summer music repertoire. I missed out on the 60s and 70s but that music always take me back to a time I wasn’t around for. That’s what great music does. Transports you.
Agree completely. Studio version gets the hairs on the back of your neck to standup. Nice to include Today by Jefferson Airplane. Seems to be forgotten and I've loved it since 1968 when I wore out Surrealistic Pillow on my turntable.
Someone else suggested, and I fully agree, that you now need to check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of Summertime (the one from 1968) and Billy Stewart's version as well. Very different and totally great.
Cause We've Ended as Lovers by Jeff Beck. It's an instrumental but phenomenal B.b King and Ruth Brown live "Ain't Nobody's Business" Great react 🔥🔥 Janis was one of the best soulful singers. She laid it out man
You’re absolutely right. Janis Joplin tears out your heart. Tammy Wynette could do that too. I’m not sure that ability is still out there. Soul. Soul. Soul.
My man Billy Strings does a fine cover with Marcus King that is worth checking out. You could do a month of just Summertime covers. My fave is probably Billy Stewart, what a trip!
Janis is amazing performer. I love the diversity of interpretation in music with this version, Ella Fitzgerald of course has a definitive rendition of Summertime. I would love you to checkout the lesser known Billy Stewart version it is a totally different interpretation, just amazing with a Latin influence. It also is a black and white live performance in this video. th-cam.com/video/XWxYx9mmr7U/w-d-xo.html
It's her rendition of this that I copied back in the 70s when I was singing in the local bars. I had a Janis type voice so I sang this and others of hers. Thanks for the memories. smh sigh... Now there is a band of kids who has a singer that is unusual like Janis was. LILIAC is to be experienced, not just heard. MeloDia had me hooked 3 years ago and the rest of her siblings.

My late big Sister used to sing "Summertime" to me when I couldn't fall asleep.
My Big Sis sounded just like Janis Joplin & looked just like Barbra Streisand (think "Funny Girl").
Janis had more soul in her nail clippings than most people could muster.
She needs to find a more smooth pleasing voice instead of the rough extra gravely one she uses.. Emotion is not everything.. ♠W.G.
Joss Stone is amazing if you haven’t heard her sing you should check her out.
I agree with you!!
Maybe she should have traded some of her nail clippings in for a more pleasing voice.. Just saying.. Lots of emotion and loud screaming, not a pleasing voice.. ♠W.G.
@@wgdavis5353 sad man
I liked Janis when I was a kid. Now, as an old man (70) I can appreciate her enough to love her music.
A voice like no other. Got to give some love to the band Big Brother and the Holding Co. also. They are phenomenal.
Intro sounds like something out of medieval England!
I watched a documentary of them working on this in the studio and she was absolute in her vision of every aspect of this song.
Fillmore West. I was 19 years old and fell in love with her.
Agree. about Live when it comes to Janis!
She screams what we all feel!
How can you not be blown away by this performance? Just effing awesome!!
Mr.J.its so awesome that ur helping the younger generation hear for the first time what alot of us have been jamming on for 50 years.Thank You sir!! This song was an excellent choice.Rock on Bruthr!! You r truly a GOOD HUMAN!!!
One of my favorite Janis songs. She was so unique & so soulful and passionate. No one else like her.
Chills. This gives me chills, in the best way. Gone, way too soon.
Just fricken awesome, you just don’t get better than her talent
My favorite cover of Summer Time, bar none.
Love love love Janis 💖 my kids used to complain about me cranking her up (they were born in the early & mid 90s) now they thank me for all the performers I made them listen to during their youth 😂🤩
my kids (now grown) stole ALL of my classic rock cd's over the years, they would just disappear. 🤣
Greetings from PATX. Chillingly, hauntingly and timelessly beautiful.
Janis was such an amazing performer, how tragic that her personal life was full of heartache and self doubt. The movie Little Girl Blue is an enlightening documentary about Janis. She was voted "ugliest man on the campus"...can you imagine what effect that had?😔😔
I love Pearl so much. Always have since I saw her at Monterey Pop and subsequently.
Damn I just love her. People were cruel to her in school and when she tried to go to college. It breaks my heart and I wish she knew how loved she is! We still listen to you! You’re loved and will always be loved, Janis! I hope the bullies in school think everyday how they hurt her. Words matter! I love Janis
Great review Jamel! Fell in love with Janis 50 years ago. She’ll cut you open and rip your heart out and pull you into her heights and depths.
Classic! And I got to see her sing this!
Summertime is such a classic, and Janis' version is iconic. You could also check out the versions by Billy Stewart (from the 60s; we all heard it on the radio) and Ella Fitzgerald. And Mercedes Benz by Janis!
Anything by Ella Fitzgerald.
Yes! Just coming to suggest the same thing!
I started listening to Janis in the late 60s and never looked back! When you talk about passion, it has Janis written all over It! She was the goat of her johnra...
Oh my I remember this and not only is this unforgettable it is also absolutely great ! I was about her age, I was born and living in LA back then. So good to see her with a talented band for a change. Great arrangement of this song!
Another reaction channel described her voice perfectly. "She has the most un-perfect, perfect voice" She is in my top 10 favs of all time.
The greatest female rock voice of all time
Janis loved shifting gears on your heart strings.
I highly recommend TURTLE BLUES. Janis bares her soul on this one. The shields we put up to protect ourselves and the attempt to deny love crashes skillfully together in this beautiful blues song.
Janis Joplin had a scream that could shatter glass then put all the pieces back together with a quiver
Not to mention the almost Mongolian throat singing style- as she could sing 2-3 notes at once. I don’t know how she did it.
As Albert King said once at Fillmore West when she was late & he was urged to go on Nobody goes on until the Queen goes on. She was the Queen. This song breaks my heart she was so amazing.
Janis Joplin - you can actually feel her emotions! Such a huge voice from a very petite woman.
☮️💟
I completely fell in love with Janis the first time I heard her voice. It was my freshman year in college in 1989. I was hooked then. I am still hooked now. ✌️💜✌️
I love this song from Janis. One of my favorites.

