Being a gay teen, and seeing this video on MTV back in '85 was a revelation to me. Words just can't express what this song and video meant to this smalltown boy back then. Representation matters.

Bronski Beat (and other bands like Pet Shop Boys) were proponents of the idea that disco is folk music for gay men. Knowing that gives their music a whole new spin.

Being a gay man that endured the same thing by my so called friends in the 70’s and 80’s. The love that I needed was never found in this small CT town.

Such a good song from such an important band in the UK back in the day. They brought their openness to the mainstream pop scene, telling some really sad stories behind this really uplifting music. Their album The Age Of Consent is still a great listen... some outstanding tracks on it.

The height of the gay panic. The sharing of the apple was shocking as people were terrified of catching AIDS, but it showed you could share food.

Thank you so much for following through on my request! I love this song and I’m so glad you did too. Your reaction and commentary was spot on. This track was / is so important and I agree, very moving. I have another request that is in the same sort of autobiographical vibe. Please check out Simply Red “Holding Back the Years”. It’s another beautiful song that Mick Hucknall wrote when he was just 17. It’s about his life’s struggles and the toll of his mother leaving the family when he was 3. Would enjoy seeing your reaction on this one as well. Thanks again Nick and have a great day!

I noticed the Apple scene right near the end of the video, jimmy takes a bite of an apple then passes it to his mate sitting opposit on the train. Surely a dispelling reference to the very recent Aids outbreak that was hitting the news that year, sparking all sorts of prejudice and miss guided paranoia, one being that Aids could be passed on through saliva. Great reaction love your channal and content.

This was the first MV to tell a story rather than being a band in stage. Groundbreaking also is the lyrics. Jimmy never talked about whether it was autobiographical.
    Glad you liked it.

Loved this song as a kid....never at all picked up what it was about. Watching it now I recall my first trip to London after flying in.....depressing old dirty train trip...past depressing looking houses wandering what I gotten myself into by going there....actually turned out to be amazing.

Glad you reacted to this song. I'm not a gay man but a straight woman none the less this song has great depth to it, its a heartbreaking song. Many many times I've cried listening to this song. You can feel the pain that this young man felt and I have no doubt that Jimmy wrote this because you cant miss just how real what hes singing is to him. You don't have to be gay to have been mistreated rejected and have felt not loved in this life and I don't think that there's a soul who cant feel compassion and empathy for what hes feeling. Not feeling understood not feeling loved feeling like an outsider tell me who hasn't felt these things regardless of the circumstances? As for him getting beat up he must have been terrified people have been killed for being gay, black, ect its one thing not to agree or understand people for who they are but to hurt people because of it is just plain wrong its inhumane its evil. I'm a born again believer and if you believe in Christ you don't hate people you love them even if you don't agree or understand. Hating people and hurting people will never bring them to Christ it only makes them hate God and run from God. Before the Lord called to me my best friend of almost 40 years was gay I loved him like a brother thought of him as such. I had 2 other friends who were both gay even though I didn't understand I still loved them. I didn't stop being there friend because I came to Christ the first one actually didn't want to be friends anymore the other 2 we parted ways because I moved to different states. I still love them I pray for them. All I can say is... if you are gay give those who don't understand you or agree with you a chance because we all need a chance in this life and if there true Christians they will love you no matter what because we are all different in one way or another no 2 of us are exactly alike and that can even be a good thing. Peace.

This was an important song for some people in the LGBT community in the UK. Not my cup of tea musically but Jimmy Somerville's voice is striking. I remember an interview in the UK music press in which Jimmy told how he was caught performing oral sex on a guy in the park and the police officer who took him away asked for an autograph 😄

You didn’t have to be gay to appreciate the song, only a small town boy. A mentor told me this-he also buggered me senseless but taught me a thing or two about life.

Great song first and foremost. Very much of it’s time, but still relevant for today - and I’m not talking about the “woke” generation. There will always be people who hate you if you are “different” or think outside the box regardless of what your sexuality is. It’s what’s in your head that scares people.
In my view, be yourself - it’s better than living a lie, that will kill you.

IMHO the three best styles of music are -
Droning hypnotic SONGS which are psychedelic and mess with your mind
Hi energy, catchy, riffy, punk and rock n roll
80s synth pop with bright, dancey music and serious and emotional lyrics
