Wonderful. Really expressive playing, not easily found nowadays. To everyone commenting on the romantic interpretation, he is using a piano not a harpsichord. Plus pull up any great violinist playing solo Bach, Szeryng, Milstein, Stern, Heifetz, all use vibrato so relax. The man plays great just enjoy it.
Never had listened to this piece of music. I loved it played by you. I loved the 1st movement when it sounds melancolic but way touching. I love it! All the parts were good and... what a hard time the last movement was, uh?! Of course, not for you so it shows how good you are. Congratulazioni!!!
This comment means a lot to me...Not only because Terry was a great bassist and conductor, but an old friend...Tragically, I recently found out in Facebook that he was murdered by a thief who broke into his Florida home...R.I.P. Terry...You are sorely missed...
beautiful rendition. I love your tone. i would love to see more videos of your performances. Your vibrato is exquisite. I like the tempo you chose for the second movement.
I will do. Also you can find me on facebook called grimya music. I should introduce myself. I am a bass player also and primarily jazz but my background is classical also. Watching your video inspired me to go back and re examine the solo repertoire. I love your tone and phrasing.
Nice work Mr. Xucla! I am a double bassist also. I played this at my senior recital in 1997 for my undergraduate degree. I am thinking about getting the entire piece back under my fingers again. Thus, I started researching TH-cam for examples of bassists playing the Eccles. I sure wish I had this resource back in 1997! It would have helped me immensely!! I enjoyed your treatment of each mvmt. I loved your expression at the conclusion of the 4th mvmt! Priceless! Yes, you definitely took the last mvmt Vivace to another level! Btw, love your bass and I thought it interesting, you were playing and holding the bass in almost a baroque style! The sound you get from your instrument is beautiful!
Barry Green Hey Maestro! Fantastic performance! 🎶👍👏💥thankyou for remembering me! Are you still in PR?...[Barry Green's response to me sending him the Eccles for his birthday on FB]...I got lucky and had the privilege of having him and Stuart Sankey in my Casals Festival bass section...they also came to my first bass recital, there, in 1980...so...I responded..."Praise from Caesar!...Thank you...No, Maestro, I returned to NYC to freelance after that...Sometimes I wish I had stayed there...Hope you had a great birthday!... "
Yes--more vibrato, less vibrato, more baroque, more romantic; this is how he chooses to interpret and it`s beautifully expressive. He`s certainly a virtuoso
Thanks, Matt...I am using an old pair of steel strings on a stormy, very wet day [in this old church, the Nor'easter churning outside sent enormous amounts of humidity into the Sanctuary] making my bass "sweat", preventing me from getting a sound, unless I over-rosined the bow...My Air on a G String by Bach and my Ave Maria by Schubert came out more beautiful [in part, the rosin was wearing out and, in part, I released the use of the second finger on my bow arm]...
COMING FROM SOME ONE THAT PLAY 0 INSTRUMENT AND ONLY KNOW 0.0001 % in music this is very very goood. note: the piano was litle louwder or what ever u want to call it . thanks
Wonderful performance sir!! You are a true master! I really don't care what is said about the use of vibrato on music of this style, you give this Sonata life! Your vibrato is beautiful and very tasteful. Absolutely gorgeous tone. I wish I had been present at this performance. I would have stood up during the applause! I wish I could study with you.
I saw this comment way back when you wrote it, but I just never got back to this page until today...Are you a bassist?...I appreciate your talented reaction very much...I can play the bass half a dozen ways...one cannot experiment enough when one is tackling the most demanding string instrument...I have other solos with orchestra, but I do not know how to transfer these to a DVD, so I can put them online...
Thank-you for asking...funny...I no longer vibrate this way [though I can revert to it any time]...One key to a consistent vibrato [rhythmical] for me, lies in bending in the wrist [at least in these videos] -- especially in the lower positions - and using more arm for the upper positions...What instrument do you play?
wow, been a while since I posted that! Yea I'm a double bassist at RCM in london. It's really nice vibrato, very sad and like, desperate if you get my meaning. Are u mainly a soloist or do you do ensemble stuff as well?
Of course I'm an ensemble player as well...sorry I took so long to respond...I usually never read the comments and today I realized I could respond to each one...I'm on Facebook and have a TH-cam channel...I have some ensemble videos on the site "Bassist Xucla"...
Sir, Do you have any publications , or method books, or compositions? Again I love your technique, how can I say this correctly? it's straightforward no nonsense , brilliant!
Thank you, Anthony...apart from Gary Karr, my main inspirations have been the great cellists...Casals [with whom I recorded at Marlboro]; Feuermann; Starker...
I am learning this piece and you messed up quite a bit. However I can see you have superb mastery of the bass. You glided over those spots as if it were nothing and at a speed that I've never seen anyone play it. Well done. I strive to be at your level sir.
Fantastic rendition! I've listened to it several times now. love your sound. I have to ask (cause I checked the comments and no-one has asked) are those gut strings you're playing? Thanks!
Thank you ...You are the first to make the talented observation [which caused my frustrated facial expression at the end] that the pianist was not with me...In fact, I had fired her six months earlier for not practicing her parts, but circumstances forced me to re-hire her one week before this recital...She not only did not learn the music, but actively sabotaged this recital...Notice she also opened the top of the piano completely...she obviously could not hear me...She barrelled through the last movement at a greater speed than I intended...Lesson? Do not rehire someone you've fired [even though I substantially raised her fee as an apology] and never hire a chamber music pianist to accompany you...They are used to leading chamber ensembles, because they play most of the music...
Thank-you, but this was one of my worst recitals: the stormy weather outside, forced me to over-rosin the bow[bass was wet]; I lost my original pianist one week before, so this pianist was not prepared. Nevertheless, as Casals once said, "it's not the missed note that counts, but the missed thought"...plenty of thought here--at least, on the part of the soloist...
Though he is good, I must agree with cbpolo1, he plays this in a romantic style. This should be more baroque sounding, which I don't get that impression.
Señor. Usted sabe lo que es música? Por favor transmita me algo, todas pero todas las notas vivradisimas, ya sabemos que sabes vibrar por favor no te pases. Esto qué es, mira bien a otros artistas e intenta imitar un poco.
He started much too loud to really hear a dynamic contrast by the time he hits the B flat in the first phrase, he uses trills in places where in baroque music you would not hear, bowing is much too heavy at times, the highest point in the piece is the D in thumb position, and I can't really tell that from this. That's just the first movement though. It should be beautiful, not heavy.
I love the piece but your vibrato is too tight for my taste please try to widen it out for that’s the point of vibrato on the double bass. Wide vibrato sounds good yours is too tight
Good bassist but... he probably never listen some baroque music!... I teach double bass, and i don't understand why we don't make a difference between romantic music and the other!!! Violin, viola, celli... we are the only ones to do that. I am ashamed