It’s on YT without the blocking mechanisms.
Play the studio version it’s amazing!!
I was lucky to see Janis 3x ❤️
One of the rare live recordings that gives you chills
This is probably my all time favorite of hets she just blows me away and I FEEL her voice
She gave every note and every syllable an entire life of it's own. I'm privileged to be born on her birthday.❤❤❤
Pearl was incredible! ♥

I always loved her with Big Brother and the Holding Company the best.
Never thought of the commonality of the singers Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker before. Absolutely an excellent insight. Thank you.
Wonderful way you bring the music alive!! Like the DJ’s of days gone by!! Bravo 🙌💜🙌💜🙌💜🙌
If you haven't done it already check out her singing "Little Girl Blue" from the Tom Jones show. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Women singers in her time were in awe when they heard her voice!!👍🏻👍🏻✌✌
I agree with you I love Janice and I love Joe Cocker. Nobody else quite like them.❤️

Janis’ version is the benchmark, The Zombies also did a very worthy take on it.
Never heard this version before. Thanks for the treat Jamel!
Love You!!!!! Thanks so much for this version!!!! You are the best!
If you never heard Janis this would be the first song I would suggest. It's the best of her in my mind!
Фантастическое исполнение!👍😎❤️🔥
What a tragic member of the 27 club. She had such a split personality -- on the one hand, she could absolutely transfix a crowd of tens of thousands with her gigantic stage presence. But off stage she was very soft-spoken and suffered from crippling self-doubt and insecurity.
Just amazing as always!

Straight from the soul

I love the song Summertime and ners is my all time favorite version.
Janis introduced me to soul music!
She was such a beautiful woman and a beautiful soul.
I love this. I prefer the studio version, its in my top 50 songs of all time by any artist. You should also hit up “Today” by the Jefferson Airplane.
“Summertime, wooden ships and today” are all in my summer music repertoire. I missed out on the 60s and 70s but that music always take me back to a time I wasn’t around for. That’s what great music does. Transports you.

I like the album version best, too, but I'll listen to Janis sing anything.
True but this live version is still so powerful. She was a once in a generation artist. Rip
I LOVE YOU JANIS!
You need to check Janis and Pigpen as a duo.
This is my favorite Janis song.
oh the goosebumps are jamming!!
Someone else suggested, and I fully agree, that you now need to check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of Summertime (the one from 1968) and Billy Stewart's version as well. Very different and totally great.

B.b King and Ruth Brown live "Ain't Nobody's Business"
Great react 🔥🔥 Janis was one of the best soulful singers. She laid it out man
Cause we ended as lovers by Jeff Beck is totally amazing, also Goodbye pork pie hat.
I have friends that don’t appreciate her voice. She put her soul into this song! This song, to me, belongs to her!
I've been waiting for this one!
I just did after listening to the duet if Smokey Robinson and Linda Ronsantd ....you read my mind
Janis is one of those rare performers who sounds just as good, if not better, than the studio versions.
Love this song My mom use to sing this song to me when I was little 😢
Jamel theres a version of Work Me Lord from the same show in video which is maybe the greatest performance of all time..u wont be able to sleep after!
Yes ❤
Come on TH-cam let us see the videos..
The Queen of Blues RnR

I love how you try every style of music……. Hey please try sweet cherry wine… by Tommy james
Janis would become the Song !
This song is fantastic.
My favourite version: Billy Stewart - Summertime
You should check out Melissa Etheridge/Joss Stone tribute to Janis (2005)
Check out Little girl blue…it always gets me in the feels too.

Ooh, now would be a good time to recommend Jamel watch the movie AMERICAN POP!, which puts this song to great use.
Wonder where this was recorded. Never heard the little trumpet intro before.
I think this was taped in Sweden
What a freakin time to be alive...
Beautiful 👍✌