Thank you for your kind and tasteful comments: please go to my TH-cam channel for more, or to my FB page titled Bassist Xucla.

i have heard this piece played hundreds of time never have i heard the fourth movement that fast! great job!!!!
beautiful and captivating!!
Thank-you! You have made a most talented observation...
Coming from someone learning this piece on double bass, I've been most influenced by this version. Great job! So inspiring!
Barry Green

I like your playing very much. There is a sort of emotional sensitivity about it, a deeply expressive approach to every note, that I enjoy greatly.

For the fastest rendition of mvt. 4 ever heard, watch 5:08 at 2x speed
Nice work, Bill!!!

Fantastic!
That face at the end! Its okay, it sounded good!

pianist accelerated a lil bit?
Any advice on how to achieve that vibrato? Obviously speed but anything else?

Wo gibt es “p” ⁉️
Was für Farbe braucht man dieses Stück ⁉️
This is helping me alot with the technical aspect of sonata. Magnificent thought the bowing was a tad hevy at times and even scratchy.
Fantastic rendition! I've listened to it several times now. love your sound. I have to ask (cause I checked the comments and no-one has asked) are those gut strings you're playing? Thanks!
Really nice! I think the pianist had to follow you as a solist more.
Lovely playing- I only wish the piano wasn't so overpowering!
III: 3:35

Yep, that pianist was lagging a lot in the 2nd and 4th movements. But you rocked.
Nice tone but doesn't sound very Baroque much less vibrato and trills could be a little cleaner

same impression
